Decoding Baby's Body Language - What's Your Child Trying to Say
From the very first cry, your baby starts to communicate with you. For the first few days, she will only cry to let people know that she is hungry, sleepy, uncomfortable, anxious etc. As she grows, she starts communicating through body language. But, as a parent how do you understand what your baby is trying to tell?
Understanding Your Baby’s Different Body Language Cues
As a new parent, understanding a newborn’s body language is difficult. However, it is important for every parent to be able to read the baby's body language. When your baby is a few months old, understanding infant body language isn’t that difficult. Listed below is a quick guide to body language cues of a baby.
1. Kicking Legs In the Air
This is one of the first sign that your baby is trying to communicate with you.
What Does It Mean
If you see your baby doing so, then it means that she is very excited and happy. The excitement could be on seeing you or something that fascinates her like water, her favourite toy or even her food bowl (if she is hungry).
How to Respond
Kicking in the air will help your baby to develop the muscles that will help her in crawling. Therefore, encourage her to kick her legs in the air by getting the things that excite her.
2. Turning her Face Away
You may be feeding her or trying to talk to her, but she just wouldn’t look at you. Do you suppose your baby is ignoring you or is angry with you?
What Does It Mean
This could mean two things. First, she may just try to process as to what is happening or what is going on in her surrounding or she could be angry with you for intruding into her personal space.
How to Respond
Just let her be, for a while. Allow her to explore. Probably she has seen a lizard on the wall and is curious to know what it is or is simply amazed to see a reflection of herself in the mirror. Once she has satiated her curiosity, she will get back to you.
3. Arching Her Back
Some babies may arch their backs while being fed or while being held. There can be many reasons for a baby to do so.
What Does It Mean
If a baby does so in the middle of a feed, it may mean that she does not want to be fed any longer. It could also mean that the baby has colic or suffers from digestive disorders like GERD or acid reflux. Another very common reason for arching their backs by older infants is when they are frustrated, angry or tired.
At times, babies suffering from Autism, Rumination disorder or Kernicterus are also seen arching their backs.
How to Respond
Just try to calm her down. You can divert her attention by taking her outside and showing her things which she would be interested in. You can even pat her back slowly or rock her so that in case she is sleepy. If the crying persists, consult a Paediatrician immediately.
4. Stretching Out Arms
Babies with outstretched arms with open hands and fingers are a good sign.
What Does It Mean
It means that your little munchkin is happy and in a good mood. However, it can also be that the baby has newly acquired the skill of sitting and is trying to balance herself while trying to sit up straight.
How to Respond
Both of you should enjoy the moment. Take her to a park or for a walk. You can also go about your rare shopping sprees on these days when she is in a good mood. She will enjoy absorbing the new things that she comes across, and you will get some time for retail therapy.
In case, the outstretched arms are to balance herself while trying to sit, give her a hand. Otherwise, you can surround her with a lot of soft pillows and cushions so that even if she loses balance, she may not hurt herself.
5. Fist Clenching
The baby may be seen doing this with or without crying.
What Does It Mean
Clenching of the fist is a sign that the baby is extremely stressed out due to hunger.
How to Respond
In case you see your baby doing so (even if he is not crying), your obvious response should be to feed your baby immediately.
6. Baby Folding Her Knees
Babies sometimes can be seen folding both their knees and bringing it towards their stomach.
What Does It Mean
The sign of a baby folding her knees towards her stomach means that she has some kind of digestive problems like constipation, gas or stomach uneasiness.
How to Respond
Try to ease her up by helping her to burp by slowly and gently patting her back. In case you are nursing her, avoid oily and spicy food which may cause her gas, acid reflux, constipation or gas. If the sign persists, consult a Paediatrician.
7. Grabbing Ears
It is usually done by babies when they are trying to explore their body parts, but it could mean something else too.
What Does This Mean
Apart from exploring her ears, it can be a sign of pain and discomfort due to an ear infection. It is also seen that babies during teething do this.
How to Respond
If in case they are not teething, you can take your little one to a Paediatric ENT specialist for a thorough check-up.
8. Rubbing of Eyes
Rubbing of eyes may often be followed by a big yawn and sometimes even crying.
What Does It Mean
It simply means that she is tired and wants to sleep.
How to Respond
Just rock her for some time or pat her slowly, and she will quickly doze off. If she is crying, you can start by singing to her to calm her down first. In case she is not sleepy, you can check if she has acquired an eye infection and also consult a Paediatrician.
9. Banging Her Head
Headbanging is common among babies and nothing to worry about. It is more common among male babies than female ones.
What Does It Mean
It may look scary, and parents may get disturbed seeing their baby banging his head, but it is nothing more than a technique that babies use to comfort or self-stimulate themselves. At times, it could mean that the baby is in pain.
How to Respond
If your baby has a habit of banging his head, make sure that he is not near a wall. If he bangs his head against the railings of his crib, get the railings padded or cushioned. You can also divert his attention by reading a story to him, singing something to him or playing with him. You can consult a Paediatrician to ascertain that he is not in pain.
10. Startling
A baby getting startled while being fast asleep is a common thing. It is nothing to be worried about. It is a reflex which is quite common among babies before they are 5-6 months old.
What Does It Mean
This can mean that she got startled by some loud noise or something which disturbed her sleep.
How to Respond
Try to block all the outside noise. Making your baby sleep with some noise in the room like keeping the television or radio’s volume normal or talking over the phone may get her used to it.
11. Kicking and Breathing Quickly
Just as we adults want to do something when excited, babies kick and breath fast when they are too excited.
What Does It Mean
It simply means that she is happy and excited about something. It can be due to something or someone that she has seen or a result of being able to do something that she wants to do.
How to Respond
On seeing your baby excited, “baby talk” with her. Play with her and respond her back with equal enthusiasm.
12. Sucking Fingers
Finger or fist sucking by a baby may often be interpreted as the baby being hungry, but it may not always be so.
What Does It Mean
If your baby’s not hungry, it could also mean that your baby is trying to soothe herself in order before dozing off.
How to Respond
Firstly check if it is time for her feed. In case, it isn’t then you can just sing to her and give her a gentle pat to put her to sleep.
Understanding your baby’s body language is the first thing that you should learn as a parent. It will not only help you to nurture her better but will also help to create a strong bond between you and your little one.

Dark Nipples during Pregnancy - Reasons and Tips to Deal with It
All women know very well that one of the physical changes that accompany pregnancy is the increase in the breast size. They get a bit fuller than usual. But along with that, you might feel your nipples getting dark as well. Some women believe dark areolas are an early sign of pregnancy because of its connection with an increase in breast size. Let’s understand why this phenomenon takes place and how to handle it.
Is Nipple Darkening Normal during Pregnancy?
When any physical change occurs that is not to your liking, it will face the most questions. Many women are used to how their breasts look and tend to have their own liking to them, probably because of their partners like them, too. So any change that occurs might always not be the pleasant one, but it is absolutely normal. Dark areolas during pregnancy is a usual change that accompanies pregnancy in most women. Apart from getting darker, your nipples could get larger, too.
What Causes Nipple Darkening in Pregnancy?
As with all the changes taking place in your body, your first thought might be the right answer in this regard as well. Hormones, the be-all and end-all for anything that occurs in your body when you are pregnant. To understand when do you get dark nipples during pregnancy, it is necessary to know what the hormones affect. The pigment responsible for giving us the skin colour is termed as melanin. This is present in various parts of the body, including our hair and irises. Due to the effect of the hormones and the fluctuation in their levels, the melanin production in the skin begins to increase. This usually is stronger in areas where melanin is already present in higher quantities, which also includes your areolas and your nipples. At times, the melanin production can go off the charts resulting in any scars or freckles that you may have to get dark as well. You might even observe some dark patches forming on different areas of your body. None of these is causes to worry since it is all a result of your body changing itself to accommodate the baby. An evolutionary outlook at areola darkening harkens at making it easier for the newborn baby to spot the nipple with his weak vision and begin breastfeeding.
Is this Darkening of Nipples Permanent?
The number of physical changes that take place in your body might make you want to keep some and get rid of some. We all know what larger areas of the body we want to stay large. But many women wonder if their nipples and areolas will stay as large and dark as they are right now. In most cases, your breasts and nipples will return as close as possible to their earlier state following a few months of your delivery. Certain women might have those nipples as dark as they are for life.
Tips to Deal with Dark Nipples and Areolas during Pregnancy
The darkening of nipples and areolas along with other parts of your body is primarily a result of over-pigmentation of melanin. Therefore, it is necessary that the melanin does not receive any more stimulation to stop the darkening. This means taking care of your skin when you step out into the sun. You might be a fan of skinny dipping or skin bathing in the nude, but it is important to keep your breasts covered if you don’t want them getting darker. Exposure to sun causes melanin to produce even more to protect the skin from UV radiation. Make use of sunscreen as well to keep the skin healthy.
There are certain lotions and topical creams available in the market that take care of the darkened areas and help reduce the concentration of melanin in those regions. These are made up of different chemicals which react with the skin and its inner layers to carry out the lightening. These might be useful on other days but when you’re pregnant it might not be the best bet for you. It is best to get your doctor’s recommendation before using any of these lotions or creams since the presence of a particular element or chemical could cause harm to your baby or react adversely with your over-sensitive breasts.
The darkening of areolas is not just a physical response. It is emotional as well. Yes, it is due to the fluctuating levels of hormones but that fluctuation can also be a result of emotional health. If you have been taking undue stress about your pregnancy, or are being exposed to environments that build on your stress, such as workload at the office, or pressurising environments at home, the darkening can get worse. The key to your health, your baby’s health and your skin’s colour are all the same - enjoying your pregnancy. Revel in the fact that a life is growing inside your body and is going to call you his mother. Complement it with a diet that is properly balanced and nutritious and treat yourself by succumbing to a few cravings occasionally. When your mood is right, your nipple colour will be right as well.
Darkened areolas and dark patches on nipples during pregnancy are usually harmless. It is mostly a matter of mindset that causes most women to look at them as something unpleasant and affects their body image as well as self-worth. But learning to accept the natural body changes is how one should live and believe in the fact that a dark nipple does not change who you essentially are. You will still be loved as a mother and will always be beautiful no matter what.

Positive Coombs Test in Newborn - Do You Need to Worry?
The nine months of pregnancy, followed by labour and delivery are surely challenging but they are nothing in comparison to being a mother. Taking care of a baby and ensuring that he stays healthy and happy becomes the main goal of a mother's life. And if your newborn baby gets detected positive for the Coombs test, then no wonder it will leave you worried. A human body is very complex and therefore, many medical complications can affect your newborn baby, too. Do not panic and read on to know more about this condition in newborn babies.
What Is Coombs Test?
Our immune system produces a protein in the form of antibodies, which helps in protecting our body from different kinds of infections and ailments. However, sometimes these antibodies may work against the body and may start killing the red blood cells. Hence, your doctor may advise you to undergo antibody screening test during pregnancy to check if your antibodies are attacking the red blood cells in your body. If the doctor suspects that you have low red blood cell count, he may suggest you a blood test known as coombs test. This test is further classified into direct Coombs test newborn and indirect Coombs test.
What Does a Positive Coombs Test Mean in a Newborn Baby?
If your baby undergoes a Coombs test and the tests result are positive, this may indicate that there are chances that the mother’s blood got mixed up with the baby’s blood. This may occur if there is a disparity in the Rh factor of the blood of the mother and the baby, which means if the mother is Rh negative and the baby is Rh positive or vice versa, then certain complications may arise if the blood gets mixed up.
In order to rule out the presence of any mixed up blood, Coombs test may be performed on newborn babies by either taking blood from the umbilical cord (just after birth) or directly from the baby.
What Causes a Coombs Test to Turn Positive in a Newborn?
The main causes that may reflect positive Coombs test include the following:
If the mother and baby may have separate blood groups, mother’s blood sees the baby’s blood as an alien element in the bloodstream and thus produces antibodies against it or to kill it. These antibodies may get passed in the baby’s blood and may show positive in a DAT or direct antiglobulin test in babies.
The coombs tests may show positive results when an Rh-negative mother gets Rho(D) immune globulin shot and the traces of which may get passed on to the baby’s blood.
What Problems Can Coombs Positive Babies Face?
If your baby is adjudged Coombs positive, he may suffer from either of the following issues:
1. Anaemia
Anaemia is a condition that may occur when there are fewer red blood cells in the body than the required amount. Coombs positive babies may have a reduced red blood cell count in their body, which can make the baby sluggish, lethargic, sleepy, feed poorly and many other complications. Such babies may sometimes require nutrition through an IV. It is not necessary that coombs positive babies will be anaemic; however, it may increase their chances of having anaemia.
2. Jaundice
Though most newborn babies have certain degrees of jaundice that subsides on its own in most cases. However, babies who are detected coombs positive may be at a higher risk of developing jaundice. This condition increases the bilirubin levels in the baby’s body and higher levels of bilirubin may put your baby at the risk of experiencing brain damage and other health complications.
How to Take Care of a Coombs Positive Baby
Babies are delicate and if your baby is Coombs positive then he requires extra care. Here’s how you can take care of him:
It is important that you pay heed to breastfeed the coombs positive newborn because breast milk is loaded with antibodies that may help your baby fight the symptoms of jaundice.
The doctors and other medical teams may keep your baby under observation and monitor your baby’s progress closely.
Your baby may be required to undergo regular tests to monitor his anaemia and jaundice.
If your baby is suffering from severe jaundice then your doctor may advise for photo-therapy. Photo-therapy is a procedure that requires your baby to be placed under a special light bulb that may help in breaking down the bilirubin and thus curing the symptoms of jaundice.
Sometimes your baby may suffer from a severe case of anaemia or jaundice, which may require extensive medical procedures and treatments. In case such a situation arises you may be told about the procedures and their implications, too.
Are There Any Long-Term Complications for Coombs Positive Infants?
As soon as you deliver your baby, there is no more mixing of blood that may happen. Also, as per the severity of your baby’s condition, the doctor will keep your baby under observation and offer the required treatment. Slowly and gradually your baby’s blood may get rid of the alien blood and start making new blood cells. In most cases, coombs disease in newborns does not cause any long-term complications.
When Can a Coombs Positive Newborn Go Home?
You can take a coombs positive newborn home at the usual time. But you will be required to visit the hospital for a review in a few days to check if your baby is recovering well or not. However, if you notice any changes in your baby’s complexion or if your baby’s face starts looking paler, this could mean that his anaemia or jaundice may be becoming severe. In such cases, your baby may be monitored closely or you may be required to stay in the hospital if your baby’s condition becomes more critical.
There are many medical complications that may affect the health of a newborn baby. It can be overwhelming for the parents; however, you must trust your doctor and work as a team with your doctor for the speedy recovery of your baby. Most cases of coombs positive babies may not exhibit any severe complications and thus can be effectively managed by proper care and medical treatment.

From Concerned Parents to Comfortable Parents
"She's so light weighted. Why don't you feed her enough"? Many people used to say this about my daughter. A few months back I told my husband we need to change Sayesha's paediatric. He asked me why? He is the best paediatric in the town. This happened when my baby was 6 months old and she was not gaining weight as per the growth chart.
We went to a new paediatric and again found no signs of weight gain in Sayesha. We changed 3 paediatrics but in vain. She was active and growing tall but was underweight. Every day I used to think how can I increase my baby's weight. I was really pestering her to eat .. eat and only eat. This left me frustrated everyday.
Recently, I went to a doctor for my checkup and he asked me what is troubling you. I told him about Sayesha and about my only concern relating to her weight. And then after listening to his advice all my stress and tension was resolved. His few lines came as a magic spell.
He said "Don't become concerned parents, become comfortable parents."
Don't bother her with your worries. Let her learn and explore the world. That night I was relieved. Next day was different. I woke up with a different mindset. From that day I stopped bothering about her weight and I started enjoying her childhood and her activities which made me happy and I was realised that I was actually missing this fun in my life.
Today Sayesha is 16 months old and has started gaining weight. Bottom line of writing and sharing this story is that if your child is active and doing all the activities for his / her age then your child is fine.
If you will relish your parenthood then your child will relish his/her childhood.

Daily Routine of a Nine-month-Pregnancy- Eating Habits, Yoga, and Daily Activities
Hello to all mommies and to-be mommies. Today, I will talk about some healthy practices a woman should follow during her pregnancy.
A woman feels great when she hears about her pregnancy. No doubt, it’s a great feeling. When you get pregnant for the first time, you become very conscious about the baby and yourself. It is by far very natural, but at the same time, you should not get too much conscious. You need to feel relaxed and engage yourself in different activities. You can also partake in simple exercises and yoga after consulting your doctor. Trust me; there is no harm in doing exercises. I have personally experienced this.
You should eat whatever you feel like. By this, I do not mean eating unhealthy food, like a burger, pizza, or any other fast food much, but the best option would be salads of different kinds like cucumber, onion, tomato, etc. You should also include juices in your diet, including juices of amla, beetroot, and carrot. Green chutney of curry leaves, dhania, and tulsi are rich in antioxidants and help to a great extent. You can have a five-colour salad and Iron-Folic Acid tablets daily in the afternoon (after consulting your doctor) and milk and curd in the morning and evening. Take milk products after or before four hours of taking an iron tablet. And last but not least, drink lots of water.
One thing to avoid the most is smoking. It is unhealthy for you and your unborn child. It increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, premature birth, miscarriage, and other poor outcomes. Reducing stress, on the other hand, is crucial for improving birth outcomes. Pregnant women should avoid stressful situations as much as they can. Ask your loved ones to help you manage your stress level. If you follow all these tips, it will help make you strong during your pregnancy period and even in delivery pains. You can also listen to pleasant, soothing music and go for regular check-ups.
Thank you so much for reading this article. I hope you all liked it and will follow the tips mentioned above for pregnancy care.

A. Yes it is the what part is that your child is kicking if you feel that there is a movement of your child whether it is a cake or slight movement also you know that your child is doing fine so there is no problem in that if the movement is less it’s completely alright

Q. #asktheexperts what to do if the baby’s nose is blovked

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.

A. You can check with an ovulation kit if it is positive then you can certainly go ahead with the conception because ovulation kit is going to give you 100% clarity whether you are ovulating or not with that you can try practising if you can conceive the same time
