Hepatitis B Vaccine for Babies
Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis B virus or HBV. The virus can be transmitted from person to person in many ways, including blood transfusions, saliva, and other body fluids. It can be hard to pinpoint if your little one is infected as most people with Hepatitis B do not display any signs or symptoms, while other people experience high fever, chills, coughing and jaundiced skin. Hepatitis B can only be diagnosed through a blood test. The disease is quite dangerous as around 20% of all infected children can develop dangerous conditions like liver cirrhosis or cancer over time. Hepatitis B infects 350 million people around the world, most of whom acquired it as children. While it is usually contracted through unsafe sexual intercourse and sharing drug needles in adults, most children are infected when they are born or in their first few years.
What is Hepatitis B Vaccination?
Like all vaccinations, Hepatitis B vaccines can prevent infection by immunising the body against attack. The vaccine consists of degraded viral particles that cause the immune system to activate its defences against the Hepatitis B virus. The vaccination is provided by health organisations around the country as part of the routine vaccinations your child goes through. Please ensure you give your child their first dose immediately after birth.
Is Hepatitis B Vaccine Safe for Babies?
Hepatitis B vaccines are safe for all babies. However, some children might experience allergic reactions to the vaccine in very rare situations. These reactions are accompanied by fever, inflammation at the injection site, soreness, fatigue or pain, which will disappear soon after.
Because of this, it is crucial that you remain at the clinic for around an hour after your child gets the vaccine. On very rare occasions, anaphylaxis may occur, which is an allergic reaction that includes shortness of breath, oesophageal swelling, enlarged lips and mouth, rashes and so on. If any serious reactions appear after you leave the clinic, contact your health care provider immediately.
Benefits of Hepatitis B Vaccine to Your Child
There are several benefits associated with vaccinating your child against Hepatitis B. Some of them are:
Protection against acquiring Hepatitis B, which can lead to serious complications.
Prevents other people from getting Hepatitis B, as children without symptoms can inadvertently transmit the infection.
Reduces the likelihood of developing liver conditions later in life.
Your child will not have to miss school or have you miss work in order to take care of your child.
Recommended Dosage and Schedule
The Hepatitis B vaccine is given in doses, depending on the age of the child.
1. Recommended Number Of Doses
The Hepatitis B vaccine is given in a set of three doses, along with vaccinations for other illnesses such as whooping cough, polio, diphtheria, influenza and tetanus.
2. Recommended Ages
The Hepatitis B vaccine dose for newborns must be given within the first twelve hours after birth; if not, within the first twenty-four hours is recommended. While usually three doses are given, the entire course consists of six doses, with the second dose is given at four weeks, the third at eight, the fourth at twelve, the fifth at sixteen, and the final dose at one year. At this point, your doctor will conduct a blood test to check for the presence of the virus in your child.
How Long Do the Effects of the Hep B Vaccine Last?
The effective time period of different vaccinations ranges from a few months to an entire lifetime. Research has shown that the immune system remembers the virus for at least two decades, for those vaccinated as newborns. After this time, one can get the vaccination once again as an adult.
How to Take Care of Your Child After Hep B Vaccination?
Getting vaccinated is a painful process, so make sure you cuddle and comfort your little one during and after the procedure. Also be aware of any developing symptoms which might indicate an allergic reaction. You may use a cool cloth to soothe the pain from the injection as well.
Side Effects of Hepatitis B Vaccine
There are no long-term side effects of Hepatitis B or for that matter, any other vaccine. As already explained above, your child might experience a serious anaphylactic shock in extremely rare cases, the symptoms of which can include severe blistering, peeling, and red or purple skin rashes, shortness of breath, etc. Slight fever, fussiness, diarrhoea, etc. are mild side effects which should subside soon. Your baby might experience some discomfort due to the invasiveness of the method, but aside from this you need not have any concern,
Which Infants Should Avoid Hepatitis B Vaccine?
Vaccination for hepatitis B comes with a few warnings. If your child is sick, like with the flu, please let them recover fully before the vaccination procedure. Also, if they have displayed symptoms of allergy to previous vaccinations, or are allergic to baker’s yeast, please inform your doctor before getting the vaccination. The latter is because the Hepatitis B vaccine is prepared using baker’s yeast, and some residual yeast proteins might still be present in the vaccine solution.
Precautions to be Taken While Giving Hepatitis B Vaccine to Preemies
If you have a premature baby, there is no need to get them the Hepatitis B vaccine before they turn at least one month old. Consult with your child’s paediatrician about the ideal time for vaccination.
Vaccinating your baby is one of the most important things you can do to protect them against a wide variety of preventable illnesses. Certain vaccines have been linked to autism in children, but please pay no heed to them as they have no scientific basis whatsoever and in fact, there are a number studies that disprove this link. Vaccines are completely safe and a crucial requirement for your child to lead a long healthy life.

Helpful Tips to Deal With a Manipulative Child
Kids and tantrums go hand-in-hand. They learn to throw tantrums for every little thing, and they learn this before even learning the word 'tantrum.' As babies, they cry when they are hungry, sleepy, or need their parents' attention. So every time they cry for food, nappy change, or just for some lap time, and their parents come running to them, it affirms sub-consciously in their minds the notion that crying gets them what they want.
They use that subconscious knowledge to convince their parents to get them toys, chocolates, extra playing time, pizza, or anything else as they grow up. They convince their parents they “need” those things despite already having so many of them through cajoling, crying, or flattery. At times when these tactics fail to get them what they want, or these tactics are not giving them favorable results, they may start using lies, speaking ill to the parent, making the parents feel guilty for not being caring and loving, or doing a favor/chore to make the parent feel obligated to comply with their demands.
All these skillful tactics of the kids to make their parents give in to their whims and fancies is manipulation. Sometimes children may use such manipulative tactics to gain the attention or praise of their parents, siblings, and even friends.
Reasons Your Child Manipulates You
Children may manipulate their parents for numerous reasons ranging from emotional needs or material gains. While children can manipulate you, you should not encourage such behavior. Parents often wonder at what age can a child manipulate them. Well, your child can start to manipulate even at a young age. As your kid grows, this manipulative behavior can harm their psyche and personality. Therefore, it’s critical to discipline a manipulative child from the starting. Some common reasons behind your child manipulating you can be:
To get toys or gifts or other things they want
When you don’t permit them to do something such as staying out or playing at their friend's place or eating chocolates before meals, they may use manipulative tactics to settle a score with you, or provoke you to make you angry.
When they know you value their happiness or want to see them happy, they may emotionally manipulative you to make you do what they want.
When they feel neglected, they use manipulation to gain your attention.
To fit in with their friends or peers or social circle, they manipulate you to create a sense of anxiety, and you buy them things.
To know they have power over you.
To gain your love and care, they manipulate you to make you feel guilty of neglecting them or being uncaring.
To cover their mistake, they use manipulative lies.
At times, your kids might use manipulation to express their feelings.
Sometimes to express their frustration, overwhelm or fear, they use manipulation.
On the birth of their sibling, your kid may throw tantrums or manipulate you to express their distress or insecurity.
Signs and Symptoms of a Manipulative Child
The signs of manipulation by your child may not always be straightforward and often subtle, making you feel you are mistaken or the child is just behaving like a child. It won’t always be easy for you to pinpoint their tactics or stop a manipulative child. However, a few common signs and symptoms can help you know whether your child is manipulative. They are:
1. Emotional Outbursts
Your child might not be able to take “no” as an answer when you deny them anything. They may get irritated or exhausted when you don’t grant them their wish. When this happens, the child may get out of control and find it challenging to control their emotions. This can result in aggression, outbursts, crying, or rudeness. Such intense emotional behavior can confuse you as a parent, and out of concern for your child, you may be obliged to grant their wish or fulfill their request.
2. Temper Tantrums
Another usual sign of manipulation used by your child is throwing temper tantrums. Intense, angry outbursts by your child for a short duration or till they have got what they wanted are the primary characteristic of temper tantrums. Sometimes they may refuse to eat or refuse to talk to you to blackmail you into fulfilling their wishes emotionally. Your child may resort to blatantly ignoring you or shout ill words at you such as – they hate you, you are the worst parent, they don’t want to live with you, etc. When outside, they may embarrass you in public by lying down on the floor or crying out loud to get a new toy or chocolate that you refused. Though temper tantrums are a common occurrence in young kids, you should step in to stop them when your child does it often.
3. Lying
When your child cannot get something from you, they might resort to playing the victim card or lying in front of others to show their parents are not good enough or don’t want to see them happy. This can persuade you or force you to provide them with more things than they need or are necessary. Besides lying, your child may also resort to guilt-tripping their peers or siblings, or relatives in doing things for them. They can also use emotional blackmail to get what they want. In extreme cases, when your child can easily get away with lying and manipulation, they can gaslight someone or make them doubt their own beliefs or judgments.
How to Handle a Manipulative Child?
You may feel your child is selfish if they are skilled at devising new methods to wear you down to acquire what they want. You may often wonder how to parent a manipulative child in such situations. However, it is important to remember that it is natural for children to desire what they want and strive to have it at any cost. It's natural for you to become frustrated and exhausted as a parent. You may succumb to these tendencies at times. It is, nevertheless, vital to draw a line and put an end to the manipulative pattern. Some strategies for handling your manipulative child are:
1. Set some goals
Setting objectives is critical to attaining any goal. At times, kids are prone to manipulating their parents to acquire what they desire. If you see that your kid’s conduct is getting repetitive, consider setting clear goals for them.
You may, for example, challenge your child to wait patiently for seven days for a specific request to be fulfilled. This would assist the kid in pausing and controlling the need to act on impulse. One week may make a huge difference in your child's disposition and close the door to manipulation and instant fulfillment.
2. Have an action plan
An action plan for your child can be something you ask your child to follow whenever they ask for something or crave attention. The action plan should be on your family values and having desirable personality traits. You can customize an action plan keeping your child in mind with pointers. You should prepare your action plan based on specific goals or targets, such as desirable behavior change in your child or healthy habits that are doable by your child. It should be written and stuck on the refrigerator or pinned on a wall where your child can see it for regular reminders. This will teach your child an appropriate way to get things they want without using manipulative behavior.
3. Distract your child
You can also manage your child’s manipulative behavior using distractions. Engaging your child in some play or activity can serve as a coping mechanism for the kid when you refuse their request or delay fulfilling it. Find a few distractions that suit the sensory modalities of your child, so the child can easily use them or get interested in them. There can be visual distractions such as their favorite cartoon show or their favorite animal image that your child finds interesting. You can also use auditory distractions such as melodious music or song that is different from the usual sounds around your child. The new thing will make the child curious and easily distract them. You can also go for tactile distractions, including living or non-living objects. Tactile distraction offer stimulation to the child as when the child touches these objects, they will get a warm feeling and get distracted.
4. Be your child’s role model
A typical and effective method is to shape your child by portraying yourself as a role model for them to follow. We learn to act like humans by observing others, also known as social learning. You can act as role models for your children by showing them patience when they need something from someone. You can undertake a role-play in front of your kids to show them how to wait for something when they ask for it. This strategy is useful for teaching social interaction, communication, self-control, and various other skills.
You may also use an indirect role modeling strategy, such as displaying a film or telling a tale that incorporates lessons on manipulative behavior management, to teach your children. Characters in the movie or tale would be separate from the child's identity, allowing you to avoid condemning and humiliating them while educating them.
5. Participate and instruct
When you learn something with your children, it is called guided participation. Reading a tale with your children or role-playing with them can help. Role reversal is a type of psychodrama that helps adults and children to express their emotions, learn about one another, and promote and practice positive conduct. This is also a chance for you to see the world through the eyes of your child.
For this, you might use a range of activities. For example, you can compose tales, meditate and practice mindfulness, engage in physical activities such as dancing, sketch different characters, or recreate a scene using dialogues.
6. Set clear rules
Set clear instructions for your kids to behave accordingly. Write them down and place them in a visible area. The rules should be simple and not strict and shouldn’t restrict your child’s thoughts and actions. All family members should follow the same rules, and the kids should know what they can do and what they can’t. The rules will teach your children responsibility, and the chances of throwing tantrums will reduce.
7. Offer realistic rewards
When your children display good behavior or follow the rules set by you, controlling their manipulative behavior, offer a reward to your child. The reward can be tangible or intangible; however, it should be predictable and inform your child that it teaches self-control and patience. You can even make a list of rewards in consultation with your child and modify them according to their interests.
8. Help your child for catharsis
The psychological process of catharsis is useful for releasing painful and negative feelings and relieving our souls of the heavyweight. It is something that everyone requires at some time in their lives. People who keep their sentiments to themselves sometimes find it difficult to escape them, resulting in outbursts that can harm themselves and others. Even your child may sometimes need to relieve them from the negative or pent-up emotions. To help your child to express themselves freely, you can engage in a few activities such as a verbal game of sharing some annoying incident related to the given word, asking questions to your child that helps them to share their feelings, or writing letters to someone without posting the letter or discarding it afterward.
9. Teach journaling
Engage your child in journaling to focus on their mental health and treat manipulative child development. Ask your child to write their thoughts and feelings, including good and bad things. This excellent process is a good way to ensure your child stays positive and purges their negative thoughts and feelings. You can ask your child to set a regular time for journaling daily and maintain a colorful journal to record their happiness and pain.
10. Manage their stress
Your child's or anyone's rage and irritable conduct are frequently triggered by stress. And stress triggers may range from toys to foods, places, people, and events, all of which might cause your child to get agitated. Create a comfortable atmosphere at home to avoid activating the child's manipulative behaviors. You might also study more about children's stress and coping techniques to assist your children in dealing with any scenario.
11. Involve them in healthy family activities
To develop your link and establish a deep and strong relationship with your child, involve them in planning daily meals, weekly activities, and leisure time. After school and on weekends, you may perform various activities together.
Your child's pranks and manipulative behavior might sometimes wear on your nerves, and monitoring their conduct can be difficult, especially when it isn't always obvious. Try the suggestions provided here, and if nothing appears to work despite your efforts, don't be afraid to seek expert assistance.

How to Make Your First Grader a 'Pro' at Spelling
The development of your child is not just about his pragmatic knowledge. Schools around the world place a great emphasis on linguistic recognition, particularly with grammar. A large part of the first-grade curricula around the world is heavily based on spelling. Here is how you can make your first grader a spelling pro.
What Are the Basic Spellings Taught to a Child in Grade 1?
When learning to spell in grade 1, your child will be eased into words that are age-appropriate. This means there won’t be many silent alphabets in the initial stages of your child’s academic year. The words will be a combination of consonant-vowel-consonant. He will expand his vocabulary by learning word families. For example, after learning a word like 'dad', he will learn rhyming words like 'bad', 'sad', 'mad', 'had', 'fad', etc. This guide will help prepare your child to become a word-whiz.
List of Words That Are Great to Prepare Your Child for Spelling Games and Contests
There are a few words that you can help your child learn, which will help him prepare for games and contests. Here are a few words you can begin with.

Introduce these words slowly to your child and make sure to pace it to his comfort. Use this opportunity to bond with your child and do not add any pressure when he is learning.
How Can Parents Help Their Children Ace at Spelling
Teaching your children can be challenging, especially if you do not use the right techniques. Here is how to teach spelling to first graders in the most effective manner.
Using flashcards with words on them is a good way to help your child recollect all that he has learnt. You can make it more fun for your child if you involve him in making the flashcards.
Teach the words by first using them in sentences. Make interesting sentences so that your child will be able to recall words. You can also have the sentences relate to them. For example, ‘My favourite colour is RED’.
Writing is one of the best ways to remember the spelling of a word. As your child's hand moves over the letters repeatedly, the words will get deeper into his memory and will help him recall the spelling quicker.
Make learning the spellings of words a part of his daily routine. As you go through your day, point out objects that your child has learnt and ask him to spell the same. Make this a game where you participate too.
Learning spellings can be a great use of your child's time with technology. There are many apps that will help your child learn spellings, and you can use these effectively. There are numerous YouTube videos that help teach new words in a fun and effective manner.
Teaching your child how to spell is an important milestone in his education and development. However, there are certain things that you must keep in mind when teaching children.
Do not put undue pressure on your child. As a first grader, your child becomes a part of the schooling system and might find the whole experience overwhelming. Adding the pressure of having to learn the spellings of every word perfectly might prove to be too much for him.
Do not compare your child to others. Comparing children to others is one of the worst things you can do to their self-esteem and you must expect your child to progress only according to his capabilities.
Ask your child if he likes to participate in games and contests. He should not feel like he is being forced into situations he does not enjoy, as he might lose his interest in learning.
Choose words which are age specific and do not get carried away by introducing hard words to test his capabilities. If he struggles with complex words, stop and take a break. Then go back to the simple words. If your child gets frustrated, he will lose motivation.
There is no one defined path to learning. Children use different ways to learn. This can range from aural to tactile, and you must experiment with different techniques to make the activity fun for him.
Teaching your child to spell should be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your child. Use this opportunity to bond with your child rather than making it about participating and winning contests. Sign him up for games only if he says that he is interested and respect his decision.

How I Brought My Baby Home During the Chennai Floods
My elder son was 2 1/2 years old when I was pregnant with my second child. I was in Chennai for my delivery. It was the 28th of Nov, 2015. It was a dull and cloudy day, and I had become restless during the night.
I had fever chills and my mom applied balm to my forehead and covered me with heavy blankets.
A few minutes later, mild pain started. I urged my parents to take me to the hospital since I felt that it was labour. My parents, my first child and I got into the car. It was raining heavily outside. My mom informed my husband and in-laws who were in Dubai at that time.
We reached the hospital by early morning. I was taken to the labour room. The doctor was waiting for dilation. To my aunt, I would ask about my son and my parents. She would tell me that they are waiting outside. After an hour or so, I felt so stressed and requested her to call my mom inside.
A few minutes later, my mom stepped in and her eyes were red with tears. I consoled her and asked about my son. She told me that he was with my dad and that they were taking good care of him. From 3.30 am and to 1.30 pm the next day, I underwent labour. I was feeling a bit restless.
It was around 2.40 pm. Severe labour pain had started. Around 2.45 pm I gave birth to my younger son. A few minutes later, my dad stepped in asking about the baby and my condition. I pleaded to see my elder son. Then, he revealed that my son had a high fever and fits. He was taken to the emergency childcare hospital. The doctors suspected that they were febrile convulsions.
However, with expert care and treatment, my son's temperature came down in an hour. When the nurse asked me if she could bring me the little one, I told her to wait since my heart was wandering to see my son who was not well.
With a big list of procedures and lab tests, my son was discharged that evening. My mom came to see me in the hospital along with my son. You can't imagine my mental condition at that time. I grabbed and hugged my son, had no words to explain that situation, just the tears.
My son said, "Amma all ok now, fever jus flied and will go home." We told him that we would be taking our baby along as well. Only God knows how we came home as the roads were flooded and our car was sailing on the water. With the water level covering the bonnet of our car and hoping for a grip to hold for our lives, it is was a dangerous situation.
I was watching the floods in Kerala and the Indian Army rescuing a pregnant woman from a remote area. At that time I thought I should share my experience during the floods in Chennai. I hope nobody has to go through this.

The only hug safe for my baby is that by Babyhug
I was a naive mother and hardly knew about many brands of baby products. Many of us go through this phase and suffer from great confusion and anxiety in choosing a safe and good quality brand of products for our little ones. Being experienced now I can safely recommend Babyhug for all mother's to use for their babies. The first time I used a Babyhug product was simply on the basis going by good reviews on FirstCry. It was a great decision. I had purchased a feeding pillow. It proved to be so useful. Not only it looked great but also it was sturdy yet soft. I went on to trying more products by them and till date have never been disappointed. The bathtub was a delight. It was cushioned and could be folded too. It also came with a drainage plug that's such a useful feature. I bought their baby wipes and since then they're my favourite. It's mildly scented and has just the right amount of wetness. It is gentle on the skin too. I myself switched to Babyhug wrt wipes for cleaning my face too. My daughter's first finger brush too was by Babyhug. It was so soft on the gums yet effective. Their sippers are a must for babies. They look so attractive and help babies switch from bottles easily. And of course how can I forget the clothes! I still make her wear Babyhug clothes. They're of great quality and very tasteful. Products are of great make and not unnecessarily expensive. I wish the brand every success and intend to remain a loyalist forever. Thank you so much Babyhug for being such an important part of my motherhood. I wish I can use their products for as long as possible. Read more
