When and Why Do We Celebrate Independence Day?
Indian people were done with the British rule and so they decided in 1929 to demand full independence from the British on 26th January 1930. However, the British did not agree to this and went on to rule India until 15th August 1947.
On July 18, 1947, the British had passed a law that stated that on 15th August 1947, India would become an independent country and would cease to be a part of the British Empire. Thus, India gained its freedom on the latter date, and since then, every 15th August is celebrated as India’s Independence Day. It must be noted that the date of 26th January was still remembered and later became the date when India became a republic nation in 1950.
Independence Day is celebrated in remembrance of the sacrifices that our leaders made so that we could live as free citizens and as the masters of our own destiny.
History of Independence Day of India
The British came as traders to India in the 1600’s and were allowed trading rights by the powerful Indian Emperor Jehangir. India was then ruled by the Mughals who were too powerful for the British. It is only later when the Mughal empire disintegrated that the British began to conquer small parts of India. Starting with the battle of Plassey in 1757, the British began expanding rapidly throughout India till 1857.
In 1857, the Indians were fed up of the British, and there was a massive uprising throughout Northern India where Indian leaders of different backgrounds fought against the British. It is famously known as the first battle of Independence, and the British stopped expanding to other territories within India after this.
The British went on to rule India despite the freedom movement. The struggle for freedom brought the nation together. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, started many movements to force the British to leave India. By 1945, the British economy was destroyed because of World War 2, and they knew it was only a matter of time before they leave. However, on this happy day, there was also the tragedy of partition where India was divided into India and Pakistan.
How Is 15th August Celebrated in India by Children?
Independence Day is celebrated with great pomp throughout the country. Independence Day is a national holiday in India. But in schools, celebrations usually take place for an hour or two. In schools, children celebrate India's Independence Day by singing patriotic songs, reciting speeches, and dancing on patriotic songs. Songs such as Hum Sab Bhartiya Hain, Vande Mataram, Hum Honge Kamiyab are sung on this Day. The Indian flag is unfurled, kids sing the national anthem. Sweets are distributed in the end. On the 15th of August, the Indian flag is seen in the hand of every child. Kids even ride their cycle around the neighbourhood with the Indian flag majestically fluttering as the cycle picks up speed.
Interesting Facts About Indian Independence Day
Here are some interesting facts about India's Independence Day that you can tell your kids.
When India became independent, it had no national anthem. 'Jana Gana Mana' by Rabindranath Tagore, which was first sung in 1911 was declared the national anthem of India in the year 1950.
When India became independent, it did not have a prime minister, president or even a government. All of this happened only much later when India became a republic nation. During the time of independence, the Governor General was the most important and powerful person in India.
Many parts of India were in fact, different kingdoms during independence. It has been recorded that when India became independent, there were as many as 565 princely states or kingdoms. All of that changed quickly as Sardar Vallabhai Patel, and other leaders used different strategies to incorporate these kingdoms into India. Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad, Mysore and Travancore were just some of the big kingdoms that became a part of India after Independence.
India is not the only country that celebrates Independence Day on 15th August. There are others that share the same day as their Independence Day. However, these countries became independent in different years. These countries are Bahrain, North Korea, Congo, Liechtenstein and South Korea.
Goa was a Portuguese colony even after Independence and only became a part of India in 1961.
Officially, the celebration of Independence Day by the Government of India takes place at the Red Fort in New Delhi. Here, the Prime Minister gives a speech to the nation.
The Independence of India also brought about the partition of the country on religious lines. Many people from the Hindu and Muslim community were killed due to the communal tension and hatred, which became prominent during this time. Many have gone on to say that it resulted in the largest human migration in history. However, it must also be remembered that during these tough times, many people risked their lives to save their neighbours from the opposite community.
Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, did not take part in the first Independence Day celebration. He went on a hunger strike so that people stop killing each other due to partition.
The job of carving out the borders of Independent India was given to a man called Cyril John Radcliffe. The irony is that he had never been to India and had been given the challenging task of its division. He was so hurt by the destruction it caused that he refused his salary of 40,000 INR which was a big amount in those days.
Not many people know these facts about Indian Independence Day. Tell these to your child so that he can learn about his country's struggle for independence and respect the nation. If we have missed out on some lesser-known facts about Independence Day, do let us know in the comments!

Ringworm in Babies: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
Babies can face numerous challenges during their development cycle; they will have to overcome numerous fevers, allergies and infections. Some of these infections can be extremely contagious, one of which is ringworm. Treating these illnesses is one of the most important aspects of helping your child grow in a healthy and happy manner. Here's how you can identify them, treat them and prevent them.
What is Ringworm?
Ringworm is a type of fungal infection that can be extremely contagious. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with worms. The infection is called ringworm because of the shape of the contusion or bruise that manifests when your baby has this fungal infection. It is common to find ringworm infection in babies. This condition is not dangerous or extremely painful, but it can be extremely irritating and itchy. It is also known as tinea corporis and is most evident in children. This condition can manifest on any part of your child’s body from the scalp to the toes.
How Common is Ringworm in Young Children?
Ringworm is a very common infection that manifests in school children; this disease is extremely rare in toddlers or infants. The most common age range for children affected by ringworm is 2 to 10 years.
What Causes Ringworm in Babies
Ringworm in children and babies can be caused by a variety of factors that include:
1. Pets
If your child has any kind of interaction with pets such as cats and dogs that have the infection, it can spread to your child.
2. Surfaces
If your baby has contact with the infection lingering on a surface, he is considered at risk for ringworm.
3. People
Ringworm is contagious. Your baby or child can get ringworm if he comes in contact with others that have the disease as well.
Note: Ringworm spreads through touch, if your child has ringworm, please keep them quarantined during their treatment period, so other children do not get sick as well.
Symptoms of Ringworm in Babies
One of the most important parts of fighting against any infection is understanding and identifying the infection. To do this, we must first learn about the symptoms of that infection. To understand ringworm, it is crucial that we know what the symptoms are and how they manifest.
Ringworm begins manifesting as either a single rash or many rashes that are red and scaly.
Hair loss is a common symptom of ringworm; this condition can often be mistaken for cradle cap or dandruff due to the manner of hair breakage.
Red patches on the face can mimic the symptoms of eczema, but could be a symptom of ringworm.
The patches can be extremely itchy, especially in children suffering from ringworm.
The growth of the patches in a ring-like shape, and rapid increase in the number of such patches is a typical characteristic of ringworm.
These patches on the skin can grow between a half-inch to an inch in a circular shape with slightly raised borders and a clear area in the centre. This type of patch indicates ringworm.
Diagnosis of Ringworm
Ringworm is known to manifest through an extremely distinct wound or patch on the skin; this allows doctors to make the diagnosis through a physical examination and by taking a medical history. If there are still doubts about the diagnosis, the doctor can take shavings of skin from the affected area and examine it under a microscope.
Complications
If left untreated, ringworm can lead to the following complications.
Leaving ringworm untreated can weaken your child’s immune system to a large extent, leaving your baby susceptible to further infections and diseases. If your child has ringworm, consult your primary care physician immediately and implement the recommended treatment plan.
An additional infection could leave your young one weak; they may need to go on an extended course of antibiotics.
Ringworm can also cause some minor scarring, ringworm on the scalp can cause hair loss along with the scarring.
Treatment of Ringworm in Babies
Depending on the severity of the infection, doctors can recommend the following treatment for ringworm in children:
1. Creams
One of the most common ways to treat this condition is by applying ringworm cream for babies. This type of cream is specifically made with the skin requirements of children in mind.
2. Shampoos
A simple way to treat ringworm would be by using a children’s antifungal shampoo while bathing your baby to ensure ringworms on the scalp are treated effectively.
3. Soaps
Similar to shampoos, using antifungal soaps on your child while giving him a bath can help combat this fungal infection.
4. Ointments
Using anti-fungal ointments can help ease irritation in your child while combating the infection itself.
5. Antibiotics
If the ringworm is severe and on multiple parts of your body and is also accompanied by another infection, your child may need to go on a course of antibiotics.
Remember that ringworm medicine for babies is prescribed on a case-specific basis. Do not share the medication with others or use them on other children even if they have the same condition. Before applying any of these treatments, talk to your doctor about the procedures for applying the medication and what has to be kept in mind and what to look out for.

How to Prevent Infants From Getting Ringworm?
There are some steps that you can take to ensure that your baby does not get a ringworm infection.
If you have pets in the house, make sure that they get their shots regularly and that you brush their fur from time to time.
Keep your infant’s nails trimmed as the infection can spread because of long, overgrown nails.
Change your child’s brush and comb every two months.
Change and wash your child’s bed sheets and pillowcases regularly. While washing, let the cloth soak in hot water for a few minutes.
Be sure to wash your child’s clothes at home and do not give it to the dhobi. Ringworms are notorious for being spread through contact with infected clothes.
Though the ringworm infection is highly contagious, you can exercise certain precautions to ensure that your child remains comfortable. Making sure that the infection does not spread to other members of the family or to other children is important. Talk to your child’s doctor about any concerns you may have regarding the infection.

How to Get Your Children to Say a Sincere Sorry Without Force
Ever since I became a mother, I noticed a common behaviour in children. Whenever they were asked or rather "forced" to say 'Sorry', they just kept mum. They just wouldn't say sorry, or even if they did, it would just be an insincere one. And I wondered, how could children at such a young age refuse to apologise? Then after much analysing, I understood that sorry was always associated with force or humiliating a child. And that's how children start associating this important word "sorry" with something that lets them down or humiliates them. And that's exactly not what the word is meant to do. But, parents' or caregivers' actions tend to associate a negative feeling with saying sorry.
Sorry should be made to feel like a nice and respectful word, only then children will say it. Don't humiliate or force a child to say sorry. If your child does not say sorry after doing something wrong do not say he is bad. Rather explain to him what he did, how it affected the other person and how would he feel if someone did the same to him. Doing this helps in improving their understanding of their mistakes and its consequences and they are then truly apologetic. It is much better than force which would have yielded just a fake sorry.
Yesterday, my son threw his father's new sunglasses. I explained to him why he shouldn't be throwing things, things can break if he throws them, some things are really expensive and this kind of behaviour makes the other person sad. I gave him an example of how would he feel if his Captain America toy was thrown by Papa and it broke. It took me 15 mins to explain all this. And in the end, he held his ears and said "I'm sorry Papa, I will not do it again." He went and hugged him. That was the best sorry I ever heard!!
When children are in an angry state of mind, they don't respond to force and anger, calm them down and then provide an explanation of their behaviour. All you need to do is model the right behaviour, tell them about consequences and feelings, provide examples, and give them time to understand and respond.
Sorry is a good word!!

Experts Say - THIS is Why Your 8-hour-sleep is Doing You More Harm Than Good & How to Correct It!
The position we sleep in has a lot to do with our overall health and well-being. Whether you sleep on your back, or your stomach, or your side, each has its pros and cons. Discover how sleeping positions and health are related.
Snooze time may be your favourite time of the day or night, but are you sleeping right? That can be answered with how you feel when you wake up in the morning; fresh, happy, and ready to take on the world - OR - moody, cranky, and feeling like you’ve aged overnight with aches and pains in places you didn’t expect! The time that’s supposed to rejuvenate you may be adversely affecting your health because of one seemingly insignificant thing - an incorrect sleeping position!
How Does Your Sleeping Position Affect Your Health?
There are a number of different sleeping positions that can all be categorised into 3 broad groups. And as it happens, each position has an effect on your health. Learn how different sleeping positions can affect your health, and make the right choice even as you slip into slumber. Each has their own pros and cons, so read on to figure out what’s right for you!
1. Flat on your back
Pros
Sleeping on your back is the best position for preventing neck and back pain because your back remains straight. Same goes for any shoulder issues too.
It keeps all your internal organs aligned and balances your body weight.
One of the best sleeping positions for your digestive system too, sleeping on your back helps decrease your chances of acid reflux, especially if you keep your head a little elevated.
For colds and nasal congestion, sleeping on your back is the best way to relieve yourself - especially arranging your pillow length-wise, so that your entire back is supported and your head is also elevated.
For those who consider their ‘beauty sleep’ important, sleeping on your back is recommended for cosmetic advantage. This is because it causes fewer wrinkles since your face is not pressed against pillows or your hands.
Cons
For those who suffer from snoring (which results in their co-sleepers’ suffering too, for that matter) or sleep apnea, sleeping on your back will result in those glorious sounds that can leave you with heavy or interrupted sleep, and your partner glaring at you groggily all night long.
2. On your tummy
Pros
Sleeping on the stomach can help snorers.
Yup, that’s pretty much it. Sleeping on your stomach is not seen as a healthy option at all; in fact, it has more cons than pros, which are...
Cons
Don’t be totally fooled by the fact that sleeping on your tummy provides temporary relief to people who suffer from lower back pain, because it eases pressure on discs. The keyword here is ‘temporary’. In the long run, this position can adversely affect your spine, because it’s hardly in a neutral position.
It also puts a lot of pressure on your muscles and joints, leading to those tingling aches and pains that make you wonder why you’re not rested after your textbook-recommended 8 hours of sleep.
Sleeping on your stomach can also hurt your neck as your head has to be turned towards one side, maybe even for hours on end. Waking up to a sharp and persistent pinch is really not something you want! So, unless you intend napping for just a few minutes, try not to sleep on your tummy.
If you absolutely must sleep on your tummy, the best thing to do is lie face down, but with your forehead propped up on a pillow so that you can breathe! This ensures that your neck isn’t strained for hours and hours on end.
3. Sideways
Sleeping on your side is generally the best sleep position in many people’s opinion, which is why it’s the most common. Well, one type is, at least, and that’s the fetal position, which is when you curl up all comfortably with your knees bent and upper body hunched up. The other is when you lie on your side with your torso and legs straight.
Pros
Doctors often recommend sleeping on the left side during pregnancy because it improves circulation to the heart. It puts less pressure on the lower back too.
This sleeping position affects your health positively by reducing snoring, heartburn and acid reflux as well.
It keeps the spine elongated and puts less pressure on the lower back.
Sleeping sideways also helps to reduce snoring, because the airways are open.
Cons
Sleeping on the side can put pressure on the stomach and lungs because the stress is on one side for a while. For this, keep alternating sides so that one side doesn’t bear all the brunt - the very common can’t-feel-my-arm-when-I-wake-up syndrome being the first sign of trouble.
Shoulder pain is another common thing you’ll notice while sleeping on the side.
Cosmetically, this doesn’t do your face much good because half of it is pressed against a pillow, leading to the formation of wrinkles.
To make sleeping on the side more comfortable, switch sides often; it prevents blood circulation from getting restricted, and helps reduce the strain on the limbs on that side. If you’re curled up in the fetal position, tuck a pillow in between your legs to relieve the strain on your hips.
So, which sleep style is healthiest? Is it on your back or on your side? The fact is, it’s difficult to know how you sleep at night since you’re unconscious! The best solution is to try and sleep in the position you think is the most suitable and comfortable for you. Experiment with different ways to see what the healthiest sleeping position is for you. Unless medically recommended, you don’t have to alter your sleep position much. Just take care of key factors such as the way your back and neck are placed, especially if you’re pregnant.
But if you see a marked change in the way you feel when you wake up, you may be doing something right! Read more

Contribution – First Parenthood is a thrilling experience as no-one could imagine it.
Parenthood is not a word, itself is an institution of its own unique kind. It can’t be defined in a word or in a few sentences. It is as larger as this universe. I dare to write something, a little bit of, about my first parenthood and it’s experiences. I am a Father of a 16 months old baby boy. We delighted to have our little one after almost 11 years of our marriage. That’s a different topic out of this story. Initial first two months for upbringing our little baby, we faced lots of difficulties. Cause we were alone at our home, both we and our little baby only. Our parents are staying at some other place by their livelihood but it’s not that they were missing all d time. Since my wife’s pregnancy until delivery, they cared, helped and delivering all possible deeds, as other does.i had to look after my work as well as for my baby. Most of d time my wife alone had played d sole responsibility towards our little loved one. But a nightmare came in our life when our baby aged between 3 to 4 months only. He developed a rare skin disease.Red spot and rashes occurred all over his body. We shivered and traumatised to see our dear one suffered and cried.it was so heart broken to see our little baby cried badly in panic when itchiness and bitchiness played in his body. He was not able to sleep properly at night and even we awakened whole of d night to look after our baby. We ran from doctor to doctor but no result came.even we performed some rituals for our piece and for our baby’s recovery. we got almost shattered at that time. No hope of ray coming at anyway. Our little baby faced and fight back against this bad disease at his own little little developing mind.He is a real fighter. He proved it. Suddenly a miracle happened. God exists. A doctor or God comes our way and under his brilliant diagnosis and medication, our child recovered gradually.Really, just I can say only, that doctor saved our baby and above all, “blessing from God”. Now our little one becomes a child in front of our eyes, living and playing happily. We have been learned a lesson from that trauma that parenthood is not as easy as it looks from outside. It is a commitment itself. Nothing can compare with d parenthood at any cost. It is very beautiful and wonderful. No matter comes, when child first comes. We parents go to any stage, whatever be d situation, when matter comes about d life of our child. Childhood, Adulthood, Parenthood and Oldhood are four pillars of everybody’s life. Noone can escape from it. Even animals played their role in upbringing of their siblings. We are now living in a place of fast development, rapid changing of climate, polluted air, water or everything, fast pace of livinghood, super competition in all, but above all, under all circumstances, we have to do best for our little child in health, sports, cultural activities, education, carrier, jobs, business, wedding untill end, in all aspects. Then we can proudly announce that our parenthood becomes successful. “When there is a will, there is a way”. This famous saying fitted well in our case where we lost all d ray of hope for our little one. Don’t loose, do fight, fight and fight back as our little angel did at a little age, we,,not… actually our brave boy won d battle. We won at last. Our parenthood won.
