Dengue in Babies and Toddlers
In the early stages of their life, babies are prone to a variety of illnesses and diseases. Most of them are taken care of by ensuring that their diet is restricted to breastmilk or properly home cooked food, in older babies. But certain natural aspects cannot always be controlled, such as pests and insects. Mosquitoes are the primary suspects of these, finding their way easily into our homes and causing havoc. Not only that, they are responsible for causing a bunch of diseases, which can be quite harmful.
What is Dengue?
A specific variety of mosquitoes carry a virus that is transmitted to human beings when they end up biting them. This virus results in the illness which is termed as dengue. If not treated well, dengue is known to manifest in a severe form, which is quite fatal.
Dengue cases are widely known around the country. For infants that are less than a year old, their chances of contracting dengue and reaching severity are quite high.
What Is Hemorrhagic Dengue Fever?
When dengue is not treated well, it begins to manifest itself in the form of a fever which lasts for about a week or so. During this period, the body undergoes a lot of conditions such as intense bleeding, difficulty breathing properly, feeling of nausea and incessant vomiting. These are together termed as having contracted haemorrhagic dengue fever.
What Causes Dengue and How Does It Spread?
The variant of the mosquito that spreads the dengue virus is termed as the Aedes species. This mosquito has a very specific identity marker, which is, stripes on its body that resemble a tiger. It is also called as female tiger mosquito due to it. Whenever such a mosquito that carries the virus ends up biting a person to drink the blood, it transmits the virus to the person as well.
One of the specific tendencies of these mosquitoes is their affinity for warm and humid climate, which provides them with the ability to breed easily. This is why the onset of monsoons and the multiple puddles of water cause these mosquitoes to breed quickly and result in multiple cases of dengue. Another behaviour to be factored in is their tendency to feed and bite other humans in the daytime. Most of the mosquitoes from other variants get active towards the evening and night and begin biting then.
Dengue is not contagious among human beings since it can infect a person only when a mosquito carrying that virus ends up biting the person.
Symptoms of Dengue in Babies and Toddlers
The onset of fever that appears suddenly and reaches high temperature very soon.
The eyes start hurting a lot, especially in the region behind the eyeballs.
Headaches start occurring frequently which are quite debilitating and severe.
There is a constant feeling of nausea and dizziness causing discomfort.
Vomiting becomes frequent and incessant, sometimes even uncontrollable.
Bodyache begins to increase, which is highly observed in muscles and joints of the body.
Following the fever, dengue rashes on babies begin to appear in various areas.
Bleeding occurs through the nose in mild quantities.
At times, the gums of the babies can also begin to bleed.
How to Deal With Symptoms of Dengue in Infants and Toddlers?
Intensely high temperature, body rashes, body ache, crying and vomiting are all strong signs of an illness, and especially dengue.
There is no one way to take care of dengue and no specific cure for it as well. There are a number of medications available that help in reducing the fever and nausea, which can consequently assist in taking care of dengue, too.
In any case, no sort of medication that is meant for taking care of inflammations should be administered on the baby. These could further reduce the platelet count of your baby and result in a condition even severe than before.
The immediate action to be taken is to bring your baby to the hospital so that treatment procedures can begin as soon as possible.
Diagnosis of Dengue
One of the first things the doctor will do is to undertake a blood test of the baby. Blood samples will be acquired and will be sent to the lab to check for any infections that can be observed in the blood.
Another marker for checking if dengue is present or not is noting the number of platelets in the blood. Any person contracting dengue suffers a huge drop in the platelet count that results in extreme weakness in the body as well.
If your baby has a fever, the temperature of the baby would also be noted. An extremely high temperature that rises very quickly is a strong sign of the presence of dengue.
Your doctor might ask you to recall how the baby fell ill and when did you first notice the temperature and how quickly did it rise.
He might also ask you about the surrounding conditions of your home or if you’ve recently travelled any place where the baby was exposed to outside atmosphere or mosquitoes were frequently present.
If the baby is vomiting a lot, dehydration might occur. The doctor might recommend undertaking certain procedures to ensure this doesn’t cause further complications.
Dengue Fever Treatment for Babies And Toddlers
As mentioned before, there doesn’t yet exist a medication or vaccine in India that can take care of dengue. There are multiple ways to reduce the symptoms, bring relief, and help the body fight the infection.
Taking enough rest is paramount. The body undergoes a lot of stress and it needs the relaxation to be able to recover. Since your baby will be puking a lot, it would be important to ensure that his hydration levels stay normal. The breastfeeding cycles might have to be increased or even supplemented by formula or so. For older babies, different liquid forms of food might be fine. In case your baby refuses to feed or is too weak to swallow food, the doctor might opt for using intravenous nourishment alternatives to keep the electrolytic and hydration levels on point.
In order to combat the fever, acetaminophen is the right drug to be given. Stay away from administering any form of ibuprofen or aspirin. At times, even after the fever goes down, your baby might start vomiting incessantly. This could mean the onset of haemorrhagic dengue fever. Take your baby to the hospital immediately in such cases.
How to Prevent Dengue?
Mosquitoes that spread dengue breed in fresh and stagnant water. Therefore, it is important to ensure that there is zero presence of any uncovered stored water bodies in your house or in the surroundings close to your home. This includes terraces, gardens, and even your washrooms.
When taking your baby outside or if your house is usually open, make use of mosquito repellents in the form of mats or vaporisers to keep mosquitoes at bay. Using creams and sprays might also be quite effective.
Playing around with dirt and mud can make the body attract mosquitoes even more since mosquitoes tend to hover around in moist areas. Advise your kids to stay away from playing such sports, or wash it off immediately.
Make sure your windows have a permanent mesh or make use of sliding mesh windows such that mosquitoes are prevented from entering inside.
Let your children opt for clothes that cover their bodies completely.
Sleeping in beds that have mosquito nets is the best way to have an undisturbed and safe sleep.
Dengue can very quickly cause the health of a baby to deteriorate if left unchecked. By keeping an open eye for signs of dengue in babies and taking action right away, you can keep your baby healthy and opt for preventive measures that can repeat something like this from happening again.

Seizures in Children – Causes and Treatment
There are many types of seizures that affect children. In fact, the seizures an infant experiences are very different from seizures in a toddler, a school-going child, or a teenager.
A seizure occurs when the brain functions abnormally. This could cause a change in movement, awareness, or attention. They occur in children for multiple reasons.

How to Know If Your Child is Having a Seizure?
There can be many signs to indicate that your child is having a seizure. New-born infants could chew involuntarily, smack their lips or go limp in set periods. Sometimes, you might notice that your child is suddenly unresponsive while staring vacantly. At other times they might be twitching involuntarily. All these are signs of your child having a mild seizure. This type of seizure could last for a few seconds.
A more serious seizure will involve symptoms like becoming unconscious, falling to the floor, jerking, twitching, and losing bowel or bladder control. This type of seizure could last for a few minutes and can be quite terrifying if your child is experiencing it for the first time.
Important Facts on Seizures
It is important that you familiarize yourself with knowledge on seizures. Quite often, the narrative surrounding this condition is apocryphal in nature and only spreads fear. Here are a few facts that you must keep in mind when it comes to seizures:
About one in every hundred children suffers from epilepsy seizures. A low percentage of children below 15 suffer from seizures. Half of that number suffers from febrile seizures or seizures caused by fever.
About 2-5% of all children have suffered from febrile seizures. Seizures in babies are caused when a fever accompanies an illness such as chicken pox. It isn’t known why certain children suffer from seizures due to fevers while others don’t. However, there are several indicators for this occurrence.
Children who have siblings who have suffered from febrile seizures, show more chances of suffering from the same.
Developmentally delayed children or those who have stayed in the NIC-U for more than 28 days are more likely to develop febrile seizures in a child.
Neonatal seizures in babies typically occur within the first 28 days of birth. The most common occurrence is immediately after birth, but this is harder to diagnose as infants will not suffer twitches or convulsions.
Seizures that affect only a part of the brain are known as partial seizures. Simple partial seizures will see a part of the body affected in terms of movement. The child will continue to stay alert and awake during the said seizure. Complex partial seizures are very similar except that the child is unaware of themselves and their surroundings. They will usually repeat an action over and over again. The child is usually disoriented after the seizure ends.
When larger parts of the brain are involved, the seizure is known as generalized seizures. There are two types - convulsive and non-convulsive. In the former, the convulsions are comprised of uncontrollable jerking of muscles. This usually lasts for a period of five minutes. After this is the drowsy postictal period which should last for not more than 15 minutes. This type of seizure is generally accompanied by incontinence and injuries.
When there is muscle contraction and rigidity, then it is known as a tonic seizure. A tonic-clonic seizure sees muscle rigidity alternating with rhythmic jerking of the muscles. This might seem hard to diagnose. However, you can place your palm gently on the muscle and pay attention to its movements.
Petit mal seizures or absence seizures are when a child stares blankly for a few seconds with no recollection of the same. A good indicator of such type of seizure is if the school complains of lack of attention, or if the child suddenly and abruptly, with apparently no reason, loses its place while reading.
A more serious type of seizure is the status epilepticus seizure. Here, the child could either be having a seizure for more than 30 minutes or is suffering from multiple seizures with no rest time in between them. You must call for help and rush your child to the emergency room as soon as you feel that the seizure is going to last long.
When a child suffers from chronic seizures over a period of time, then the child is said to be suffering from seizures. About 30% of children who are epileptic continue to being so even as adults.
Causes of Seizures in Children?
The root cause of seizures vary depending on the individuals, the commonalities are as different as the people are. It is assumed that there may possibly be seizure triggers in children but this has not been confirmed by researchers or doctors with any empirical evidence.
One reason seizures may occur in children is that the cells located in the human brain fire in an abnormal manner, this results in minor nerve damage. Another could be due to an extreme change in brain chemistry. Both these types of seizures indicate a form of trauma or brain defect. Seizures in children could also be caused by blunt force trauma to the head; this would be an external impact seizure that might be temporary.
Disclaimer – In case of a blow to the head that results in seizures, consult a physician immediately.
A forceful injury to the head where the force of a fall or an accident is felt in the brain can also lead to different types of seizures in children. Most seizures in babies are not indicators for epilepsy in children. In fact, children between the ages of 3 months to 6 years can have febrile seizures and they are quite harmless. A strong negative emotional reaction like fear or anger and a reaction to injuries can cause young children to involuntarily hold their breath; this can also cause seizures in young children. There are other causes for seizures like:
Infections – A common reason for young children to have seizures could be infections like meningitis.
Developmental disorders – Developmental disorders like cerebral palsy can induce seizures.
Night terrors – Extreme nightmares or night terrors can create a rapid imbalance in chemicals in the brain in rare cases this can cause seizures.
Psychiatric disturbances – Psychiatric episodes in young children can greatly impact brain chemicals and on occasion cause a seizure.
Metabolic disorders – Most metabolic disorders in young children compromise their immune systems, which can disrupt the body’s chemical composition causing an imbalance in the system which can rarely lead to seizures.
Internal bleeding – Internal bleeding, especially in the brain is a known aggressor of seizures in children.
Medications – If a child does not respond to a type of medication or responds badly to a medicine or type of medication it can on extremely rare occasions lead to a seizure.
Low Oxygen – A lack of oxygen to the brain no matter the reason can be one of the most common causes of seizures in children.
There are numerous causes and sources of seizures in children. Some causes are still being discovered by researchers.
Note – It is important to remember that the primary key identifier for epileptic seizures in children is deductive reasoning. If a seizure is not due to external influences like night terrors, medication, an injury, a fever or a lack of oxygen to the brain then the chances are the child has epilepsy.
Symptoms of Seizures in a Child
Seizures are not all common and do not have a single cause, this is also due to the different varieties or kinds of seizures that can afflict a child. Depending on the cause the signs of seizures can vary. Not all types of seizures in children are considered life-threatening, it is crucial for the health of the child that the parents not panic and jump to conclusions.
Disclaimer – Please consult a physician if seizures are recurring in the child, do not self-medicate.
It is important that parents understand what to look for, the symptoms and markers of seizures should be recognizable and it is vital to know what the signs that point to seizures are. Here are some of the most common symptoms of seizures in children.
The child’s alertness is key in helping doctors identify if the child has had a seizure. If the child does not respond in a clear and alert manner it can indicate that they either had a seizure or one is coming.
Disclaimer – The lack of alertness can be an indicator of seizures but it doesn’t guarantee one is coming or has happened, this factor only helps a doctor decide if further examinations are required.
Extreme confusion as a result of random clapping, lip-smacking, loud chewing and repetitive motions can indicate seizures. If these seizures are common it can be indicative of a condition called complex partial seizures.
Spasms that move from one group of muscles to the other followed by the symptoms of complex partial seizures can indicate a type of seizure called march seizures, during an episode of this type of seizure the children may behave strangely, be disoriented and have no memory of the seizure itself after it dissipates.
Risks Related to Seizures?
While seizures look frightening, they do not cause any damage themselves. Some forms of partial seizures can cause fear in both the child as well as people around him. Since the child has no control over his or her actions, they can repeat motions and movements that are worrying to people watching.
Seizures can also cause injury if the convulsions are particularly violent. Sometimes, the child could be holding an object that could cause injury while the muscles jerk. They could also get hurt when they hit the ground or hit another object near them.
The scenario is different if the seizure lasts for more than five minutes as it could cause brain damage. Make sure you rush your child to the emergency room in such cases.
Diagnosing Seizures
There are various tests a doctor can use to diagnose your child. These tests are based on the age of your child and the type of seizure your doctor thinks your child suffers from. This can be determined by giving the doctor a detailed history of your child’s medical health including any dangerous chemicals they might have been exposed to. Try to describe in detail the actual seizure with records of how long it lasted, time of occurrence, and extent of tiredness afterwards.
The tests are based on the type of seizure. Some of them are as follows:
If your doctor suspects that your child has had a febrile seizure, the first line of defence is to cure the actual fever. Blood tests might be carried out to determine the cause of the fever to better treat it. Very rarely is a child admitted to a hospital for having a febrile seizure.
If your child is having a movement seizure in the emergency room, then medications will be given to stop it. Your doctor will prescribe that you get an EEG for your child to study the electric waves of his brain. Commonly, a CT scan or an MRI could also be recommended to rule out the presence of a tumour.
A petit mal seizure is also diagnosed using an EEG. If the condition is confirmed, then your child will be put on medications to control the condition.
Quick Treatments for Seizures?
There are multiple steps you can take to make sure that the effect of the seizure on your child is kept to a minimum. There are some that you can do in your home and others where you will need medical assistance.
Home Treatment
Sometimes, you might be in charge of overseeing a large group of kids’ play activities. Here is what to do if a child has a seizure.
Clear the area of objects that may harm your child including anything your child was holding or wearing, such as his glasses.
Loosen any clothing, especially around the area of the neck so that his breathing is not obstructed.
Make sure your child is breathing. Call for help if he is not.
Do not attempt to hold down your child as he goes through the seizure. You could end up hurting both your child and yourself.
After the seizure, roll your child onto his side and observe his breathing. If he isn’t, then administer CPR. Do not attempt this while he is experiencing the seizure.
Do not give your child any food, liquids or medications immediately after a seizure.
Stay with your child until he is fully awake. Keep a track of the amount of time the actual seizure lasted as well as the recovery time.
Medical Treatment
The treatment for seizures in children is very different from that in adults. Unless the root cause of the seizures is pinpointed, doctors will not recommend medication to your child.
Most children suffer from seizures only once in their lives. This is one of the main causes for not medicating children who have had their first seizure. Some of the drugs used to treat seizures could cause damage to the liver or teeth apart from having other side effects.
If your doctor has prescribed medication for seizures, then this will be followed by multiple blood tests as the doctor carefully regulates the drug dosages.
In the case of status epilepticus, your child will be admitted to the ICU and will be administered with anti-seizure medication.
How to Prevent Seizures
Unfortunately, most types of seizures cannot be prevented. Only in the case of febrile seizures in a child, can you take care to ensure that the fever is treated quickly. One of the best things you can do is ensure that your child does not get hurt when experiencing a seizure. Since most kids with seizures can enjoy a full and active life, care must be taken to ensure that an adult is around for supervision. Make sure you run the scenario of a seizure with the adult and should at least give them your emergency contact numbers. You must also have a shower in the bathroom your child uses as opposed to a bathtub as the latter runs the risk of accidental drowning in case of a seizure.
Prognosis for Seizures
Usually, children with seizures go on to have full and rewarding lives. Sometimes, their brains ‘outgrow’ their seizures and stop having them for years. This is a great time for your doctor to wean your child off medication and see if he can continue having a seizure-free life.
Even children who suffer from status epilepticus have a low risk of dying from this type of seizure. In fact, if your child gets timely medical help, there is no reason to assume that he will suffer from permanent damage.
However, children who suffer from developmental disabilities or have neonatal seizures can suffer from limitations and might need special attention as they grow. Your doctor will be able to best tell you what you can realistically expect.
Can Seizure Disorders in a Child Cause Brain Damage?
In case your child experiences many seizures that last for a short time, then your child will not suffer any brain damage. Damage is usually caused when the seizure continues for more than five minutes. It is imperative that you keep track of your child’s seizures and call for help as soon as you think the seizure is going to last for more than five minutes. Sometimes, seizures will be accompanied by periods of where your child does not breathe. If the brain’s supply of oxygen is cut-off for an extended amount of time, then this could also damage the brain.
You must ensure that your child receives immediate medical help when he has a seizure. It is best to leave it to your doctor to make the final diagnosis. Have an open and honest discussion with your doctor regarding the lifestyle of your child as well as any treatment your doctor would recommend.
Make sure you have a discussion with your child about his condition. Try to be as honest as you can without scaring him, and answer any and all questions he may have. Remember, your child is probably just as scared as you are and it would comfort him to know that he is not alone. Read more

Beautiful Quotes by Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Here are some lovely quotes by Guru Nanak Ji, that you can share with your loved ones to mark this auspicious day.
"If there is one God, then there is only His way to attain Him, not another. One must follow that way and reject the other. Worship not him who is born only to die, but Him who is eternal and is contained in the whole universe."
"Even Kings and emperors with heaps of wealth and vast dominion cannot compare with an ant filled with the love of God."
"Burn worldly love, rub the ashes and make ink of it, make the heart the pen, the intellect the writer, write that which has no end or limit."
"If the people use the wealth bestowed on them by God for themselves alone or for treasuring it, it is like a corpse. But if they decide to share it with others, it becomes sacred food."
"There is but One God. His name is Truth; He is the Creator. He fears none; he is without hate. He never dies; He is beyond the cycle of births and death. He is self-illuminated. He is realized by the kindness of the True Guru. He was True in the beginning; He was True when the ages commenced and has ever been True. He is also True now."
"Let no man in the world live in delusion. Without a Guru, none can cross over to the other shore."
"Owing to ignorance of the rope the rope appears to be a snake; owing to ignorance of the Self the transient state arises of the individualized, limited, phenomenal aspect of the Self."
"Sing the songs of joy to the Lord, serve the Name of the Lord, and become the servant of His servants."
"Only fools argue whether to eat meat or not. They don't understand truth, nor do they meditate on it. Who can define what is meat and what is plant? Who knows where the sin lies, being a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian?
"Nanak, the whole world is in distress. He, who believes in the Name, becomes victorious."
"There are worlds and more worlds below them, and there are a hundred thousand skies over them. No one has been able to find the limits and boundaries of God. If there be any account of God, then alone the mortal can write the same; but God's account does not finish, and the mortal himself dies while still writing."
"By singing the Guru's hymns, I, the minstrel spread the Lord's glory. Nanak, by praising the True Name, I have obtained the perfect Lord."
"That one plant should be sown and another be produced cannot happen; whatever seed is sown, a plant of that kind even comes forth."
"Let God's grace be the mosque, and devotion the prayer mat. Let the Quran be the good conduct."
"Asceticism doesn't lie in ascetic robes or in walking staff nor in the ashes. Asceticism doesn't lie in the earring nor in the shaven head nor blowing a conch. Asceticism lies in remaining pure amidst impurities."
"Whatever kind of seed is sown in a field, prepared in due season, a plant of that same kind, marked with the peculiar qualities of the seed, springs up in it."
"Through shallow intellect, the mind becomes shallow, and one eats the fly, along with the sweets."
"Offspring, the due performance on religious rites, faithful service, highest conjugal happiness and heavenly bliss for the ancestors and oneself, depend on one's wife alone."
"He who regards all men as equals is religious."
"Whatever be the qualities of the man with whom a woman is united according to the law, such qualities even she assumes, like a river, united with the ocean."
"He who has no faith in himself can never have faith in God."
"Dwell in peace in the home of your own being, and the Messenger of Death will not be able to touch you."
We hope these Gurpurab messages and quotes will light up the life of your loved ones. So, take your pick from these beautiful messages for Guru Nanak Ji's birthday. We wish you a very Happy Guru Nanak Jayanti! Read more

How to Get Rid of Belly Fat Post Delivery
Congratulations to all the women who have just embraced motherhood. Being a mother is one of the best feelings in the world. But when a few months pass, most women start worrying about their belly fat. Moms all over the world have a common worry, "Will I always have belly fat forever?" They often ask themselves, "How can they focus on their health while taking care of a baby?"
If you also have these questions in your mind, then don't you. worry. You will be fine! I am sharing a few steps which you can follow to have a healthy body and mind.
Sometimes, after delivery, a new mother's stomach shrinks back to normal. However, it's not the same with all women. Many women find it difficult to lose weight and it may take them a lot of time to get back in shape. Yes, it is going to be hard. However, by following a good workout program you can get back in shape with time.
Eat nutritious food. Eat healthy as much as possible as it would be good for your health and even for your baby's health.
Walk for at least 30-45 minutes. Walking regularly will keep your mind and body fresh from all the ache and soreness. You can fun it up by taking your baby for a walk.
If you don't like to gym, you can try some yoga. Yoga is the key to good health. Practicing yoga will keep your stress at bay and if you practice "Suryanamaskar" on a daily basis, it will help burn belly fats and normalize your hormones too.
Wearing belly wraps or maternity belts can help burn abdominal fat and shrink back the uterus to its normal size. I personally used belly wraps which worked wonders for me. It also helps with back pain
You can try head lifts, shoulder lifts, curl-ups, kneeling pelvic tilt, and Kegel exercises. How about some fun mom and baby workout?
Last but not least be happy no matter what. Enjoy and cherish each and every moment with your newborn.
These are some tips that you can try to lose weight after delivery. However, it is suggested that you consult a doctor before starting with any exercise. Ask him when you can start exercising and be safe!

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss – Reasons & Treatment
Recurrent pregnancy loss is not uncommon, and the person who deals with it goes through a lot of emotional trauma. However, in many cases, there has been no known cause to explain why recurrent miscarriages take place.
Having one miscarriage after another can drain a person emotionally. Often, the person has no hope of becoming a mother in the future. However, it has been seen that most women go on and have babies even after experiencing recurrent miscarriages. This is most likely when there is no identifiable cause for the miscarriage.
One in every 100 women is likely to experience recurrent miscarriage. The chances of another miscarriage increase a little as you grow in age. In general, a person who has experienced three miscarriages one after the other has a 40% chance of having another miscarriage. This means that six out of ten women will have a successful pregnancy after recurrent miscarriages.
What Is Recurrent Pregnancy Loss?
When someone experiences three or more miscarriages in a row, it is termed as recurrent miscarriage or recurrent pregnancy loss. If you have experienced this, it is important that you visit a gynaecologist immediately. The doctor will be able to find out the probable cause/s behind it.
Causes of Recurrent Miscarriage
Studies have not been able to identify a direct cause for spontaneous abortion. While certain health conditions are thought to be responsible for miscarriages, the exact relation between these conditions and the miscarriage is still under research.
Some of the probable causes that lead to recurrent miscarriages could be:
Antiphospholipid syndrome or APS: This is a condition when your blood clots easily and without outside stimuli. This is also known as Hughes syndrome or sticky blood syndrome. This cause has been found to be responsible for 15-20% of the recurrent miscarriage cases. Other risks include premature delivery or stillbirth.
Genes: Your genes can also be responsible for the series of miscarriages. If there is an abnormality in your or your partner’s chromosomes, it can lead to miscarriages. In most of the cases, this abnormality is diagnosed once the baby is born and he/she inherits it. About 5% of the couples experiencing recurrent miscarriages have a chromosomal abnormality.
Thrombophilia: This can also be one of the causes of recurrent miscarriages. This is a genetic blood-clotting disorder that leads to clotting of blood in the blood vessels.
Physical anomalies: If you have cervical weakness or the shape of your uterus is abnormal or it has fibroids, this can lead to recurrent miscarriages. A malformed uterus is responsible for 15% of the recurrent miscarriages.
Septate uterus: This is a condition where your uterus has a septum that divides the uterus into two cavities. This can also be a probable cause for miscarriage.
Vaginal infection: Infections like bacterial vaginosis can also increase the risk of miscarriages. They can also lead to premature birth. Unfortunately, the exact role of the bacteria is still not clear in the case of miscarriages. Other infections like listeriosis, toxoplasmosis, herpes, measles, etc., can also be responsible for miscarriages.
Hormonal problems: These can be one of the causes of recurrent miscarriages. Problems like polycystic ovaries are linked to miscarriages though the reason behind it is not clearly understood.
Endocrine disorders: Disorders like hypothyroidism can lead to untimely loss of the foetus. Diabetes mellitus, if untreated, can cause miscarriages too.
Luteal phase defect: This is when there is an insufficient release of the hormone progesterone. It can also lead to miscarriages.
Your age can also be the reason behind this occurrence. The older you are, the higher is the risk for miscarriages. Your partner’s age also has an important role to play when it comes to recurrent miscarriages.
As you turn 35, the number of eggs and their quality will start to decline, and this intensity will increase with your age. There is a chance of the genetic material going wrong at the time of fertilisation. This can lead to a chromosomal abnormality in your baby and increase the chance of a miscarriage. Lifestyle factors like smoking, consuming alcohol, or exposure to toxins can also lead to recurrent miscarriages.
While there are many causes that are linked to recurrent miscarriages, in most cases, no verifiable cause can explain why recurrent miscarriages take place.
Diagnosis
Thorough and proper clinical examinations are conducted to find out the actual cause of recurrent miscarriages. An ultrasound scan will be recommended to you to assess your ovaries and uterus. Blood tests for recurrent miscarriage can also be recommended to see if you or your partner have any chromosomal abnormalities. Genetic counselling will be prescribed if the above-mentioned test reveals any abnormality.
TORCH is a specialised test that reveals viral or bacterial infections. It can be recommended by your doctor to diagnose the cause of miscarriage. Tissues from the placenta can also be tested to find out the probable cause.
If none of these tests yield any result, chances are high that the next pregnancy will be successful, and you will become a mother.
What Treatment is Available for Recurrent Pregnancy Loss?
The treatment depends on the causes that have been diagnosed. There is, of course, no treatment in the cases of unexplained recurrent miscarriages. Let’s look at some of the treatments available for the known causes:
Genetic Counselling: The primary objective of abortion counselling is to empower you and make you feel positive. It involves encouraging the couple to take a mutual decision about conception. Rigorous activities and too much of exercise are restricted. Sexual intercourse is also not recommended when you are expecting and more so during the first and third trimester.
Medicines and Injections: Many gynaecologists prescribe progesterone injections, though there is a lot of doubt as far as this line of treatment is concerned. Progesterone is known to relax the muscles and increase the risk of an abnormal pregnancy. It can also lead to incomplete abortion.
If you have APS, your doctor might recommend heparin administration as this is known to increase the chances of birth by more than 70 percent. The administration of metformin can also be helpful, according to some experts, and more so if the woman has polycystic ovaries.
Surgical Treatment: Cervical cerclage or McDonald's stitches is a common recurrent miscarriage treatment option for patients who have cervical problems. In this procedure, stitches are given to close your cervix. This prevents premature birth or miscarriage. This involves a risk and can induce uterine contractions. This can help only those women who have less than 25 mm cervix.
Chances of Having a Healthy Baby after Recurrent Miscarriage
Doctors have observed that the chance of a successful pregnancy right after a recurrent miscarriage is at its peak. Your pregnancy will be closely monitored, and the fact that you will get close attention and care will reduce the risk of anything going wrong. If there are chromosomal defects involved, then it is hard to predict the chances of you conceiving a healthy baby. If there is a treatment for the genetic disorder, then you should ideally be able to conceive.
Conclusion: There is no single explanation behind why recurrent miscarriages take place. There are some strict rules such as not smoking during pregnancy. However, there are many women who have not touched a cigarette and still have a miscarriage. It is natural for recurrent miscarriage to make you feel emotionally drained out. Bearing the pain of losing another baby can be very tough. Make sure to seek support from your friends and family. Support groups and counsellors are also great options that you can try out. It is important that you stay optimistic and have a positive mind. Both of these will be essential to help you have a normal pregnancy and give birth to a healthy baby. Read more
