21 Months Old Baby Growth and Development
Your baby is still a few months short of turning two and yet may have covered many milestones and developed several new skills. He may be walking with more assurance, possibly running, hopping all over the house. He may be pushing and pulling his toys with ease, climbing stairs without much effort. In fact, by now he may have mastered the art of climbing which means he can scramble his way onto table tops, counters, chairs to reach for the object of his desire.
A toddler at 21 months is full of energy which seems to be inexhaustible. But his constant motion may be benefitting your toddler in building and strengthening his muscles, developing his cognitive and motor skills, sharpening his mind and then allowing him to sleep peacefully at the end of the day! Some aggressive behaviour in the form of tantrums, biting, hitting may also get manifested during this time. But most toddlers outgrow such behaviours as they grow up.
21 Month Old Toddler Development
Every child is an individual and can have varying developmental milestones. Some children may cover certain milestones sooner while others take time. It is best to allow every child to chart his progress at his own time and pace. A parent should not unnecessarily worry or hurry up their toddler if they feel he has not reached some of the perceived 21 months old baby milestones.
Physical Development
Your toddler at this stage may like to attempt different physical challenges every day. He may keep you on your toes as he explores his physical capabilities and discovers new exploits and possibly treats your house as his adventure playground. Some of the physical development of a 21 months toddler can be:
Your toddler may be walking and running about everywhere confidently.
He may be able to push around pieces of furniture or navigate around them without much difficulty.
He may have become an expert climber mounting on different surfaces and then climbing down with ease.
He may be able to climb stairs and get down too without much help.
Your toddler may also be learning to balance himself as well things well like bending over and then standing back again without losing balance.
He may be able to walk backwards, fling a ball overarm, kick a ball and help you with easy tasks about the house.
Social and Emotional Development
Toddlers may create a world of their own and want things to happen their way. They tend to seek attention and can be ruthless, restless and uncontrolled simply as a mean to test new behaviours. Few social and emotional development of a 21 months old toddler can be:
Your toddler may gain more self-assurance. He may be now slightly more comfortable being without you if you leave him in someone’s company.
Most toddlers start referring to themselves as “I” or by their names.
Your toddler may be willing to share his toys or things with others. He may begin to become more mindful of others.
Your toddler may be capable of recognizing familiar faces if you happen to show him a picture album.
Your toddler’s active imagination may give rise to certain fears in him like fear of water or insects.
Toddlers may like to assert their independence in situations which often lead to temper tantrums.
Cognitive and Language Development
Your toddler’s seemingly improving language skills may provide him with more confidence to communicate with others on his own. Some other cognitive and language developmental milestones can be:
Your toddler may be able to name many of his body parts with his increasing attention to detail.
Along with vertical lines, he may also make a good attempt at drawing circles and other shapes.
His growing consciousness of his senses may make him curious about how diverse things smell, taste, look, and sound.
Your toddler may now be able to sit and patiently go through a picture book or fit in a few pieces of a jigsaw puzzle by himself as his thinking and reasoning skills continue to develop.
He can understand simple instructions and can say simple phrases and use them to make short sentences.
Behaviour
Toddlers usually imitate grown-ups. You can help your child develop good manners by displaying good behaviour yourself. For example, if you want your kid to say “thank you” and “please” do use those words while talking to him and other people. Use more of positive affirmations than negatives while instructing your toddler. For instance instead of saying “Don’t hit the dog” say “Touch the dog softly”.
You can establish a few reasonable rules around the house. Your toddler may not follow all the rules. Consistently remind him. Rewarding the good behaviour of your child is always a good idea. It may encourage him to repeat his positive behaviour.
Toddler's Temper Tantrums
Many toddlers at 21 months often display intense mood swings, temper tantrums, repeated aggressive behaviour particularly if their actions may prompt an exciting response from adults. They may try to assert their will to test if they have enough power to do things as they like. In such situations, it is important to remain calm and instead of scolding him for his unacceptable behaviour consider using the situation to help guide your toddler towards positive behaviour. For example, instead of raising your voice, speak respectfully. Your toddler is more expected to listen when spoken quietly. Allow your toddler some time for his feelings of anger and frustration to pass away. Sometimes a hug can do wonders. Others may require a distraction of sorts like an interesting toy or activity. In case your toddler throws a tantrum in front of other people, take him to a quiet place and allow him time to vent out his anger till he calms down.
Food And Nutrition
In case your baby at 21 months is still on bottle feed you may consider taking steps to wean him off it. Make sure you make the transition slowly in stages. You may like to introduce your toddler to a kid sipper for his day feeds.
A 21-month-old baby food should ideally include all sorts of healthy veggies and fruits. But toddlers tend to be fussy eaters. Resist the temptation to force them to eat lest they develop an aversion to meal times. You can try and arouse their interest by involving them during the preparations of their meals. Being imaginative regarding the presentation of their meals may also help. Toddlers are likely to develop preferences for certain foods but try and constantly introduce them to different kinds of foods in small quantities. If your toddler seems reluctant to taste or dislike some food initially, keep offering him and he may eventually accept it.
Sleeping
Your toddler is likely to sleep less during the day. He may probably nap only once or twice throughout the day. Most of his sleep may happen at night now. Your toddler may display some resistance to falling asleep during bedtime. However, it is important to establish a bedtime routine for your toddler and more importantly stick to it. Your toddler may experience some separation anxiety during bedtimes which may disrupt his sleep. Moreover, some toddlers develop sleep regression around this age wherein a toddler who otherwise has been sleeping well may suddenly start experiencing recurrent night wakings. Yout toddler’s imaginative mind may trigger some bedtime fears in him like fear of the dark, monsters.
Play and Activities
It is essential that your toddler plays with age-appropriate toys that may not only be safe for him but also aid in his proper development. 21 months old baby activities may include toys that allow him to pretend like phones, trains, racing cars, toy food, toys that he can handle easily like playing blocks, plastic bricks and buildings, action toys like balls, tricycles, musical toys like xylophones, drums. You can get your toddler mini climbing frames or simply pile up a few cushions or create an obstacle course and let him have his fun. Your toddler may also find singing rhymes with actions, playing with crayons, finger play interesting enough.
Tips for Parents
Certain tips for parents about child’s health and development are listed below:
It is important to childproof your house and remove potential hazards to prevent any likely harm to your toddler.
Encourage him to brush his teeth regularly to reduce the likelihood of teeth decay.
Experts say that parents who speak clearly and frequently with their toddler without indulging in baby talk may help their toddler develop a large vocabulary and the chance to talk with clearness.
Set a routine for your toddler regarding his mealtimes, naptimes, bedtimes.
It is also a good time to introduce your child to swimming.
Consult a Doctor If?
It is always wise to follow your instinct when it comes to your child's health and safety. If you feel that something is not right, consult your doctor for guidance. In case your toddler is a fussy eater you can seek a dietician for advice. Some toddlers suffer from delayed speech. But 21 month old not talking is a worrisome situation which requires examination by a speech pathologist.
You toddler at 21 months old is like a little adventurer eager to explore various things while developing different skills in the process. Give your toddler ample love and support especially when you see him faltering or demonstrating aggressive behaviour. Enjoy this phase along with your baby wherein you get to relive your childhood once again!

Here's Some Help With Those Tough Leg Raises
Leg raises make your abs better and act on your back muscles too. These leg exercises for women if done the right way, will make you look and feel better than before. Safe and easy-to-perform, leg lifts are surely the way to hotness!
In line with your levels of physical fitness and intensity of workout, you may like to perform vertical lifts, legs lifts with the help of a ball, side leg lifts or hanging leg lifts. Along with giving you a stronger and well-toned body, these leg lift exercises leave you feeling fresh and your muscles less stressed than in other cases.
How to Do Leg Raises for Abs and Gams?
Now that you know what a leg lift exercise is, do go through the following steps to know how to perform the simplest of them all—vertical leg lifts.
Step 1
The proper way to do leg lifts is by lying down flat on your back with the legs outstretched. Keep your legs at a distance equivalent to a toe’s width. Also, ensure that you have your hands lying flat near your sides on the ground. Your palms should be facing downwards too.
These leg exercises for women are best done on an exercise or yoga mat for added comfort and support.
In case you are prone to back pains, you may like to roll up a soft towel and place it just a small way up your hips, just at the point where your back arches.
You can consider using a wooden bench that allows you to lower or lift your legs a little more.
Step 2
The correct way to do leg raises is to bend the knees. Keep your thighs perpendicular to the ground. Your calves have to be kept parallel to each other. At all times, your toes should be in the pointed position. Next, draw in your abdominal muscles towards your spine. Your shins need to remain parallel with your thighs perpendicular to your body. There should not be any gap between the floor and your lower back when you contract your abdominal muscles. Your face and eyes should face the ceiling. In case your neck and head are moving forward then lift your chin too.
Step 3
Now, you need to keep straightening your legs till you see your feet pointing directly to the ceiling. Your lower back should not arch off the ground, else you'll end up injuring yourself.
Step 4
Start lowering your legs while keeping your back pressed straight against the floor. Your goal should be to try reaching an inch away from the base. Keep your hands in the same position and use them to offer strength and support while lowering your legs. It’s important that you keep breathing normally.
Step 5
A smarter way of doing your raises is by counting till ten, both on the way up, and down. This increases the challenge for you too. To make things more exciting, you may want to raise your feet about 20 percent off the ground, hold for a second, and keep repeating until they are as high as you can manage. Then lower your legs down with the same increments in place.
With time amd practice, you can easily ace the leg raises. All the best! Read more

What’s a diaper bag and how to make it a “smart bag”
So if you are a first time parent or been an aunt and wondering what a diaper bag is - here is all you need to know about the diaper bag and it’s dos and don’t !
1- So what’s inside a diaper bag?
The diaper bag is nothing but mini home to your little one which includes obviously diapers and other essentials.Generally when you are headed out with your little one , you need certain essentials like
Diapers (the count depends for how long you will be out)
Wipes (keep a mini version of the big pack you generally use)
Changing mats(preferably disposable ones)
Garbage bags/disposable bags
Diaper rash cream
Feeding bottles
Formula / Regular Milk
Water bottles/sippers ,
1 set of change of clothes ( burps , Puke they are real and you don’t want to travel with that one for sure!)
Sanitisers and masks (additional mandatory requirement since 2020 :-)
Blanket
Snacks , bowl , spoon etc.
If there is room keep your essentials like wallet, an extra top at least & water bottle instead of carrying a handbag and a diaper bag! I know you would want to carry your handbag but since you have to manage your baby as well as manage the diaper bag- here 1 is better than 2 !Trust me it’s much convenient and easier to have one bag.
2- Do I need to buy a "diaper bag"?
The diaper bags available offer neatly organised pockets for keeping the various items making it handy when required. There are also unique features like changing ‘section’ as an extension but this can be used for not more than 3-4 months as they grow up so fast and won’t fit into it!
You can alternatively also use a traditional handbag like Tote or backpack and use a bag organiser to replicate the compartments which a diaper bag offers, this gives you freedom and variety to choose . Since a diaper bag is required to be used for at least 2-3 years when you travel with your little ones so the investment is purely your choice.
Buy a organiser here :

3- How many diaper bags should be there ?
Here you can use different variations depending on the time you will be out with your little one. Let’s see how you can do it.
A-Diaper bag for one hour or less errand.
If you are certain that your errand to the market or bank will be done in an hour or less then you can carry a pre made formula/milk bottle , water bottle of your baby & small pack of wipes inside you regular sling bag. Make sure you change the diaper right before you leave & have well fed the baby, so you have a worry free hour.
B- Diaper bag for 1-4 hours trip :
Here you can use a bag organiser inside a tote. If I have to go to a mall/ movie / or someone’s house , Would strongly recommend having one bag for yourself and the baby together as it’s easier to carry and manage. Stack 3-4 diapers , small pack of wipes, disposable changing mats, garbage bag (for discarding the soiled diaper), pre filled formula bottles , water bottle for making the formula milk, baby’s water bottle, sanitizer, at least one change of cloth of the baby and a extra top for self (you never know!).Baby food along with spoons or bowl can also be added if required
C-Diaper bag for long trips 4 hours plus travel time:
So for a long road trip/ air travel or long distance train travel , used a large backpack with a bag organiser or a diaper bag for keeping the milk bottles. If you use formula milk then pre fill the formula in the sterilised milk bottles as per the requirement and carry a water bottle to fill it when required. And if you use regular milk try using 200 ml tetra packs & open when the requirement comes. Having couple of pre filled ready made milk bottles will help you keep it handy when the need comes.
Also make 5-6 "diaper kits" with each kit being a transparent zip pouch containing a diaper, disposable changing mat , old page of newspaper (it eases disposing the soiled diaper) , garbage bag. So it’s easy to grab the kit along and 2 separate zip pouch each containing a small wipes and change of clothes for the baby. Also some food, bowl, spoons, toys of the little one are part of the bag.
For toddlers you can keep the foldable toilet seats , their favourite snacks , colours /toys for activities etc. that is mobile to carry and will keep the little ones occupied !
Lastly when you reach the place of the destination- no need of carrying the bulky diaper bag which you had on for hours during the travel. While going sightseeing and you know it won’t take longer than 4-5 hours or less then you can carry a sack pack and use your organiser to keep the diaper bag essentials.
You are the mother and it’s your diaper bag. Don’t keep anything that will make it bulky and won’t be required at all. Make sure you carry your essentials as well- you are a mother now which should not mean you should stop being you now :-)
Note : All the products mentioned above can easily be found on FirstCry.com under "Diapering and skin care "

4 Common Habits That Can Give Moms a Skin Rash
From conception till childbirth, your body is home to hormones raging wildly. There are umpteen changes going on in your system that don’t end on your delivery date. In fact, the postpartum phase is also a period of great change as your body slowly heals and recuperates. During this process, hormonal changes can sometimes trigger a common but painful skin condition – rashes.
This rash usually manifests itself in the form of itchy, scaly skin that could appear swollen and red. Some women also experience small, raised bumps on the lower abdomen and breasts – a condition called PUPPP.Though these rashes are not harmful for you or your baby in the long run, they sure can bring a lot of discomfort, not to forget itching! While postpartum rashes are fairly common and affect a large number of women for no apparent reason, there are a few habits that exacerbate them.Check out this list of habits that are easy to fall prey to but dangerous for your skin.
Taking Too Much Stress
This one seems like a given after you have just become a mother. Is it even possible to not be stressed? You will not be getting enough sleep, the baby will be frequently hungry and crying, and your hormones will make your moods swing wildly. However, being too stressed out causes your body’s cortisol (a stress hormone) levels to rise which can trigger skin breakouts. Enroll your spouse and family for help as much as you can. Try everything in your power to sneak in rest and sleep. You really need it!
Not Looking After Your Skin At All
Caring for your skin is really hard when you’re a new mom. In fact, it seems like a luxury you cannot afford. Many new moms ignore their skin for days at stretch, forgetting all about washing, scrubbing and moisturizing.Postpartum skin is already very vulnerable and this habit propels the occurrence of rashes. Make it a point to NEVER forget skincare.Every day, on freshly washed, clean skin, apply Himalaya FOR MOMS anti-rash cream. This is specially formulated using a concoction of herbs and clinically tested for efficacy on postpartum skin. Since the composition is completely natural, be rest assured that it’s without any side effects for you and your baby.
Not Eating a Balanced Diet
Another bodily change that happens during pregnancy is that your immune system gets slightly suppressed. This is to limit your body’s reaction to the baby. In the postpartum stage too, your body is susceptible to developing a new allergy.Food-based allergies are especially common in the period after delivery. Some of these can set off a nasty rash if you are not careful about your diet.If you have a history of allergy, get into a consultation with your doctor and figure out the foods you should stay away from.
Dehydrating Yourself and Your Skin
During your pregnancy, your body has estrogen and progesterone surging in your veins – hormones that contribute to keeping your skin hydrated and supple. But after delivery, there is a sharp drop in the level of these hormones. The result? Your skin’s capacity to retain water comes down. This leaves it dry, inelastic and less supple. The likelihood of developing rashes also goes up exponentially.Plus, since you’re very busy at this time, you may not be drinking enough water or giving your skin the extra hydration it needs. One quick fix is to use a body butter by Himalaya .It is available in the flavours of rose, lavender and jasmine and has nourishing properties to gradually restore your skin’s suppleness.
Remember this, moms: understanding the root cause of a problem is the first step toward dealing with it. Looking after your skin is important not just for your comfort and confidence but also for your baby. The little one loves touching and feeling your skin and you have a responsibility toward humouring his demand!
