Home Remedies to Remove White Patches on The Face of Babies and Kids
White patches on the skin are a common problem among children. However, there is no reason to be alarmed about this, as many of the issues that cause the patches can be fixed easily. There are many misconceptions about the white patches that appear on a child’s face. Here is all you need to know about them.
What are The Common Causes of White Patches on a Child’s Face?
1. Vitamin Deficiency
This is a very common reason for the appearance of the white patches on the face of many children. We all know that a balanced and healthy diet is essential and that many kids refuse to eat properly. This will result in many deficiencies, and vitamin deficiency is one of them.
The vitamin that is responsible for the production of melanin is vitamin B12. Deficiency in this vitamin can lead to white spots. They might appear not only on the face but anywhere on the body especially the forearms. A very high deficiency might lead to itching and further lightening. The skin might also turn red or pink in some cases.
Providing the child with a healthy and a balanced diet is the best way to treat these spots after you consult a doctor.
Zinc and calcium deficiency could also lead to this problem.
2. Birthmarks
There are many cases where these spots on the child’s face turned out to be birthmarks. If such is the case, then there is no need to worry.
3. Tinea Versicolour
Tinea versicolour/ Pityriasis versicolour is a fungal infection caused by Malassezia. The way this fungus affects the children is by producing an acid that will interfere with the melanin production inside the body.
When this happens, the patches could either be lighter/ darker than the usual skin colour of the kid. At times, they are itchy and scaly too. They appear mostly on the torso and shoulders but might also be seen on the neck, face, and the stomach.
People who live in a humid or hot climate are affected more. Exposure to the sun can make the patches more pronounced since they are not prone to tanning. All you need to improve this condition is to make sure the kid does not have any immunity problems and consume a well-balanced diet.
The lack of hygiene is also known to cause this problem.
4. Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a skin condition that scares many parents though they are harmless. The white patches on the skin are caused due to the loss of pigmentation. Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder. This means that your body attacks its melanocytes. The cells that produce melanin are called melanocytes.
These spots are usually seen on the parts of the body that are exposed to sunlight but may also affect any other part of the body. The condition is more noticeable in children with a darker complexion though it can affect kids of various skin types. Vitiligo is not contagious, so there is no need to worry. Why this condition scares people is due to the way the patches look. The appearance, along with the lack of knowledge about the disease causes a stigma.
5. Spots Caused to Injury/Burns
Many times, trauma to a particular part of the skin can cause a lack of pigmentation or a delayed pigmentation at the site of the injury.
6. Worm Infection
This reason is a bit questionable. Some people claim the white patches are due to worms in the stomach. Though this reason is not sure, you can still deworm your kids once in a while.
How to Get Rid of White Spots on Your Child’s Face at Home?
Here are some home remedies for white patches on face of a child.
A broad spectrum sunscreen can be applied on the face before the child goes outside
Ensure that your kid eats a lot of vegetables and fruits
Although it is not sure that worms cause patches, there is no harm in deworming the child. You can do this every six months
Many paediatricians advise using non-perfume and non-dye emollients. This will prevent dry skin which might sometimes lead to Pityriasis Alba
In case the white patches are due to a fungal infection, then you can use antifungal creams which will work against the infection
How to Treat White Spots That are Caused due to Pityriasis Alba?
When the causes are not known it is hard to prevent them. You can make sure your kid eats healthy fruits and vegetables. You could also do this
1. Use Sunscreen
Make sure that your child goes out having applied a broad spectrum of sunscreen. This will help to prevent any sun damage and will protect your child.
2. Use Non-scented Emollients or Moisturisers
The patches that appear are sensitive when compared to the skin around it. This is why it is better to use moisturisers that are not filled with artificial fragrance or chemicals. Your paediatrician will know the best moisturiser you could use on your child.
When to Consult a doctor?
Any of the reasons mentioned above could be a reason for the appearance of white patches. Though most of them are harmless, at times, they could also be dangerous. So the best thing to do is check with a doctor for a proper conclusion.
Apart from that, do consult a doctor if you see any of these symptoms accompanied by the patches.
Severe itching
An alteration in the colour of the spots (usually to red)
Loss of sensitivity on that area of skin
How to Help A Child with White Patches so That It Doesn’t Affect His Self Confidence?
Little children do not care about the way they look. But when they grow older, their self-awareness increases. This condition might hit their self-confidence.
If your kid has been affected by this condition and if they cannot be treated, the parents will have to help the child cope.
Here are some points you should keep in mind
Start by talking to them and make sure that they are comfortable about the way they look
If you feel like you cannot help them, then you can think about counselling
Ensure that they are comfortable enough to talk about stuff to you. This way, you can find out if somebody is bullying your child due to his/her appearance
If required, you can inform your kid’s teachers
To get rid of any misconceptions, educate their friends
If none of these points seems to work, you can always try using cosmetics to hide the spots on the face
White spots on a child’s face are more common than people think. Various reasons cause this, and most of them can be cured.

15 Best Indoor Plants for Apartment Living
Indoor plants are an amazing way to bring vibrant colours and nature into your home. They are also good at purifying the air inside your room. You could fill the empty corners with big and majestic looking plants, or you could decide on filling the small spaces with small potted plants. They are perfect for adding greenery to your home.
Small Indoor Plants to Spruce Up Your Home Space
Here are some great plants you could keep at home.
1. Swiss Cheese Plant
Swiss cheese plants have lush green leaves with distinctive holes, and they can grow to fit any space in the room. They make a stunning statement; the reason this plant is one of the most popular indoor plants at present. The plant prefers a warm climate kept away from sunlight. They also benefit from regular cleaning using a soft, damp cloth.
This plant also enjoys a fairly moist condition, so it is best to avoid artificial cooling and heating. They will also need a monthly feeding during the spring and the summer when they are planted in containers. Naturally, they like climbing, so it is best to provide a trellis or stake for support.
2. Devil’s Ivy
Also known as pothos or golden pothos, Devil’s Ivy is a forgiving and fast-growing vine that is well suited for any position in the house. They could be kept in glass vases or potted in hanging baskets but no matter where they are kept, they will always remain stunning and are super low-maintenance. The leaves are heart-shaped and waxy.
The colour of the leaves depends on the cultivar. They do not require regular fertilization and are highly drought-tolerant. You should water them every once a week. The best time to grow this plant is during the summers by placing the cuttings in jars of water to encourage rooting.
3. Mass Cane
Thanks to its hardy nature, this plant is often an office staple and is popular among beginners. Mass Cane has long, green leaves with green stripes and light yellow running through them and often grow really tall with stalky stems.
If you are looking for large plants, then this is a fantastic option. The plant can tolerate low light but is best placed in indirect bright light. You will only need to water it once a week. However, they are not the best indoor plants if you have pets in the house since this plant is toxic to cats and dogs.
4. Peace Lily
The Peace Lily is among the best indoor plants to keep the air clean and a very popular house plant. This plant has dark, glossy, green foliage with beautiful white flowers. They usually grow up to 65 centimeters and thrive in bright and indirect light. They are the best indoor plants for low light, but that might affect the way they bloom.
You should water the Peace Lily once a week during the summers and less often during the winters. They are prone to root rotting and hate wet or soggy soil, so it is best if you keep the soil dry before watering. Make sure your children or pets do not chew them as they are poisonous and might cause severe discomfort if ingested.
5. Bromeliad
These rosette-forming perennials make for simple, low-maintenance houseplants. When they are grown indoors, they do well in shallow pots and must be kept in medium to bright light. You can water them less during the winters.
During the summers, you can water them by filling the central cup once a week. To prevent stagnation, make sure you flush it on a regular basis. They are not heavy feeders which means that you will need to give a slow-release fertilizer only once every season.
6. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue
Otherwise known as the Snake plant, this is another low-maintenance indoor plant that originates from Southern Asia and Africa. The leaves of the plant have pointed tips which is why they are known as Mother-in-Law’s tongue. This succulent, upright plant grows up to two meters. They are also extremely hardy.
They don't wither easily which makes them a good option for those who tend to neglect their plants. They should be kept in direct sunlight for a few hours during the days. They can tolerate shade but might take a longer time to grow. Moderate water is required. The soil can be kept slightly damp during the summers but must be a little drier during the winters.
7. Zanzibar Gem
This plant has a stunning look and has been known to be almost indestructible which makes them perfect for those who neglect plants. They are really drought-resistant and can survive without water for a long period. This plant is native to Africa and has green and deep glossy leaves. Zanzibar Gem plants are very hardy because of their ability to store water in their tuber.
Make sure you do not overwater them or make them sit in water. In fact, this plant thrives when you do not prefer to water them too often. Watering them once a month is enough and they are best placed in a bright to lightly shaded area. Never keep them in direct sunlight as they might burn.
8. Anthurium Andraeanum
They are originally from Columbia and feature dark-green and long, leathery leaves. They produce red, pink, and white heart-shaped flowers that can last for many weeks. The flowers are actually leaf-like bracts that surround a cylindrical spike.
They require bright sunlight to bloom, and the soil must be kept evenly moist during the summers and dry during the winters. You could fertilise them every two weeks in summers with high-phosphorus liquid fertiliser.
9. Maidenhair Fern
This is a beautiful addition to your home. Their leaves are light green and feathery with soft, shiny stems. They would make a wonderful hanging plant. They are really fragile plants and require neither too much light nor too little.
They should be grown well in a warm spot with little humidity. You can create your own rainforest environment. All you have to do is fill a saucer with pebbles underneath the potted plant. Pour water into the saucer and when the water evaporates, it will make a humid microclimate around the plant.
10. Rubber Plant
Otherwise known as Rubber Fig, they contain shiny leaves of burgundy and dark green and are on trend when it comes to indoor plants. You can either encourage them to grow into a large indoor plant or let them stay small in a little pot.
They are temperature-resilient and a hardy option that requires indirect, bright light with weekly watering during the summers and monthly watering during the winters.
11. Baby Toes
This plant hails from a succulent family. They are called baby toes because of their small stature and their resemblance to an infant’s little toes. They are a really wonderful attraction due to their unusual look.
They grow well in indirect sunlight and need to be well drained. These plants are best as a tabletop decor but can also be placed in any room of the house.
12. Chinese Money Plant
These pretty plants are well known for their round and beautiful leaves. They are also called missionary plants because, during the 1940s, Norwegian Missionary Agnar Espergen took cuttings of this plant home.
This is how the plant eventually spread throughout the world. They are very easy to propagate. They only require partial shade and need to be well-drained. They also act as excellent shelf decor.
13. Areca Palm
This plant can grow anywhere in the house with indirect sunlight. The leaves will turn yellow if they are exposed to direct sunlight for a really long time. Areca palms can grow as high as 30 feet when they are kept outdoors, but when placed indoors, they are restricted to about seven feet.
You can decide to put the plant in a small container. This way the crowded roots will help to limit the size of the plant. The plant is a very effective humidifier. You can water them enough to keep the soil moist except during the winters.
14. Aloe Vera
This brilliant plant clears benzene and formaldehyde from the air. It is also a common fact that they are very good for having a great complexion. Aloe plants like to be warm and dry instead of cold and wet.
This is why you should water the pot only when it is dry. The best placement of his plant in the house is near a sunny window. In full shade, the aloe will not grow. Do not water the plant if you have newly repotted them because the roots should settle in.
15. Indian Basil
Commonly known as Tulsi, this plant is very low-maintenance and has several medicinal properties. They are one of the best indoor plants for oxygen and are good at purifying and improving the quality of air.
You can plant it in a simple pot. The plant requires regular sunlight, and you will need to water it regularly.
Indoor plants are an amazing idea for home decor. These plants not only enhance the look of your home but also purify the indoor air. Start by choosing from your favourites and see where they fit.

How to Clean a Washing Machine Inside and Out at Home
Most of us don't remember to clean our washing machines, do you? You might think how can a machine that cleans something get dirty? However, soap scum, bacteria, and other germs grow over time inside the machine if it is not washed properly. These could damage the machine and also cut down the life span of your machine. Moreover, it could also pose a safety hazard as the machine is used to clean our daily use items like clothing, bags, and even shoes.
Cleaning your washing machine may seem like a tiresome, but it should not be ignored. While some tips could be used from time to time to clean the washing machine, there are elaborate processes that should be used at regular intervals to clean every part of your washing machine thoroughly. This article gives you an understanding of the importance of cleaning the washing machine and the tips to carry out the process.
Why Is It Important to Clean a Washing Machine?
This would be the first question that would come to your mind if someone told you to clean your washing machine. The answer is simple. Many undesirable things like moss, lime scale, and germs can build up inside your machine with regular use. Front loading machines and High Efficiency (HE) washers are most prone to mould and mildew growth around the door seal due to moisture. Not only does it create an unpleasant odour, but it also proves to be a health hazard.
Many parents use cloth diapers for their babies. While most of the icky stuff on cloth diapers can be washed off, the residue finds its way into the machine. In addition to this, the accumulation of dirt particles from other clothing, like dusting cloths and wipes also cause the inside of the washing machine to become filthy. This is the reason why your washing machine needs care, too.
Even if you do not wash cloth diapers or dusting cloths in your machine, it still stands the risk of mould and bacterial growth because its interior is dark, moist, and closed.
How to Clean a Washing Machine Naturally at Home
When was the last time you cleaned your washing machine? Ideally, if the machine is being used on a regular basis, it needs to be cleaned once in a week or bi-weekly. Cleaning your washing machine might sound like a tedious task, but fret not. Here are a few useful tips to show that extra care your machine needs:
1. A Top Loading Washing Machine
Follow these simple directions to clean the top load of your washing machine.
What You Require
White Vinegar or bleach
Baking soda
Toothbrush
Microfibre cloth
Directions
Set the washer on the hottest water setting and the longest wash setting, and fill the water to the highest level the machine allows.
As the washer tub fills, pour a quart of vinegar or bleach into it as these act as disinfectants.
Now, close the lid of the machine and allow it to process it for a minute. After a minute, open the lid and let it stay for an hour.
While the water and vinegar are set to soak in the washer tub, remove any parts that you can and rinse them and clean the nook and corners under the lid. Use a toothbrush to access difficult areas like under the lid and the periphery of the tub and also the upper portion of the agitator. Don’t forget to clean the front and the side body of the machine.
After an hour, close the washing machine lid and let the cycle finish. Simultaneously, you could use this time to clean the dials and the top of the machine with the vinegar solution.
Once this cycle finishes, run another cycle with baking soda instead of vinegar or bleach. This will neutralise the vinegar or bleach and also help remove any residues from the previous cycle.
Once the second cycle is finished and the washer is drained, clean the washing machine with a vinegar solution and wipe down the sides and the bottom of the tub. Let the lid remain open after the cleaning process to dry out thoroughly and to prevent the development of mildew.
2. A Front Load Washing Machine
Following these easy steps will help you keep your front load washing machine super-clean.
What You Require
Vinegar
Bleach
Bucket
Sponger or cleaning rag
A clean cloth
Directions
Firstly, make sure the washing machine drum is empty. Then select the clean cycle or tub cleaner setting. If not available, set the washer on the hottest water setting and the longest wash setting, and fill the water to the level the machine is capable of holding. Following this, add two cups of vinegar into the detergent tray. The vinegar will help in eliminating any odour causing substances and residues. Let the entire wash and rinse cycle complete.
Once the first cycle is done and the washer is drained, repeat the cycle but add two cups of bleach to the detergent tray instead of vinegar. Cleaning with bleach helps remove stains and germs that have been accumulated in the tub, and cleans any leftover residues from the previous wash cycle.
Next, if all the stains have disappeared, run an additional cycle without adding anything to remove any residues completely.
Get a bucket full of warm water and liquid soap. Remove the parts of the detergent tray and soak it in the warm water for a few minutes. Once they are soaked, pick each piece and wipe them with a sponge. Let them dry thoroughly before you place them back again on the tray.
Next, pull back the rubber seal around the door to inspect for any icky stuff or residues. To clean it, pour a gallon of warm water containing one cup of chlorine bleach. Soak the cloth in the solution and wipe down the seal. Following this, use a clean, dry cloth to wipe off the seal of any residues and remaining moisture.
Lastly, use a damp cloth to clean the outsides of the machine just as nicely as the inside.
It is also important to clean the washing machine filter at regular intervals as clogged filters can damage the machine. Follow the instructions mentioned in the manufacturer’s manual to complete the process.
Another tip is to leave the door or the lid of the washing machine open between uses. Also, wipe down the seal at least once a month to avoid residue and the formation of odour-causing substances.
Best Practices for Maintaining Clean-smelling Washing Machine
You could also use the following everyday hacks to keep your clothes and the machine smelling clean always:
Take out the clothes from the washing machine after the wash cycle as soon as you can.
Leave the door or the lid of the washing machine open for some time to let the washer dry thoroughly and to prevent moist areas within the machine.
Wipe down the rubber seal with a cloth.
Pull the detergent tray out, scrub it clean, and leave it to dry after use.
Make sure you clean out the lint filter after each use. Remove all the lint and wash out the filter.
Run an empty hot wash cycle with 3 to 4 cups of white vinegar at least once a week. The hot water and vinegar will remove bacteria and mould.
FAQs
Below are the answers to a couple of frequently asked questions about cleaning the inside of a washing machine:
1. How Much Vinegar Should I Put in My Washing Machine to Clean It?
Around 900 ml to 1 litre of vinegar should be used to clean the washing machine.
2. Can I Clean the Washer with Baking Soda and Vinegar Using Cold Water Instead of Hot?
Yes, you can use, but it will not be as effective as hot water since hot water not only cleans but also sanitises.
These simple steps would help run the machine for longer and prevent the accumulation of lint and dirt. This will deter the development of bacteria and odour causing substances within the machine. Based on your usage, you should clean your washing machine once or twice a week. Top load washing machines run a higher risk of mould or mildew formations due to the remaining moisture inside the washer drum after every use. Front load washing machines also run the risk of damage due to clogged filters, residues, or stains and lack of attention to the rubber seal around the door of the machine while cleaning.
Hence, it is important to thoroughly clean every part of the washing machine such as a detergent tray, washer tub, the dials on the surface, agitator, washing machine filter, rubber seal, and the outside of the machine body as well! So, this weekend, clean your washing machine.
