Anaesthesia in Pregnancy - Is It Risky?
Anaesthesia has been a blessing for doctors and patients alike. It numbs down the pain experienced significantly for the patient making surgery a less painful affair. For doctors, it comes as a blessing as the patient doesn’t need to be restrained and the doctor can focus on the surgery.
Is Anesthesia Safe during Pregnancy?
The female body is wonderfully designed and has evolved in such as way that pregnancies can be handled by it. However, there can be emergency situations where the babies head is too big and requires a caesarean. In such cases, anaesthesia is used. The downside of this is that they put the mother and foetus at risk because of complications such as miscarriage. Therefore, the use of it is only in life and death situations and should be avoided especially in the first trimester.
Types of Anesthesia
There are two kinds of anesthesia
1. Local Anesthesia
Used by a dentist for minor oral intrusions.
Epidural anaesthetic (local anaesthetic during pregnancy) is used during delivery. This is injected through a tube into the epidural space situated in the lower back.
A spinal anaesthetic is used during delivery as well as knee replacements and hip surgery. In this, the anaesthetic is injected into the epidural area but in one shot.
Injected into a localized or specific area.
Side effects include minor bruising, dizziness and pins and needle sensation in that area.
Its effects on the infant are nil and risk during cesarean section is considerably less.
2. General Anesthesia
Administered by Liquid injected directly into your bloodstream or gas that is given through a mask.
The anaesthetist stays beside the operating table throughout the procedure.
Side effects include nausea, shivering, sore throat and difficulty in passing urine.
The effects are instantaneous.
Anesthesia During Labour and Delivery
Anaesthesia is used for pain management at this stage. An epidural or spinal is given only after the onset of active labour and before full dilation. It might lead to the use of forceps or vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery so many do not request it. General anaesthesia in pregnancy, on the other hand is done in the case of caesarean birth as a last resort.
Risks of Anesthesia in Pregnancy
In general, all effective surgery should be avoided during pregnancy due to the undue stress levels it will bring on the expectant mother and the unborn child. Even dental procedures and dental anaesthesia while pregnant should be avoided.
1. Risks for Pregnancy
There is an increased risk of spontaneous miscarriage due to the use of anaesthesia during the first trimester.
2. Risks to the Mother
The body starts adapting to the pregnancy, and the use of anaesthesia may not be able to cope with the effects of it on the already altered state of the mother leading to internal bleeding and other complications due to miscarriage.
3. Risks to the Foetus
The risks that are involved for the foetus include premature birth, low birth weight and infant mortality.
There are many facets to be examined before using anaesthesia on a pregnant woman. The advice of the doctor is vital before embarking on this process.

Experts Ask Parents to Build This One Daily Habit to Raise Smart, Successful and Happy Children
As parents, the future of our children is in our hands. We are their first teachers, and responsible for teaching them those early habits that build the foundation of their brain, personality and health.
With advancing scientific research in the field of child development, newer findings have come up to help parents. As per experts, while habits such as daily reading and playing with building blocks are significant in shaping a child’s development, there is one habit that no parent must overlook.
The Daily Habit Directly Linked to Overall Child Development
This may come as a surprise to many of us, but this simple habit is getting overlooked in today’s busy, chaotic world.
Child development experts have discovered that the habit of spending time outdoors for learning and play, on a daily basis, has a big role to play in the physical, cognitive as well as socio-emotional development of children.
They have also found that the lack of outdoor time can have a detrimental effect on child development and trigger the onset of physical as well as emotional problems. Recent research has found that 56% of children globally play outside for one hour or less each day. This is highly inadequate. The study further found that 56% of Indian parents themselves believe that their children have less opportunities to play than they did as a child.
Celebrating and inspiring outdoor learning and play is Outdoor Classroom Day, where thousands of schools around the world take lessons outdoors and prioritize playtime on this day. Let’s understand important aspects of outdoor time for kids and how you can join ‘Outdoor Classroom Day’ to set your child on his journey toward a happier future.
This is How Outdoor Play & Learning Shape a Child’s Future
A decade or so ago, children used to spend considerable time outdoors – in the playground, in parks, etc. – both in school and after school. But today, outdoor play time has shrunk dangerously. Children spend hour after hour engaged in academic pursuits in classrooms; almost half of India’s children have no playground at school. After school, children spend hours cooped up in front of the TV or computer. They are also occupied with indoor activities, tuition classes, and workshops to build skills.
While in the short term, all these activities seem necessary to equip them for the competitive world, not balancing them with outdoor time is slowly taking a toll on the health and development of children.
Here are some of the important benefits of outdoor play for kids, and why there is no alternative to access them:
1. Provides physical exercise
Spending time outdoors allows children to get ample physical exercise which is vital for their physical development. It is in the growing years that children learn muscle coordination, stamina and resilience.
2. Builds immunity
Outdoor time exposes children to natural elements such as the sunshine and wind, as also to germs and other agents in the air. Many parents today shy away from sending kids outdoors exactly due to this fear – the fear of catching an infection. However, it is this exposure that helps builds immunity in children and allows their bodies to learn how to fight off germs.
3. Exposes the brain to new stimuli
Did you know that 79% of children report that having time to play at school helps them to concentrate in lessons? Experts vouch for this too. Outdoor time exposes the brain to new stimuli and actually acts as a classroom! It is by spending time chasing butterflies, looking at trees, feeling the wind, collecting stones, etc., that children learn about the world around them. This helps sensitise them to their surroundings, boosts memory and attention span, and also builds creativity.
4. Builds social skills
Experts have noted that many children tend to struggle with making friends or expressing their emotions later in life. This can be traced back to lack of outdoor time growing up, which is a golden opportunity to socialise and spend time with other children of the same age.
Outdoor Classroom Day: A Simple Solution to Build This Habit in Children
So, how to instill outdoor time as a daily habit in children? It can become a struggle to unglue children from screens and encourage them to spend active, energetic time outdoors. To simplify this, we recommend you to join a wonderful initiative by Action for Children’s Environments (ACE), an NGO and charitable trust. ACE is organising an ‘Outdoor Classroom Day’ on Thursday, October 12, 2017, where children across India will have their lessons outside and come together to enjoy outdoor play time! More than 1112978 children in India have already joined the initiative.
The Outdoor Classroom Day is a global activity led by Project Dirt, in partnership with Unilever as part of their Dirt is Good movement. Last year, almost half a million children around the world joined the movement. And guess what, almost 92% of the participating schools agreed that the little ones showed high engagement when taught outdoors.
Dr. Sudeshna Chatterjee, CEO of ACE Trust said, “We’re calling on teachers, parents and anyone who cares about childhood to get involved in the campaign on October 12th, 2017. Whether that’s by taking a class outdoors, encouraging your child’s school to sign up, or helping spread the message far and wide, everyone can do something to make sure children across the country experience the benefits of playing and learning outdoors.”
Isn’t that a wonderful way to help children cherish the world of outdoors? The best part is that it will help introduce children to the wonders of the natural world as well as help them see their studies in a whole new light.
How to Join the Outdoor Classroom Day on Oct 12
Talk with your child’s teachers about the Outdoor Classroom Day and tell them why you think the school should participate. You can always pitch in for support; your kids will also love you for it! You can sign up here.
If you are also involved with teaching children, you can join in and let your kids have the chance to experience learning outdoors. You can conduct regular lessons for the day outdoors and supplement the lesson with riveting activities that let the kids experience various natural elements like leaves, flowers, water, etc. Here are some fun outdoor activities for kids to help you get started.
You can make this a weekly activity for your children. Once every week, encourage learning outdoors, whether it is doing homework in the garden, working on a nature project, or simply going on a nature walk.
Can you think of any more ideas to encourage outdoor time in children? Do tell us in the comments. Don’t forget to share your experiences with us if you and your children also celebrate the Outdoor Classroom Day. Read more

What Kind of Wife Are You?
The old ball-and-chain marriage jokes have been doing the rounds since forever. Your husband seems to be happy enough with you but sometimes you ponder upon the kind of wife you are? Loving, dominating, crazy, or all-in-one? Well, we’ve created a list for you to find out!
If you were to choose an adjective to describe your wifely qualities, what would it be? You think you’re a mixed bag of everything so pinpointing one is difficult. Not anymore! Find out what kind of wife you are by checking which category describes you the closest.
What Kind of a Wife Are You?
1. Dominating Wife
Understanding whether dominating fits the bill is easy. Is your motto “my way or the highway”? If yes, you can do anything to have things work as you want. Though you don’t employ Hitler’s coercion techniques, your subtle cajoling is aimed to get the same result. Smart moves, we say.
2. Possessive Wife
Your man is yours alone. No other woman is allowed to bask in his attention or even catch his eyes. You feel bereft if you don’t have constant updates on his activities. The jealous wife in you would probably appreciate gifting him a set of horse blinders and make him use it every time he steps out of home!
3. Supportive Wife
You’re the rock that your partner can lean on whenever things get rough. You are caring, patient, and extremely supportive of him no matter what the situation. If the crisis is a financial one, you don’t think twice before taking on the role of a responsible wife and helping him out.
4. Independent Wife
You were born to be free. You hate bindings of any kind and hold your independence over everything else. You’re a modern woman who doesn’t subscribe to the conventional rules of how a wife should be. You make, break, and re-make your rules to suit your life.
5. Martyr Wife
You love sacrificing your happiness for others, true to the traditional “me-last” philosophy women have always been taught. It’s nice that you want to bring joy to other’s lives, but you cannot light candles when your flame is blown out right? Make sure you start thinking about yourself too or you'll turn into a melodramatic and depressed wife. Oops!
6. Cranky Wife
Your husband tiptoes around you as he doesn’t know what might get on your nerves or hurt you. You can’t help it if you’re over-sensitive, can you? Tears are your best friend (and your secret weapon) any time you want to get your way.
7. Clingy Wife
You got married young or maybe you never really put much faith in yourself from the start. Either way, you find that you are uncomfortable without your man by your side. You prefer the familiarity of your home and dread having to step out into the big bad world.
Unable to find which of the different types of wives you are? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Most of the wives out there are actually type 8 - complete sweethearts who go about filling their homes with happiness and joy! We are sure you’re a little bit of everything and that’s what makes you special. Everyone appreciates the all-in-one kind of wife that you are! Read more

My Baby's Experience With HFMD and How We Overcame It
I found out about HFMD (Hand Foot Mouth Disease) recently, when my little one (4 months old) began to cry, without stopping, one day. His head felt extremely hot, and I thought, as we had taken him to a hill station for his first outing, just a day earlier, the climate change and exposure to nature may have made him like this. The next day, he refused to take formula milk in the afternoon, and a moment later, breast milk, too. My whole concentration, then, was my little one. Around 7.pm he started to cry, so I decided to feed him milk in a bottle, but when he was about to drink, he cried out loud. Thus, I understood that he was, indeed, hungry but couldn't suck the nipple of bottle. There was a strike going on at the time, and all private doctors wouldn't be available for consultation until the next morning. I called one of my friends, a homeopathic doctor, and she said it was a sore throat, as his symptoms showed, and to try feeding him warm water. However, when I tried to do so, he began to cry, the moment the spoon touched his tongue, and wouldn't stop crying for the next one and a half hours. He was tired and sucked a bit, and I noticed some pink coloured rashes on his legs, like mosquito bites. However, I was more focused on his discomfort in drinking milk. After a whole night of crying, my mother, brother, and me took my baby to the hospital at 6:30 in the morning, and we consulted our family paediatrician. He examined him, and discovered it is HFMD. His mouth was full of sores, which was why he couldn't drink anything. Spots even began to appear on his hands. The doctor gave him a suppository to clean his bowels, after which my baby slept for an hour. However, he refused to eat even after he woke up. Finally, I took the help of a filler to feed my baby milk, drop by drop. Thankfully, he was slowly able to drink that. Though a large intake of fluids is necessary for HFMD, my baby was too young. The doctor prescribed calamine lotion to apply to the sores, which I did, and my baby's spots did not turn into blisters. Though HFMD can also bring blisters, there's nothing to worry about. Just give your baby plenty of fluids, make him rest more, apply lotions prescribed by the physician, and wait 3 days for the spot to get healed, and you will definitely see the change in your baby.

A. Hello there ma’am please do not worry about it too much and it is quite difficult to say anything about it without personally examination and proper reports evaluation. So better to consult with your treating gynaecologist in person as she knew the exact health condition of your pregnancy and can guide you better.
Take care
