When do Babies Make Eye Contact and How Parents Can Encourage
Each stage of development in babies is a euphoric moment for the parents. Be it the cute smile that plays on their lips when they are trying to amuse them or the moment when babies utter their first word, these milestones are truly treasurable for every parent.
Making eye contact is another milestone which makes the bond between parents and babies even stronger. Usually, all babies learn the skill of making eye contact more or less in a similar span. However, it might be little early or late in some cases, but that does not impact the overall development of babies.
When do Babies Start Making Eye Contact?
Every parent is eager to know that how old are when they babies start making eye contact? To those who are seeking the answer, more often, babies make their first direct eye contact during their first 6 to 8 weeks of age.
Why is Eye Contact Important?
Simply put, eye contact lets parents know that they are being recognised by their child. Moreover, it plays an important role in the emotional and intellectual development of babies, regardless to say the early bonding and attachment which gets even stronger once the babies start to make eye contact. Eye gazing also helps in gathering and analyzing information. When a baby sees his parents, he starts to relate to voices and persons, understand what a smile means and what it means to be loved.
Eye Gaze Development in Infants
In infants, eye gaze development takes place as explained below:
Usually, babies start to take a substantial interest in their mother’s face within 7 hours after they step into this world. Moreover, they also tend to imitate the facial expressions made by their mother or caregiver.
During first 6-8 weeks after their birth, a baby starts to intentionally direct his eyes at the mother or caregiver.
At around the age of 3 months, a baby is capable of following the movements of the mother or caregiver.
By the time they are 9 to 11 months of age, they master the ability to follow the actual eye gaze of an adult. At this point, they understand that what eyes are for i.e., to look and see. In some babies, this development might take a little longer so don’t panic if your baby is taking his time.
How can Parents Help their Baby to Make Eye Contact?
Eye contact between babies and their parents is a natural and cherishable moment. However, each baby has their own pace, tendencies, and needs. Hence, it’s important for a parent to understand these aspects and act accordingly. Below are few tips for parents to help their babies to make eye contact.
Your baby is still at the developing stage and will tend to have very short eye gaze. So don’t expect him to hold a long and intense gaze.
Be gentle when you are trying to encourage your baby to make eye contact. You can’t have him make eye contact when he is in a bad mood or is hungry; he won’t be able to focus. Instead, try encouraging him when he is calm and content.
Another way to encourage him to make eye contact is by holding him at about 10-20 inches away from your face.
If your baby is gazing at you out of his own volition, then take advantage of such opportunities. In this case, you may try singing, making faces, talking, etc. to him. You might feel awkward at first, but all of these get stored in your baby’s mind, and it will constructively impact his development.
It is recommended to wait for the baby to look at his caregiver and then initiate an interaction. Ensure that you don’t look away before does.
A mutual eye contact accompanied by touch or voice is more helpful to establish a harmonious bond between a parent and a baby.
Pointing at an object or toy and naming it will also be helpful which will also aid in their language development.
Don’t be disheartened if your baby is looking away from your face. It might be purely because he is tired of looking at you for the time being. Hence, understand his mood and allow him some space.
Activities that can Help Infants to Make Eye Contact
To help the baby develop his eye contact better, it’s recommended to take the baby to a doctor of optometry. Between the age of 6 and 12 months, the baby has to through his first eye examination. This is to make sure that the baby has no problems with his eyesight to begin with, such as farsightedness, astigmatism, nearsightedness etc., If any problem is found (which is a rare case) then the baby has to keep visiting the doctor for regular eye checkups for a minimum age of 3.
To help the baby improve his eye moments and therein improving his eye contact, small activities can be undertaken by the parent.
In the first 4 months, let the baby follow moving objects with his eyes and learn to reach out for things he finds attractive. This is to establish a solid eye-hand coordination in the baby.
Other activities that can help in making the baby develop his eye contact are through changing his crib’s position regularly and by changing the baby’s position in it. You could also hand an object above and outside the crib to let the baby follow it’s movement.
You could also try keeping some toys within the reach of the baby and at about 8 to 12 inches of the baby’s focus.
While feeding the baby, keep alternating the sides. Also, keep communicating with the baby whenever you are in the room. The sound can act as an catalyst for the baby’s attempt at eye contact.
Why do Babies Avoid Eye Contact?
It is important to remember that in their beginning months, babies can only focus up to 30 centimetres, which is ideally the distance at which they see a parent’s face when are being cradled or fed. They tend to not look anywhere other than this area.
If the baby is overstimulated by visual stimulus, then they tend to not have any eye contact and refuse to look altogether. At such cases, it is necessary to know how much eye contact is normal for babies. In such cases, let the baby calm down. Let him rest his eyes, by taking a nap and by not forcing it to have eye contact.
The baby might have perhaps gazed too long at one spot and then get shy of gazing for too long. Such babies refuse to have eye contact for some time as well.
Some babies tend to switch off for a particular period of time - it could be months or weeks where they refuse to have any eye contact. However, this is normal as babies tend to get excited and tired easily. They will gradually learn to maintain eye contact.
Unwillingness to develop and maintain eye contact is usually an early sign for autism. If the baby pursues to not develop eye contact even after 6 months, then a doctor has to be consulted immediately.
Other complications may also lead to refusal of maintaining eye contact. If the problem persists, visit a doctor at the earliest and take necessary steps.
It is often difficult to predict whether the baby really has any problem when it refuses to maintain eye contact. However, rather than panicking, it is recommended to deal with patience. Gradually you learn to understand your baby and develop a good relationship with them.

Sneezing in Pregnancy - Causes, Effects and Treatment
Sneezing during pregnancy is common and normal. Although it is troublesome, there is nothing to be worried about. According to doctors, this condition is called pregnancy rhinitis. During pregnancy everything becomes very sensitive including your nasal passage and your respiratory system. You could get allergic to things around you which when you were not pregnant probably did not matter much. The increase in the volume of blood can trigger swelling of the capillaries in your nose which results in the congested nasal passage. Moreover, the pregnancy hormones can cause more mucus production which can also aggravate a “cold-like” condition resulting in nasal congestion, sniffles, and continuous sneezing.
Is Sneezing Harmful during Pregnancy?
Every women’s’ immune system faces an all-time low during pregnancy. Low immunity causes an increase in sensitivity which results in allergic reactions which may cause inflammation in the nasal passage, throat and respiratory system along with the other parts of the body. However, although continuous sneezing during pregnancy or when not pregnant can be troublesome and tiring, it is not harmful.
What Causes Sneezing in Pregnancy?
Cold, sniffling and sneezing go hand in hand during pregnancy. There are many reasons for it.
Pregnancy rhinitis is one of the reasons behind the cold and sneezing during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the volume of blood increases making the blood capillaries swell up in the nose and the increase in mucus production makes the nasal passage swell resulting in sniffles, nose congestion and inflammation in the nasal passage and respiratory system.
Pregnancy brings along a lot of health issues. The common cold is one of them. This is caused due to a weak immune system during pregnancy which makes the body incompetent to fight against a cough and cold.
Allergies are another reason for cold and sneezing in women during pregnancy. Women who suffer from allergies before pregnancy continue suffering even during their pregnancy. In fact allergies in such women may aggravate even more when they are pregnant.
Why does Sneezing hurt during Pregnancy?
The pain when sneezing while pregnant is chiefly due to the stretch in the round ligament that connects the groin to the front of the uterus. It is one of the ligaments that support and surround the uterus. When a pregnant woman sneezes, the round ligament tightens quickly as a counter-reaction to the sudden movement. This causes a sharp pain which is common and nothing to be worried about.
However, in some rare cases, the pain while sneezing during pregnancy can be due to some underlying health condition like a cyst. Pregnant women who suffer from sciatica or pain in the pelvic girdle may also experience a sharp pain while sneezing.
Does Sneezing Affect the Pregnant Mother and her Baby?
Sneezing during pregnancy is due to the inflammation of the mucous membranes. The inflammation causes irritation resulting in continuous sneezing, cold-like symptoms, and coughing. If it is not accompanied by body ache and fever, it may just be a case of pregnancy rhinitis which usually starts around the 8th week of pregnancy.
Sneezing during pregnancy can be termed as safe for the mother as well as the baby in the womb. It usually disappears in a couple of weeks after the delivery. Although it is absolutely normal and nothing to be worried about, in some rare cases it can trigger back pain, stiffness in the jaw and injury in the respiratory tract. The baby, however, is very well protected in the womb. She may feel like being rocked when her mother sneezes which comforts her inside the womb all the more.
Urine Leakage due to Sneezing during Pregnancy
Urine leakage is a very common thing when one sneezes while pregnant. This happens due to the growing uterus which rests on top of the bladder and gets pressed every time a pregnant woman sneezes. This may be embarrassing as well as uncomfortable for most. There is very little that one can do about it. However, practising Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles may help to stop it. One may even use panty liners to prevent the panty from getting wet time and again.
How should you Deal with Sneezing?
Sneezing is troublesome at all times. A person suffering from it can get tired and feel drained out on account of continuous sneezing. Therefore, finding ways to combat it is necessary. Listed below are some of the ways to treat it.
1. Medical Treatments
To treat sneezing in pregnant women can be quite a task because a pregnant woman cannot take all types of medicines. However, a doctor when consulted may prescribe the following.
Analgesics are found in cold medications acetaminophen, ibuprofen and acetylsalicylic. Ibuprofen and Acetylsalicylic are non-steroidal and used in treating inflammation. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen if taken in early pregnancy does not cause any complications or risk of birth defects in the baby. However, Acetylsalicylic acid has been seen to cause complications and adverse effects in newborns.
Antihistamines are prescribed to cure inflammation and allergies.
2. Natural Treatments
During pregnancy, it is best to try out natural remedies before taking any kind of allopathy medication. Here is a list of some natural home remedies that one could try to cure sneezing during pregnancy.
Taking steam inhalation using either peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil will give relief from sneezing caused due to congestion in the nasal passage. It helps in clearing the nasal passage.
Boil some water and add 2 tsp. of roughly crushed fennel seeds and put a lid. After about 15 minutes, strain the liquid and drink it. You should drink 2 cups of this liquid daily. Fennel which is loaded with antibodies and antiviral components is helpful in curing all types of upper respiratory infection and that includes sneezing too.
You can make soups and salads having black pepper or drink lukewarm water mixed with one tbsp of pepper powder 2-3 times a day. Gargling with warm water mixed with pepper powder also helps in controlling cold and sneezing.
Chamomile tea which has antihistamine properties is a great way to cure sneezing caused by allergies.
Ginger is the most sought-after thing in Indian kitchens due to its medicinal properties. Boil water in which roughly crushed raw ginger has been added and on cooling add a spoonful of honey. Drinking a cup of this before going to sleep at night will stop sneezing at night.
Eating garlic raw or cooked helps in combating infection. You can also crush some cloves of garlic and inhale it. This help in opening up the nasal congestion by reducing the inflammation inside.
When should you Consult a Doctor?
Continuous sneezing during pregnancy is quite bothersome, but sneezing should not cause any worry. However, if you have the following symptoms along with sneezing, call for your doctor immediately.
You are experiencing respiratory problems and chest pain as well.
You are down with a temperature which is more than 100 degrees.
You have loss of appetite.
You are unable to sleep.
You are wheezing while speaking or breathing.
The colour of the mucus that you are coughing up is either yellow or green in colour.
How to Prevent Sneezing during Pregnancy?
Sneezing during pregnancy in the first trimester is most common because that is when your body is very low on immunity. Sneezing in pregnancy in the second trimester causes sharp round ligament pain while the sharp shooting pain while sneezing in pregnancy in the third trimester gradually seems to disappear. Urination while sneezing is also one of the uncomfortable situations that pregnant women face due to the growing of the uterus. However, listed below are few ways in which sneezing during pregnancy can be prevented.
Using a neti pot, you can clear the nasal passage. However, this Ayurvedic practice requires time to master.
Using a humidifier at night can help in adding moisture to the dry air especially during winter.
An air purifier is most helpful when people suffer from environmental allergies like dust, pollen or mould.
Taking in saline water can help in clearing your nasal passage and the salt in it can help in reducing the inflammation in the nasal passage.
Avoiding things that may aggravate allergy can prevent sneezing.
Taking Vitamin C rich fruits like kiwi, citrus fruits etc can help to combat cold and cough.
Consult a doctor and ask him about what can be done to cure your allergy/cold.
Sneezing is due to an infection in the upper respiratory tract. It is caused by viruses and usually there is nothing to be worried about but at times, the infection could spread to the other parts of the body resulting in bacterial infections. Therefore, care should be taken to avoid it.

Mummy Mujhe School Nai Jana.. A Short Story on Child’s FIrst Day in School
Priyanshi, who has just turned two and a half today, was beautifully dressed up in a pink frilly frock by Sukriti, her Mum; for her first day in Playschool. She bought her beautiful frantic velvet pink colour nursery bag with elephant face design,a Doraemon water bottle of bluish purple colour,a lovely kitty tiffin box and a yellow banana box,as she was fond of eating yummy bananas so much!
Sukriti got up early in the morning and prepared vegetable cutlets to pack in Priyanshi’s tiffin box.She was feeling a bit nervous, as Priyanshi was the only child in 10years of her marriage.Shashank cuddled her kiddo in his arms and made her sit on the front seat of his car, and Sukriti headed towards the backseat holding her bag and water bottle .
It was a 15 minutes drive to school from home and here they reached. Sukriti embraced and uplifted Priyanshi in her arms and walked towards the School gate, while Shashank followed them after the car park.
Good Morning!! wished a teacher on duty at the school gate, dressed up smartly in black and white formals with a lovely floral scarf around the neck. Slowly and gradually ,Priyanshi’s facial expressions started changing as she came to know that from here she will be carried alone to her classroom. Inspite of the smiling faces of teachers holding candies and toys to cheer her up, Priyanshi started crying hysterically and shouted repeatedly, "mumma muje school nai Jana ".
Ms.Pomila, the teacher at the gate requested the couple politely to leave, with assurance to give every possible care to the child in school. This was the toughest time in Sukriti’s life, when for the first time she was departing from her " Jigar ka tukra".
Hiding the tears from her eyes, Sukriti looked towards madam Principal, who was also standing out for welcoming the kids. Ma’am came close to her and extending a heart warming smile she said, don’t worry, we are there for her. She ‘ll be fine soon. Knodding his head , Shashank said Thankyou, and we returned home.
By the time we reached home, it was 9.30am. Shashank had also taken an off from his office. The minutes seemed turning into hours. He took a newspaper in his hand and started turning the pages unread. Finally as the clock rung 12, both of them ran towards the door, locking it in a hurry, rushing towards the car.
The moment we reached the school gate, there stood Priyanshi holding Ms.Pomila’s finger, along with other students and teachers. She shouted,"mumma, mumma,Maine sara banana kha liya, danci danci bhi ki aur mam ne muje balloon bhi diya."
Taking the life’s most contented breath, Sukriti hugged and kissed her madly.
"Thank God" she murmured. Happily she sai d"Priyanshi ma’am ko bye karo......"

The Evolution of the Mom in Me in a Nutshell
The fascinating journey of a tomboy enduring the joyous path to loving motherhood... that is me in a nutshell.
Being a sister to a very awesome brother was my most inspirational part of being a tomboy. I did almost everything I could do to be a boyish girl. To be the ultimate tomboy - I was quite proud of it too. The masculinity and the strength - I kind of loved the freedom!
That lasted for about a long time until I met the MAN.
All of a sudden, the coin just flipped. I started looking in the mirror pampering me with a few beauty treats. A pink tint of shyness began to bloom in me.
The roses in my garden smelled sensual, the music of romance echoed. The love for red was the deepest. And I was lost in the path of love! And I felt like I'm almost a pretty WOMAN.
Pregnancy - the fruit of love was blossoming in me. I was so fond of the dolphin jumping in me - the bump and the jump! The late-night craving and the early morning sickness. The unexpected stretchy tattoo designs I saw on my tummy. The expectations and the hype of being a mother were beyond the limit. And finally, the bundle of joy, the cuteness overload was in my arms snuggling. On a sweet December evening with Christmas carols surrounding us... such a divine day.
And that was the beginning of the sweetest of all roller coaster rides I have ever been on, and that was the beginning of me evolving into the realm of motherhood. It was not very simple but was more fascinating. The early riser, the snuggling, the burping, the diaper changing, the cute little blue booties, the ever cute angel dress, the late night sleeping, the crying that was almost non-stop! The feeding part was quite a job but was fun when it was his favourite. Making him enjoy his veggies and making creative and eye-catching foods was such a fun part of being a mother. I too love a few of the baby foods. The saddest part was when I had to get immunization for the baby; the pain he experienced during the prick was so sad.
The main target of all was getting healthy and not getting sick, but yeah, it was never possible to always stay away from a running nose or an upset tummy. The little steps in the corridor he took by himself was unforgettable; with his little favourite lion toy, he was truly a 'Lion King'. Later, I thought about the next step - his school, how would he sing with his friends, his cute dance concert, the funny sports events. That was when I started remembering I have not been in front of the mirror like I used to be before, and I almost forgot about grooming myself because I was busy grooming my baby superhero!
And that was when I realised I have come a long way from a from a tomboy to a girl to a woman to a mother and 24/7 dedicated mom friend to my little superhero Alexander!

Hey Mommies, Take Care of Yourself and Be Better Moms
Postnatal health care is one of the most ignored things once the baby enters this world because the newborn is the cynosure of all eyes whether be it the mother or the other family members. As is the norm, a new mother has to tend to the baby's needs. It is during this phase that the mother starts ignoring herself and this is the time when the body is prone to different problems. Some of these may be the accumulated pregnancy weight which, if not lost, may expose new mothers to problems like diabetes, thyroid, etc.
This is one of the problems I faced myself. I gained around 12 kg during pregnancy but lost hardly 3-4 kg post delivery. I took care of my newborn daughter and also performed other household chores thinking I am being active throughout the day and will gradually lose my weight. However, this hardly helped me. There was not much change in my weight. Also if I stood for a long time my back started aching. My sugar levels sparked up and I started feeling lethargic. I went for a full body checkup and realised that my TSH levels were alarming and were at the pre-diabetic stage.
This served as a wake-up call for me. I re-oriented my lifestyle completely. I dedicated an hour for physical activities in the morning. I took to walking and yoga. Various health apps available on Play Store came to my help in keeping a track of my daily activity. Although, initially, it seemed hard, gradually I incorporated it into my schedule. I managed to lose 8 kg and felt good about myself and my body felt great too. The best part was that I could fit into my pre-pregnancy dresses.
On a serious note, a woman is a pillar of the family. She is the one who takes care of everyone's needs, especially children. So, if she is fit and fine everything sails smoothly. All ladies out there please take care of yourself, sometimes it's necessary to make yourself a priority too.

A. According to many experts, it is normal for 40 weeks of pregnancy to not give birth or to give birth earlier (from 37 to 38 weeks). However, if this delay in labor goes on for too long (when the pregnancy is over 41 weeks), it will make the placenta old, threatening the health and safety of the baby's life.
