Should You Use Mineral Oil for Babies?
The skin of babies is super sensitive and delicate. This is due to the initial developing stage that your little one goes through. The oversensitive skin, thus calls for extra care and precautions that one must take as a parent. This includes using the right kind of products on the skin.
Mineral oil, for instance, has been widely used for babies. But the question is whether it is safe or not. Before you apply anything on your baby’s skin, knowing the pros and cons can come in handy.
What is Mineral Oil?
Mineral oil or aptly the white mineral oil is a by-product that is derived from refining crude oil that is further used for making petroleum-based products and gasoline. Mineral oil is a transparent liquid that appears to be colourless and is an ingredient in a lot of baby cosmetic products, including the baby oil. When you browse through the ingredients of your baby’s oil, you’ll find “paraffinum liquidum” listed on it. This is what signifies the concentration of mineral oil in the oil.
Is Mineral Oil Safe for Babies?
No, mineral oil isn’t safe for babies. Whether you are using mineral oil for babies’ hair or for their body, it is considered to be unsafe. Mineral oil may lead to toughening of skin that may further lead to dryness. This mineral oil tends to clog your baby’s skin pores that, in turn, suffocate the skin.
The reason behind it is simple. The skin requires space for breathing. It does that with the help of minute pores on the skin. But, when the skin’s surface is covered with a layer of mineral oil, the skin dirt tends to settle down. Such a situation is not at all ideal in case of babies as the dirt may transform into the toxins that may harm the baby later.
When wondering “is mineral oil safe for babies with constipation”, it has a dicey perspective. On the one hand, mineral oil is considered to be a great remedy for constipation. It is believed; when mineral oil is massaged over the intestinal surface which, in turn, averts water absorption.
On the other side, mineral oil is not safe for infants and is not even recommended by doctors for babies under the age of six. Even if you are using mineral oil based products on kids, it is highly advised to minimize it or stop it altogether.
What are the Side-Effects of Using Mineral Oil on Infants?
Mineral oil has a number of side effects when baby health is the matter of concern. Some of which, include:
1. Skin Pore Clogging
Skin requires breathing for its normal functioning. When mineral oil is applied to a baby’s body, the skin develops a layer that obstructs the dirt and other impurities from escaping.
2. Digestion Issues
Babies have a tendency to put anything and everything in the mouth. Be it hands or the feet; babies can be seen putting them in the mouth. And, when you have recently massaged their hands and feet, the mineral oil is likely to get into the system, which, in turn, leads to indigestion.
3. Negative Impact on Cell Development
For your surprise, the mineral oil does not moisturize your baby’s skin. On the other side, mineral oil also resists the moisture absorption from around the air, thus, negative impact on the normal cell development.
4. Candidiasis Vulnerability
In case you apply mineral oil to your baby’s skin; that are lower in weight there are possibilities that they may develop candidiasis or yeast infection.
5. Nutritional Deficiencies
When mineral oil for baby massage is used, the skin usually absorbs it. Once the oil gets absorbed, it makes its way to the intestinal system. In turn, the vitamins get saturated, thus the nutritional deficiencies.
Looking into how mineral oil can harm your baby, try to shift over to safer alternatives such as the flax-seed oil. And, in case you observe any of the mentioned side effects in your baby, do not hesitate to contact a dermatologist.

Clothes Dressing and Undressing in Toddler Development
For a 21-month-old toddler, dressing up on her own is complicated. In order to help your child, begin by keeping it simple. Avoid clothes with buttons, buckles and complicated tie-ups. Let her take her time as you explain the process step-by-step. Encourage her and she'll soon achieve this important milestone.
Dressing and undressing requires a lot of skill for a toddler. She needs to master gross motor skills like lifting the arms and legs in a coordinated motion into sleeves and pant legs, and balancing to take off clothes. She’ll need to develop fine motor skills to use her fingers to manipulate zippers, buckles and buttons. A child also needs to be old enough to have mastered some cognitive skills such as being able to understand the sequence of putting on clothing. It’s all quite a task!
How to Further Dressing and Undressing Toddler Development
1. Get Easy-to-wear Clothes
Buy a slightly larger size of sweaters and jackets so your child can easily slip into and shrug out of them without having to undo too many buttons or zippers. You can let her practice with your socks, and then move her to an appropriate size. The larger the clothes, the easier it is for a toddler to get dressed and undressed.
2. Play Dress-up with Toys
Encourage your child to dress up a favourite doll or teddy. It’s easier for her to understand the steps involved in dressing by doing it on another body. Dressing a toy also makes her feel responsible, and she can practice again and again without getting frustrated.
3. Buy No-lace Shoes
When encouraging a 21-month-old toddler to dress independently, start easy with slip-ons and Velcro shoes. Show your toddler how you slip on your shoes and encourage her to do the same by scrunching up her toes and easing her feet into the shoes. Toddlers love the sound of Velcro, and they find shoes that have it much easier to wear. ||
4. Use Elastic Waistbands
Get your child pants with elastic waistbands. Leave bottoms with buttons, drawstrings and zippers for later. She’ll have a much easier time pulling them on and off. Once she’s mastered this, you can slowly introduce pants with press buttons.
5. Be Patient
Your child undressing and dressing will take time. She has small hands and it takes longer to get things done. Be patient and encouraging, and don’t tell her to hurry up. Always remember that she’s learning a new skill, which comes naturally to you.
6. Give Her Choices
Let your toddler pick out her own clothes. Give her a few choices, to keep things simple. Make a game out of it by asking her to match colours. It’s a simple step to teaching a child how to dress themselves. If your toddler has a sibling, you can make a race out of it too.
For a child, dressing themselves builds confidence, independence and a sense of achievement. Learning how to do so needs patience, practice, and persistence from you and your toddler. By the age of 5 years, most children are ready to cross the toddler self-dressing milestone, with just a few hiccups on the way. Has your child learned to dress by herself yet? How do you help her? 5 Reasons Why Weight Loss Is Harder For Women
Are you diligently eating a balanced diet? Going on a walk every now and then? Doing housework? Great! But despite all that, is your weight, especially in the post-pregnancy period, still high? Well, don't feel down in the dumps. Science now confirms that there are some reasons which actually make weight loss HARDER for women - which means the fault isn't with you!
Weight issues can surface as the biggest challenge for women, particularly so after they become a mother. Most of us try to get back in shape after some months have passed since our delivery. Those of us who are fitness enthusiasts even sweat it out for hours and hours while the rest of us go on a diet, get walking, and control our portions. But the numbers on the weighing scale and the love handles on your tummy just don’t seem to budge!
To make things worse, you notice your husband is shedding pounds without putting in as much effort. Just what is going on here? Why do women have it so difficult when it comes to weight loss and what can we do about it?
Well, research has proven that shedding the pounds is definitely harder for the fairer sex. So it's not your fault if you are unable to lose weight, really, but the problem could be biological in nature. Check out the five reasons that could be at play in spoiling your weight loss plans - and also find out how to STOP them!
1. You have a slower metabolism rate
Genetic make-up is largely responsible for the difficulties that women face with weight loss. By nature, the metabolic rate of a man is faster than that of a woman. Additionally, a large proportion of a man’s body is made of muscle, while a woman’s has more fat. Both these factors account for men being able to burn more calories faster (even in the resting state) as compared to women. Bah!
2. Your hormones are messing things up
As incredible as it may seem, hormones are also a reason why it’s tough for women to lose weight as fast as men. Bloating and water retention are a part and parcel of your monthly period, which can make you look and feel fatter. PMS also integrates symptoms like depression and a sudden increase in appetite, which may have an adverse impact on your plans to lose weight. As far as pregnancy and delivery are concerned, the hormones are in a mad rush!
3. You are getting the wrong kind of exercise
This one can be particularly depressing - you have been exercising hard but weight loss is still not happening and your post-pregnancy sagging skin continues to sag! Well, it is possible that you are exercising wrong - and this is actually worse than not getting any exercise. Traditionally, cardio exercises are recommended for women while men go for strength training. The former is effective for burning calories while the latter increases metabolism by building up muscle mass. As a result, men tend to derive greater benefit from exercise. In your quest to tone up, you need to combine different workouts or you'll just be wasting time.
4. Your emotions are making you fatter
Yes, it is very much possible! Women have to deal with more stress and anxiety in their daily lives than others in the family. This increases the incidence of emotional eating in women and gives them a tendency to fall prey to sudden spikes in appetite (especially chocolate, fries and chilled soda...) As a result, you can find it tough to bring down weighing scale numbers. This is particularly too when you become a mom and have new stressors in your life, as well as increased hunger owing to breastfeeding.
5. Your environment is not health-friendly
Finally, another strange but definite cause of why it’s harder for women to lose weight is the environment. Stay-at-home mommies may eat their kids’ leftovers to avoid wastage. Tasting while cooking is another culprit as is snacking when there’s no time to enjoy a proper meal. Coupled with everything else, it’s easy to see why women consume more calories and tend to fail more in weight loss efforts.
When you don't lose weight despite rigorous efforts, you may fall into a negative pattern. But depression can worsen the situation. So, if your weighing scale is not budging and your plans are not giving you the desired results, it doesn’t always mean you’re doing anything wrong. Just be positive, focus on fitness and give yourself time to lose weight. It will happen with time. Read more
