Importance of Protein Intake in Children - Are Milk Supplements Good?
Ask any parent what they wish for their children, and the most common answer you'll get is, “We want them to be healthy and fit." Parents are always working hard to provide the best of everything to their children. Generally, good parenting is aimed at imparting good education, providing good nutrition and taking care of the overall well-being of children. However, in growing years, the main attention is on the child’s growth and physical development.
Good nutrition and optimal growth are the foundation of good health. Nutrition not only affects growth but also immunity, intelligence, longevity, allergy, long-term health and recovery from sickness. In spite of parents' desire to provide good nutrition, many times it doesn’t happen and children are undernourished or overnourished. The reason for this is lack of knowledge about optimal nutrition. Now, let us understand what optimal nutrition is and how it can be given.
Food has different components like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, iron, vitamins and calcium which are required by our body. All these should be consumed in the right proportions for good health. Inclusion of carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and calcium in children’s daily diet is relatively easy. Proteins, iron and vitamin deficiency are commonly seen in children. Often, parents don't know the right source and amount of these nutrients needed at various ages. Let us discuss a few aspects of proteins.
What Are Proteins and Why Are They Important for Children?
Proteins are the building blocks of the body and are needed by the muscles and all body organs. Most of the hormones and enzymes in the body are proteins. They help to build and repair lean body tissue. Growing children need proteins to assist in the development of new lean muscle tissue. If children are active and in sports, body tissue gets broken during the activities. It is proteins that act as a healing agent and repair lean body tissue. Proteins also play an important role in the working and development of the immune system.
What Are the Different Categories of Proteins?
Based on the content and digestibility, proteins are categorised into classes on a score called Protein Digestibility –Corrected Amino acid Score (PDCAAS). This score was adopted by the US FDA (1993) to evaluate protein quality. A score of 1 (maximum score) indicates that the food provides 100 % of the essential amino acids per unit of the product. Cow milk protein, casein, whey and eggs have a score of 1 (indicating higher quality) whereas vegetable sources have a score varying from 0.7-0.8. It implies, therefore, that vegetarians would benefit by consuming milk protein for getting 100 % essential amino acid intake.
What Are the Sources of Proteins?
Even though proteins are present in various foods, it is pulses, sprouts, soy, milk, eggs and meat which are considered good sources of protein.
What is the Daily Protein Requirement for Children?
A growing child’s protein requirement is 1 gram per kg. So, a child weighing 12 kg would need 12 gms of proteins a day. An adult would need approximately 50-60 gms proteins in a day. Demands increase with pregnancy, breastfeeding, strenuous physical activity, sickness, etc.
Approximately, 15-20% of the food we eat should be protein.
Should We Use Milk Supplements? Which Is the Right One?
Plain milk is one of the easiest ways to provide good proteins to children and the addition of an appropriate nutritional supplement may fortify nutrition. It is recommended to give 400 ml (2 glasses) of milk on a daily basis. Unfortunately, many children dislike milk and a daily battle ensues between mothers and children. Addition of a milk supplement may enhance the acceptance and taste, apart from the nutritional benefit it provides. Parents thus flavour milk by adding milk supplements which are available in the market.
Both parents and children believe the advertisements which claim that regular consumption will make kids taller, stronger, energetic, intelligent and that the nutrition of children is incomplete without these products. Such claims may not be always true. Parents buy milk supplements without reading the ingredients label in detail. It is highly recommended to read the labels before buying any product and become aware of the type and quantity of nutrients provided per serving. Choose a supplement that provides you with important nutrients like proteins, phosphorus, different vitamins, potassium, iron, DHA, etc. in adequate quantities. We are always searching and analysing good milk additives in the market for the content, taste and price. One product that recently caught our attention is V-Nourish.
V-Nourish seems to be a promising and different product which provides all these important nutrients and other ingredients like prebiotics, probiotics, aloe vera and ashwagandha herb. This particular herb is very beneficial as it helps in sharpening memory, improves sleep, fights infection and acts as an immunity booster. The protein used in the product is 100% milk protein concentrate which is well absorbed and nutritionally good (PDCAAS 1.0). V-Nourish provides the right nutrients which are helpful for brain development, growth, immunity, stamina and good digestion as well. The ingredients and their benefits are mentioned clearly on the back label making things clearer for the consumer. V-Nourish is available in different flavours like Strawberry, Cocoa, Kesar Pista and Badaam. As the daily recommended requirement for milk is 400 ml (2 glasses) a day, using 20 gm of this product per serving is recommended for nutrition supplementation.
It is essential to plan your child's daily meals on the principles of a balanced diet as it fulfils all the nutritional needs of the body. Nutrition in childhood has an impact on long-term health. Ensure that your child gets all nutrients from an early age and does not develop any deficiencies. Due to the demands of growth and development, getting adequate protein is particularly important during infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Meet all their nutritional needs by providing natural foods and giving their life a healthy start.

Natural Ingredients You Didn't Know Were Great for Your Baby's Skin
Markets today are saturated with chemical-heavy skin and hair products, and it makes sense that new moms are worried about whether baby products are laden with them too. We know that baby skin is super soft and sensitive – it is also easily penetrable, which makes it more susceptible to absorbing harmful chemicals, causing skin irritation and other problems. It’s no easy job taking care of a baby, especially in the first year – we’re here to make it slightly easier for you.
Natural Ingredients That Are Great for Your Baby’s Skin
Every mother wants the best for her baby, but it's really easy to give in and buy nicely packaged products without knowing what’s in them. We tend to trust brands that sell us baby products, but we often don’t know what they contain, which means we have no idea what we are putting on our infants' sensitive skin! Knowing what works and what doesn't work on a baby's skin is important information, so the next time you're looking for safe and mild skincare products for your baby, keep this list handy - we're about to tell you about the natural ingredients that are incredible for your little one's skin! If a baby product contains any of these in its list of ingredients, breathe easy. It's great for your baby!
Here’s a list of natural ingredients that are good for your baby’s skin:
1. Coconut Oil
There’s a reason why this oil has been passed down to us by our elders! Coconut oil is mild on the baby’s skin. It also does not permeate the baby’s skin easily and keeps the baby's skin hydrated. A baby skincare product that contains coconut oil is sure to be great for your little one.
2. Chamomile
Chamomile tea is known worldwide to be a calming beverage, but did you know that the flower is actually incredible for your baby as well? Chamomile is a natural relaxant that can calm your baby’s senses easily. It is also naturally anti-inflammatory, which makes it soothing on the skin and hair. What’s a better way to calm your baby than a fun, relaxing bath? Lotus Herbals Baby+ Little Bubbles Body Wash and Shampoo with chamomile extracts is pure and tender on your baby’s skin and hair, and it cleanses gently. This product is also safe for daily use – give your little one a relaxing bath before you put her to bed and watch her sleep soundly!
3. Almond Oil
Almond oil is a great natural ingredient for your baby’s skin – it keeps the skin moisturised for long and helps get rid of itchiness and dryness. Almond oil also aids in moisture absorption and helps minimise water loss from the skin. Massaging your baby with a baby product containing almond oil will help increase blood circulation, which is highly beneficial.
4. Shea Butter
Shea butter comes from the fruit of the karite tree. Native to Africa, shea butter has uses similar to coconut oil on the skin. Shea butter is great for your baby’s skin because it has essential fats and vitamins that keep the skin hydrated, thus reducing itchiness and dryness. Shea butter supports the production of collagen because of the linoleic, oleic and stearic acids it contains. Shea butter is often used as an ingredient in organic bath soaps – there’s one for babies as well! Lotus Herbals Baby + Little Bubbles Gentle Bathing Soap is a mix of shea butter, aloe vera and olive oil, which nourish the baby's skin. This soap is also mild enough for daily use, so don't worry about your baby's skin drying out further.
5. Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is a great natural ingredient for babies with sensitive skin. It is mild, contains anti-bacterial properties, and can especially be used for babies with eczema, psoriasis, and cradle cap. Jojoba oil is also known to be great for the hair as it provides the right amount of hydration without being too heavy on the skin.
6. Aloe Vera
We are all aware of aloe vera’s miraculous benefits on our skin and hair, but it’s equally great for babies! Aloe’s natural enzymes help control inflammation, which makes it a useful ingredient in any eczema-related baby product. Aside from this, insect bites can be treated using aloe-based baby products.
7. Natural Corn Starch
Natural corn starch is incredibly helpful when it comes to absorbing moisture. It has vitamins and minerals that coat the skin and help it from turning moist and developing rashes, acne, and cradle cap. Corn starch is a better option compared to talcum powder, which is prohibited for a baby’s skin as the powder dust can cause trouble with breathing. Most baby powders contain natural corn starch, and one of the best powders for babies is Lotus Herbals Baby + Love Sprinkle No-talc Powder. It is gentle and paraben-free, and can be used to treat your little one’s diaper rash as well among other things.
8. Olive Oil
Olive oil is extremely beneficial for your baby’s skin as it promotes growth and relaxes the baby. Used often for massages, olive oil hydrates the skin and has a regenerative effect on the skin tissues. Baby skincare products containing olive oil are great as they can be light on your baby’s skin.
With these ingredients in your baby’s skincare products, there’s no need to worry! However, remember to consult your paediatrician before you buy any baby product. Also remain vigilant to any allergies your little one might develop, and be very careful so your child does not accidentally ingest any product. Understanding your baby’s skincare needs is the first step to having a happy, smiling baby – you can never go wrong with natural ingredients!

Eating Prawns During Pregnancy- Is It Safe?
Craving some delicious prawn dishes? Butter garlic prawns, prawn curry, stir-fried prawns dipped in sauce, prawn biryani, pepper prawns. The list goes on. Prawns belong to the crustacean group of sea creatures and are delicious. However, with many people suffering from allergic reactions to prawns, one wonders if eating prawns is safe during pregnancy.
Is it Safe to Eat Prawns When Pregnant?
While some seafood needs to be avoided during pregnancy, prawns are generally safe when procured from a non-polluted source and cooked thoroughly. However, during pregnancy, moderation is the key for every food you add to your list. Consuming prawns in excess or not adhering to certain precautions while consuming prawns can lead to adverse effects during pregnancy. In case of doubt, always consult your doctor before the consumption of any food item.
Health Benefits of Eating Prawns
Apart from being delicious, prawns are packed with minerals and vitamins essential for mommies-to-be.
Packed With Proteins
Prawns are an excellent source of proteins during pregnancy. Protein-rich foods help in stabilising blood sugar levels and keep gestational diabetes in check. Being low in calories and fat content, prawns will help you gain healthy muscle mass.
Rich in Vitamins
Prawns are a rich source of Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, iron, zinc, choline, iodine, copper, and phosphorus. Essential to improving immunity, thyroid function, and brain development, they are also helpful in the development of bones and teeth.
Rich in Other Nutrients
Prawns contain nutrients that are readily absorbed by our body and essential for our body to protect and heal itself. Selenium is an antioxidant that helps fight cell damage and protects against certain cancers. Amino acids help regenerate new cells and repair damaged cells. Astaxanthin has anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing properties. Prawns are rich in all these nutrients.
Low in Calories
During pregnancy, it is essential to gain healthy weight and get adequate nutrition. Prawns are low in calories and, thus, a healthier choice to add nutrition without consuming unnecessary fat.
Rich in Omega 3
This fatty acid is found abundantly in prawns. Studies have shown that it helps in developing the eyes and nerve connections in the foetus.
Should Prawns Be Avoided in Pregnancy?
As we just discussed, consuming prawns during pregnancy has several health benefits. However, it is still recommended that you check for the risks associated with consumption of prawns or any seafood with your doctor. If you are still unsure, start with small amounts and see how your body reacts to it. Your diet can then be changed accordingly. In any case, practice moderation and do not go overboard with any food. If your body accepts it, prawns can be very nutritious and healthy for both you and your baby.
Some pregnant women may face the risk of prawn allergy during pregnancy. Here are some risks associated with prawns during pregnancy and information on whether you need to be on your guard:
Cholesterol: Prawns are a rich source of cholesterol. If you have high cholesterol, prawns may not be good for you or for the health of your unborn baby.
Allergy: If you have shown allergic reactions to a similar group of food, it is advisable to keep away from prawns. They can cause reactions that include abdominal pains, itchiness, rashes, and inflammation.
Mercury poisoning: Water pollutants and increased levels of toxic chemicals can create health problems if you consume prawns sourced from polluted waters. Prawns can absorb the pollutants into their body. Seawater prawns may contain a high level of mercury that can adversely affect the development of the baby’s nervous system. Contaminated river or lake waters contain high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls and pose a health risk to you and your baby.
Infection: It is always recommended that you consume cooked prawns when pregnant. Raw or undercooked prawns are extremely harmful and associated with multiple health risks like blood poisoning, food poisoning, or other harmful infection to your baby.
Tips While Eating Prawns When Pregnant
Always buy prawns from reliable and trusted sources. Ensure that they are thick and glossy; do not buy discoloured prawns or ones with shrunken eyes.
Avoid raw seafood preparations like sushi during pregnancy. Dried prawns during pregnancy are fine if they are thoroughly cleaned and cooked.
If you don’t have an option of fresh prawn, opt for good quality frozen ones and defrost them before cooking.
Ensure that they are cleaned properly before cooking. You may cook them with or without the shell. Cooking with veins or deveining them is a personal preference.
Clean and cook them thoroughly. Signs of well-cooked prawns include a red shell and pearly white or opaque flesh. You can soak them in a bowl of lukewarm salted water for about 10 minutes and wash them well.
Avoid restaurant served seafood.
Steam or sauté them till they are completely cooked. Make sure that the meat is firm and bouncy.
As long as prawns are eaten in moderation during pregnancy and sourced from reliable sources, there are unlikely to be any complications. If you experience any signs of discomfort or an allergy, immediately consult your doctor.

Why Gratitude Is a Must at the Workplace
Gratitude in the workplace is very important. An encouraging word can help boost morale to get the job done faster. A fat pay cheque at the end of the month should not be the only incentive to come to work every day. Building relationships at work is also important.
The next time your team does a good job on an assignment, show them gratitude. It goes a long way in establishing a great connect at work. In fact, gratitude does more than you give it credit for!
Why it's Important to Show Gratitude In Office
1. Feel good factor
When you use the idea of showing gratitude at your office, you help increase optimism, alertness and enthusiasm. Your team will look forward to punching in their cards daily. Work will get done faster and with more efficiency. Team members will become team players. Who wants a dull and depressing workplace, anyway? One kind word can make a change.
2. Positive force
A little gratitude goes a long way. Not just at work but in your personal life, too. At work, it helps the team stick together to face uncertain challenges and pressure situations. Hurling abuses and initiating a screaming match messes with team morale. When you create a positive environment at work with words of appreciation, it latches on to every member of the team. Even if your team members have to pull an all-night for a project, they would be willing to. Learning how to say a thank you at work will ensure that your team puts their best foot forward every time.
3. Improves focus
Without gratitude, team members often become unfocused in what they do. If you are a tyrant, it will lead to hurt feelings and resentment. Do you know how you can bring about an attitudinal change? Show a little appreciation. When you do that, a noticeable synergy shift will take place. Also, team members will not consider quitting their jobs. Decision-making will improve significantly. Saying thank you at work is a positive reinforcement that can go a long way in ensuring success at work.
4. Propels growth
Were you always under the impression that being grateful entails being a weak leader? No! When you share words of appreciation with your team, it propels them to work harder. Absenteeism drops and deadlines are met. Even when mistakes are made, ensure that you encourage your team. Incorporate the same attitude at home too. Thank your husband for taking care of the kids when you're not around. Gratitude makes everything worthwhile!
5. Boosts health
Gratitude in the workplace can benefit your health. Really! It will help boost the immune system while also suppressing stress. You can say goodbye to panic attacks and headaches. Since a kind word can influence your team to work hard, it reduces stress on you. Why not try it every day for a more fulfilling life?
Who doesn’t like being appreciated for a job well done? When you set a precedent, other people will follow suit. A ‘thank you’ will not affect your position in any way. Rather, you will be respected more. Go ahead! Read more
