Babies are delicate and so is their digestive tract. Whatever your baby puts in his mouth may enter his gastrointestinal tract, which is not strong enough to fight various kinds of pathogens or bacteria that enter his body. In the initial months of your baby’s life, his digestive tract will undergo many changes. For the first few months, it will not only produce various enzymes that help and aid digestion, but it will also develop antibodies to fight various infections and medical ailments. An Infant's Digestive System Transition from Womb to Birth
When a baby is inside his mother’s womb, he gets all his nutrients from the placenta. But soon after the birth of your baby, everything changes for him as he no longer depends on placenta for the nutrition. Now, his digestive system will have to fend of itself, which means it will have to digest food on its own. However, a baby’s digestive system is not mature or strong enough at birth, and it will take some time to adjust. And because of this very reason, he may even lose approximately 10 percent of the weight within a few days after the birth. Breast milk has all the nutrition and energy that a baby requires at birth. It is through breast milk only that a baby will get all the calories for his growth and development. It may take time for the breast milk to turn from colostrum to fat-dense milk, and ones the transition happens, you will notice your baby will start gaining weight.
As you know that babies have a smaller tummy, so you will have to feed your baby often. In the initial few days after birth, your baby may only be able to take an ounce of milk, but this may gradually increase up to three to four ounces a day before your baby is three months old. Apart from the smaller tummy, your baby may also have a small and underdeveloped oesophageal valve. This valve is responsible for the transfer of food to your baby’s tummy. The Digestive Tract Lining Issue
Adults and older children have a layer of mucus lining around their gastrointestinal tract. This mucus lining acts as a shield in protecting the digestive tract against any microbes or contaminants that they may consume with their food or liquids. However, babies do not have a strong mucus lining around their gastrointestinal tract. This may put babies at high risk of catching various kinds of infections. However, this should not be your cause of concern because as your baby will grow, this lining will become stronger and will mature completely and your baby’s body will become strong enough to start making its own antibodies. Before your baby’s body starts making its own antibodies, your baby will get them from the breast milk. Why Avoid Solid Foods Until 6 Months?
You may be tempted to give a morsel of food to your baby when you have your meals. However, if your baby is less than six months of age, this may not be a good idea. This is because no matter how eager or ready your baby may be, his digestive system may not be ready or prepared for the same. Your baby's body will not be efficient enough to produce the apt amount of enzymes to digest starch in the food until he reaches six months of age. Recently, I was invited for an educational yet fun-filled trip to the Bisleri plant with my daughter Vihaana. To my surprise, it turned out to be quite an informative trip. I learned how the most natural resource in the world, water, undergoes a series of purification methods, and yet, retains its mineral content.

A symbol of goodness, trust and purity, Bisleri has been a household name for decades. It is the most trusted brand of mineral water and it has fulfilled its promise of providing safe, pure, and healthy mineral water to consumers for the last 50 years.
Each drop of water at the plant goes through a rigorous 10-step quality process. Every Bisleri production facility has its own quality testing lab that ensures every Bisleri product is made as per the quality guidelines set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The Central Lab, located at the Bisleri Head Office, Mumbai, ensures that quality standards are maintained across all Bisleri units in the country. In 2018, Bisleri launched the world’s first vertical manufacturing plant for mineral water.
The visit to the Bisleri plant was an eye-opener. It gave us the knowledge of how mineral water is manufactured and purified. Before the approval of any manufacturing unit, all these tests are conducted on the water collected at the source. Ozonisation is then carried out to reduce the microbial load of the ‘raw’ water. Two tests are done on a weekly basis to monitor and control microorganisms in the sand filter outlet. Two tests are also done on a weekly basis in the carbon filter outlet for the same purpose. The iodine value is checked during the 4th test to confirm the efficiency of the activated carbon.
Two tests, the total coliform count and total plant count, are then conducted on a weekly basis to monitor and control microorganisms in RO filter outlet. This is followed by two tests conducted on a weekly basis to monitor the microorganisms in the water. Three visual inspection tests are performed on a daily basis to check the labelling and coding of the date, as well as the condition of the bottle and the cap. All these parameters should meet the standards before they’re dispatched from the plant.
Apart from these tests, seven other tests are conducted on the container every three months as per the BIS Standard. These tests ascertain the strength, capacity, and appearance of the bottle, and also test for any leaching from the PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic used for the bottle. Two tests are done on a weekly basis to monitor and control microorganisms in empty containers.
The final product undergoes a series of tests to confirm that the product meets all organoleptic parameters i.e., sensory and chemical elements such as the colour, taste, TDS (total dissolved solids) level, PH level, etc. The tests confirm that all the parameters meet legal requirements such as the amount of calcium and magnesium in the water, the alkalinity of the water, etc. The shelf-life mentioned on each bottle is accurate; the samples are tested periodically to ensure this. The final test measures the concentration of ozone in the final product. It has to be within the recommended level and is done on an hourly basis.
The knowledge I gained during this visit was immense. I was assured after this visit that the best packaged form of mineral water is Bisleri water indeed, and that I can give it to my daughter to drink without any inhibitions. My worry regarding the best way to quench her thirst when we’re not at home is at ease now. Moreover, I would now not hesitate to give her Bisleri water because of its mineral content too.

A Magical, Colourful Platter for Babies, With Oodles of Nutrition
I am a new mommy whose baby turned one just a week ago. I too am like all other mommies who suffer from baby tantrums. With growing age babies tend to develop taste and therefore it becomes crazy difficult to feed them low spice food which has high nutrition. However, we should also remember that babies do not like to eat the same food repeatedly. They too need a change and if we continue serving them the same food then we all know what do we have in store for us (simply baby leftovers).
I try my level best to give my child different food throughout the week and make sure that I do not repeat it within that week. So, coming to my MAGICAL COLOURFUL PLATTER, it contains nothing but different foods presented in variations so that my baby can eat up the maximum without being fussy.Let me share a few of them here -
The Vegetable Squad
Take different vegetables such as a floret of a cauliflower, few pieces of diced potato, a piece of pumpkin, half a tomato, half a carrot and a few peas. Boil all the vegetables and simultaneously cook some rice. Once the vegetables are boiled, separate them and put them in different small bowls. At the centre of the plate put some rice in any fashion to attract the child and decorate the bowls around it. Put some salt, black pepper and butter over the vegetables. Now, pair rice with one of the vegetables at a time and try feeding this healthy meal. This not only attracts the child but also the goodness of vegetables infused with rice helps fill their tummy properly.
The Fruity Affair
Similar to the vegetables I have tried giving different fruits to my baby at a time in small portions. However, this has been a game to him as he spoils his dress while trying to eat them on his own. When I give him a bowl of mix fruits, he tries to select the ones on the basis of colour. Though he is too small to identify them, he keeps on trying according to his wish. Therefore, I just supply him with a bowl of goodness and keep an eye on him to see that he eats it to the maximum without wasting much.
These food hacks have been my saviour for so long. I keep on changing the combinations and designs so as to keep him entertained, and luckily it works. Do give this a try and let me know the results.
