Is your child intelligent? Think before you judge a child's intelligence
When we were children, many a times we have come across elders saying something like this, "My son is very intelligent, he scored 100% in Math", or, "Her daughter always tops the class, he is very intelligent".
In our schools and colleges, we tend to see the professors admiring the class/ university toppers, because, you know, they are "intelligent". I agree that these high scorers get placed well, earn a lot of money and get settled faster.
But what I never agreed with is when these adults have generalized the term "intelligence" with merely the academic scores of the children.
Isn't the child who paints well intelligent? Isn't the child who learns different languages easily intelligent? Isn't the child who sings melodiously or is plays football/cricket really well intelligent?
According to Howard Gardner, a psychologist and Professor at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, intelligence is:
The ability to create an effective product or offer a service that is valued in a culture
A set of skills that make it possible for a person to solve problems in life
The potential for finding or creating solutions for problems, which involves gathering new knowledge
Gardener developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI). According to MI Theory, identifying each student’s intelligences has strong ramifications in the classroom.
If a child's intelligence can be identified, then teachers can accommodate different children more successfully according to their orientation to learning.
Teachers in traditional classrooms primarily teach to the verbal/linguistic and mathematical/logical intelligences.
The nine intelligences are:
1. VISUAL/SPATIAL - children who learn best visually and organizing things spatially. They like to see what you are talking about in order to understand. They enjoy charts, graphs, maps, tables, illustrations, art, puzzles, costumes - anything eye catching.
2. VERBAL/LINGUISTIC - children who demonstrate strength in the language arts: speaking, writing, reading, listening. These students have always been successful in traditional classrooms because their intelligence lends itself to traditional teaching.
3. MATHEMATICAL/LOGICAL - children who display an aptitude for numbers, reasoning and problem solving. This is the other half of the children who typically do well in traditional classrooms where teaching is logically sequenced and students are asked to conform.
4. BODILY/KINESTHETIC - children who experience learning best through activity: games, movement, hands-on tasks, building. These children were often labeled "overly active" in traditional classrooms where they were told to sit and be still!
5. MUSICAL/RHYTHMIC - children who learn well through songs, patterns, rhythms, instruments and musical expression. It is easy to overlook children with this intelligence in traditional education.
6. INTRAPERSONAL - children who are especially in touch with their own feelings, values and ideas. They may tend to be more reserved, but they are actually quite intuitive about what they learn and how it relates to themselves.
7. INTERPERSONAL - children who are noticeably people oriented and outgoing, and do their learning cooperatively in groups or with a partner. These children may have typically been identified as "talkative" or " too concerned about being social" in a traditional setting.
8. NATURALIST - children who love the outdoors, animals, field trips. More than this, though, these students love to pick up on subtle differences in meanings. The traditional classroom has not been accommodating to these children.
9. EXISTENTIALIST - children who learn in the context of where humankind stands in the "big picture" of existence. They ask "Why are we here?" and "What is our role in the world?" This intelligence is seen in the discipline of philosophy.
Once I understood the MI theory, I understood that the children in India are categorized as "Intelligent" based on the type 3, i.e. Mathematical/Logical intelligence.
When I was a student, I was bad at Math. However, I found it very easy to learn different languages, I maintained a personal diary to jot down my inner emotions and I loved spending time with pets and in the nature. So don't I have a mix of linguistic, intrapersonal and naturalistic intelligences? I may not have had the mathematical intelligence, so is that unacceptable?
Children from their kindergarten are molded to give most importance to their academics than anything else. In my schooling days, I observed the parents of my friends unwilling to send their children outside to play sports as it would take away their time from studying their academic subjects.
Instead of spending money or time in following their passion which may be singing or painting, their parents and teachers would force their children to channelize their efforts into academics as that is what would help them get a "well-paid-job".
What the parents and teachers in this country lack is the understanding of helping the children develop an All-Round-Personality. The child must spend a few hours a day in studying his academics, as I do not deny the importance of the education. However, it is also necessary to understand which type of intelligence of the MI theory the child falls under.
The child can study hard and get a decent job, at the same time, the child can also become a poet, a painter, a sports person, an environmentalist or an interior designer. These jobs get paid well too.
I have spend one year in a school that forced the children to study from 8 AM to 8PM, as you know, to become "intelligent". The school had even divided the students into different sections based on their scores (all the top scorers in section A and the least scorers in section D). Didn't the Principal of the school understand how demoralized the students of the section D felt? Thankfully this hell had lasted for only an year after which I changed to another school, that promoted an all-round development of the students (phew!).
So next time you see a parent or a teacher pointing at a class topper and calling them "intelligent", just give them a smile and a sigh at the same time ;). Read more

Tips for Taking Care of a Baby from 0 to 6 Months
I am a mother of a 7-month-old baby boy. I spent all my time focusing only on my baby's stage by stage development as I am very conscious about my baby's health. Now, I have better and enough experience, so I can give a few suggestions and tips to new mothers.
I have a clear knowledge about how to breastfeed a baby and what new moms must consume to increase their breastmilk production. I followed my ancestor's and doctor's advice to take care of my baby's health. I had some experience of my own also, as I have to go through a C-section delivery. I even have a knowledge about what moms should do to take care of their health and what to do to get recover soon from an incision.
A piece of mandatory advice that I would like to give to all the new mothers out there is to avoid taking medicines if you are breastfeeding your baby. Calcium tablets are good enough, as these won't affect your baby's health, and it is good and safe for moms because, during the delivery, we lose our bone strength. To increase your breastmilk production, please try to eat natural foods, like garlic, a glass of milk twice a day, eat nuts instead of eating spicy snacks. Eat spinach on a weekly basis - it increases iron content in mother's milk. For babies older than 4 months, you can give carrot extracts as it can make a baby fair. I gave it to my baby and it worked.
After 6 months, you can start giving apples, beetroot, carrots, ragi, bananas. Give one fruit every day. When giving an apple, you will have to peel the skin of it and boil it for at least 3 minutes. Then mash it with a spoon and give it in semi-solid form.
Note: When u start giving semi-solid foods, then give boiled water so that your baby will not suffer from indigestion. Same procedure you will have to follow for all those mentioned veggies.

5 Running Mistakes To Run Away From
Who doesn't want to look and feel good? Running is one of those activities that can help you achieve both. However, the way you run matters and there are certain running mistakes you make that could stop you from reaping the benefits of this exercise!
They say life is a race, and to run it successfully, we need to revisit the rules from time to time. And just like life, running as an exercise also requires certain rules to be followed. This simple activity releases more than just sweat. It helps us channel negativity in a constructive manner. If you’ve decided to take up running or want more out of it, learn the do’s and don’ts.
Running Mistakes To Avoid For Better Benefits
1. Not warming up
The hardest step is to get started running in the first place. Your body aches, your lungs burn, and you realise just how out of shape you are. One way to make running easier is a nice warm-up. In fact, it’s crucial before performing any exercise. It helps your body get its adequate supply of oxygenated blood. Your muscles don’t feel so stiff and your heart gets ready for action. Stretching, skipping rope and brisk walking are some of the ways you can warm up.
2. Using a treadmill without knowing how
There are technical mistakes that should be avoided if you use a treadmill. Make sure you never run too close or too far from the console unit as you could hinder your running. If the console unit is too near, it may become hard for you to move your arms, whereas if it’s too far, you’ll find it tough to control the speed.
3. Looking down and running
When running on a treadmill, always try to touch the ground with the balls of your feet. If you hit it with your heels, you could fall smack on your knees and get a good bruising. Treadmill users are also cautioned to look ahead and run since looking down to check your step could make you lose your balance and fall.
4. Taking very long strides
Many of us move our arms back and forth when running. While it’s natural, you need to try to tuck in your arms more while still moving them to the rhythm of your pace. It’ll keep you less exhausted. Another way you can work out longer is to control your stride. Try to limit yourself to shorter steps and you’ll notice a significant rise in your stamina.
5. Not maintaining the right posture
Running takes a lot out of you. In order to conserve energy and get enough oxygen, try to keep your shoulders straight and open up your chest. Breathing gets obstructed when you bow your shoulders and you’ll find yourself getting tired fast.
Running might not be everybody's cup of tea, but when done right, it’s easier and less stressful. Get back into shape by eliminating running mistakes you might make. Combine working out with a healthy diet and see amazing results. Run away to glory! Read more

The Evolution of the Mom in Me in a Nutshell
The fascinating journey of a tomboy enduring the joyous path to loving motherhood... that is me in a nutshell.
Being a sister to a very awesome brother was my most inspirational part of being a tomboy. I did almost everything I could do to be a boyish girl. To be the ultimate tomboy - I was quite proud of it too. The masculinity and the strength - I kind of loved the freedom!
That lasted for about a long time until I met the MAN.
All of a sudden, the coin just flipped. I started looking in the mirror pampering me with a few beauty treats. A pink tint of shyness began to bloom in me.
The roses in my garden smelled sensual, the music of romance echoed. The love for red was the deepest. And I was lost in the path of love! And I felt like I'm almost a pretty WOMAN.
Pregnancy - the fruit of love was blossoming in me. I was so fond of the dolphin jumping in me - the bump and the jump! The late-night craving and the early morning sickness. The unexpected stretchy tattoo designs I saw on my tummy. The expectations and the hype of being a mother were beyond the limit. And finally, the bundle of joy, the cuteness overload was in my arms snuggling. On a sweet December evening with Christmas carols surrounding us... such a divine day.
And that was the beginning of the sweetest of all roller coaster rides I have ever been on, and that was the beginning of me evolving into the realm of motherhood. It was not very simple but was more fascinating. The early riser, the snuggling, the burping, the diaper changing, the cute little blue booties, the ever cute angel dress, the late night sleeping, the crying that was almost non-stop! The feeding part was quite a job but was fun when it was his favourite. Making him enjoy his veggies and making creative and eye-catching foods was such a fun part of being a mother. I too love a few of the baby foods. The saddest part was when I had to get immunization for the baby; the pain he experienced during the prick was so sad.
The main target of all was getting healthy and not getting sick, but yeah, it was never possible to always stay away from a running nose or an upset tummy. The little steps in the corridor he took by himself was unforgettable; with his little favourite lion toy, he was truly a 'Lion King'. Later, I thought about the next step - his school, how would he sing with his friends, his cute dance concert, the funny sports events. That was when I started remembering I have not been in front of the mirror like I used to be before, and I almost forgot about grooming myself because I was busy grooming my baby superhero!
And that was when I realised I have come a long way from a from a tomboy to a girl to a woman to a mother and 24/7 dedicated mom friend to my little superhero Alexander!
