I Am Not a Lazy Modern Mom of Today
I use diapers for my baby, but I'm not a lazy modern mom. I do thousands of chores and keep on running around the home for the whole day.
When 8 months back, in January I delivered my baby, the first advice I got on was diapering. Doctors handed us our baby in a diaper and all the elderly ladies (our neighbours or my mother in law's friends or ladies of my own family) told me not to use diapers. I didn't understand why? Because to use cloth nappy outside the comfort of the home feels very unhygienic and also it was the winters to keep the new born open and wet. I asked the doctor if I could use diapers, he told me I can and gave me few tips-
Always change the diaper in every 4 to 5 hours, soiled or not.
Keep on checking it. If it's heavy change it. Or sometimes baby just pass a little pop with gas, if so change it.
Every time you change use diaper rash cream. Pat dry baby bum before putting on another diaper.
Use moist wipes or cotton to wipe (I used Luke warm water and cotton as those were the cold days of January).
I ordered several pack of new born diapers. I was very sure I'm going to keep my baby warm and dry. People kept in pouring their intelligence about how bad it is to use the diapers. They would say to my mother in law, "In our days we do not have diapers, but we raised our kids well..this is just the thing of lazy mothers of today who don't want to have extra laundry loads."
I'm sorry but I don't agree to this, at all. I know I'm not lazy. Using diaper to me is not about easing my work, but it's about the comfort of my baby. But how to make them understand without being rude or without making them feel offended?
They cursed the usage of diapers so much so that even my mother in law, who was earlier not against of the diapers was stopping me to use it now. This was making my baby uncomfortable, she was not able to sleep properly as she would pee during her sleep and I have to change her. I would change not just the nappies but the blanket, sheets, wrapper, and all her cloths as they all go drenched. All this frequent changing session was making her an all-time cranky baby which was unbearable.
"Mummy ji I am going to use diapers." I said to my mother in law. She gave me a shocking look and said, "But diapers cause skin irritation and rashes to babies.. everyone is telling so." I know I've to make her understand as they have never used it in life (because it was not available then) and so it is not her fault. I told her that frequent changing session is not allowing twinkle (my daughter) to have proper sleep. Deprived of sleep she is cranky all the time and not feeding properly. I also showed her the articles and videos on my phone regarding the diaper which says they are absolutely safe.
In the meantime my mother in law's younger sister who lives in USA but have came to India just to welcome the new member of our family, came inside and said, "Didi in USA nobody use cloth nappy, but babies are fine. And if you say these things were not present in olden days then there were so many other things which were not present in old days but are present and used today. We have gas cylinders now, we have washing machines, refrigerator, AC and most important, electricity. Don't they need to be handled with care and precaution? Cylinders can blast, there can be a short circuit, we can get shock, or anything else. But still we use it thou carefully. Anyways, diapers are still more safe and nothing like that, so severe will ever happen by the way didi, Do you want to go to the primitive age?" And she laughed.
Listening to her argument, my mother in law too started laughing. She went to the cupboard while she was still smiling, pulled out a diaper, applied diaper rash cream and put on the diaper to twinkle. After which twinkle slept peacefully. She was not cranky anymore. And soon in three months she developed a proper sleep routine, which is still followed by her.
P.S. This article is based on my real experience. I never noticed any problem using diapers. It is not that I never use cloth nappy. I have used diapers 24*7 uptill march after which we switched to cloth nappy during the day and diapers during the nights or while going out or depending upon the weather. Diapers are not the bad thing. Neither it means your household chores will get lighter, nor it means you will be left with ample of time to relax. But definitely you will get a little more time to enjoy with your family and your bundle of joy by ensuring that your baby is feeling joyful too.

Stammering (Stuttering) in Kids
Little children start picking up words and sounds as they grow older. At times, they are trying to gather the right sounds and words to talk to you, and this is a learning process. However, there are cases when some children can face an unusual struggle in communicating smoothly, and you might find them stuttering.
What is Stuttering?
Stuttering or stammering is a condition whereby kids find it difficult to speak smoothly and coherently. Most often, stuttering happens at the beginning of a sentence when children repeat the first letter a few times till they get it right. However, there are times when stuttering can happen throughout the sentence as well.
What Causes Stammering in Children?
Neurogenic stuttering – This is a slight delay/ problem with the nervous system.
Family history – Stuttering is seen to be genetic in some cases.
Development during childhood – Developmental delays or other issues in development can be a cause of stuttering.
High/increased activity level – Children seem to stutter when they are tired or exhausted as a result of high energy activities.
The rapid rate of speech - When the child talks really fast and is trying to talk to the adults, you can notice him stuttering.
Signs of Stuttering in Kids
You can observe these signs to figure out if the child is just in loss of words or if he is actually stuttering.
The sounds and syllables of words are repeated, and this happens extensively.
The tension in the facial muscle of the child.
The child is almost 5 years of age.
What is the Difference Between Normal Stuttering and Stuttering That is a Problem?
Your child is picking up new words. He will stutter, but this will decrease over time. But if the child is having trouble with certain sounds and it is increasing, then it isn't normal.
Normal dysfluency happens when the mind is finding words faster than the tongue is able to say it out loud. It is mostly seen when your child is exhausted. This sign is seen only for 2 to 3 months; but if it persists, then it is a problem.
When Does Stammering in Kids Start?
In most cases, parents have noticed stammering in toddlers in the period when he is developing language and communication skills. This is when your baby is picking new words and sounds that he has heard for a while. This happens mostly between the age groups if 2 to 5.
How Much and How Often Do Children Stutter?
The stammering problem in a child is seen when they learn to talk; it might last for a few weeks or some months. The stuttering is also mostly sporadic. When stuttering is a real problem, you will find children struggling much more than normal. You will also notice that the signs are not reducing as the child grows older. Some kids may stutter while speaking every other sentence. You will notice the repetition of sounds. (For eg: Sh-sh-sh-shop)
What Are Effects of Stammering?
Some children who struggle with stuttering can face quite a few problems when they go to school. It may affect their confidence levels, and at times, they may become highly introverted because of fear of judgement from their peers and teachers. These are things that need to be addressed. If your child is in a school, then you can talk to the teacher about this problem. If the child gets too stressed out about this problem, his stuttering may worsen. For this, provide a conducive and encouraging environment for your child to speak up in, and don't rush him to finish his sentences either. Let him take his time but do it on his own, as this will help him build confidence.
When to Seek Medical Help?
Your child will consistently repeat the entire word without improvement.
Words prolonged more than normal.
Words are highly strained.
You will find that your child is altering words because he fears that he may stutter.
Repetition of sounds is seen to happen more frequently.
There is vocal tension that happens.
Tightness in the facial muscle is identified when your child talks.
Along with stuttering, you also notice signs of uncomfortable body movements.
There are other specific concerns that you begin to see in your baby’s speech development.
Your baby avoids talking because he fears stammering.
Stuttering Treatment for Kids
You need to get your child medical attention only if the child is actually struggling with prolonged stuttering issues. When you approach speech therapy for the stuttering child, they will help the child in pronouncing words right in a relaxed manner. Over time, they will help the child to increase the number of words within a sentence. Other things that are done during treatment is helping the child overcome other secondary characteristics such as blinking and twitching.
What Can Parents Do to Help a Child Who Stutters?
Don’t ask your child to stop when he is stuttering and start over.
Sometimes children face a lot of pressure when they are expected to talk. Allow him to relax and continue to talk.
If you find your child struggling as she stutters, just try and see if you can encourage your little one to do some other activity.
Don’t force your child to talk. Instead, encourage more one-on-one conversations with the child so that he can be more relaxed.
Don’t criticize the child or tell the child directly to slow down. Rather, just encourage the child indirectly to do as he pleases.
If the child is stuttering too much, don’t alarm the child in any way.
If the child mentions about being embarrassed while talking, encourage him and remind him of how important he is rather than trying to fix the problem.
Make him feel acceptable whatever the situation is.
Make sure to visit a recognized therapist who can help him in this process.
Make your child feel important and valuable even when things don’t get better. This is the best way to help your child during this situation.

Hepatitis and Breastfeeding
When you embrace motherhood and start breastfeeding your baby, you realise that these moments spent with your child will always be special to you. Breastfeeding a baby ensures his good health and also bonds the two of you. But if you are suffering from a transmittable disease like hepatitis, it can be heart-breaking as you cannot be sure if you can breastfeed your child or not.
What Is Hepatitis?
When a virus causes an inflammation of the liver, it is known as hepatitis. There are five types of hepatitis - Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. A few of its types can be caused as a result of some medication, toxins, drugs and alcohol, whereas 'autoimmune hepatitis' occurs when the body produces antibodies against its own liver tissue. Hepatitis A is an acute and short-term disease, Hepatitis B, C, and D can become chronic. However, hepatitis E is usually acute.
Common Symptoms of Hepatitis
Chronic and infectious forms of hepatitis do not show any symptoms in the beginning, and they only show once the liver has already been damaged. For acute hepatitis, symptoms appear very quickly. The symptoms are as follows:
Fatigue
Flu symptoms
Pale stool
Dark urine
Abdominal pain
Unexplained weight loss
Loss of appetite
Yellow skin and eyes; symptoms related to jaundice
Can You Breastfeed with Hepatitis?
Though it has been concluded that it is safe to breastfeed your child if you have hepatitis, it is always safe to take certain precautions to prevent it from affecting your child. The 'American Academy of Paediatrics' considers breastfeeding good for the development and the good health of their newborn children. But one should first determine the type of hepatitis they have and how it gets transmitted. You should always speak to your doctor if you have hepatitis, before breastfeeding your baby.
How Do Different Hepatitis Infections Affect Breastfed Babies?
It is based on the severity of your case and the type of hepatitis you are suffering from that will decide whether or not you can breastfeed your child safely. Here are some of the ways in which different hepatitis infections can affect breastfed babies:
1. Hepatitis A
Here we look at HAV and how it fares with breastfeeding.
What Is It?
This virus is commonly known as HAV and is mostly spread through the faecal-oral way. This means that consuming contaminated food or water or indulging in oral or anal sex can lead to contracting the disease. Any other way through which the faecal matter passes from one person to another is also responsible for transmitting the disease.
Risks To Baby
Babies or kids under the age of six years, usually do not show any symptoms of Hepatitis A, so it is hard to tell if they have this disease or not. However, if they do, the disease can still pass on to those who are not vaccinated, especially their parents or caregivers.
2. Hepatitis B
Here we look at the relationship between hepatitis B positive mother and breastfeeding.
What Is It?
Hepatitis B is transmitted through contaminated blood. The virus carrying hepatitis B can be present in other body fluids, but it becomes infectious when there are high levels of virus in the blood, saliva or semen. It is spread through needle sharing and sexual intercourse with someone who is infected.
Risks To Baby
Hepatitis B can be very serious and life-threatening in babies. Newborn babies who get infected have a 90% chance of becoming carriers of the disease and passing it onto others. Once they reach adulthood, they carry a higher risk of developing liver cancer or cirrhosis of the liver, eventually leading to death.
If you have this condition and want to breastfeed your child, make sure that you do not have cracked and bleeding nipples as this will cause your child to be infected.
3. Hepatitis C
Here we look at Hepatitis C and breastfeeding. Let's find out if you can breastfeed if you are hepatitis C positive.
What Is It?
Like HBV, HCV can be transmitted through blood. It is very rare for it to be passed through sexual contact as it is not present in the semen or vaginal fluids. The main route of transfer is through injecting drugs, especially when the needles are shared.
Risks To Baby
Children do not show the symptoms of HCV and about 40% of children outgrow the disease by the age of two. Some may take longer, but the disease will not affect their growth or development. However, their liver will need to be monitored as they grow. Babies that are bottle-fed too have the same rate of infection as those who are breastfed, so if you want to breastfeed your child, consult your doctor.
4. Hepatitis D
Here the relationship between Hepatitis D and breastfeeding is explained.
What Is It?
HDV is a type of Hepatitis that is transferable only when HBV is present, and it happens in the same way that the HBV is transmitted from one person to another.
Risks To Baby
The symptoms of hepatitis D are similar to the symptoms of hepatitis B, only its presence makes them worse, putting your child at a higher risk for liver damage. Mothers who have HDV can breastfeed their children, keeping in mind the precautions that need to be taken in case of cracked nipples. It is important that the baby is given the HBV shot at birth.
5. Hepatitis E
This is the type of hepatitis that can become quite deadly in pregnant women.
What Is It?
Prevalent in parts of Africa, Asia and Central America, its virus is transferred through oral-faecal routes, similar to HAV. Pregnant women who have HEV can develop acute liver failure and should be especially careful.
Risks To Baby
About 15% - 50% of infants born to mothers with HEV in India have died within the first week of birth as there is an extremely high risk of transferring the disease to the baby if proper care is not taken.
Mothers with HEV are generally considered safe to breastfeed their children. However, if they have a higher viral load, there is a chance their breast milk will be infected. In such cases, mothers should opt for bottle feeding formula milk to their babies.
Points to Remember for Hepatitis Positive Moms while Feeding Infants
Here are some points that you need to keep in mind when it comes to dealing with Hepatitis and nursing your newborn:
If you are suffering from cracked nipples, talk to your doctor about a safe nipple cream that you can use soothe your pain. You can ask about using Aloe Vera gel as it is extremely moisturizing and does not have any chemicals in it.
Find out what tests can be done in order to help diagnose a hepatitis infection.
Always maintain hygiene as it can help curb the spread of the infection.
Be careful in public washrooms and be sure to wash your hands thoroughly.
The advantages of breastfeeding surpass the risks involved in a mother who has a Hepatitis infection. For the most part, mothers are free to, and even encouraged to breastfeed their baby. Always ensure to keep up with all your doctor’s appointments, whether they be yours, or your little ones. This will ensure maximum safety as you will always be aware of the virus present and will be able to take whatever precautions are necessary under the guidance of your doctor.
