10 of the Best Pets to Consider for Your Kids
Children are amused and fascinated by animals - a lot of them even throw tantrums about wanting to take them home! Pets are known to nurture the growth of children in an effective manner. Pet animals for kids can range from the usual ones we know of, to some unique ones, if your child shows affection towards it. Here is some information that can help you make an informed choice.
Top 10 Pets for Children - What's Perfect for your Child
Here are some pets that are perfect for your child.
1. Dogs
The default choice of pet for every household across the world, dogs, are adored by most.
Advantages
The bond between a child and a dog is very strong - it has also been seen widely among pet lovers across the world. Dogs are gentle and loving, and they can make for good companions both inside and outside the house. Having a dog can push your child to go out and play more, as dogs require a fair amount of exercise as well. Dogs are extremely loyal to their owners.
Disadvantages
Dogs can be high-maintenance pets. They require a good amount of care and training. As playful as they might be, dogs may accidentally bite their owners or people they don't like.
2. Cats
Cats are adorable, and can easily blend in well with the rest of the family.
Advantages
Cats may not be as playful as dogs, but they still make for a good companion if your child wants a pet. Cats require little maintenance - they often take care of themselves.
Disadvantages
Cats are independent creatures - unlike dogs, cats are not always loyal to their owners and may run away from time to time. There is also a higher chance of your child contracting allergies from cats as opposed to dogs. Cats are moody and defensive and can retaliate if disturbed.
3. Birds
Birds are not only colourful and nice to look at, but they also bring joy into the household through their melodies.
Advantages
Some kids do not like physically touching animals, but enjoy watching them from afar - birds are the perfect companion for such kids. The musical sounds of birds can be a matter of fascination for children, and most birds are non-threatening and can stay in their cages without any trouble.
Disadvantages
Handling and training a bird takes time and patience, and it is important for your kid to have them both. Birds can make quite a mess in their cages, and cleaning their cages is quite a tedious task.
4. Fish
Quiet and calm, fish can add beauty to your home.
Advantages
Certain kids prefer pets that are calmer, so they can observe them quietly. A fish is one of the best pets for toddlers since all it takes is clean water and food at regular intervals. Some brightly-coloured fish can also intrigue your child and entertain him.
Disadvantages
It is important to make sure that you are feeding the right kind of food to your fish, and feeding it in the right quantity is absolutely necessary. Cleaning the container or tank every once in a while is necessary to prevent a build-up of waste and germs.
5. Hamsters
Tiny and entertaining, hamsters rarely run out of energy.
Advantages
Extremely cute at first sight, a hamster makes for a great pet, provided your kid will look after it constantly. Installing a hamster wheel in the pet's cage is the best way to keep it occupied.
Disadvantages
Hamsters are known to get messy rather quickly, and the smell can be unpleasant to the point of being unbearable. Hamster cages require frequent cleaning and maintenance and skipping out on it usually not an option, owing to the smell.
6. Ants
These are less like pets and more of an interesting entity to be observed.
Advantages
Ants are an unusual pet to have, but they are perfect for kids who like to observe animal behaviour without the hassle of taking care of it. Creating a small ant farm and watching the ants as they gather food and create their homes can be interesting.
Disadvantages
Your child might get bored with ants as they lack the human connect a lot of other animals have. Also, you will have to take extra care at all times to make sure the ants do not find their way into your house.
7. Guinea Pigs
Rather unconventional, but guinea pigs can be found in many households.
Advantages
Guinea pigs can be handled easily since they rarely bite a person. They are smart and respond to a lot of your child's actions.
Disadvantages
Guinea pigs are generally social and almost always require a companion. They hate tiny spaces and require a large area to live. They largely depend on vitamin C, and hence, require healthy food items constantly.
8. Mice
Mice make for good pets as well.
Advantages
Mice do not require a large space to live and can be taken care of easily. Simply put a bunch of female mice together, and watch them lead their happiest lives! Children can easily play with mice as they are easy to train and get entertained easily. A regular rodent diet of food blocks is enough to keep them happy.
Disadvantages
Mice, by their very nature, are agile and skittish, which makes them difficult to get a hold of. It is best to keep them observational pets. Mice are nocturnal creatures, and thus can make sounds and move around through the night.
9. Rabbits
The most adorable pets of them all, after dogs, of course, rabbits are great pets for toddlers.
Advantages
Extremely cute and cuddly, rabbits take their time to get used to human touch. However, once they do, they make great pets. Your kid will have fun carrying the rabbit around the house in his pocket or on his head and the rabbit will mostly stay put, simply observing around.
Disadvantages
Since rabbits are social, they require constant attention. At the same time, they do not like to be constantly held. Their cages also require regular cleaning and unattended rabbits can create quite a mess in the house. Rabbits also multiply terribly quickly, so make sure to get a same-sex pair if you want to get more than one.
10. Turtle
This pet may end up becoming the oldest member of your family, and also the wisest.
Advantages
Turtles are calm, gentle, and peaceful creatures. Children are known to be endlessly fascinated by them, and they often have long conversations with them since turtles can stay in one position for long durations.
Disadvantages
A turtle requires multiple environmental conditions to be appropriately set for its survival. Turtles also have a tremendous lifespan, so there's a chance that your child will be taking care of it even when he's in high school! If your child is less than five years old, avoid getting a turtle as it is known to spread salmonella.
Some tips to remember before getting a pet for your child:
Always adopt. Buying a fancy breed is a bad idea because animals like dogs and cats are bred in inhumane conditions for money. While the thought of having a fancy, luxurious dog breed is exciting, adopting abandoned animals living in shelters and giving them a good life is a noble idea.
Ensure that your child is serious about wanting a pet, because it is a long commitment.
Read extensively about the pet you are about to adopt. Ask around and find people who have first-hand experience with the pet to know what you are in for.
Establish ground rules in the house before the pet comes. Communicate to your little one that taking care of the pet will be a joint responsibility, and that he will also have to do his part and not leave it to someone else.
Keep an eye out on good veterinarians around your home, in case of emergencies. Do the same for pet food supply stores.
Lastly, be patient when taking care of your pet. It may take a while to adjust to this new being in the house, but it will surely be worth it.
Having pets can teach your kid a lot of things about life and about social interaction. Small pets for kids are easier to look after and your child can also learn to handle them the right way. Make an informed choice based on your preference and practicality, and your kid will have a companion they have so looked forward to.

10 Best Ways to Spend Time with Your Family
All of us are so occupied in our lives and in chasing our dreams that we struggle to make time for our family. A family is the biggest asset that one could ask for, hence it is important to spend time with loved ones. No matter how busy you are, your family needs you, the same way you need them. Spending time with your family will help you bond and understand one another. If you want to know how does spending time with your family reduce stress, read on to find out!
Why Spending Quality Time with Your Family is More Important Than You Think?
“Spending quality time with your family is important” - we’ve heard this time and again. However, most people do not realise that the operative word here is ‘quality’, as opposed to ‘time’. You can spend hours on end with your family, but how you spend this time is what matters. In simple words, quality stumps quantity, again. Here are a few reasons why spending quality time with your family is important: -
1. To Strengthen the Bond
Spending good time with your family will help strengthen relationships with one another. Children especially, need to feel like they belong. This is a significant reason why children form groups and befriend each other at school. Adults too require a sense of belonging. This arises from the fact that we are all social beings. Spending time with your family will make every member feel like a part of something special. It also reduces stress as it makes you happy and contented to be with your loved ones.
2. To Inculcate Values
Children need to be nurtured and guided along the right path. Spending time with your family can help you teach values to your children. Children tend to imitate their elders. By not spending time with them, they, in turn, might end up doing the same with their children, which is why you need to spend quality time with them and have a good laugh. Make memories with your children because it will help them learn that little things matter. Spending time with them will also give them the opportunity to learn values from you.
3. To Show Kids That They Matter
Your children need you. Not being around them will make them feel like they don’t matter to you. Children crave attention, especially from their parents. And as a responsible parent, you need to be there for them in their achievements and most importantly, at times when they feel low. Spending time with your kids will make them realise that they matter to you.
4. To Teach and Learn New Things
When you spend time with your family, you obviously discuss new things. This is the best way to share interesting information, news, or simply, hold engaging conversations. Children are always, all ears. No doubt, they will love to hear something interesting and tell their tales of school. This way, the whole family learns something new.
5. To Pass on Traditions
Every family has a set of traditions that are passed on through generations. It could be something as simple as having a secret handshake or going to a fancy restaurant once a month. Traditions make you feel special together.
6. To Learn to Deal with Highs and Lows Together
A family means being there for each other in both the good and the bad. A family is all about fighting the odds, together. Familial bonds are beautiful, and the whole point of being a family is to support one another through thick and thins. When you spend quality time with your family, you get to know what's going on in each other's lives.
7. To Understand One Another
When you spend time with your family, you get to know your loved ones better. This way, you understand them well. You learn what they love, their pet peeves, and their fears. The more time you spend with your loved ones, the more you will understand them.
10 Ideas to Maximize Family Time
Now that you know why spending time with your family is so important, try these ways to spend quality time with your loved ones.
1. Have At Least One Meal Together
Make it a point to have at least one meal together as a family. You could have breakfast or dinner together. We know that having lunch together every day is not possible because of your jobs but don't let that stop you from spending time as a family Enjoy a meal together, share your thoughts and feelings, and spend quality time.
2. Exercise or Workout Together
Working out with your family members can be a lot of fun. This is a double win for all as this way you will be healthy as well. Join the local gym, or simply, work out at home if you've got the equipment. You can also teach your kids to exercise. Start teaching simple exercises to your kids; once they get a knack of it, they will look forward to exercising schedules and spending time with you.
3. Go for a Walk After Dinner
There's just something beautiful about the nights, don't you think? There is silence but it is peaceful. It's the best time to go for a walk. After your meal and before going to bed, make it a point to take a walk or stroll on the empty road outside. Take your family along. Talk to each other, make plans for the future, and just enjoy!
4. Pick a Book to Read
You could read a book to your little one. Inculcating the habit of reading is a great way to expand knowledge and creativity. Pick a good book to read, and you can later discuss what you've read. This way you can spend time with your kid and help him learn a new story as well.
5. Plan a Day Out Each Month
Once a month, go out on a field trip or picnic. And every year, plan a vacation to a place where you have never been before. Travelling and visiting places can be great fun and is a fantastic way to spend some quality time with your family.
6. Turn Off Your Phone
You're with your family. The plan is to spend quality time. Taking calls, especially from work, should be the last thing you do when you're spending time with your family. So, switch off your phones and focus on each other.
7. Cook a Meal Together
Cooking is a great activity and doing this together as a family is a great way to spend family time. You can cook a new dish each time, or stick to an old tradition and cook a particular dish that is an old recipe passed on through generations.
8. Clean the House Together
Cleaning the house may not sound fun, but when you do it together as a family, it becomes fun. You could revamp your house, move the furniture around, and get rid of all that clutter. At the end of the day, you'll be satisfied to see that you did something productive and spent time with your family as well.
9. Spread Smiles
Doing a good deed for people will not only make them happy but you as well. You could visit an old-age home, orphanage, or an NGO. The choice is yours, just make sure that you spend a good time there and bring a smile on the faces of the people who need to smile more often. Helping others will instil a sense of gratitude and love in all your family members.
10. Help Your Children with Their School Work
Take some time off to help your children with their school work. You need to know what's going on in your child's life, and at this point, school is their second home. Helping them out with their homework will allow you to figure out their weaknesses and strong points. Sparing time to spend with the children will instil a sense of confidence in them as well. They will be more open to coming face to face with their weaknesses and fears they have about school if you are by their side.
Spending time with your family is not a chore, it is a privilege. To have people in your life who love you immensely is a blessing. Do not take your loved ones for granted. Spend time with them and make memories.

Reasons to Have a Maternity Insurance
You have nine months to plan the perfect way to raise your little one. Needless to say, you also want the best medical facility available at the time of childbirth. But, the soaring hospital bills burn a hole in the pocket. Don’t you worry! Even though a maternity insurance policy doesn’t come as an individual plan, most of the health insurances provide maternity insurance as a rider.
With expenses running anywhere between INR 1 Lakh to 2 Lakhs, getting a maternity policy is a good way to reduce the financial burden. Insurance companies have recently started providing maternity coverage along with group policies to companies. Individual health policies also provide an option of adding a rider to the existing plan, but it comes at an additional price.
1. Reasons to Take a Maternity Health Insurance
Don’t you want the best medical care available in your city for your baby and yourself? Maternity insurance helps at the time of the payment. With a good number of insurance companies offering cashless payment, the actual amount paid for the maternity care is a lot less than the actual bill.
Whichever hospital you choose, they will take care of you. You will be visited by your gynecologist, special consultants, RMOs, pediatrician regularly. Most maternity insurances take care of the doctor’s consultancy fees.
2. Things to Consider Before Buying a Maternity Health Policy
Insurance companies will pay only a certain amount for the charges incurred during the delivery of the baby, known as a maternity cap. For example, the cap for a normal delivery is between INR 15,000 to 25,000 whereas for a caesarean delivery it is between INR 20,000 to 40,000.
The waiting period for reimbursement of maternity insurance policy is very high. The claim can take as long as three years to reach your bank account. Keep the waiting period in mind while planning your family.
If your employer offers health insurance, check for maternity coverage and its waiting period.
Pick a plan with no sub-limit or a pre-decided limit on expenditure. Having this information will help you evade the sudden financial burden.
3. The Right Time to Buy a Maternity Insurance in India
As a maternity insurance rider comes along with your health insurance, invest in it while you are young. Your premium depends heavily on your age at the time of purchasing the health insurance. Most companies provide the insurance even after getting pregnant.
4. List of Coverage Under the Plan
Every insurer has a different coverage plan. Most of the policies cover:
Hospitalization expense 30 days prior to delivery and 60 days post-delivery.
Complications such as pre-mature birth, caesarean, etc.
Cashless claims.
Tax saving benefits under 80 D.
Health coverage for your baby.
However, the coverage by the issuer is rejected if the pregnancy is terminated within 12 weeks.
5. Types of Available Maternity Insurance Plans in India
There are some insurance companies that offer unique benefits for maternity health insurance.
Apollo DKV takes care of day care coverage and pre and post-delivery expenditure.
ICICI Lombard’s Health Advantage Plus provides coverage for OPD, pre-natal examinations and medical costs.
United India Insurance’s group policy covers maternity expenses. The patients are entitled to receive an amount of INR 50,000 or the sum insured, whichever is less.
Pregnancy is a beautiful period of a woman’s life, but with skyrocketing medical expenses, it has become prudent to have a maternity cover. Who doesn’t want to get relieved of worries and welcome their baby knowing he is in good care? Consider it as a gift for your baby and yourself. Read more

Cream of Mushroom Soup
This classic soup packs in distinctly intense earthy flavors and has a smooth creamy texture. Plus, it's so easy to prepare that probably the hardest part about it is the slicing of the mushrooms.
