Smelly Urine During Pregnancy - Reasons and Remedies
Your body undergoes several changes during pregnancy. While a few are expected as a routine part of pregnancy, some changes might need medical attention. Smelly urine is one of the common problems associated with pregnancy. Foul-smelling urine during pregnancy can prove to be uncomfortable and embarrassing for most women. You may notice the occurrence of smelly urine during the first trimester of pregnancy, or even towards the later stages.
What Causes Smelly Urine in Pregnancy?
There could be many reasons for strong-smelling urine during pregnancy that are pregnancy-related; some of these will need a doctor’s attention. Here are a few common causes of smelly urine during pregnancy:
1. A Heightened Sense of Smell
During pregnancy, your hormone levels are on the rise and even a subtle change in urine odour will be noticeable to you. This increased sensitivity to smells can cause you to think that your urine now has a strong smell.
2. Dehydration
Urine has little to no odour in general, but it contains ammonia that gets diluted by the water you drink. Not drinking enough water can lead to the concentration of urine which can emit a strong smell. Consuming less water can be the cause of dehydration which is not healthy for you or the baby.
3. Urinary Infections
Urinary tract infection is a common infection that occurs during pregnancy and is often the reason for foul-smelling urine. UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) also causes fever, back pain, and pain during urination.
4. Vaginal Infections
A vaginal infection called bacterial vaginosis (BV) can cause smelly urine and is often noticed when urine mixes with vaginal secretions. This fishy-smelling odour can be embarrassing at times, but more importantly, BV could increase the chances of going into labour early.
5. Urine Leakage
The bladder tissues and the urethra become slightly relaxed during pregnancy, which causes some amount of involuntary urine leakage. Also known as urinary incontinence, this condition is heightened when you laugh or sneeze at a time when you’re holding in urine. Strong-smelling urine is an early pregnancy symptom as it begins as early as the first trimester of pregnancy.
6. Diet
Inclusion of foods like broccoli and asparagus in your daily diet can also be a cause of strong-smelling urine. Consider eating smaller portions of such items if you have smelly urine.
7. Taking Supplements
As a pregnant woman, you will be advised to consume supplements that will help your pregnancy. However, consuming supplements can cause your urine to smell. Consult with your doctor before you take any supplements. Do not take unnecessary supplements, and enrich your diet with foods that are rich in iron, calcium, and folic acid.
How to Treat Urine Odour During Pregnancy
There are a few simple and easy treatments for smelly urine during pregnancy. They are:
1. Stay Hydrated
During pregnancy, your body’s demand for water increases. Hence, it is very important to remain hydrated throughout the day. It will surely increase the frequency of urination, but it will also address the demands of your body for water. It will dilute your urine, flush out the bacteria, and reduce the chances of any foul smell.
2. Keep Yourself Clean
It is important to maintain personal hygiene in the genital area in order to reduce the unpleasant smell of urine. The remnants of urine can linger on your clothes and undergarments and can cause an unpleasant smell along with bacterial growth. Clean yourself thoroughly while bathing and every time you visit the washroom. Using a pH-balanced wash is highly recommended in such cases.
3. Medical Treatment
Speak to your doctor regarding this condition. Based on the severity, they may prescribe an anti-bacterial treatment or non-teratogenic drugs to address urine odour. Antibiotics are often prescribed for urine infections.
4. Urinate Often
During pregnancy or even otherwise, one should not hold in urine for long periods. You should urinate whenever you feel the urge instead of waiting for a full bladder. This ensures that the urine is never concentrated, thus reducing the chances of having a foul smell.
5. Get Regular Checkups
It is important to check if strong-smelling urine is accompanied by any other symptoms. If yes, the reasons could be problems related to the kidney and bladder, or sexually transmitted diseases and infections.
6. Increase Intake of Vitamin C
By adding vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables into your diet, it is possible to avoid urinary tract infections (UTI). Fruits like oranges, kiwis, and grapefruits are rich in vitamin C and can help keep that strong odour away.
Although smelly urine isn’t life-threatening, you should address the problem as soon as you notice it. Also, it is important to check if you have any other symptoms along with smelly urine as they can indicate other serious problems.

Top 10 Natural Remedies to Manage High BP During Pregnancy
High Bp is common during pregnancy, but how to control it becomes a problem for women. As, nowadays the medicines available in the market consists of chemicals and toxins, which we haven't heard of, hence opting for natural remedies for treating and managing common conditions is safe. Some of the natural treatments include Ayurveda or Homeopathy and others can be alternative medication methods like Chinese medicine or Tibetan medicine. Most alternative or natural remedies have no regulatory body, this makes it hard to know if these techniques and cures are real or not. This is why thorough research is required before attempting to add any form of natural treatment to your regiment, especially when you are pregnant. Here is a list of 10 remedies that are recommended for you to manage your high blood pressure during your pregnancy.
Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure (BP) in Pregnancy
It is extremely important that we do our research when choosing natural products to lower high blood pressure during pregnancy. It is a must to consult a doctor without taking any step. Some methods of lowering your blood pressure may be dangerous when you are pregnant but can be considered safe when you aren’t. It is vital that you communicate with your doctor about these methods in order to ensure it doesn’t harm your body instead of helping it. Additionally, we recommend any home remedies act as a supplement to medication rather than a replacement.
1. Exercise
One of the most efficient ways of managing your blood pressure at home is through exercise, it doesn’t have to be extremely intense but a solid 30 mins. of exercise is known to greatly help your body remain healthy and help your immune system become stronger. Additionally, exercise relaxes the muscles, tones your body, and regulates blood flow. Regular exercise is considered a requirement to regulate your blood pressure and blood sugar levels as well. This is not so much a remedy as it is a lifestyle requirement that when done at home helps maintain stable blood pressure levels. An added boost of exercise during pregnancy is it helps make the delivery easier, manages pain better, and helps with pregnancy-based fatigue.
2. Control Sodium Intake
One of the most natural ways to help control and cure your blood pressure is by limiting or eliminating salt from your diet. When you are pregnant, your hormones are extremely imbalanced, this hurts your immune system and it also lowers the efficiency of your body’s natural functions. This means processing and digesting salt or salty foods becomes much more difficult and if the salt isn’t digested properly or is excessive in your diet, it can cause a spike in blood pressure. The reduction of salt also enhances your body’s energy levels during your pregnancy and works as an immunity booster. Unless a doctor specifically instructs you to eliminate salt, we recommend reducing its intake as salt has many natural minerals which, in moderation is healthy for you.
3. Eat Bananas
Eating a banana or two a day is extremely beneficial during pregnancy, not only is it a digestive aid and natural laxative, but it is also rich in potassium. This makes it extremely healthy for anyone with high blood pressure.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar or ACV is one of the healthiest ingredients and it has been proven to help maintain a balanced cholesterol level. It is also known to help balance your blood pressure. Consuming unpasteurized ACV is considered extremely healthy. Be warned though, undiluted ACV can be extremely acidic and can burn your oesophagus or food pipe and even damage your stomach, it is recommended that you consume one tablespoon of ACV every day with a glass of warm water and honey instead.
5. Magnesium
As per a study, by the Journal of the Indian medical association in 2011, magnesium helps manage extreme blood pressure issues. In fact, recently most medical professionals recommend that pregnant women should eat foods rich in magnesium, like tofu, avocados, bananas, almonds, and soy milk because magnesium not only helps maintain a healthy level of blood pressure, it also plays a huge role in maintaining the integrity of the uterus during pregnancy by preventing it from contracting prematurely.
6. De-stress
When you’re pregnant, anxiety, depression and stress are common, these are also the leading cause of high blood pressure. Practice activities that help you relax, it is recommended that women who are pregnant listen to music for 30 mins for at least 3 times a day, practice prenatal yoga and get prenatal massages to help manage stress. It is recommended that you pick music that is slow, has a rhythm that is relaxing and soothing like jazz, blues, or classical music.
7. Limit Alcohol Intake
The complications of alcohol during pregnancy are so immense that doctors recommend you skip any alcoholic beverages for the entire period, high blood pressure is one of the many reasons behind this. Alcohol intake can complicate any pregnancy for a number of reasons, if you have to have a drink, we recommend 10ml of wine a month.
8. Don’t Smoke
Much like alcohol, the downside of smoking is the intense side-effects it has on your body, even when you aren’t pregnant, it can lead to cancer, weight gain, anxiety, depression, and high blood pressure. When you are pregnant, these risks more than quadruple. So, it is best to quit smoking when you are pregnant.
9. Avoid Caffeine
Caffeine is one of the leading causes of high blood pressure, we recommend you limit or quit caffeine during your pregnancy to maintain a healthy BP level.
10. Avoid Junk Food
Junk food is usually packed with preservatives and is known for being extremely unhealthy. While it may satiate your cravings, it is not a great source of nutrition. So, avoid junk food during your pregnancy to remain healthy and control your blood pressure.
These 10 home remedies for high blood pressure are not cures for the people with genetic BP issues, if your doctor feels you need blood pressure medication then we recommend using these techniques to supplement the medication. Consult your doctor before adding or removing any routine from your life during your pregnancy. Under no circumstance should you attempt to go off medication unless your doctor suggests you. These methods are also great for general blood pressure control. We strongly recommend that you do your research with any method not mentioned above to control your blood pressure, as some unregulated techniques and diets can be dangerous for you.

Rice Milk for Babies and Toddlers - Is It a Healthier Alternative?
Many mothers wonder if there is a good alternative to the formula that can be given to their babies. Some children find cow’s milk indigestible. Certain other children are allergic to cow’s milk. In such cases, mothers struggle with what to mix into their baby’s morning cereal or what to give them with their evening snack. Some parents make do with almond or soy milk, but there are still others who could be allergic to nuts and soy. In this article, we discuss rice milk as a vegan, lactose-free option for your children. Read on to understand the benefits and associated risks of rice milk.
What is Rice Milk?
Rice milk is made from grains of rice. It is obtained by running rice through a mill and then using diffusion to remove the granules after pressing. The other option is to use rice flour with protein from brown rice. Rice milk has a naturally sweet taste that comes from the conversion of carbohydrates into sugars. Rice milk mainly constitutes of carbohydrates as rice does too. Rice milk for a toddler with milk allergy has been found to be a safe and welcome alternative.
Nutritional Facts of Rice Milk
Rice milk has the highest amount of carbohydrates, sugars, and calories as compared to any other kind of milk (apart from cow's milk). Each cup of rice milk contains the following nutritional value:

Is Rice Milk Safe for Infants and Toddlers?
While rice milk may be a safe option for children with allergies, it is not a healthy recommendation for infants who should be fed with breastmilk or formula. Rice milk is one of the few kinds of milk that is not likely to cause allergies. However, it is not a source of calcium or Vitamin B12 as it is plant-based milk. Parents who do not have any other milk options for their toddlers should definitely opt for rice milk while the recommendation by experts is to alternate it with better sources of fat and nutrition.
Benefits of Giving Rice Milk to Your Child
Here are some known benefits of rice milk:
Rice milk is the least allergenic alternative because it is lactose-free and doesn’t contain the risk of nuts. Rice milk for a toddler with a milk allergy is a safe option, and it lets you continue with some form of milk in your child’s diet.
It is sweeter than other milk alternatives because of its sugar content.
It can be fortified easily with vitamins and calcium.
It is a vegan source of milk.
It has absolutely no cholesterol and is one of the best options for non-fatty milk.
It is a wonderful remedy to treat diarrhoea because children with diarrhoea cannot be given dairy products. Rice milk for diarrhoea is a safe food that can be easily digested by your baby.
Possible Risks of Giving Rice Milk to Babies and Toddlers
Although rice milk is a non-allergenic type of milk, it has a few potential risks too.
Rice milk has no protein and is not the ideal replacement for cow’s milk. Kids usually get a healthy dose of protein with their daily glass of cow's milk, which they may miss out on with rice milk.
Rice as produce contains inorganic arsenic. While it is not a cause of concern in older children and adults, rice milk with arsenic content can cause damage to your baby’s brain development. Brown rice, especially, contains more arsenic compared to white rice.
Rice milk usually contains salt, water, oil, and rice. It has no nutrition like iron or trace minerals.
Children (mostly under the age of 2) require full fat in their milk, but rice milk has no fat content.
As it is high in carbohydrates and sugars, it cannot be used for children with juvenile diabetes.
No alternate source of milk is recommended for infants below 12 months of age, especially rice milk, as it is of very little nutritional value and can lead to potentially irreparable nutritional deficiencies.
How to Make Rice Milk?
Rice milk can be used for many purposes, like in smoothies, cereals, for cooking, baking, and for drinking. Here is an easy method to prepare rice milk for kids at home. This recipe yields 8 cups of rice milk. You can fortify this drink at home by mixing calcium powder, or other supplements as you like.
What You Will Need
Cooked brown rice- 1 cup
Water- 4 cups
Honey- 1 tablespoon
Flavouring; eg: vanilla- ½ tsp
Pinch of salt
How to Prepare
Cook the brown rice with a pinch of salt as per instructions on the package.
Mix the cooked brown rice and all the water with flavouring and sweetener.
Blend it on a high setting until the water looks white.
Strain well, using a muslin cloth or a fine sieve to separate the grains.
Store it in the refrigerator for future use.
Other Cow Milk Alternatives That Are Safe for Children
There are several alternatives to dairy milk which can be used safely for older children. Some of them are:
1. Almond Milk
Almond milk is made from ground almonds mixed with water. Almond milk is a good source of vitamin A, albeit a poor source of calcium and protein. It is lactose-free and low in calories.
2. Soy Milk
Soy milk is sourced from soya beans. Like other plant-based milk, it is not a good source of Vitamin B12. It does, however, contain proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. It is free of cholesterol and is very low in saturated fats.
3. Coconut Milk
Coconut milk, made from coconut cream and water, is a wonderful source of fats, carbohydrates and calories. It is a good option for children with nut allergies as well.
4. Hemp Milk
Hemp milk is derived from hemp seeds, which produce marijuana. It had a few good benefits like being a good source of protein and vitamins. It is also a wonderful source of Omega-3 & 6 fatty acids.
A parent knows instinctively what is best for their baby. However, if you are unable to give your baby cow’s milk due to allergies, discuss your options with your baby’s paediatrician before you start him off on a substitute like rice milk.
