7 Effective Tips to Calm Down a Hyper Toddler
Do you often feel helpless when your tot throws a tantrum and refuses to settle down no matter how strict you are? Toddlers can have the best disciplinarians at their wit's end, which is why we could all do with natural ways to calm a hyper child.
Sometimes, it is that extra bar of chocolate he is being denied. At other times it is an extra hour up at bedtime which you adamantly refuse to allow him. Whatever the trigger for your child's hyperactive behaviour, it is all you can do to stop yourself from going berserk. They call toddler-hood the terrible twos for a reason!
We bring you a set of useful calming tips for hyperactive children. All kids are bound to be hyperactive at one point or the other in their lives, thus making this behavioural toolkit an essential one for every parent to have in their kitty!
Natural Ways To Calm A Hyper Child
1. Practise Systematic Ignoring
Harsh though it sounds, ignoring the tantrum is often the best way to deal with it. Your child must realize that throwing a tantrum is not the solution for every situation in life. Let the hyperactive behaviour, often accompanied by howling, take its time to die. While the ignoring is on, make sure you provide the kids food items such as fresh vegetables and fruits, especially chicken, walnuts and whole-grains like pasta and brown bread. These calming foods for toddlers will have them settle down and be their usual grinning selves much faster than a bout of shouting is ever likely to achieve!
2. Use The Power Of Hugging
This always works. When your child seems most menacing, hug him tight. There is healing in Mom's hug and it is sure to assure your tot of how you are always there for him. Hugging doesn't mean giving in to unreasonable demands (something you should never do) but simply ascertains an understanding. This is often enough to bring your tot down from the peaks of hyperactivity.
3. Bring Bubbles To The Rescue
Pop, pop! When those dainty soap bubbles burst, our hearts feel instantly lighter. Your toddler enjoys this activity as well and is sure to feel calmer when surrounded by lovely, airy bubbles. You can also consider buying musical bubble guns which can be set to different tunes. They are a major stress and tantrum buster!
4. Run A Hot Water Bath
Much like adults, steaming hot water baths are helpful even for kids. They soothe their frayed nerves and bring a sense of calm. Ensure the water is not too hot. You can also infuse the water with relaxing bath salts, lavender oil, chamomile and rosemary. These are considered to be calming herbs for kids and have a positive effect on your child's nervous system.
5. Play Calming Music
Music can be a great way to restore peace at home. The next time your children get unruly, try music as therapy. Tracks such as animal sounds, waterfalls and ocean sounds are considered to be calming music for toddlers. Playing them at a moderate volume in the background can have a peaceful effect on your tantrum-throwing child.
6. Engage Them In A Physical Activity
When hyperactivity peaks, children need an outlet for all the extra energy that is driving them crazy. Get your children to engage in a high energy activity such as running around the garden, skipping, playing with a ping-pong ball or swinging. This alternate channelisation of energy will help them eventually return to their pre-tantrum state.
7. Converse In A Calming Voice
Finally, Mamma's calm voice is all that a toddler really needs when he is at his vulnerable best. Get your child to sit down and talk to him in a quiet, soft tone. You could also whisper in his ears and tell him that his behaving in an unruly manner really hurts you. Children are more emotionally sound than you know and the message is likely to hit home.

Taking Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) during Pregnancy
Vitamin B5, also termed as pantothenic acid, plays a vital role in helping a person lead a healthy life. It helps the body convert the food consumed into energy. It has been named ‘pantothenic’ because it is naturally found in many food sources meaning it is absorbed ‘from everywhere.’ A multitude of benefits of vitamin B5 can be enumerated. It is found as coenzyme A which helps in chemical reactions. It turns carbohydrate into glucose that produces energy. It keeps the nervous system healthy and the eyes, skin, hair, and liver too. The sources of vitamin B5 are mushrooms, eggs, milk, cabbage, peanuts, and soybean etc.
What is Pantothenic Acid?
A water-soluble vitamin, pantothenic acid or vitamin B5, is an essential nutrient present in many varieties of foods. The term has been derived from the Greek word ‘panto’ meaning ‘everywhere’. It is used as a dietary supplement and consumed in recommended daily allowances. It helps food to convert into energy and is necessary for making blood cells. It helps in the proper functioning of the nervous system.
Recommended Daily Intake for Pregnant Women
As it is common for most nutrients, the recommended intake varies according to the age. The adequate intake for adult and women including pregnant women has been set at 5mg per day. Adequate intake for lactating women has been set at 7mg per day.
Importance of Vitamin B5 in Pregnancy
A series of B vitamins, known as vitamin B complex like vitamin B6, B9, B12 are important aspects of nutrition during pregnancy. They help in rebuilding organs, tissues, and muscles. Quality prenatal vitamins assure you the following benefits:
Help in releasing stress-relieving hormones.
aid in preventing muscle cramps, common during pregnancy
Help in metabolizing proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.
Enhances the healing procedure for skin wounds.
Pantothenic Acid Deficiency
As pantothenic acid is found in almost all foods, it is extremely rare to hear about its deficiency. It can, however, happen in combination with other B vitamins deficiency. Some symptoms of the deficiency include depression, fatigue, stomach pain, insomnia, burning feet, vomiting etc. deficiency of the supplement is known to cause increased sensitivity to insulin.
If vitamin B5 is taken in very high doses, it can cause diarrhoea and can also potentially increase the risk of bleeding.
Food Sources of Vitamin B5
Vitamin B5 relieves the leg cramps and produces important hormones. It is invariably found in plant and animal products. It is found in meat, fish, grains, dairy products, legumes, and vegetables. Keep in mind that the quality content of the product is lost during milling, canning, freezing or boiling. Its naturally high food sources are given below:
Whole grains
Egg yolk
Brown rice
Cashew nuts
Broccoli / cauliflower
Sweet potato
Mushrooms
Chicken breast
Milk
Oranges
Bananas
FAQs
Many people have queries regarding the intake of the supplement. The most frequently asked questions are:
What is vitamin B5 good for? What happens when too much vitamin B5 is consumed? What is the function of vitamin B5? What are the side effects of vitamin B5? What precautions are required while consuming vitamin B5?
1. Can you take vitamin B5 supplements while pregnant?
Pantothenic acid is essential for producing cholesterol and hormones and metabolism of fats, protein, and carbohydrates. About 6mg of the vitamin can be consumed daily. It plays a major role in the process of the baby’s growth and development. It regulates the body’s adrenal activity, produces antibodies and improves wound healing. Hence pantothenic acid and pregnancy can go hand in hand.
2. What happens while taking excessive vitamin B5 when pregnant?
There are possible dangers of taking excess amount of pantothenic acid than the recommended adequate intake. Anything more than 10mg is termed as high dose and may lead to diarrhoea. It is speculated that high doses can cause heartburn or nausea or dehydration. Consistent overdosing of the vitamin may lead to oedema characterized by swelling with sensitivity and itchiness.
Vitamin B5helps the body convert food into energy and makes blood cells. If you regularly eat a healthy and balanced diet incorporating a wide variety of foods you will neither suffer from deficiency nor require supplements.

Talking About Tough Issues with Kids
As children grow, they are confronted with a lot of things around them like how a baby is born, death, child abuse, separation, sexuality, religion, wars, etc. Sometimes, these issues may be difficult to explain, but try not to avoid these questions as we may miss an important opportunity to explain the right and wrong of these subjects to our children.
Children start asking ‘why’ and ‘how’ about each topic as soon as they reach the age of 4. This is because, one - they are curious, and second - they have started thinking more logically. They want to know why certain things happen and how they happen. It’s good to encourage such type of open talks in the family. In fact, these early conversations are more likely to continue in the later lives too. This gives a unique opportunity to parents to talk about such issues first before anyone else does.
Tips to Talk about Tough Issues
Following are some of the useful tips which will help you in talking about such tough issues with patience and confidence:
Find Out What a Child Knows Already
Ask your children how a particular query occurred in their mind, where did they hear about it and what do they know. This will help you understand what your child understands or misunderstands. It can guide you in putting the context right.
Keep Your Discussion and Explanations Simple
Keep your language and explanation simple and age-appropriate. There is no need to give all the details about something, from start to end. Just tell them what is required for the moment and in case such situation occurs, what safety measures should be followed.
Encourage Openness
Children will come up with their questions only when they know we will hear them and respond. If the very first time, we scold or ignore them on such questions, they are unlikely to come up again with such queries. Thus, it’s important to create an open, supportive and positive environment at home.
Share Your Values
Research says, children need moral guidance from their mom and dad, so do not hesitate to share your views, beliefs and values with your little ones.
Be Honest and Straight
Give honest answers, it will give your child an ability to trust you in the future. If you do not provide straightforward answers, children will create their own fantasy explanations which can be more weird and frightening than the real ones. There is no need to provide all details, but it’s important not to leave big gaps.
Parents are responsible for raising their kids in a manner that they grow up to be confident and balanced human beings. Talking about tough subjects helps kids understand how they have to protect themselves and take smart decisions in critical situations. Read more
