Is It Normal for Your Baby to Shake His Head From Side to Side?
Your baby’s first year is marked with several milestones that relate to his reflexes and motor skills - that first smile, the first time he sucks his finger, the first time he lifts his leg, even that lovely sound of blowing raspberries! But when you see your baby shaking his head, it may be a cause of concern for you. You may wonder if he is too little to be shaking his head. In most cases, by the time your baby turns one month old, he will be able to turn his head slightly all by himself. As he grows, his motor skills will increase proportionately and the muscles around his neck will develop to help him turn his head.
It is by the time babies turn 9 months old that they can start shaking their heads from side to side. While it is normal in most cases, sometimes it could indicate a neurological or developmental disorder. This article lists the common reasons why babies shake their heads and when it is a cause for concern.
Why Do Babies Shake Their Head From Side to Side?
When your baby shakes his head, it is just a sign of playfulness and interaction. If babies show normal signs of growth, they will be able to shake their heads to signal 'yes’ or 'no’ by the time they turn one. Most often, during the first few weeks of life, babies display jerky movements as they develop control of their muscles. As a parent, you will definitely be worried if you see your baby shaking his head from side to side all of a sudden. Here are a few reasons why your baby shaking his head is a completely normal thing and should not be any cause for concern:
1. Taking Control of His Body
Most babies start shaking their heads as part of gaining some control over their bodies. Their muscles are developing and they try to imitate every action of the people around them as they discover more about their own bodies. So if your little one does try to shake his head, don’t fret; he’s just learning and testing to see how his body works.
2. Displaying a Sign of Fatigue
Babies shake their heads to soothe themselves when they are tired, to fall asleep. The constant movement causes dizziness and rocks them to sleep within a few minutes. So if your baby is shaking his head while sleeping, it could be a trick he’s using to doze off.
3. Suffering From an Ear Infection
Your baby might shake his head when there is an infection in his ear or when his gums hurt, to feel more comfortable. It is quite common for babies to shake their heads from side to side while teething. While the shaking of the head is normal, if you think your baby is running a temperature, has a cold, or is teething, then it is worth seeking medical advice for his problem.
4. Trying to Latch on While Breastfeeding
Most babies shake their heads when they nurse and are trying to latch on. Once they are used to the routine, they may continue shaking their heads in excitement. It is advisable to support your baby’s head as he nurses during the first three months of his life. It helps to control his muscular reflexes so that he can learn to latch on easily.
5. Shaking His Head While Playing
Babies do shake their heads while playing. You may find your baby shaking his head while on his tummy or his back. The shaking of the head may be one of the things he picks up from his interactions with others. Within 6–8 months, you will find your baby impersonating the behaviour and actions of his peers or siblings at home.
6. Testing How Much They Can Move
Babies are a little daring and will be curious to test how much they will be able to manoeuvre their bodies. When they are around 5–6 months old, babies will start rocking their heads or even their bodies. Although it may look a little scary when your baby shakes his head a lot, it is perfectly normal as it is a precursor to your baby trying to figure out a way to sit up. These kind of rocking and shaking behaviours are only brief spells that last for a few minutes alone.
Is It a Sign of Autism?
Repeated movement, including shaking of the head and certain other signs, could indicate that your baby might be on the autism spectrum. Generally, when your baby shakes his head from side to side, it’s not a sign of autism; however, it is good to pay attention to discover other signs that do not seem normal. These strange behavioural patterns can be often observed by the time your baby is 18 months old. Most children who are not autistic will grow out of these types of behaviour by the time they turn 3 years old. The following signs are more typical of babies who are on the spectrum.
1. Lack of Social Interaction
Babies who don’t interact much with parents and siblings, have a lack of response to their name or sounds, hold an unusual gaze, display no interest or response to smiles may require medical intervention.
2. Poor Communication Signals
A perfectly healthy child will use active gestures and hand movements to communicate. Most 7- to 8-month-old babies point to things and also make sounds to express themselves. Babies with autism will not be able to use gestures appropriately and will also have poor voice quality.
3. Deterioration and Loss of Key Skills
Babies with autism will have poor language skills and comprehension skills as they develop. They will make less eye contact with people and rarely interact with others. This symptom is generally observed between 9-12 months of age.
4. Repeated Behaviour or Movements
Babies with autism may display repeated movements and strange behaviour with no signs of learning new things. It should be a cause for concern when your baby exhibits such symptoms.
5. Headbanging
If your baby bangs his head on the wall, crib or even uses his fists to hit the wall in spite of being bruised, then you definitely have reason to worry. He may even shake his head violently during moments of anxiety or frequently for a long time.
6. Missing Developmental Milestones
If your baby does not reach the developmental milestones for his age on time, it could indicate that he is on the autism spectrum.
How to Stop Your Baby From Shaking His Head
Constant shaking of the head could cause drowsiness or dizziness in your baby. Follow these tips to get your baby to stop shaking his head:
1. Pay No Attention
Do not pay attention when he shakes his head, and show no reaction that can fuel him to do so further.
2. Track the Frequency and Duration
Time the moments and duration for which your baby shakes his head. Based on your findings, you’ll be able to figure out whether it’s a constant, recurring phenomenon that needs your attention or if it’s something you can ignore.
3. Alter the Environment
Sometimes, certain triggers in the environment around the baby can cause him to start shaking his head. Try to bring about a change to the environment where you notice your child doing this action the most. If that doesn’t work, it’s best to take him to a calm and stress-free place.
4. Try Relaxing Techniques
Relax your baby’s muscles with a soothing oil massage to calm his reflexes.
When to Consult a Doctor
If your child exhibits the following signs and symptoms along with shaking his head continuously, it’s best to get medical advice from a professional.
Doesn’t interact much with parents and siblings
Maintains poor eye contact and abnormal eye movement
Has bruises from headbanging
Shakes his head too much when he’s anxious
Displays an urge to hurt himself
Exhibits a poor response to sounds and voices
Exhibits this sort of abnormal behaviour even after crossing 2 years of age
Babies and toddlers often do weird things when they try to soothe themselves. When they are falling asleep it is not uncommon to see them banging their head, playing with their hair or yours, stroking their ears, belly, or private parts or even rocking themselves from side to side. Your baby moving his head from side to side rapidly is not strange and is normal. However, it is best to be safe than sorry. If you see your little one shaking his and exhibiting the other symptoms mentioned above, then consult a doctor. Otherwise, it's just another fun thing your little one will do for a while - till he finds something new to do!

This not only provides nutrition but also helps control diseases and various illnesses keeping a person healthy in every manner, which is why having avocados during pregnancy is something every pregnant woman thinks of as well.
Is Avocado Good for Pregnancy?
Avocados contain many essential nutrients such as potassium and folate. These elements play a vital role in the growth of the foetus and its proper development. Having avocado during the third trimester of pregnancy is highly preferred and safe, given a large number of vitamins and minerals they contain.
How Many Avocados Can You Eat in A Day?
The best thing about an avocado could end up being the worst thing about it if had in excess. Moderation is always the key since avocados contain all types of nutrients, minerals, and oils in varying quantities. It’s best to restrict yourself to half an avocado on a daily basis to avoid any side effects of it.
Health Benefits of Eating Avocado during Pregnancy
Some of the best health benefits of eating avocado while pregnant are,
1. Reduces Weight Gain Risks
Avocados contain substantial amounts of fibre that aid the digestion process as well as keep a check on weight gain. Fibre assists the good bacteria in the gut aiding metabolic digestive processes and keeping health in check. Having avocado juice during pregnancy is a great practice to adhere to if you are trying to avoid gaining unnecessary weight.
2. Assists Nutrient Absorption
Avocados themselves contain tons of nutrients, but what makes them different from other healthy fruits and vegetables is their tendency to assist the body in absorbing these nutrients. They do so by absorbing the same from existing food items in the body. In presence of leafy vegetables or sweet potatoes, avocados absorb the antioxidant carotenoids from them, which are then easily assimilated into the body.
3. Provides Important Minerals
Calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper, zinc, manganese, phosphorous, and tons of other minerals and vitamins are present in the avocado fruit. All of these are extremely crucial in providing the right nutrition for the mother as well as the growing foetus. And you get all of them from a single fruit.
4. Development Of The Baby’s Brain
One of the key components in ensuring proper brain development in the foetus is chlorine. This element is essential in developing a strong nervous system and a proper network of nerves throughout the body. A single serving of avocado has about 22mg of chlorine. This amount is enough to support the brain development process.
5. Relief From Leg Cramps
All pregnant women have suffered from leg cramps one time or the other. Most of the relief from leg cramping can be achieved by having a good constitution of potassium and calcium in the body. Avocado becomes a great choice in that accord with its substantial proportions of both minerals, leading to relief from cramps.
6. Maintaining Cholesterol And Sugar
A balanced diet coupled with some cravings can cause the levels of cholesterol and sugar in a pregnant mother to be off the required limits. By eating avocado, this can be actively mitigated since it works in keeping those levels in control and your health in check.
7. Reduced Morning Sickness
Every pregnant woman hopes to achieve some relief from constant nausea and fatigue that sets in after vomiting sensations in the early months. The vitamin C present in the avocados is helpful in combating this phenomenon.
8. Super Package Of Vitamins
With so many vitamins present in so many food items, keeping the diet balanced is a task in itself. Avocado simplifies it by literally having every vitamin present in it. Almost all the vitamins required for the mother’s well-being and the foetus’ growth are present in the avocado.
9. Reduces Anaemic Conditions
Pregnant women can easily get deficient in iron and it can be dangerous both for them and the child. The proportion of iron in avocado allows to normalize the iron levels in the body and reduce chances of anaemia.
10. Best Folic Acid Source
During foetal growth, any absence of essential elements such as folic acid can result in the foetus having defects and may give rise to abnormalities. Folic acid in the avocado is essential to support the healthy growth of the baby’s organs.

Risks Associated With Consuming Avocado While Pregnant
With all the nutrition and all the health benefits avocado has, there are certain times when consuming avocado can be risky for certain people.
On one hand, consumption of avocado helps keep the weight gain in check. However, if you already have quite a lot of fat content and are actively trying to reduce weight, it is recommended to take an even lesser amount of avocado than usually advised. Avocados contain a large number of calories from all the good fats they contain. Though they are good for health, in a scenario like this, can very easily lead to increased weight.
Certain mothers do have allergies to latex. In such cases, consumption of avocados and even bananas are forbidden. Research has shown latex allergies are triggered by these fruits.
Keeping the consumption moderate and balancing it out with other diet options is how you can mitigate most risks that may come your way through avocado.

2. Can I Eat Avocado During Third Trimester?
The third trimester is a stage in pregnancy where the foetus is still undergoing quite some growth throughout. The organs are speedily taking shape and the brain development is also steadily peaking. A lot of nutrients and minerals are required especially fibres, vitamin C and vitamin K. All of these are present in avocados in large amounts and are the perfect option for nutrition. Therefore, pregnant women are strongly advised to make avocados a part of their diet one way or another during their third trimester as well.
All foods that are healthy and contain good nutritive value should be a part of a pregnant woman’s diet. Avocados are no different. Eating them all in moderation and balancing them out without singularly focusing on any one of them makes it better for your health. In case of any allergies previously present or health issues previously observed, it is important to get your doctor’s go-ahead before you make it a part of your diet.

Interesting Facts About Aztecs for Kids
The Aztecs were the founders of the Aztec empire, a Mesoamerican civilization that spanned parts of modern-day Mexico and the surrounding areas. In North America, it was a seemingly invincible kingdom that existed for more than two centuries before being overthrown by the Spanish.
Over time, the Aztecs developed a rich and influential civilization that has left a lasting influence on the world that has endured to this day. Did you know that the Aztecs were responsible for the founding of an entire country? We have compiled a list of facts about Aztecs for kindergarten children.
Who Were The Aztecs?
The Aztecs were a tribe from northern Mexico who ruled a vast empire. They were one of the last indigenous civilizations in North America!
The Aztecs got their name from the term Aztlán, which means "White Land." This alludes to the land from which they originated, which was most likely in northern Mexico. They were also known as the Tenochca, from an ancestor named Tenoch, and the Mexica, to name a few names. Metzliapán ("Moon Lake"), the magical name for Lake Texcoco, where they established their capital, is most likely the source of the latter moniker.
They resided in Mexico before the conquest by the Spanish in the sixteenth century. Indeed, the term 'Aztec' translates as 'someone from an unknown location in Mexico.' The Aztecs were also known as Mehika or Mexica, the ancient name for 'Mexico.'
In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Aztec civilization flourished for about two hundred years. The Aztecs defeated their adversaries and promoted commerce and partnerships with other cultures. The monarch ruled the entire empire and commissioned artisans to construct towers for the gods. Farmers provided food for the populace, while warriors defended the kingdom against its adversaries.
How Did The Aztec Live?
The majority of Aztecs lived in dwellings constructed of mud and straw. Gardening would be their primary occupation outside. One would find a space for sleeping, cooking, and praying to the gods inside this structure. Wealthy individuals, on the other hand, resided in palaces or mansions constructed of stone or brick. They took advantage of the steam baths and saunas available here.
Due to the significant income disparity between rich and poor, many individuals had to work extremely hard to get by. Males were the primary breadwinners as warriors and farmers, while the women stayed home to cook and weave clothing for their families. Men generally wore capes, while women wore costumes made of fabric.
What are The Aztecs Best Known for?
Ever heard of Aztecs' agriculture and economics? The Aztecs were renowned for their agriculture, land, art, and architecture, among other achievements. Additionally, they learned to write and formed a calendar system, constructing temples and other sites of religious worship. They were also noted for being ferocious and ruthless in their behavior. They sacrificed victims to appease their gods!
However, they were also tremendously talented and imaginative in their own right. Their ingenuity assisted them in expanding their kingdom and defeating their adversaries.
How did The Aztec Children Live?
Parents cherished and cared for their children as if they were the essential thing in the world. When a child was born, it was celebrated with feasts and other festivities. When it came to their children, Aztec parents were severe and expected them to act specifically. Like their dads, boys were trained to hunt, farm, trade at markets, and fight, while females were taught to weave, cook and take care of the family, much as their mothers had done.
All Aztec children were required to attend school, much as they are now. It was directed by law! In contrast to many other countries at the time, females and slaves were also required to attend school. Boys and girls were taught distinctly. For example, boys would study hunting and farming, but girls would learn about cooking and taking care of the home.
Aztec children played with bows and arrows, dolls, and whistles, among other things. In addition, they had games such as patolli, a board game, and ullamaliztli, which was a ball game.
How did The Aztec People Build Their Empire?
The Aztec empire spanned 80,000 square miles in Central America, making it the largest in the world. Thousands of people served under their king.
Initially, the Aztecs were nomads, meaning that they moved around a lot and didn't stay in one spot for long periods. They had a simple way of life and were relatively impoverished. When they arrived in Tenochtitlán, they began to expand their territory. There was plenty of food and water available and accessible access to neighboring towns where they could trade.
Over time, they developed into fierce warriors who formed alliances with other individuals. This increased their political influence, and they could expand the empire by conquest of new territories.

These cuisines later became popular throughout the world.
