Period After Abortion - Symptoms, Changes and Self-care Tips
Some women may feel a little anxious thinking about their next period after an abortion. The recovery process may be different for every woman as it depends on factors like how their bodies cope with the abortion, how well they look after their health after the abortion, and how far their pregnancy had progressed before the abortion.
But it is important to understand the difference between post-abortion bleeding and the start of regular periods after the procedure. In case of surgical abortion, bleeding after the procedure is normal, but it should not be mistaken for menstruation.
Moreover, abortions that occur in the second trimester of pregnancy may pose health issues both physically and mentally. On the whole, most women usually experience irregular or delayed periods after an abortion.
Medical Abortion vs Surgical Abortion
What is the difference between surgical and medical abortion? We have the answers for you.
Surgical Abortion
Medical Abortion
· A procedure where the doctor uses a suction to empty the uterus
· A procedure involving a combination of medications that help shed the lining of the uterus
· Can be done till up to 14 weeks since the start of your last period
· Can be done till up to 9 weeks since the start of your last period
· Usually requires one visit for the procedure
· Usually requires more than one visit for the procedure
· 98% affective
· 95-97% affective
· You may experience mild cramps
· You may experience strong cramping and nausea
Surgical abortions are generally safer and more effective than medical abortions. Medical abortions also aren’t for the faint of heart; they can cause heavy bleeding and unpleasant side-effects that might last a while. Your doctor should be able to give you the right advice on which way to go.
When Do Periods Start After an Abortion?
After the abortion, some bleeding for 2 to 6 weeks is considered normal. Post-abortion bleeding is normally heavier in the beginning but becomes lighter eventually. After the recovery bleeding has reduced, the body starts preparing for the first period after the abortion which can take several weeks.
Women who have an abortion during the first trimester of their pregnancy are likely to get their first period after the abortion within 4 to 8 weeks. However, in case the recovery bleeding has extended beyond 8 weeks and your period has not started, contact your doctor.
It is also important to keep in mind that even after the abortion the pregnancy hormone levels in the body may be high, which can cause changes in the menstrual cycle. Also, having an abortion does not affect fertility. So in case of unprotected sex after an abortion, you can get pregnant again.
Things to Remember About Bleeding After Surgical/Medical Abortion
Here are some important things to remember about bleeding after getting an abortion:
After a surgical abortion procedure, it is normal to experience heavy bleeding, no bleeding or erratic bleeding for several weeks.
After getting an abortion via a medical procedure, heavier bleeding than a surgical abortion is considered normal.
You may pass some tissues while bleeding, and this usually lasts for a couple of days.
It may take some time for your regular period to start. Your body may be taking more time to heal from the abortion process or to expel the pregnancy hormones from your body. You may also have a delayed period if you are suffering from stress and depression.
Changes in the Menstrual Cycle After an Abortion
There may be certain changes in your menstrual cycle after an abortion, and they are:
1. Change in the Flow
If you have gotten an abortion through a surgical process, your first period may have a ligher flow. It also may last only for a few days, unlike your normal period. But in case you experience heavy bleeding that continues unusually for days together, contact your doctor. If your abortion was done through medical means, you may experience a heavy period.
2. Some New Symptoms
You may find that your periods after the abortion are unlike your regular periods. You may now experience painful cramping, large blood clots or some pregnancy symptoms like a lower backache, swollen breasts, and fatigue. These changes are likely to last for a few menstruation cycles.
3. Irregular Periods
After an abortion, you will most likely experience irregularities while menstruating. For example, you may notice light bleeding 2 weeks after your period. The abnormalities can occur due to the presence of pregnancy hormones in the body.
What If You Have an Abnormal Period?
The sudden termination of the pregnancy can confuse your body, and it may take some time to get rid of the pregnancy hormones and come back to its regular cycle. The presence of pregnancy hormones in the body can bring about certain changes or delays in the menstruation cycle or cause irregular periods after abortion.
During the first period after your abortion, heavy or light bleeding may occur depending on the type of abortion you have had, accompanied by blood clots and cramping. It is the body’s way of ejecting all the remaining tissues and products of pregnancy. You may experience this for the next few menstruation cycles.
Medication for Menstrual Cramping
Your doctor may suggest over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen, acetaminophen or naproxen for mild menstrual cramping. Taking these medicines as soon as cramping or bleeding starts may prove to be useful. Putting a hot bottle wrapped in a towel or a heating pad on your lower back or stomach may bring relief from the pain. You can also try propping up your feet or consider taking birth control pills, but do so only after consulting the doctor.
Tips for Self-care Post Abortion
Abortion can take a toll on a woman, both physically and mentally. Therefore, it is vital to take care of one’s health after an abortion for complete recovery. Some helpful tips are listed below:
Take adequate rest and maintain a healthy diet.
Turn to your family and friends for emotional support o to deal with the situation.
Avoid unprotected intercourse with your partner.
Ensure regular check-ups and follow-up care with your doctor.
Avoid lifting of heavy objects.
Do not indulge in heavy exercise for a while.
When to Call Your Doctor?
It is advisable to contact your doctor if you happen to experience excessive bleeding - soaking up to two pads or more in an hour - or large blood clots along with painful cramping. In case you pass tissues with painful cramping, experience foul-smelling vaginal discharge or run high temperatures, you might require medical intervention. Some women may experience late periods after having an abortion. However, if there is no sign of periods post abortion, it may be a cause for concern. Also, recovery bleeding post yourabortion that goes up to 8 weeks or more will need medical attention. It can also happen that some women may get their first period but skip their second period after the abortion. In that case, they may want to get a pregnancy test done or consult a doctor.
It is normal to experience some deviations while menstruating after an abortion. Nevertheless, in case of any doubt, it is always advisable to consult a doctor for necessary guidance and timely treatment. Not worrying unnecessarily and remaining stress-free along with taking good rest and eating healthy will go a long way in helping your body to recover from the trauma of abortion.

Parents, Keep These Winter Essentials Handy Before It Gets Cold
No matter how much adults enjoy the cold season, winter is no cakewalk for newborns. When it comes to newborns and toddlers, the stakes get high. Since they are vulnerable to seasonal changes, it becomes important for parents to go the extra mile to keep their babies protected from harsh winter.
Babies are easily susceptible to several winter ailments like cough and cold. But, worry not. We can assure you that keeping these basic winters essentials handy will help your little one tackle mild winter ailments and make your visits to the doctor less frequent.
9 Important Winter Must-Haves for Babies and Toddlers
Low temperatures, dry air, and cold breeze are common in winter. As a parent, you can stay prepared with these nine winter essentials to protect your baby from winter ailments. Without any further ado, let’s dive in!
1. Thermometers
Infrequent temperature can quickly trigger viral infections, runny noses, and fevers in babies. If you have a baby below the age of 5, we recommend keeping a good-quality thermometer in your medicine cabinet. Rectal or oral thermometers are commonly used thermometers that often provide accurate readings. A thermometer will not only give you temperature readings right away but will also help in detecting symptoms earlier and treating them before they could get any worse.
2. Nasal Aspirators
Mucus often finds an easy way into a baby’s nose during winters and can lead to sleepless nights. A nasal aspirator is a recommended item for your medicine pantry if your baby suffers from congestion. It will help in removing the blockage and allow easy breathing. If you have any doubt, do consult your baby’s paediatrician before using this product.
3. Cold Relief Balms
Nights get colder than days in winters, which can cause an untimely blocked nose and cough in your baby. Keeping cold relief balms like doctor-prescribed menthol balms helps whenever the temperature drops. You can rub some balm on your child’s chest and back right before you tuck him in the bed. It will provide him relief from the congestion and contribute to sound sleep.
There are several cold relief balms available but make sure your buy one that is suitable for babies or prescribed by a doctor.
4. Medicine Droppers
Giving medicine to little babies can be an extremely difficult task. Since they can’t swallow tablets and usually mess up taking liquid medicine by spilling it all over them, a medicine dropper aids in saving time and effort. The simple design of a medicine dropper helps parents to measure the required dose for their babies accurately and creates no mess or waste. Hence, it is a must-have item in your medicine cabinet.
5. Anti-Colic Tummy Roll-on
Babies cry a lot whenever they suffer from indigestion, gastric problems, constipation, or colic. If you plan to travel with your baby or if he suffers from frequent gas pains, you may want to consider keeping an anti-colic tummy roll-on with you. It soothes stomach pain and provides relief from bloating. The tummy roll-ons are very travel-friendly and can be easily carried in bags or purses.
6. Cotton Buds and Pads
A baby’s skin is still in the development phase and very delicate. With the arrival of the winter season, the soft skin of babies starts to get dry and chapped. Now because it is the cold season, you would not want to clean up your baby with water every time, as he might catch a cold. Thus, cotton buds or pads that are made with 100% cotton can be used to clean in between your tiny tot’s fingers, toes, the outer ear, and other delicate creases. You can look for cotton buds made of paper sticks instead of plastic and those that have 100% cotton tips.
7. Vaporisers
Cold temperatures, recirculated dry air, and lack of humidity in the atmosphere can cause many winter ailments, like cough, congestion, and sore throat in your baby. In this case, a vaporiser is a great item for increasing the humidity of the air. It works by turning the water into steam, humidifying the air, and helping in alleviating the cold. The moist air created by a vaporiser can help the mucus to loosen up and open up your child’s blocked nose and help him breathe easily.
8. Nebulisers
A nebuliser is another great must-have for this winter. It is often recommended by a doctor if a child has swollen airways, lung infection, or respiratory diseases, like asthma and cystic fibrosis. It works by infusing medicine into the water and offering pressurised air into the lungs of the baby through the liquid. You can get in touch with your baby’s paediatrician to know more about this and if it is necessary for your kid.
9. Pulse Oximeters
The drop in the temperature during the winter season can decrease the oxygen level in babies suffering from respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Hence, it is important to keep pulse oximeters handy and check for your baby’s pulse whenever he suffers from fever or cold. It effectively monitors the oxygen saturation level in the blood and helps in detecting the immediate risk like sleeping accidents and SIDS. A consultation with your baby’s paediatrician before purchasing the pulse oximeter will be beneficial.
All these above-mentioned items are certain to make you and your baby’s winter season go smoothly. It is also important to buy products that are renowned for their high-quality standards and maintain proper hygiene before and while using these items. Now that you know more about what to stock up for your baby’s wellbeing, we are sure you will be ready to combat this chilly winter season.

Things To Know About Over Eating Of Sugar During Pregnancy
We know the cravings are on an all-time high. Indulge if you really have to once in a while but also educate yourself on the effects of excess sugar during your pregnancy.
Pregnancy is such a fragile time even with all the excitement of having a baby soon. Your diet, your sleep patterns, and your activity have to be carefully planned and monitored so that your growing baby gets the best possible care till he enters this world. While you can manage to squeeze in light workouts, relax enough to sleep on time, diet seems to be the most challenging of all.
Even if it does seem doable to control your diet for 9 months, you’re hit by cravings that cannot be ignored! What’s a girl to do then? You may plan to have 2-3 servings of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and include enough folate to your diet but crave a big chocolate cake instead.
While it is alright to indulge once in a while, overeating sugar in pregnancy may not be good for your baby. It may put you at a risk of gestational diabetes and also could potentially cause an unhealthy affinity for sugary foods in your child at a future stage.
How much is too much though? Let’s find out everything you need to know about eating sugar during pregnancy.
What Amount Of Sugar Can Be Safely Consumed During Pregnancy
While there are no standardised recommendations for the amount of sugar to be consumed during pregnancy, it is best to consume it with caution. The amount of sugar you can safely consume during pregnancy depends on your blood sugar levels, your weight and your metabolic rate. Either way, it is best not to exceed 25 gms of sugar during pregnancy in one day.
Side Effects Of Excess Sugar Consumption
Even when not pregnant, overconsumption of sugar-rich foods and carbohydrates affect your health negatively. During pregnancy, this could affect you and also the baby adversely. Excess sugar can travel through the placenta to the baby and increases the baby’s blood sugar levels too. This will in turn lead to excess production of insulin the baby’s body and can lead to baby being born larger than normal.
Delivering a baby too large can lead to delivery issues and necessary c-sections. It could also lead to a premature birth.
Reasons To Avoid Excess Sugar During Pregnancy
We’ve already discussed the possible side effects of overconsumption of sugar in pregnancy but there are more reasons to avoid sugar in excess. Here’s what sugar during pregnancy does to you
1. It Causes Lethargy and Fatigue
Sugar and sugar laden foods provide empty calories and no nutrition. The only energy spike you may feel is from the burst of sucrose that hits your blood steam but then rapidly drops as well. This leaves you feeling lethargic and low on energy.
2. It Causes Weight Gain
The fact that excess sugar causes weight gain is a common one. During pregnancy your body naturally gains weight to support the growing baby. This natural weight gain coupled with excess sugar can lead to obesity and birth complications.
3. It Could Lead Grade 1 Fatty Liver
A pregnancy diet with a high count of sugar can lead to acute fatty liver syndrome. It can also hamper the fetus’ metabolic rate and lead to obesity in the future. It also puts the baby at a risk of type 2 diabetes in the future.
4. It Aggravates Pregnancy Symptoms
Common pregnancy symptoms like nausea, vomiting, mood swings and heartburn get even more intense when sugar is consumed in excess.
5. It Increases the Risk of Preeclampsia
The higher the sugar intake of the pregnant woman, the more the risk of preeclampsia.
6. It Can Make Your Baby Crave More Sugar
Your baby’s taste buds can permanently be affected by your overconsumption of sugar during pregnancy. Once grown, the child may excessively crave for sugary foods and this might lead to diabetes and obesity early in life.
7. It could lead to nutritional deficiency
While cravings are completely normal during pregnancy, if you crave more sweets than wholesome foods, you might suffer deficiency of actual nutrients you may need.
8. It is linked to autism
The exposure of the uterus to to high blood sugar could affect the brain development of the baby. This would increase the chances of developmental disorders.
Tips To Reduce Sugar Consumption in Pregnancy
To avoid the risk of the above mentioned complications, here are some tips to reduce sugar cravings and consumption during pregnancy:
1. Include more fruits
One way to satisfy sweet cravings is to eat sweeter fruits like mangoes, pineapples and strawberries. Try and limit fruit juices as they contain more sugar than fiber.
2. Limit processed sugar in snacks
Refined sugar needs to be avoided during pregnancy altogether. However, if you’re finding that hard to do, try and cut down on ice-creams, cakes and pastries and other dessert items that contain too much sugar.
3. Read labels on packed foods carefully
Check for the hidden sugar in packaged items that you eat like ketchup, peanut butter, cereal, etc. Pick ones that have a lower sugar content.
4. Keep junk food out of reach
Keeping junk food around the house is tempting and may cause unnecessary snacking. Buy them only when you crave them badly.
5. Ditch artificial sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners are harmful to the body in the long run so opt more kinder alternatives like honey, jaggery or palm sugar.
6. Limit if not avoid
If you cannot ditch sugar completely, limit the intake during pregnancy. Have one teaspoon instead of two with your cup of tea.

Is IVF a Good Option for Women With Endometriosis?
In today’s time, more and more women are getting affected by endometriosis. It occurs when the uterus lining (known as the endometrium) grows outside the uterus, resulting in scar tissue and adhesion. This condition destroys the tissues and distorts the organs, causing dysfunction of reproductive organs which leads to infertility. It is a condition in which women experience severe cramping in the pelvic region, excessive blood flow during the cycle, and most importantly, it prevents women from conceiving. This is when IVF treatment may be administered to help the person to conceive. The article highlights the effects of endometriosis on fertility and how IVF can help to combat infertility in women with the condition.
How Does Endometriosis Affect Fertility?
Although not everyone who has endometriosis has a problem in conceiving, it can be a cause of infertility in some women. It depends mainly on the severity of the condition. However, it has been seen that the monthly fecundity rate (chances of conceiving) in women without the condition is 15% - 20% which is much higher than that of women who have endometriosis whose monthly fecundity rate is anywhere in between 2% - 10%.
The exact reason for infertility in women with endometriosis, however, is not certain. Anyone or more of the below-mentioned factors can be a cause for failure to conceive.
1. Blocked Fallopian Tubes
The deposits caused by endometriosis block the Fallopian tubes through which fertilised eggs travel to the uterus. This prevents fertilisation from taking place, and as such, it is not possible to conceive.
2. Chocolate Cysts
Endometriomas or the benign ovarian growths which are also known as chocolate cysts can destroy the eggs in the ovary and prevent ovulation. The chocolate cysts that contain old blood which have a thick, tar-like consistency may also develop along the Fallopian tube which obstructs a fertilised egg to travel to the uterus, thereby preventing conception.
3. Endometriotic Deposits in the Pelvis
It is not certain why, but even in less severe cases of endometriosis when the ovulation is normal, and there are no blockages due to endometrial deposits, infertility may occur. According to research, when the condition of endometriosis is present in the system, either the endometrial cells or the immune system give out bio-chemical substances like prostaglandins which prevent a person from conceiving.
4. Scarring of Tissues
Scarring tissues due to endometriosis can make organs including the reproductive organs stick to one another and distort them. This prevents the organs from functioning properly, and as such, it becomes difficult to conceive.
5. Causes Inflammation
Endometriosis may also cause inflammation in the organs, preventing the entire reproductive process from taking place. Inflammation has been observed to affect egg production and ovulation too. The quality and quantity of eggs (ovarian reserve) in endometriosis patients dips low. Moreover, it has been seen that the uterus of women suffering from endometriosis works differently. The implantation rate is much lower, and the chances of miscarriage are on the higher side.
Endometriosis and IVF Treatment
Endometriosis is usually treated by laparoscopy surgery or hormonal treatments; in severe cases, hysterectomy is carried out which includes the removal of the ovaries, cervix and uterus. As for increasing the chances of getting pregnant while suffering from endometriosis, IVF can be a good way of treating the condition. It has been observed that IVF treatment improves the chances of conception. In case of severe endometriosis, the IVF success rate is low. IVF treatment is considered to be the best option and is just as good as other IVF patients who do not suffer from the condition. However, some people believe IVF treatment on patients with endometriosis can cause the condition to aggravate. Due to the doses of oestrogen during the IVF procedure, endometriosis symptoms can flare up, causing grave health issues. This is because when a lot of hormones are injected into the body, it causes inflammation in the tissues. However, such severe cases are rare.
Another question that is most common among IVF patients with endometriosis is, does endometriosis affect implantation in IVF? Although IVF is considered to be the best option to treat infertility in women with endometriosis, the chances of implantation will be slightly less in women with the condition than women without it. However, it has been observed that there isn’t much of a difference in the implantation rates in women with endometriosis and women without it.
IVF treatment has been tried and tested by many women with endometriosis around the globe, and the results have been fantastic. However, the best way to overcome the condition would be to consult and take opinions of a good reproductive endocrinologist and be open to experimenting with different IVF alternative treatments. Most importantly, be patient and positive!

Read more
