Eye Infections in Babies - Types, Symptoms and Treatment
It’s disheartening to see your baby in pain. In case you find your baby’s eyes crusty, gunky or red, it's likely an eye infection. Eye infections are common in babies and can be caused by an allergy, irritation or infection.
Types of Eye Infections in Babies
Here are the common types of eye infections:
1. Sty
If your child has a red bump on his eyelid, it's a sty.
Symptoms
The bump is tender and filled with pus. You may also see white or yellow discharge from your baby's eyes.
Causes
It happens when bacteria infect an oil gland which is present at the base of the eyelash. It is by no means serious but still should be treated before anything more serious happens.
Treatment
Apply a Warm Compress
Soak a clean cloth in warm water and press it against your baby’s eyes for 15 minutes. The heat will open the pus and help it drain faster. Repeat this procedure 4 times a day.
Leave the Sty Alone
Don't pop or squeeze the sty to drain the pus. This will cause more pain to your little one and also transfer bacteria from your hands to his eyes.
2. Pinkeye/Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the inner eyelid or eyeball.
Symptoms
If the whites or rims of your baby’s eyes are red, it could be pinkeye or conjunctivitis.
Causes
Viral Eye Infection
If your baby has a cold along with pinkeye, it is usually due to a virus.
Bacterial Eye Infection
If you notice a thick yellow discharge in your baby’s eyes, it could be due to an infection by bacteria such as staphylococcus, streptococcus or Haemophilus.
Allergic Reactions
This is a rare cause, but your baby might be allergic to smoke, dust or any other allergen, especially if the eyes are swollen, red and watery.
Treatment
Conjunctivitis heals on its own. Your paediatrician will tell you to keep your baby’s eyes clean. If the condition persists beyond two weeks, it's better to consult the doctor again.
3. Chalazion
A chalazion is a lump or cyst which forms on the eyelid.
Symptoms
It can start small but grow big as a pea. Unlike a sty, it doesn't produce discharge and isn't contagious or painful. However, it can blur your baby’s vision.
Causes
A chalazion is due to chronic inflammation of one of the oil-producing glands located in the upper or lower eyelid.
Treatment
Administer OTC Medication
Never squeeze a chalazion. Use antibiotics and ointments prescribed by the paediatrician.
Apply a Warm Compress
This can help to soften the duct blocked with oil and cause drainage of the pus. Press a warm, wet compress against the affected area for 15 minutes; repeat this process 4 times a day.
Seek Medical Help
Consult an ophthalmologist if the chalazion doesn’t go away even after a warm compress. Your baby may need an injection or a surgical procedure to remove it.
4. Periorbital and Orbital Cellulitis
If your baby’s eyes are red and swollen shut, it could be because of periorbital or orbital cellulitis.
Symptoms
These include fever, runny nose and conjunctivitis.
Causes
This is a serious bacterial eye infection in infants which happens when harmful bacteria enter the eye. It can affect one eye or both.
Treatment
Consult your baby’s doctor immediately. He will examine your baby’s eyes using cultures, blood tests, and X-ray tests and prescribe ointments or an injection to clear the infections. It usually goes away in 2 days, but you can give your baby the antibiotics till the doctor tells you to stop.
5. Blepharitis
If you see your baby’s eyelids inflamed and his eyes watery, red and irritated, it may be because of blepharitis.
Signs
The eyelashes may fall off if another infection happens alongside blepharitis.
Causes
Blepharitis is due to overproduction of oil in the eyelid or a bacterial infection. It does not cause any vision problem but may be followed by a sty, chalazion or conjunctivitis if not treated in time.
Treatment
Consult your doctor to be doubly sure. After that, you can use saline solutions or baby shampoos to wash your baby’s eyes, followed by antibiotic drops and a warm compress.
6. Blocked Tear Ducts
As the name suggests, it happens when the tear ducts are blocked due to fluids and become swollen.
Signs
If you see lots of sticky discharge that glues your baby’s eyes shut and eyelashes together, it can be due to a blocked tear duct.
Causes
When the baby is inside your uterus, the tissue within the tear duct usually dissolves and leaves a hollow core. If that doesn’t happen, the tissue may remain and block the duct.
Treatment
Usually a blocked duct opens on its own, and the discharge will go away with time. You can use warm water to wet a cloth in water to clean the discharge from your baby’s eyes. If the condition still persists when your baby is 12-18 months old, consult a doctor as she or he may need surgery.
Home Remedies for Eye Infection in Infants
Here are some effective home remedies to treat your baby’s eye infection:
Boil water and place a tea bag in it for a few minutes. Remove the tea bag and wring it to drain out the excess water. Place it on your baby’s eyelids to soothe the pain and irritation.
Add some salt to boiling water and allow it to cool down. Dip a cotton ball into this mixture and place it on your baby’s eyelid for relief.
Breast milk is also a surprisingly effective home remedy as it has antibacterial healing properties. Using a clean dropper, place two drops of breast milk on the affected area around your baby’s eyes.
Soak some jasmine flowers in clean water overnight. Apply the liquid to the affected eye using a dropper. Jasmine flower has a cooling effect.
Chamomile oil is also effective in treating an eye infection. Add a few drops of chamomile oil to a pan of boiling water and allow it to cool. Apply the mixture to the affected eyelid using a cotton ball.
If the eye infection is due to a blocked tear duct, gently massage the area between the eyes and the nasal area.
A bacterial eye infection can only be treated with ointments or antibiotic drops. However, you can clean the sticky yellow discharge around your infant’s eyes with saltwater eye drops.
Using a warm compress on your baby’s eyes reduces irritation and swelling.
It is extremely important to wash and sanitise your hands before and after touching your infant’s infected eyes.
Of course, the above-mentioned home remedies are effective, but it's always better to consult your paediatrician when an eye infection develops. During such times, keep your infant away from other children.

Is Using Baby Lotion on Newborns Safe?
Once you welcome your newborn into the world, caring for the little one becomes a top priority. A question many first-time mothers have is about skin care for newborns. Newborns have delicate skin that is vulnerable to irritation and dryness. Although newborn skin does not require additional moisturisation very often, the skin does get dry after baths and may require a small amount of moisturiser to replenish the natural skin oils lost due to bathing or dry air. Hence, it is safe to use lotion to protect your little one’s skin.
When Can You Start Putting Lotion on a Newborn Baby?
Newborn babies have a covering over their skin called ‘vernix’. This is a waxy layer of protection that covered their body in the womb to protect their skin from the amniotic fluid. This layer starts peeling off in the first few weeks after birth, giving the appearance of dry, flaky skin. The skin below this layer is moist enough and does not need extra moisturisation.
However, you can use a moisturiser if the baby seems to have very dry skin, especially around the ankles, elbows and hands. It is safe to use petroleum jelly, olive oil or Vitamin A-D cream to help with the appearance of the skin when the vernix is peeling off. If you want to use store-bought moisturiser, it is best to use a mild, fragrance-free one or one that has been recommended by your newborn’s paediatrician.
Why Does a Newborn Baby's Skin Need Lotion?
A newborn baby’s skin is actually quite moist under the outermost layer. However, it does need lotion or a moisturiser as it can become dry when exposed to dry air in the room and also, after a bath. It is best not to bathe your newborn baby more than thrice a week, as this can strip the baby’s delicate skin of all the oils that keep the skin soft and supple.
The baby's skin is sensitive and prone to irritation and eczema. Hence, you may need to use lotion or moisturiser to soothe skin irritation and combat baby eczema.
You can use lotions that are mild and fragrance-free to keep your newborn’s skin from becoming too dry. You can also use olive oil or petroleum jelly if you do not wish to use commercially available baby creams and lotions.
Tips to Apply Baby Lotion on Newborn
Here are some tips on how to use baby lotion on newborns:
1. Apply Lotion After Bath
Baths can dry the baby’s skin, so apply a fragrance-free, gentle lotion. Clean your hands thoroughly. Take a small amount and spread it on the palms and fingers of your hands. Gently massage the baby’s body such that the lotion spreads evenly all over.
2. Use Lotion on Areas That Look Dry
Apply lotion to areas of the baby’s body that appear very dry, such as the ankles, elbows, and hands.
3. Avoid Using More than One Product
Do not use more than one product on your baby as the chemicals in commercially manufactured lotions can harm the delicate newborn skin. Choose one that has been recommended by your paediatrician and continue with it.
Safety Measures to Take While Applying Lotion
Here are some safety tips to follow while applying lotion on your newborn:
Choose a mild lotion, free of harmful chemicals.
Clean your hands thoroughly before applying lotion on your baby’s body.
Make sure you do not have sharp nails, as you could scratch the baby’s skin when you apply the lotion.
Avoid using several baby products as this can harm the newborn’s skin.
Wash new clothes before the baby wears them to reduce the risk of skin irritations or allergies.
Do not bathe your baby more than thrice a week, as it strips the baby’s skin of natural moisture.
How to Choose the Best Lotion for Your Newborn?
To find out what is the best lotion for newborn baby, follow these tips:
Pick a mild and gentle lotion that is free of perfume, colours, parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, preservatives, and organically extracted plant oils.
Choose a lotion that is doctor-recommended, rather than buying one at a store.
If you prefer not to buy lotion, you can use olive oil, petroleum jelly or doctor-recommended vitamin A-D cream.
Use a lotion that is hypoallergenic on your baby’s skin to avoid any allergic reactions.
When to Consult a Doctor?
If your baby has very dry, itchy, peeling skin along with redness, it could be eczema, and you should see a paediatrician right away. Baby eczema is usually seen on the hands, face, and back of the knees. You should also consult a doctor if the baby continues to have very dry skin despite using a moisturiser.
Although your baby's skin is moist enough and does not require lotion, it is not really unsafe to use a gentle lotion. Consult a doctor before using any new product on your baby.

Ultrasound Scan and Fertility
Ultrasound scans are very essential for the assessment of fertility in women, who face difficulty in conceiving naturally. It helps a doctor diagnose possible causes for infertility such as evaluating the ovaries, endometrium, uterus, and the fallopian tubes. Based on the diagnosis, the doctor recommends a suitable fertility treatment.
What is the Use of Ultrasound Scan for Fertility?
An ultrasound probe emits high-frequency sound waves, which bounces off the organs and tissues in the body and reflect on the probe. When attached to a computer, these reflections are reconstructed into images on the monitor. A doctor uses the ultrasound for fertility testing and assesses reproductive organs and the pelvic areas to rule out any possible pathological or structural reasons of infertility, described as follows.
1. Ovaries
If you are facing difficulty in conceiving, your doctor will examine your ovaries, their shape and size, and check for the occurrence of any normal or abnormal cysts. Presence of numerous small cysts, appearing like a pearl necklace can indicate the possibility of a polycystic ovarian syndrome, whereas, a larger endometrioma cyst can mean endometriosis.
2. Antral Follicles
Antral follicles measure between 2 and 10 mm in diameter and consist of a fluid-filled cavity known as antrum. These follicles become visible through a transvaginal ultrasound on day 2, 3, or 5 of your cycle. Measuring the antral follicle count helps in:
Evaluating ovarian reserve.
Diagnosing the primary ovarian insufficiency.
Determining your fertility potential with respect to your age (a low count indicates poor reserve and high count may indicate PCOS).
3. The Uterus
The technician takes note of the shape, size, and the position of your uterus. He may look for possible indications of uterine masses such as polyps, fibroids or adenomyosis in the uterus using a hysteroscopy or sonohysterogram, if required.
4. Endometrium Thickness
The doctor will also keep a check on the endometrium, the uterine lining as your menstrual cycle progresses. He will examine whether the lining at a stage is as thick as it should be.
5. Fallopian Tubes
Your doctor can see the fallopian tubes through 2D scan only if it is filled with fluid or is swollen. He may use an HSG test or HyCoSy to check if your fallopian tubes are clear or blocked, and the condition hydrosalpinx.
6. Adhesions
Adhesions can occur as a result of prior pelvic infection or endometriosis, and they block the free motion of the reproductive organs. It can be diagnosed by gentle pressing of the transvaginal probe on the ovaries, to see how they move in the pelvic cavity and whether they adhere to each other.
7. Blood Flow to Reproductive Organs
Using a colour Doppler scan, the doctor evaluates the blood flow around a mass or cyst. It is beneficial in distinguishing between a healthy cyst, an ovarian tumour, or an endometrial cyst.
8. Conception Check
An early pregnancy scan after you have been tested positive can help rule out the risk for ectopic pregnancy or a blighted ovum. It can also help detect the foetal heartbeat indicating an ongoing pregnancy.
Types of Ultrasound Scan for Infertility
Ultrasound scans play a significant role in investigating complex issues concerning the fertility of a woman. The type of ultrasound performed depends on the stage of your pregnancy or fertility treatment at a given moment. For women in their mid to late pregnancies, abdominal ultrasounds are more common, whereas, for women undergoing fertility testing or infertility treatment, a majority of the scans are carried out are transvaginal. The different kinds of ultrasound scans are described in brief as follows.
1. Abdominal Ultrasound
An abdominal ultrasound is the most commonly performed scan to monitor a woman's pregnancy. In this scan, you will be asked to keep your bladder full for the procedure. The full bladder pushes the intestines away a bit, so the image appears clear. In an abdominal scan, a gel will be applied over your abdomen, which will make it smooth and easy for the ultrasound probe to be slid over your skin.
2. Transvaginal Ultrasound
In this case, the ultrasound is performed vaginally so that the doctor can assess the reproductive organs more closely. Here the transducer is shaped in the form of a slender and long wand. A condom is pulled over the wand, and a lubricating gel is applied on the tip before placing it inside the vagina, right before the cervix.
3. Antral Follicle Count
This test is performed through the transvaginal ultrasound device and requires specialization by the technician. It helps in determining your ovarian reserve and diagnosing polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
4. 3D Ultrasound
The ultrasound scans usually produce 2D images, but with the help of advanced technologies, it is possible to generate three-dimensional images. It helps detect the problems in fallopian tubes and uterine abnormalities which are not easily visible in two-dimensional ultrasound scans.
5. Sonohysterogram
In this scan, the doctor transfers a saline solution through a catheter into the uterus. As the saline fills the uterus, it gets easier to visualize the shape of the uterus and check for any existing adhesions within the uterus.
6. Hysterosalpingo - Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy)
Here the doctor sends a mixture of dye or saline along with air bubbles, via a catheter, through the fallopian tubes, to determine if the tubes are open or blocked. The test was earlier done by hysterosalpingogram (HSG), a special x-ray. But HyCoSy is preferred over HSG because:
There is less discomfort as compared to HSG.
No exposure to iodine or radiation.
Can be performed simultaneously with an ultrasound scan.
What Can an Ultrasound Not Diagnose?
A basic ultrasound for fertility check often falls short of diagnosing certain serious issues. Some of them are listed as follows.
1. Blocked Fallopian Tubes
The doctor can examine the fallopian tubes only through the help of hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography (HyCoSy). However, a basic ultrasound scan won't be able to diagnose the fallopian tubes.
2. Endometriosis
An ultrasound may indicate severe cases of endometriosis. It is recommended to use the laparoscopic surgery to detect moderate and less severe cases of endometriosis.
3. Uterine Abnormalities
Certain uterine abnormalities are unlikely to be diagnosed through a simple ultrasound scan. You require hysteroscopy or a sonohysterogram for complete uterus evaluation.
Ultrasound Scan during Infertility Treatment
Ultrasound scans prove vital for infertility treatment, as the doctor can examine the pelvic organs, to check for the growth of ovarian follicles, intrafollicular structures, and endometrial changes during the menstrual cycles. Using ultrasound for infertility problems become more frequent in case of hormone-stimulated cycles as they are required to be performed during ovulation, induction, and at later dates.
1. Baseline Ultrasound Scan
Your doctor may call you to schedule blood work and ultrasound within the first few days of your menstrual cycle. It is the baseline pelvic ultrasound for fertility, which is done to check for the presence of any unusual cysts on the ovaries to determine if fertility drugs could be started for the cycle or should be delayed till the next one.
2. Follicle Growth
You shall be required to frequently visit the clinic for ultrasound scans for follicle monitoring. The fertility medications prescribed to you largely depend on the follicle growth. Based on your treatment and number of mature follicles, you may be scheduled an egg-retrieval, or the cycle may be cancelled if the number is huge.
3. Endometrial Thickness
It is very important to check the uterine endometrial changes during your treatment cycle. The technician will also check for your endometrial thickness because after checking your endometrial thickness, the doctor will be able to alter your medication dosages to ensure a successful cycle.
4. Ultrasound-Guided Procedures
Apart from monitoring purposes, ultrasound is also used to guide some of the treatment, which includes embryo transfer and egg retrieval for IVF where a needle is used to retrieve eggs from the ovaries.
Ultrasound scans play a very important role in your fertility treatment. These scans are performed to monitor your ovulation, thickness, and pattern of the uterine lining, and perform diagnosis for conditions like endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy or presence of pelvic masses. These scans are important to perform as they can ensure a successful pregnancy.

It will give them a sense of belonging to the country they're born in and will help mould them into responsible citizens. So, this 26th January, make an effort to explain to children the significance of the Republic Day of India and make it fun for them by celebrating it in a kid-friendly manner.
The freedom we enjoy today is a gift given to us by those valiant freedom fighters and great leaders who fought for our country’s independence from the British rule. It is our duty, as parents, to make sure that our children love and respect their country, keep patriotism alive.
Most children get confused between the Republic Day and the Independence Day. So it’s important first, to explain to them the difference between the two. Tell them that although India got its independence from the British rule on 15th August 1947, it did not become a republic by adopting its newly written Constitution, until January 26th, 1950. Make sure children they understand this distinction.
Importance of Republic Day
India is a republic. A republic is a country where the power of decision making for the nation lies with the elected representatives from the people itself, rather than a king or a monarch.
Republic Day is celebrated in India on 26th January, since India was declared a republic on 26th January 1950.
After six months of independence from the British rule, our country adopted the constitution written by Dr B. R. Ambedkar, officially.
This was when the Indian Government protected our fundamental rights.
Dr Rajendra Prasad took the oath of being the first president of India. Thousands of people witnessed this wonderful and memorable event with great excitement and jubilation.
This was the commencement of a significant chapter in the journey of modern India since we had officially lifted British laws and made way for citizen-friendly laws.
On this day, there is a Grand Republic Day Parade organised at Rajpath in New Delhi. It wonderfully represents the diverse cultural heritage of all the 29 states of India and showcases to the citizens the competency of the Indian military.
We also pay tribute to our freedom fighters and valiant soldiers who laid down their lives for our safety. Awards such as the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra and Vir Chakra are awarded to brave soldiers posthumously.
Brave children who are the winners of National Bravery Awards are honoured and appreciated.

Tips to Celebrate The Republic Day with Children:
Wake them up early and watch the live telecast of the Republic Day parade together. This way, you’ll get to spend some quality time with them while educating them about our country’s diverse cultures.
Take them to a flag hoisting in your neighbourhood, or make sure they attend the one at their schools.
Organize a fancy dress or talent display competition in your apartment or neighbourhood. Provide the kids with a theme (patriotic, regional, etc.) help them dress up, prepare for the talent display accordingly. Let them choose who/what they want to dress up as and what talent they want to showcase. If it is a dress-up competition, help them prepare a few lines to go with their chosen character.
Get together with the kids in your apartment or neighbourhood and prepare a small patriotic skit for them to present on Republic day. It’ll probably take you a week to rehearse and prepare the costumes and props for the skit, but trust me, they’ll love all the excitement and also learn a thing or two in the process.
Gather the kids from your apartment or neighbourhood and have a Republic Day story-telling session in the evening. Invite people to tell them stories of our struggle for freedom. The kids will hungrily lap these up.
We often remark that this younger generation lacks a sense of patriotism. However, if you want your kid to grow up feeling connected to his country, start teaching him to love and support his country from a young age itself. Don’t just see 26th January as a public holiday - as a day off from work, but use this day as an opportunity to inspire in your kid pride for his country’s rich legacy, history and the value of freedom.

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.

A. A lot of times normal delivery is actually seen in these cases also if the doctor is quick and the child cooperate then yes normal delivery is very much possible but some doctors don’t take a chance with the health of your child and so they normally suggest C-section so let’s see what’s your situation by the end when you are into your labour
