Newborn Eye Discharge - Reasons and Solutions
It can be a scary moment for parents when they find their newborn having any physical ailments. Sometimes newborns experience eye discharge and it is common in many infants. Understanding why and how it occurs will ease some of the worries and help address it better.
What are the Causes of Eye Discharge in Newborn Babies?
There might be many reasons for eye discharge in infants, and it could be something as simple as a common cold. Hence, it is important to observe the various aspects of eye discharge in newborn babies. Find out what might be causing this in babies. The causes of eye discharge in newborns are listed below:
1. Eye Infection
A baby may have teary eye discharge or watery eyes, which is a sign of an eye infection. An infection may develop due to bacteria, fungi, or virus your baby may have come in contact with. It can even occur when the baby is moving through the birth canal and has come in contact with a bacterium from the mother. If your infant has redness or watery discharge and continues to rub his eyes frequently, it is a sign of an eye infection.
2. Blocked Tear Ducts
Around 10 percent of newborn babies have this condition called, blocked tear duct. In this condition a baby has persistent watery eyes and the water does not drain properly. This leads to water pooling in the eyes of a baby which later runs down the cheeks even if a baby is not crying. Some of the other symptoms of this are pus-like discharge or redness of the eyelids particularly in the nasal corner of the eye.
3. Foreign Particle in the Eye
It is common that some small particles of dust or dirt blown into the eyes of the babies. If these dust particles are not removed, it can lead to a baby teary eye discharge. Other signs to watch out for are constantly blinking and rubbing of the eyes to remove the particle.
4. Common Cold
Eye discharge in babies suffering from cold is also common and it is mainly due to blockage. As common cold is contagious, a baby might get it from his parents if they are sick. If a baby suffers from common cold, it can lead to a runny nose and watery eyes.
5. Bacterial Conjunctivitis
This is a highly contagious infection that an infant may have from you or your family members. Common symptoms of this are pus discharge and sticking of eyelids together. This can occur in one or both eyes.
How to Treat Infant Eye Discharge?
If you notice these symptoms mentioned above in your baby, you must not panic and take necessary steps to treat them. You can tackle these causes at home but consult a paediatrician if the conditions persist for long.
A few things that parents can do to control baby eye discharge are mentioned below:
1. Wipe Away any Discharge
If you notice persistent watery eyes in your baby, make sure you wipe away any discharge with a clean, soft sterilized cloth. If it is sticky, you can also use warm water with it. Use a soaked towel to gently wipe away any discharge from your child’s eyes.
2. Treating Blocked Tear Ducts
If your baby has a blocked tear duct, one of the ways you can help open them up is by gently massaging the inner lower corner of the baby’s eye also known as the lacrimal sac. You can even massage your baby's nose a couple of times.
3. Pink Eye or Conjunctivitis
If your baby shows symptoms of pink eye, which is caused by a virus or bacteria, talk to your paediatrician. He will prescribe an eye drop and administer it as instructed by your physician. Keep a keen eye on any signs for the next few days once you start the treatment.
4. Antiviral Treatment
To ensure that pink eye does not become a recurring issue in your infant, consult your doctor for some antiviral medication to address any underlying condition your child may have. Pink eye leads to eye discharge, so it is better to take preventing measures.
Your baby will not be able to express any discomfort they feel by using words, but there are observable signs when it comes to eye discharge. To keep your child happy, it is important to watch out for these and treat them immediately.

1. Pregnancy Jeans

2. Stretchy Leggings
If you have toned legs, you are in luck. One of the pregnancy clothing staples is a pair of cool black leggings. It makes your legs look shapely and also adds to your apparent height. Avoid white leggings as they do exactly the opposite of what you want—they make you look heavier. You can team leggings with a long shirt, tunic, cardigan or button down shirt.
3. Tunics
Maternity tunics lovingly embrace your belly as well as your love handles. They tend to stretch as your waistline increases.
4. Wrap Tees
Wrap tees or cross over tops are tied right below your bust. They give you structure and take the attention away from your baby bump. Wrap shirts can be adjusted according to your size.
5. Tee Shirts
Comfortable maternity tees are ideal for pregnancy due to their high comfort factor. Pick V-necks and deep round necks instead of high necks. Hiding your neck can make you look heavier.
6. Maxi Dress
An empire-waist maxi dress drapes perfectly well over your growing bump. It is a good investment as you can wear it throughout your pregnancy. Pick a dress that doesn't cling to your body but is instead smooth and flowing.
7. Skirts
Skirts which end just above the knees make you look taller. They come with an elastic band which provides additional support that your belly requires during this time. They offer you both freedom and femininity.
8. Stockings
A good pair of stockings will disguise your swollen feet and varicose veins. You can wear stockings with dresses or tunics. They are also a great way to add zing to your clothes. While you're at it, remember to pick loose and comfortable clothes as tightly-fitted clothes during pregnancy can cause heartburn, backache, sleeplessness and also restrict the growth of foetus. Stay Fashionably Forward With These 7 Winter Looks
Winter is one of those seasons that raises a lot of special requirements, for a very limited period – especially when it comes to fashion. You can’t possibly wear winter clothes at any other time of the year. But buy them, you must! How else are you going to survive the cold?
However, wanting to feel warm and cosy is no excuse for you to dress up shabbily! Fashion need not take a back seat in your bid to feel comfortable. There are a lot of clever ways in which you can doll up for winter, without looking boring. Here are 7 looks you can try this winter to look chic while keeping the chills away!
7 Winter Looks To Stay Fashionably Warm
From Monday through to Sunday, we have you covered for the entire week with 7 unique winter looks you can do with great comfort and ease. Best part – you don’t need to buy anything extra to pull these off. Ready? Here we go!
1. Back To The 90s!
[caption id="attachment_198380" align="alignnone" width="533"] Image Source: Pinterest[/caption]
The skirt-with-leggings look is very reminiscent of the 90s. It is so comfortable to wear that we are indeed grateful that it’s back in fashion! This look is very versatile because you can swap individual garments in the look to feel warmer, or cooler. On really cold days, you can wear thermal leggings under the skirt. On the slightly warmer winter days (at the beginning and end of the season) you can switch to thinner-fabric leggings, or even stockings. The top need not always be turtle neck; however, you can throw on an extra layer in the form of a jacket to feel extra snug!
2. Boss Lady
[caption id="attachment_198373" align="alignnone" width="533"] Image Source: Fashiongum[/caption]
Winter is the perfect season to wear a pant suit. If you want to add a flair to your look, you can swap your regular fitted pants for a wide-bottom pallazo. Wear a legging inside to add an extra layer for the colder days. As for the top, keep it snug and short if you’re wearing pallazos. For a more trim look, wear the pants with a full-sleeved t-shirt, and throw on an elaborate scarf. Complete the look with a duster coat to add panache to your look.
3. Fusion Saree
[caption id="attachment_198374" align="alignnone" width="533"] Image Source: Womenitems[/caption]
Dreading that wedding or reception in December? Worry not! One way to warm up your saree is to team it up with an elaborate jacket or a sweater. You can wear a sweater in place of the blouse. You can also opt for a warm crop-top depending on how cold it is. However, if you want to wear your saree the traditional way, you can add a chic blazer to give your look an edge. You can even throw on an elaborate woollen cape to crank up the style quotient of your saree look. Finally, don’t forget to keep your legs warm – consider wearing Long-Johns inside if attending an evening ceremony.
4. Glow With Flow
[caption id="attachment_198375" align="alignnone" width="533"] Image Source: Pinterest[/caption]
Dark colours retain heat better. However, if you like light and bright colours, opt for them in natural fibres, to get a light and warm look. Most natural fibres – except silk – are great for winters. You can go for a completely Indian look. The more flowy your garments are, the better they will circulate air, allowing your body to adapt to temperature changes. Pair a khadi skirt or wide-bottom cotton pants (preferably one that has an inner cotton-lining for extra warmth) with a long flowing kurta, and layer it up with an embroidered pashmina shawl or simple a dark coloured dupatta. You can even go for a poncho, wearing a snug camisole or a sleeveless warm crop-top underneath..
5. Shirt + T-Shirt
[caption id="attachment_198376" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Image Source: Mycitymylondon[/caption]
No need to pack away that favourite t-shirt dress just because it is cold outside now! You can use it as a base layer, and throw on a long plaid shirt. Make sure the shirt is either as long as the t-shirt dress, or longer, but never shorter than the dress. Dress your legs appropriately, depending on how cold or warm it is. This is a great look for day-time fun outdoors, when the sun warms things up a little.
6. ‘Fun’jabi Kudi
[caption id="attachment_198377" align="alignnone" width="533"] Image Source: Pinterest[/caption]
This one is for the days when it seems like too much effort to go through your wardrobe to work up a look! All you have to do for this one to work out is ditch your duppatta and instead find a long sleeveless cardigan to pair with your kurta. You can add an element of ‘fusion’ to this fun look by using a broad belt to hold the cardigan in place. If you want to opt for something more practical, go for a Nehru jacket or a multi-coloured quilted jacket.
7. Back To Basics
[caption id="attachment_198378" align="alignnone" width="533"] Image Source: Pinterest[/caption]
As the week comes to an end, you can go back to the basics with a well-fitted pair of jeans, and a nice comfy sweatshirt. Wear sports-shoes for a casual look, and pumps for a more feminine look.
One general thumb-rule that applies for all the above looks is – you can wear close-toed footwear. For the Indian looks, you can try jutis or mojdis, whereas for the Western looks, you can opt for ankle-boots or just regular pumps teamed with leg warmers.

Raspberry Orange Smoothie
The name very much describes the smoothie! It’s made of raspberries, fresh orange juice, home-made yoghurt and a hint of sweetener like honey or sugar. This beverage can be had for breakfast or as a quick mid-meal-pick-me-up snack to boost the energy levels. We recommend using frozen raspberries, as it will give a slushier consistency to the smoothie.
