Teaching Kids To Measure Length, Breadth and Height
Children generally develop the basic concepts of measurement by comparing objects with each other. They need to play and experiment with a variety of things before they can move to using formal units such as inches or yards when describing or measuring quantity.
Learning to measure is an important and practical skill that’s frequently put to use in real life activities such as when buying groceries or painting a house. Teaching your child basic measurement concepts doesn’t have to revolve around solving problems on paper or math textbooks. Kids, by nature, are great observers and learn more by doing rather than listening or reading and this holds true for measurement skills than almost anything else.
Teaching Measuring and Comparing to Preschoolers
Through Fun, Everyday Activities
Talk about who is ‘taller' and ‘shorter' when comparing the height of family members.
Spread out a sheet of newspaper on the floor. Count how many books will fit on top of it.
Ask your child to build a tall tower up to about 2 feet in height by stacking up blocks.
Talk about the size of a tablecloth or bed-cover needed to cover a table or the bed.
Recording your child's growth on a height chart is a measurement activity for children that always gets them excited.
Roll out two ‘ropes' of different lengths using play dough. Tell him about one rope being shorter and the other longer.
Trace your child's hand or foot on a piece of paper and cut it out. Use it to measure the length of things such as a table or the bed.
Walk around objects and talk about how many steps it takes.
Use a stick to measure distances between seedlings when planting in the garden.
Another lesson in measurement for kids can be to point out the distance your car has travelled.
Through Visuals for Better Understanding
Children learn when they play. Being visual learners, they grasp concepts about shapes, colours and sizes all while playing with different objects. Measurement games for kids help them learn about length, breadth, height and area through playing with things such as play dough, blocks, ribbons and even scale model toys. While playing, they observe things like the size and shape of objects, how cubes can be stacked up while round objects can be rolled, how things fit together, and how one object is longer than the other.
Through Practice
Once your child is able to understand the concept of size and measurements, he can then be introduced to ways to measure things using different tools, whether it’s a ruler or a tape or something else. Then comes teaching the units of measurement to kids. He’ll learn how to express quantity in certain units of measurement like inches or centimeters and not just a general ‘big’ and ‘small’.
Kids need to be encouraged to learn such mathematical concepts through activities that teach measurement. By encouraging them to explore and manipulate objects, they gain the practical experience required to cement their understanding. Read more

Everything You Need to Know to Survive Karva Chauth Fast
Karva Chauth, the day-long fast observed by many married women in North India, falls on October 8 this year. The Karva Chauth fast is observed for the longevity and good health of husbands and is a tough one indeed! This is one festival that needs true determination as women do not even drink water the entire day. Sounds difficult? Well, we make it possible!
You have probably planned for the mehandi, your outfit and the home decorations. While you may have decided on all the clothes, jewellery and niceties for the day, have you also given a thought on how to keep Karva Chauth fast satisfactorily and not make it a painful experience? Here’s our quick low down on how to open Karva Chauth fast and how to break it.
Preparing for the Fast
While fasting, a lot of toxins are released from your body during its ‘break time’. Hence it is important that you stay prepared for the fast a few days before the festival. So, what to eat before your Karva Chauth fast? Include a lot of fruits and nuts in your diet so your body begins its cleansing process early on and doesn’t get a shock on the fast day.
For the sargi, here are a list of foods that you can include
Milk
Fibre rich foods (fruits like apples, bananas etc.)
Protein rich foods (sprouts, paneer, etc.)
Nuts (especially almonds and walnuts)
Whole-wheat and multigrain foods (bread, cereals, rotis, etc.)
Remember to avoid sugary foods as they would only make you feel hungrier during the day.
During the Fast
For women who are used to light snacking throughout the day, or if you are pregnant, ensure to snack on fresh fruits and nuts. Pregnant women are advised to not to stick to the Karva Chauth fast rules as your baby’s health could be adversely affected. Keep yourself busy during your fast and divert your attention so you don’t end up dreaming about delicious food! Watch movies, or make all those calls you’ve been putting off for a long time now. Do little tasks around the house but do not engage in energy consuming activities.
Fruits you can have during Karva Chauth Fast include: apples, watermelons, and cucumbers.
How to Break Karva Chauth Fast
If you are thinking what to have after your Karva Chauth fast, say hello fruits!
End your fast by easing into a nice fresh bowl of fruits or fruit juice. Lot of women recommend bananas to break Karva Chauth fast.
Drink lots of water, but don't gulp it down! Sip on a glass of water, waiting for a few seconds between sips. After your first glass, wait for 5 minutes, then have your next glass. Then drink up!
Drink buttermilk to soothe your tummy. You can even eat a bowl of curd or yoghurt.
Do not go for caffeinated drinks like tea or coffee as they spike up the acidity levels in your stomach and you could end up having a tough time. Also avoid oily food (paratha, puri, etc.) and rice and keep it fresh and light.
Pro-Tips To Survive Karva Chauth
As difficult as Karva Chauth may seem, it is all a matter of training the mind. Soldiers on our borders go for months without proper rest, good sleeping conditions, and still survive. They are no different from us! The difference is not in the bodies but in the mind. Here's how you can not just survive, but ace Karva Chauth like a boss-bahu!
Start preparing for Karva Chauth 2 to 3 weeks in advance.
Get into the habit of eating light. This includes portion control as well as limiting the number of meals a day.
Include fruits in your daily diet.
Remember how when we were kids we would forget about hunger and thirst if we were doing something we loved doing? Try and find activities you like to engage in, and make them a part of your routine. Use these to train your mind and take it off hunger and food.
Try to change your approach to Karva Chauth: it is not just a fast but a 'detox' for your body. The realisation that the fast is actually helping instead of simply torturing you will give you renewed strength and allow you to remain focused.
Pamper yourself! Book a spa date with your girl-friends, go for a movie... be amongst other women who are also fasting. Give and get moral support and strength.
The Karva Chauth procedure is very close to a woman’s heart as it is a symbol of love and dedication. If you are celebrating the festival, follow these tips to make your Karva Chauth fast a smooth one. Let the moon light up your life and renew the beautiful bond you share with your husband! Read more

Soy Allergy in Babies - Symptoms, Management and Safety Tips
For breastfeeding infants, soy allergy may not be immediately evident off the bat. As a child starts trying out different food items, any allergies that might exist begin to surface and can be diagnosed effectively. Giving soy to a child is definitely recommended since it provides a huge nutritional serving, but soy allergy is also a condition that one needs to be aware of.
Is Soy Safe as a Baby Food?
Before giving soy to your baby, it is important to understand whether it is safe to do so.
Derived from soybeans, soy contains numerous nutrients that are good for the child.
Giving soy milk to a lactose intolerant child is a great substitution.
Soy shouldn’t be given as a baby’s first food but can be introduced once he has other food items as well.
What Causes Soy Allergy in Babies?
Any allergy that a person suffers from is usually the reaction of the immune system of the body. The same condition exists for a soy allergy as well.
In this case, various proteins present in soy products may be misinterpreted by the body’s immune system as harmful substances. This causes a secretion of a specific kind of antibodies, called immunoglobulin E, or IgE. Therefore, any time when soy is ingested, these proteins are detected by the antibodies and the immune system reacts by sounding the danger alarm and releasing a flood of histamines in the bloodstream to combat the substances. These chemicals are the reason for allergic symptoms being visible in various forms, right from skin rashes to breathing problems, and many more.
At times, a food allergy can be delayed as well and trigger only when the allergen enters the intestine or the colon. The reaction, in this case, is not immediate but occurs after a few hours, and majorly results in stomach ache, diarrhoea and similar symptoms.
Symptoms of Soy Allergy in Infants
The signs of soy allergy in a baby are pretty evident. These need to be observed as early as possible in life so that the allergic condition can be diagnosed properly. Most of the symptoms are:
Eyes swell and start itching and watering
Reduction in blood pressure
A feeling of being lightheaded
Seeing red coloured spots
A repeated occurrence of wheezing
The existence of an oral allergy syndrome
Repeated vomiting
An anaphylactic attack
Various issues of the gastric system
The appearance of rhinitis due to the allergy
An onset of asthma
Presence of hives all over the body
Dizziness and a feeling of nausea
How to Manage Allergy Reactions
Making use of a special formula for babies with milk and soy allergies can help avoid any untoward incidents. However, if your child does face a severe reaction, it needs to be managed effectively without panicking.
It is always better to keep common anti-allergic medicines such as antihistamines or others to control any allergic attack.
Talk to a doctor to get epinephrine and understand the right way to use it.
Epinephrine injections are also available in a compact form that can be carried anywhere or even given in your child’s backpack.
At times, using an auto-injecting epinephrine might be necessary to be used by other caretakers who may not be aware of the proper techniques to handle allergies.
What to Do if Baby Attends a Nursery
For children that suffer from an allergy and spend their time at a nursery, extra care needs to be taken by informing the staff about the allergy as well as providing a plan of action in case your baby has a reaction.
Provide them with an emergency number to call upon should they spot any signs of a reaction.
Give them your own contact number or alternate numbers of other family members to reach out to immediately.
Keep an epinephrine injection with your child or the nursery and ask the staff to use it, if the child starts showing signs of swelling or breathing difficulties.
Safety Guidelines for When Your Baby is Diagnosed With Soy Allergy
When your baby is diagnosed with an allergy towards soy, there are ways to manage the reactions should they occur. However, prevention is a better alternative any time and there are a few guidelines you can adhere to, in order to keep your little one safe from certain foods.
When purchasing food items from the supermarket, check the label for the ingredients. Avoid items that mention any soy derivative on it.
Certain cuisines such as Asian foods make use of soy products liberally. Be extra careful when opting to go ahead with one.
Many bakeries have started using soy in mixtures of cakes, chips and even roasted nuts. Double check for any presence as such.
Keep away from sprouted soybean as well.
Some spice collections that contain mixed elements do have the possibility of including soy as well.
Be careful when choosing any kind of vegetable stock or canned food products like soup and others. They might contain soy in the ingredients.
Certain variants of margarine make use of a soy oil in their preparation.
Multiple dips, sauces, spreads, dressings for salads also make use of soy to accentuate their flavour.
Nowadays, there are varieties of biscuits, bread, and other desserts that use soy in their preparation, too.
Check with fast food joints and inquire if they make use of soy in any of their preservatives or cooking techniques, as well as items such as flour or cheese.
Figuring out any kind of dairy and soy intolerance in babies can be a messy affair because such conditions can be diagnosed only when they occur for the first time. Once the diagnosis is attained, it is quite easy to prevent any reactions from occurring again, as well as keep a contingency plan in place to treat its emergence.

Celebrating Menstruation? Yes, at the June Ambubachi Mela, Assam
As if surviving the discomfort of your monthly period wasn't hard enough, society throws in your face a number of taboos. This is why you might be surprised to know that the Ambubachi Mela, Assam celebrates the yearly menstrual cycle of Goddess Kamakhya with great fervour! As many as 10 lakh pilgrims are expected this year at the Mela from June 22 to 26.
The Ambubachi Mela is organised at the famous Kamakhya Temple which is said to be the ‘birthplace of Earth’. Goddess Kamakhya is considered to be the embodiment of desire and fertility, her temple frequented by pilgrims all through the year. In fact, it is also one of the oldest “shakti peethas” or religious sites in India. What's intriguing is that in a country where many still shy away from the subject of menstruation and consider women “unclean” during their monthly cycle, this festival almost seems an aberration.
5 Fascinating Facts About Ambubachi Mela, Assam
The menstrual cycle of the Goddess is said to last three days. These are the days when the temple remains closed to visitors and devotees refrain from worshipping. The four-day Mela commences after the yearly menstruation is deemed to be over.
You'll see an overdose of the colour red at the Ambubachi Mela. Symbolic of the menstrual blood the Goddess has shed, devotees figuratively paint the town red and chant “Mother Earth is menstruating”.
Guess what you get for prasad? Small bits of red cloth said to be moist with the menstrual fluid of Goddess Kamakhya! This is considered highly auspicious and is sought after by the hordes of devotees queuing up at the temple.
The Mela is held annually during the monsoons for a reason. “Ambubachi” in Sanskrit means “issuing forth of water or ambu”. It is believed that the nurturing power of Mother Earth's menses will improve the fertility of land. This ties in with the onset of monsoon in the region.
The Mela is considered the perfect time for “tantrik” cults who endeavour to gain powers by observing tough penances to please the Goddess. Sadhus and tantriks flock in from countries across the globe!
Fascinating? Ambubachi Mela can be an offbeat but inspiring getaway for you this June. The temple is situated close to Guwahati city in Assam – accessible by air as well train. Also, the state government ensures a smooth transport and stay arrangement so devotees can make the most of their time. Go ahead and experience the Ambubachi mood that celebrates an often silenced aspect of womanhood! Read more
