With a new baby, there is always a time of firsts. You will remember the first time your baby tried to sit, the first time he ate an entire meal on his own, and the time he stood up and walked with the support of course. But as your baby’s first birthday is approaching, you will probably be curious about what to look for so that you don’t miss any of those much awaited and much treasured moments in your lives.

Achieved Milestones
Emerging Milestones
He would be able to walk around the room while using support from your hand.
Might let go of your hand and walk independently. In some cases, you might find him trying to scale the furniture.
He should be able to use his fingers to put block toys together.
His usage of fingers would only get better and would start performing complex functions like eating with a spoon.
He will have moved on to solid foods such as fruits, meat and dairy products.
He will soon develop his own taste and preferences. This means he may not always eat what is offered to him.
He will be able to speak certain words like Yes and No.
He is yet to master speech and over time will be able to give coherent replies to your questions.

What Milestones Baby Should Reach by 11 Months of Age?
The development of a baby can be categorised into three main sections: physical development, motor skills, cognitive development, and social and emotional development. Babies at this age grow fast and learn even faster. They are now determined to become more independent and will even begin to experiment a lot more since they are now able to move around by themselves to a certain extent.
Physical and Motor Skills
Here we will look at how an 11-month-old develop physical and motor skills:
Your baby begins to learn to change his position in order to be able to reach things better.
Your baby may seem wobbly at first but now is when your baby will have learnt to stand without any support.
“Cruising” is the term that is used to refer to a baby learning to walk by using other objects for support.
Babies of this age will not make much progress when it comes to climbing all the stairs, but they will manage to scale a few given enough time.
At this point, your baby has developed better motor and muscle capacity and now has a better grip on objects.
Cognitive Development
Here are the cognitive developments your child should have made by 11 months:
At this age, babies are beginning to learn the names of the people and objects they interact with on a regular basis.
Babies are developing their spatial skills at this point. This is where they learn to observe the shapes and sizes of objects and then manipulate them.
Your little one begins to understand how to use his cup, lifting it to his mouth to drink. He may also start to lift the comb directly to his head if he sees it. He is learning how things work.
Your baby will now be able to communicate his disapproval towards certain things like if he is not enjoying a meal, he will show it by shaking his head in order to say “No".
Social and Emotional Development
Here are the milestones to look out for in your child related to his social and emotional development:
Your baby now exclusively knows who mama is and who dada is and will even know whom he needs depending on the situation.
If put in a situation where a baby has to interact with a lot of people, he will naturally go freely to the people he knows, often giving them warm smiles. With people he doesn’t know, he may show nervousness and unwillingness to leave the familiar person he is with.
Your baby will now display a wide range of emotions. He knows how to express his displeasure, throwing a tantrum when he does not like the situation he is in or the outcome of an action, like taking away his toys to put him to bed.
Babies of this age will usually engage in parallel play; this is when they play alongside but not with another child.
Communication Skills
Here are some communication skills your baby is developing at this age:
Your baby will learn to indicate his wants through his actions.
At this age, babies may show an interest in a two-way conversation.
Your baby can now follow a number of actions and may even try imitating some expressions and words from you and your partner.
Your baby can now follow simple requests such as “Could you please give me that block?”
Eating Milestones
Some eating milestones that your baby will reach this age are:
Your baby will start feeding himself with his fingers and will also start to experiment with a spoon.
By this time, his sense of taste will start developing.
He may begin eating a more varied diet of pureed or mashed solid foods.
Some fussy eaters may not want to eat new food that is offered to them. Try offering it to them at least eight to twelve times before they get used to it.
When to be Worried
Here are some things to watch for during your baby’s development:
At this age, babies should be able to stand and at least attempt their first steps. So if your baby still hasn’t begun to crawl at all, you may want to visit your doctor.
Babies are fast learners, and if you help them out at this age, they will eventually get the hang of standing. However, if you notice that your child’s legs look loose and shaky when he stands or is not able to stand even with support, consult your doctor.
Babies by this age start babbling and try to imitate what you say. If your baby does not utter a single word, then you may need to get your baby checked by a doctor.
If you call out to your baby from behind a closed door, your baby will immediately turn towards the sound of your voice, even if he cannot see you, and since he knows you are there, he will keep looking at it. This requires all the baby’s senses to be working in harmony. If your baby seems confused, his sensory functioning may be poor, which is a bad sign.
Ways to Help Your Child Reach the Milestones
Help your baby reach his 11-month-old baby development milestones with a few simple steps:
Play with him in a way that enables him to practice and develop his new skills and take him to a park to socialise.
Help your baby be independent by allowing him to comb his own hair if he likes to, or by letting him feed himself.
Read to your baby with the help of simple storybooks with colourful pictures. Your baby may try to say the name of a familiar picture you point to in his books. This helps in developing memory and speech.
Your little one can link words and actions by now, and it is important to start to cut baby talk out of your conversations. This will help to improve and grow your baby’s basic vocabulary.
Always remember that each baby will reach these milestones at the rate they are comfortable in. As long as it doesn’t match up to any of the signs to be worried about, all you need to do is keep going for your regular doctor’s appointments and help your baby out through your simple everyday activities.

How Can Parents Promote Gender Equality At Home
Gender equality is an often discussed topic, but you must have noticed that the discussion never has a reasonable conclusion. Little things, little remarks that people make in their daily life show how enormous this problem is. ‘Why are you crying like a girl?' is an oft-repeated remark when a little boy weeps. When a child is born, people decide different roles for boys and girls. Toys such as dolls and kitchen equipment will always be for girls and guns and cars for boys. As a parent, promoting gender equality at home starts with you.
As the first teachers of your kids, you can instil values in them that will last forever. As a parent, you have to let your children know that a boy and girl should be treated with equal respect.
From a very young age, children ask questions about the physical differences between a boy and girl, which may make you feel awkward to answer and you may ignore them. However, you must make them understand and explain them in the best possible way. You can tell them that no two people are the same. Some are tall; some are short, some dark while some fair. You should teach them that the physical differences between people or of a man and woman are because of nature, but that doesn't mean they should be treated differently. Everyone should get equal rights, equal opportunities, and fair treatment. Your child must understand that except for the physical difference, there should be no other difference in the upbringing of two children. They must be made to realise that nature may have made them physically different, but their nurturing will be the same.
Why Is It Important to Teach Kids About Gender Equality?
You can't teach kids about gender equality only once in life and expect them to remember it for a lifetime. It should be an ongoing process - a part of their daily upbringing. Not bringing up your son and daughter equally can have disastrous implications. Boys who are brought up as the privileged ones or are given more opportunities, freedom, grow up with a mindset that they are superior to their sisters and to women in general. If a boy while growing up notices that his mother or sister is always working in the kitchen, he may think that it is the job of a woman. Disrespecting and disregarding women may become something normal for a boy grown up with this mentality. Domestic violence, eve-teasing, are the fallouts of this mindset.
Sometimes, girls also start accepting gender-defined roles. They may grow up with low self-confidence, low self-esteem, and look up to the males in their family for protection. However, in this age, women should be free, and they should be able to do what they want to do with their lives. If you want your kids to grow up to be confident and kind, you must treat them equally. Tell your son when he does something wrong and then do the same for your daughter too.
How to Educate Children About Gender Equality
Teaching gender equality to kids does not require any special preparation or atmosphere. Let your children learn by observation. Some ways of how you can teach gender equality to your kids are as follows:
1. Be An Example
Display the kind of behaviour you expect from your children. As a husband and wife, you must speak to each other with respect, share the household chores, and handle other tasks together. Let your kids notice that you work together as a team. Let them see that it is not a woman's duty to cook dinner for everyone in the family or a man's responsibility to buy groceries from the shop. When your kids notice this, it will reflect in their behaviour too. So, set a good example.
2. Both are Special
Don’t show preferential behaviour towards either of your kids or be harsh on boys and soft on girls or vice versa. Some parents treat the girls as if they are made of porcelain. They are already making them feel that they are weak and need to be protected all the time. These parents, in turn, are harsh on the boys. If you don't tolerate the bad behaviour of the son, don't condone the bad behaviour of the daughter either. Reprimand them or appreciate them in the same way for their bad or good behaviour.
3. All Household Chores are Equal
Let the children help in the household work as per their age, equally, irrespective of the gender. Let them share the workload with you, whether it is washing cars, washing dishes in the kitchen, chopping vegetables, hanging the washed clothes, going out to buy household things etc. Both should be given every kind of work without earmarking them as the girlie work and the manly work.
4. Watch Your Language and Theirs
Don’t use abusive language in front of them, especially that which disparages and belittles a female. Stop them from using swear words. Generally, the parents, especially the father, overlooks the bad language of the son. The son must be made to understand that it’s not cool and manly to swear and curse.
5. A Successful Daughter is Not a Replacement for a Son
The girl has her own place as a daughter. The typical refrain parents use for a successful daughter with many achievements is, “ She is not my daughter, she is my son.” Why? By saying so, you are negating her efforts and indirectly telling her that sons are better than daughters.
6. Teach Both of Them To Be Self Dependent
Teach them both the life skills to survive when alone such as, cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing and mending clothes, small repair work in and around the house.
7. Encourage them to do What They Want
If a daughter wants to play football, let her and, if the son wants to join cookery or dance classes, permit him.
8. Set the Same Curfew Time for Both
The time for both to return home after the evening should be the same. Do not extend the time for your son.
9. Equal Division of Property for Both
Let them know that both are equal inheritors of the parental property.
10. Family Bonding Time
Have discussions on common issues and pay heed to both equally. Watch with them movies that are soft with mainly female characters and, the ones considered for boys only. Allow both to cry while watching.
If gender equality is practised at home, the world will be a much better place to live in, especially for women.

5 Month Sleep Regression – Causes and Signs You Should Know
Parenting is a beautiful journey, filled with many joys and new experiences. However, it also comes with its fair share of challenges, one of which is dealing with a baby’s sleep pattern changes. One particular phase that can be difficult for many parents to handle is the “five month sleep regression”. This term might seem alarming, especially if you’re a new parent, but understanding what it is and how to navigate it can significantly ease your worries.
What Is The 5 Month Sleep Regression?
Sleep regression refers to a period when a baby who has been sleeping well suddenly starts waking up frequently during the night and has shorter naps during the day. The “5 month old sleep regression” specifically refers to this phase when it happens around the baby’s fifth month. Babies go through several sleep regressions in the first two years of their life. While each baby is unique and may not follow a strict timeline, the most common sleep regression periods occur around 4 months, 8-10 months, and 18 months to 2 years of age.
Can Sleep Regression Happen At 5 Month?
Yes, sleep regression can happen at five months, although it’s important to note that not all babies will experience it. Some may go through this phase earlier, at three or four months, while others might experience it later. However, the five-month mark is often a time of significant developmental changes for your baby. These changes can disrupt their previously established sleeping patterns, leading to what is referred to as “five month old sleep regression”.
What Are the Causes of 5 Month Sleep Regression?
Several factors can contribute to the occurrence of a 5 month sleep regression:
1. Physical Growth: Rapid growth and physical development can cause discomfort and disrupt a baby’s sleep. Teething, for instance, can start around this age and might cause sleep interruptions due to discomfort.
2. Developmental Milestones: At around five months, babies become more aware of their surroundings and start developing abilities like rolling over, sitting up, and maybe even starting to crawl. These exciting developmental leaps can cause them to wake more frequently.
3. Changes in Sleep Cycle: As babies grow, their sleep patterns begin to resemble those of adults. This means they start cycling between deep and light sleep. This can cause them to wake up more frequently, particularly if they haven’t yet learned how to self-soothe and fall back to sleep independently.
4. Separation Anxiety: Around this age, babies begin to understand object permanence – the concept that things still exist even when they’re out of sight. This can lead to separation anxiety, especially when they wake up and find you’re not there.
5. Changes in Routine or Environment: Any major changes in a baby’s routine or environment can also lead to disruptions in their sleep. This could be anything from travelling to starting daycare or moving to a new home.
Signs of 5 Month Sleep Regression
Identifying a sleep regression can be a bit tricky, as it can sometimes be confused with other issues like illness or teething. However, here are six signs you can look out for:
1. Frequent Night Waking: If your baby, who once slept soundly through the night, starts waking up frequently, it could be a sign of sleep regression.
2. Resisting Naptime: Difficulty falling asleep for naps, short naps, or skipping naps altogether are other signs.
3. Increased Fussiness: A baby undergoing sleep regression might be more irritable or fussy, especially during the times when they should be sleeping.
4. Changes in Appetite: Some babies might eat more due to increased periods of wakefulness. Others might have descreased appetite.
5. Clinginess: Due to potential separation anxiety, babies might become more clingy during a sleep regression.
6. Practicing New Skills: If your baby is using their wake time to practice new skills like rolling over or sitting up, they’re likely experiencing a sleep regression.
How Long Does 5 Month Sleep Regression Last?
The duration of a sleep regression can vary greatly from one baby to another. Typically, sleep regression periods last between two to six weeks. Remember, this phase is a temporary one, although it may not feel like it when you’re in the midst of it!
How Can You Manage 5 Month Sleep Regression In Your Baby?
While sleep regression can be challenging, there are strategies you can use to help your baby through this phase:
1. Establish a Sleep Routine
A consistent bedtime routine can signal to your baby that it’s time to sleep. This routine can include activities such as bathing, reading a book, or singing lullabies.
2. Encourage Independent Sleeping
Gradually teach your baby to fall asleep on their own. This can help them self-soothe and go back to sleep if they wake up during the night.
3. Make the Environment Sleep-Friendly
Ensure the baby’s room is dark, quiet, and at a comfortable temperature. Using a white noise machine can also help promote better sleep.
4. Feed Your Baby Before Sleep
A full tummy can help your baby sleep longer stretches. However, avoid creating a sleep association where your baby needs to feed to fall asleep.
5. Offer Comfort
If your baby is experiencing separation anxiety, offer comfort but try to avoid creating new sleep associations or habits that you’ll have to break later.
6. Be Patient
Remember, this phase is temporary and part of your baby’s natural development. Be patient with your baby and yourself.
7. Take Care of Yourself
Parenting a baby going through sleep regression can be exhausting. Don’t forget to take care of your own needs and rest when you can.
8. Seek Professional Advice
If you’re struggling to manage your baby’s sleep regression, don’t hesitate to seek advice from a paediatrician or a sleep consultant.
When to Call A Doctor?
While the 5 month sleep regression is usually a normal part of a baby’s development, you should reach out to a healthcare professional if you notice any of the following:
Your baby is excessively irritable and nothing seems to soothe them.
There’s a drastic change in their feeding habits or weight.
Your baby has difficulty breathing, high fever, or shows signs of illness.
Sleep problems persist beyond six weeks or are causing significant distress.
FAQs
1. How Much Should 5 Month Old Baby Sleep?
At five months, a baby typically needs about 12 to 15 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period. This usually includes two to three daytime naps totalling three to four hours, with the rest of the sleep occurring during the night.
2. How I Can Get My 5 Month Old To Sleep Through The Night?
Establishing a consistent bedtime routine and encouraging independent sleeping can help your 5 month old sleep through the night. Additionally, making sure they’re getting enough to eat during the day and the room conditions are optimal for sleep can also help. Remember, every baby is different, and what works for one may not work for another. If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to seek professional advice.
In conclusion, while dealing with a five month old sleep regression can be a challenging time for parents, understanding its causes and signs, and knowing how to navigate through it, can make this phase more manageable. Remember, it’s a temporary stage in your baby’s development and a sign that they’re growing and learning new skills. With patience, consistency, and a few helpful strategies, both you and your baby will be able to get the rest you need.

Growing Together Love, Cherish and Share the Joy of Motherhood
Welcome back to Growing Together
In our previous post, we saw how we can take little care for ourselves before planning for a pregnancy. Today, the walk through will be basically FAQs for the ones who had witnessed the two pink lines and who are yet to witness the same. Congrats!
Key Audience – Confirm the Conception
Well, now that you are past your ovulation dates and you are eagerly waiting to skip your period, do not be in a haste to run to the medical shop to get a home pregnancy kit. ?
When Can I do a HPT?
You might have heard from your near and dear ones that you need to take the test a day or two as soon as you skip your period. True but it is not necessary to show a positive result for everyone who awaits conception.Though you are pregnant, sometimes you may not see the two pink lines when you do HPT after a day or two of missed period.
Why Dint you See?
The pregnancy will be detected by the presence of the pregnancy hormone HCG. (HCG has a complex expansion, so keeping it simple) If you do not see the two pink lines it doesn’t mean you are not pregnant, it just means your body need some ample time for the HCG to rise in order to get detected via the pregnancy test. Wait for few more days say around 7-10 and then repeat the test, definitely you will be on cloud nine.
I See a Fade Pink Line. What Does that Mean?
Ok. Do not worry, cheers. Atleast you are able to witness a fade pink line. So this also indicates the same, you need to wait for couple of days for the HCG to reach the level. The HCG amount present in your urine is minimal. When I did my HPT, yes of course I got a fade pink line, was confused if there was any problem with my pregnancy kit ?.
Waited for 4 more days and again repeated on 5th day. Was able to see the two clear pink lines.
Is There any Other Way to Confirm Pregnancy?
Yes. One way is to you can head straight to your doctor for a blood test if you are not patient enough to wait for the HCG to increase ? A blood test can confirm pregnancy even with low level of HCG.Yet another way is BBT is nothing but Basal Body Temperature which is the lowest temperature of your body when you are at rest. Hmm ok, this one going to be little tough and you need patience. First you need to get a clinical thermometer. Google says a BBT thermometer and even today I did not get something specific in the shop and not sure how it differs from a normal one ?
The thermometer I used is ‘Cipla’. It is a normal digital thermometer. It costs close to 200 bucks.
Ok lets see how should you take your BBT in order to confirm pregnancy.
How BBT Works?
If you are pregnant, the progesterone stays high due to which you will notice an increase in your body temperature. An increase doesn’t mean too high, it will be say 0.4 to 1 degree higher than your normal body temperature. Say if you have a normal body temperature of 97.5 then your BBT would be around 98 ( /-) if you are pregnant.
From When Should I Start Taking BBT?
Preferably from the day you start ovulating. Once you start ovulating, the progesterone increases, due to which the temperature of your body goes up. So until your next period, the risen temperature remains high. If no conception has taken place, the progesterone drops and hence the temperature drops just before your period. You might get your period in the next few days.
If you have skipped you period and the temperature remains high for couple of more days, it indicates that the progesterone still stays high and that you are conceived. Progesterone stays high throughout your pregnancy. I confirmed my pregnancy well with BBT itself before taking the HPT ?
Steps to Take BBT
Keep the thermometer close to your bed.
Everyday morning once you wake up, do not even get up and sit, do not put your feet on the floor, just place the thermometer under your tongue as you are in the lying position.
Note the temperature
Repeat 1, 2, 3 every morning the same time. If today you take it 5 am, tomorrow at 5 am, can be 5 or 10 mins here and there but should not be as 6 am or 7 am. Keep an alarm atleast and then take your temperature and get back to sleep ?
What is a False-Positive and False-Negative Result?
The pregnancy tests yield a positive, negative, invalid or it may be a false-positive or false-negative results.
Positive – You are pregnant
Negative – Not this time
Invalid – Test not taken correctly
False-positive – You may not be pregnant but still you may see two lines or a plus sign or whatever
False-negative – You may be pregnant but still you may not see the two lines
Once after you take HPT, you get a negative result and you doubt you still may be pregnant, thendo not hesitate, go to the doctor right away so as to avoid cases of false-positive or false-negative.
Pregnancy Test Kits
I used ‘Prega News’ and ‘Velocit’. Both were good. Prega News costs around 50 bucks and Velocit around 70 bucks.
Enjoy the little happy moments ladies until we meet next.
Happy Motherhood.
