Bottle Feeding Advantages and Disadvantages
Bottle feeding is different from breastfeeding in that the baby is fed from a bottle. Either breast milk or formula milk can be bottle-fed.
What Are the Pros of Bottle Feeding?
The upsides of bottle feeding are:
1. Anyone can feed the baby.
One of the benefits of bottle feeding is that either parent can feed the baby. Feeding is an important bonding moment; breastfeeding doesn’t give the daddy an opportunity to bond with the baby. Bottle feeding allows the siblings, father and other family members to spend some time with the newborn baby.
2. It can be done in public.
For some moms, breastfeeding in public can be embarrassing. If you don’t want to expose your breasts or go to a private area for breastfeeding, bottle feeding is the way to go!
3. Keeping a track of your baby’s intake is easy.
It isn’t easy to know how much milk your baby is drinking when you breastfeed. Bottle feeding helps you find out your baby’s daily milk intake.
4. You don’t have to worry if your breast milk supply is low.
Many moms worry that their baby will remain underfed if their breast milk supply is insufficient. In such a case, parents can resort to bottle feeding. This ensures that your baby gets all the milk he needs to grow and develop.
5. You don’t have to worry about making changes to your diet.
A mother who feeds formula milk to her baby doesn’t have to worry about adding specific fruits and veggies to her diet. She can eat and drink anything she likes.
6. Bottle feeding helps babies who have lactose intolerance.
In rare cases, infants cannot process breast milk or animal milk. This situation is known as lactose intolerance. Then, suitable formula milk, such as soy protein, can be fed from a bottle.
7. The mother’s health condition doesn’t affect the baby
If the mother falls ill after childbirth or faces health issues that don’t let breastfeed,a bottle can be used to feed the baby.
What Are the Cons of Bottle Feeding?
The disadvantages of bottle feeding are:
1. Breast milk is more nutritious.
Breast milk has all the nutrients that your baby requires to grow and develop. It is also light on the stomach than formula milk. Bottle feeding may increase the risk of obesity in early childhood.
2. Prepare the milk for bottle feeding takes time and effort.
You can breastfeed your baby on demand. But if you’ve habituated your baby to bottle feeding, you need to wash and sterilise the bottle, pour milk into the bottle and warm it. It’s a lot of work! Improper sterilisation can also your infant’s health at risk.
3. Bottle feeding equipment are an added expense.
You’ll need to buy feeding bottles, a cleaning brush and also a steriliser. You’ll also have to invest in a good-quality breast pump or formula milk powder. This is an added expense to your monthly budget.
4. Bottle feeding may compromise your baby’s immune system.
Studies show that breast milk develops and improves your baby’s immune system. Formula milk, on the other hand, doesn’t contain vital and natural nutrients. Formula-fed babies also carry the risk of developing certain illnesses like chest infection, ear infection, urine infection or diarrhoea.
5. It affects the mother-baby bonding.
Feeding is a bonding moment for the mother and the child. When she latches on to your breasts, skin-to-skin contact is established. Bottle feeding may hamper this bonding.
6. Bottle feeding is inconvenient.
You’ll have to carry clean bottles, formula milk, baby nipples, and other necessities while travelling. It can be troublesome to manage the things as well as the baby at the same time. Bottle feeding is also inconvenient if your baby requires midnight feeding sessions as you have to get up and prepare the milk each time.
7. Breastfeeding keeps the mother healthy.
Some studies have proved that moms who choose to breastfeed rather than bottle feed reduce their chances of suffering from breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis.
8. Your baby may not take to formula milk.
For some babies, formula milk fed from a bottle may not be suitable. They may experience diarrhoea and a loss of fluids from the body.
9. Bottle feeding puts your baby at the risk of SIDS.
Studies have shown that breastfeeding can help to prevent babies from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Bottle feeding has its own pros and cons. You should carefully consider both sides of the situation before settling on the method of feeding your baby. The aim is to ensure that your baby is neither underfed nor overfed and gets the essential vitamins and nutrients while she adapts to the world around her.

10 Common Pregnancy Problems In First Trimester
It is said that pregnancy is the best time of a woman’s life. It involves pampering, indulgence, and immense support from one’s partner and family. Most pregnancies see a smooth sailing and are uncomplicated. However, it is essential to know what the most common risks are that pregnant women face during their first trimester. You will go through a series of tests, ultrasounds, and physical exams so that your doctor may rule out any complications or address any concerns promptly.
An expecting mother is more susceptible to risks as the body is undergoing tremendous change to accommodate a new life. Certain parts of the expectant mother’s immune system have heightened activity while some parts are suppressed to accommodate this enormous change. Here is a look at the top complications that are a possibility during your first trimester of pregnancy. The body goes into overdrive to support two lives that are amalgamated within the to-be-mother.
Pregnancy Complications in the First Trimester
There is a significant change in the hormonal activity during the first trimester. This change is essential but brings with it complications like fatigue or nausea. While these are low risk and are more bothersome than dangerous, there are a few serious complications that you should be aware of. We have mentioned them below:
1. Miscarriage
It is unfortunate that about 10-15 per cent of pregnancies conclude in a miscarriage. Of these, it is reported that around 80% happen during the first trimester. Miscarriage during early pregnancy can be caused by infections, chromosomal abnormalities, clotting disorders, or anatomic problems with the uterus. Eating a balanced diet, appropriate exercise, avoiding alcohol and cigarettes should help sustain your pregnancy.
2. Ectopic pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilised egg gets implanted outside the uterus. One in 50 of all pregnancies could be an ectopic one. Most ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tube and may cause the tube to rupture. This can be fatal as it causes internal bleeding.
3. Constipation and Diarrhoea
Stomach problems during pregnancy first trimester are not uncommon. Usually, women experience mild to severe constipation due to changes in diet and incorporation of iron-rich foods. This may sometimes cause haemorrhoids and bloody stools. Diarrhoea that lasts more than 3-4 days should be reported to the doctor, or it could lead to dehydration and weakness. Continue to have a balanced diet and drink copious amounts of water. In rare cases, diarrhoea can be a result of food poisoning. It should be treated immediately if it doesn’t resolve within 24 hours.
4. Multiple and Twin Pregnancy Complications
30% of mums carrying twins or multiple foetuses are known to have vaginal bleeding. Twin pregnancy complications in the first trimester include vanishing twin, where one baby is lost to a miscarriage during the pregnancy. The embryo that is lost is usually reabsorbed into the uterine lining without any noticeable symptoms to the expectant mother. Up to 30 per cent of multiple pregnancies face the vanishing twin syndrome. It is detected because the mother has usually had early scans that showed dual embryos.
5. Vaginal Discharges or Itching
Vaginal discharge is a regularity in a woman’s life. Nothing is alarming about a little vaginal discharge unless it has an odour or is coloured yellowish. Additionally, if there is itching or redness, it could indicate an infection. A more serious concern is if the itching indicates an STD that could be transmitted to the baby.
6. Painful Urination
A urinary tract infection is a bane in every woman’s life. During pregnancy, a woman becomes highly susceptible to Urinary Tract Infection. The changes that pregnancy causes to the urinary tract makes it very easy for a pregnant woman to contract a UTI. Additionally, the pressure from the uterus prevents the bladder from completely draining and this causes infection. If you leave a UTI untreated, it can lead to kidney infection or early labour.
7. Difficulty Breathing
Increased levels of progesterone during the first trimester contributes to shortness of breath. Working slowly, sitting up straight, and sleeping on propped up pillows might help with easing breathing problems during the first trimester of pregnancy. Once you're past the first trimester, the shortness of breath usually occurs around the third trimester when your uterus pushes up against the diaphragm and lungs, making it difficult to take a deep breath. If wheezing, palpitations, or coughing accompany shortness of breath, then you should let your doctor know immediately. They may be able to tell the difference between plain shortness of breath and other complications.
8. Spotting or Vaginal Bleeding
Implantation bleeding is common in pregnancy and is nothing to get alarmed about. There are, however, other reasons like cervical polyps that can lead to spotting and bleeding. Rupture of a tubal pregnancy, as in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, can also cause a fatal bleed.
9. Calf Pain & Headache
Calf pains during the first trimester are not very common. Hormonal changes combined with exhaustion can be credited with this. But pain on one side alone could be an indicator of a travelling blood clot. Pregnancy increases the chances of developing clots. A clot in the head could cause severe headaches. Clots that form in leg veins are known as Deep Vein Thrombosis. Staying active and improving blood circulation reduces the chances of blood clots and cramps.
10. Nausea & Vomiting
Morning sickness is the most common affliction that affects a pregnant woman during her first trimester. It affects different women differently. For some people, it could be extreme, and it increases the risk of dehydration. Some women cannot hold down anything that they eat. It may lead to reduced nutrition for the mother and foetus. Doctors may recommend some medication to regulate nausea and prevent dehydration in extreme cases.
11. Fatigue & Insomnia
Pregnant women, during the first trimester, experience a massive slump in the quality of sleep. Pregnancy sleep problems in the first trimester could be attributed to the fatigue and extreme exhaustion that women feel throughout the day. It could also be attributed to heartburn and bathroom breaks at night.
12. Temperature above 101°F
A fever that crosses 101°F could be a sign of an underlying infection. This could invariably affect the foetus, and it should be checked. Fever accompanied by rash or joint pain could be parvovirus or Toxoplasma. There is also a minor chance that it could indicate cytomegalovirus which is a reason for congenital deafness. The chances of risk to the infant occur when a pregnant woman has recurrent CMV infection.
13. Swelling
After 20 weeks of pregnancy, swelling is considered to be normal in most women. This is caused by a change in blood volume and blood flow, allowing fluids to be trapped in the tissues around the extremities. But swelling in the first trimester, especially in the face and hands could be an indicator of preeclampsia. Always consult your doctor if in doubt about such things.
Pregnant women might face any number of discomforts ranging from slight dizziness to mild pelvic pain. Once past the 12 weeks mark, discomforts like nausea and vomiting will reduce or completely stop. Expectant mothers will now be asked to get scans and tests done in each trimester to rule out any other complication like Down’s syndrome in the foetus, preeclampsia, placenta previa, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or low amniotic fluid.
Bear in mind that although we have listed one too many complications that mothers-to-be should watch out for, pregnancy is one of the most naturally beautiful phases in a woman’s life. There are many positives about being pregnant like hearing baby’s first heartbeat, feeling that first movement, the first kick, the glow and radiance of being pregnant, and the arrival of those tiny fingers and toes after 10 months. So, be watchful and heed any medical advice from your doctor but remember to relax and enjoy these months before your entire life becomes about your tiny tot.

Newborn Physical Development: First Three Months
With your newborn in your lap now, you must be celebrating the bliss of motherhood. Giving birth to a healthy baby is an accomplishment and you can help your baby grow even stronger and healthier if you know how he is expected to develop during the first three months.
After waiting eagerly for nine months, a new life is finally in your arms. It is a magical moment which is hard to forget. You would certainly cherish watching your baby’s new activities in the first three months. From his divine smile to his first struggles for raising his head lying on his stomach, you are going to witness many pleasant moments during these three months. This phase is also crucial to develop a strong mother-baby bond too.
Let’s see how your little one is expected to be growing and developing physically, day-by-day during the first 3 months.
Newborn Weight Gain
Healthy weight gain is the first thing that is of concern to the parents and the baby’s pediatrician. It is vital for the baby’s growth that she gains strength through proper weight gain. However, your baby could lose 5% to 7% of his birth-weight during the first week, which is completely normal and quite expected. Soon enough most babies start gaining 4oz to 8oz weight per week and grow tall by about 1 in. to 1.5 in. This weight gain depends on many factors like the baby’s birth weight, his appetite, frequency of stools etc. As long as your newborn does not lose any weight in the following weeks and keeps gaining some weight within the range, there is no reason to be concerned.
Control Over Movements
Newborns do not have any control over their bodies and their movements. For the first few weeks, they randomly flail their limbs around. By the end of 3 months, they can be expected to try to lift their heads and turn their heads in a particular direction in an attempt to look at some object or your face. Your baby may try to move hands in coordination to grasp your finger or a toy. His hands and legs will still remain curled up except when he is kicking and waving them.
Newborn Language Development
While your baby is not ready to raise a toast at a party yet, he can certainly try to respond to your ‘Parentese’ by cooing and smiling. That means he is trying to record your baby talks, so that he can learn and reproduce it later. Although remember that not all babies can smile by the time they are 3 months old, some babies do take their time.
Newborn Sensory Development
Your baby has all 5 senses from the birth, just that they are yet to reach their full potential. Babies can recognize touch very well; they also can recognize tastes and tend to like sweet taste more. Their hearing is still improving. They may try to turn their head towards a loud noise, may start crying after hearing a startling noise and can be soothed with a gentle crooning of a lullaby.
Your newborn’s sight sense is the last to develop. Initially he can see the objects that are closest to him.
Gradually throughout the first 3 months, his eyes start recording, remembering and differentiating between objects. He will try to look at one particular object, but not for more than a few seconds. Your baby’s sight is attracted at bright, bold objects and colors the most, but he also starts noticing less prominent objects by the end of 3 months. Your baby being able to look into your eyes, finally, could feel very rewarding for you.
How You Can Encourage Your Newborn’s Development?
Interact with your baby as much as you can. Talk, sing, cuddle, play, massage and listen to the music.
Hang a colorful mobile over your baby’s crib. Show him different objects and say the names of those objects.
Look into his eyes when you talk to him and show various kinds of expressions on your face.
Let your baby play with rattles that make different sounds.
Let him touch his toys, your car keys, his feeding bottle, his blanket.
It is a fact that the more you interact with your baby, the faster he develops. This doesn’t have to be a teaching experience for you. You will tap into many amazing skills within yourself as you see your baby develop all the important life skills for himself. Read more

Vaginal Ring - A Birth Control Option
Fertility control medications or devices have been on the market for many years. With time, they have evolved to incorporate new advances in medical science to provide effective and safe birth control. One of the recently developed contraceptive devices for women is the vaginal ring, which has attracted a lot of attention. It is a device that delivers the contraceptive hormones into the vagina and offers effective protection against unplanned pregnancy. This article talks about the various aspects of using a vaginal ring in detail.
What is Vaginal Ring
Vaginal ring, as the name suggests is a ring-shaped structure that is meant for insertion into the vagina. It is made of soft plastic material and is coated with hormones that prevent women from conceiving. This simple contraceptive device is marketed under various brand names and is easily available in any family planning centre.
How Does it Work
The vaginal ring works by preventing the process of fertilization. The ring that gets inserted into the vagina, is coated with a combination of the hormones, estrogen and progestin. Both these hormones are absorbed into the reproductive system through the lining of the vagina and act in a threefold way to prevent conception.
Similar to contraceptive pills, these hormones prevent ovulation or the process of formation of the egg.
It increases the thickness of the mucous layer in the cervix, thereby obstructing the path of the sperm to enter the uterus.
It thins down the endometrial layer inside the uterus. A thick uterine wall is imperative for a fertilized egg to attach and grow. By preventing the thickening, the vaginal ring also ensures that the fertilized zygote does not implant itself for further differentiation.
Usage Guidelines
The vaginal ring is used throughout the month except for the time when menstruation occurs. This effectively means three weeks of wearing the ring and one week of the ring-free period for allowing menstruation. Once the menstrual cycle gets over, a new ring is inserted back to provide protection from unintended pregnancy.
1. How to Insert
Inserting and using the vaginal ring is very simple. Some precautions to be taken before inserting the ring are to sanitize the hands before opening the ring and also to check if the ring is within its validity period for usage. To insert the vaginal ring, open the sterile packet and squeeze the ring in such a way that the opposite sides touch each other. In this position, tease the ring inside the vagina and release it to take up its circular position.
2. How to Remove
For removal of the ring, insert your sanitized hands inside the vagina and gently tug the ring to dislodge it. Pull it out gently and pack it in the original packing material to dispose of it in the sanitary waste. Flushing the ring down the toilet is not recommended.
3. How to Use the Ring if You Want to Get Periods
The vaginal ring can be used to regulate the menstrual cycle, just like a contraceptive pill. To get your periods, insert your ring for a period of three weeks and remove it on the exact same day of the week you inserted the ring. You will get your periods soon after you remove it. Typically after the period gets over, you can insert a new ring. After insertion of the new ring, if there is mild bleeding, it is ok to retain the ring while using a sanitary pad or tampon. Care must be taken to not use a menstrual cup as they interfere with the placement of the ring.
4. How to Use the Ring to Skip Your Periods
The vaginal ring gives you the privilege of altering and restructuring your menstrual cycle. The technique is very simple and you can discuss the details with your doctor. If you wish to avoid periods for a particular month, you can continue to wear the ring for four weeks instead of just three weeks. At the end of the fourth week, on the same day of the week on which you inserted the ring, you can replace it with a new one. Mild spotting or bleeding is usually found when the ring is used to skip the periods and there is no proven harmful effect with this method.
How Effective is the Birth Control Ring
By far, it is one of the most effective contraceptive methods available in the market with a working effectiveness percentage of about 91%. The crucial aspect of using a ring is the prompt maintenance of the time of insertion and removal.
How to Make the Ring Work Best for You
To make the best of this birth control device, the following aspects need to be kept in mind while using it.
You should follow the three-week insertion and one-week removal rule diligently to increase the efficiency of the ring as a birth control method.
Insert and remove the ring on the same day of the week. For example, if you inserted it on a Monday, make sure to remove it on Monday that falls after the completion of three weeks. This way, the cycle is maintained properly.
Inserting it with sterile hands is important in order to prevent any form of vaginal infection.
Although there is no perfect position for inserting the ring, a proper insertion deep inside the vagina can prevent accidental slipping of the ring.
Who Can Use the Contraception Ring
The contraception ring is suitable for use by women of all ethnicities and ages. Unless there are any medical conditions which hinder the use of the ring, everyone can use it without any problem. Women who have given birth to a baby can start using it after the 21st day of delivery. However, the ring can reduce the flow of breast milk in feeding mothers and hence should be avoided during the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding. It can also be used right after an episode of abortion or miscarriage without any extra contraception.
Who Should Avoid Using Birth Control Ring
Although suitable for most women, the use of the vaginal ring should be avoided by women who have
A cardiac problem
A clot in the veins or arteries
A habit of smoking and have crossed the age of 35
Breast cancer
Diabetes
Obesity issues
A vagina that is either too big or small for the ring to fit
Advantages of Vaginal Ring
The vaginal ring, apart from providing effective contraception, also has some other benefits, like,
Helping in reducing menstrual cramps and pre-menstrual syndromes
Lighter menstrual bleeding
No serious side effects
Reduced risk of some cancers
It is very easy to insert and does not require any day to day follow up. It also does not interfere with the sexual pleasure, making it a very convenient device for birth control.
Risks and Side Effects of Vaginal Ring
As the ring is a hormone-based birth control method, it also entails some side effects just like the oral contraceptives. Some reported side effects are,
Nausea
Breast tenderness
Mood swings
Vaginal discharge
A headache
Fatigue and weight gain
Some risk factors associated with the ring are rare instances of a blood clot in the arteries or vein and a slight increase in the risk of breast cancer.
What if You Forget to Remove the Ring
Sometimes when you forget to remove the ring, you may expose yourself to the risk of being unprotected, as the hormones would have outlived its active time period. If you forgot the ring anytime, remove it immediately as soon as you remember. If you kept the ring inside for less than seven days after the third week, remove the ring and give a break of 7 days for your menstrual cycle and then reinsert a new ring. In the case where the ring remains for more than a week after the third week, remove it immediately and put a new ring right away. During the period where you forgot to remove the ring if you have had any intercourse, immediately take emergency contraceptive pills to avoid unintended pregnancy. Also, remember to take additional precaution while having sex for the next one week.
What if the Ring Comes Out on its Own
Sometimes, there are chances for the ring to detach and come away during intercourse or otherwise when it is not fitted properly. Depending on the time elapsed after it was inserted and the number of hours it was exposed outside, anyone of the following steps can be adopted.
If the ring is exposed out for less than a time frame of 3 hours, then wash it with cold or slightly warm water and reinsert it carefully.
If the ring is exposed for more than three hours, especially in the first or second week after insertion, then wash it with cold or lukewarm water and reinsert it. Additionally, as a precaution take contraceptive tablets for seven days. If your ring accidentally detaches soon after an intercourse, then immediately take emergency contraceptive pills to avoid pregnancy.
If the ring gets exposed for more than three hours during the third week after insertion, you can remain ring-free to complete your menstrual cycle or insert a new ring if you wish to avoid it.
Does Vaginal Ring Provide Protection Against Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
Vaginal ring does not offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases. The use of a condom is compulsory if there is any scope for the transmission of such infections.
Vaginal Ring with Other Medicines
Some of the following medicines slightly seem to interfere with the functioning of the ring and bring down its efficiency. You can speak to your doctor before taking these medications if you are using the vaginal ring.
Medications like antibiotics (rifampicin, rifamate, rifampin)
Medications given for HIV
Antifungal griseofulvin
Some anti-epileptic medications
John’s Wort
FAQs
1. When does the vaginal start working?
The vaginal ring offers effective protection seven days after insertion. If you insert it during the first day of your menstrual cycle, it offers protection from the day you insert it. When inserted on any other days, it has to be backed by an additional contraceptive for the first 7 days.
2. When can I use the vaginal ring after childbirth?
You can use the ring 21 days after your delivery. However, if you wish to breastfeed your baby, then it is advisable to start using the ring after at least 6 months postpartum, as the hormones in the ring reduce the milk flow.
3. When can I use the ring after an abortion or miscarriage?
You can use the vaginal ring immediately after a miscarriage or abortion.
4. Can I use the ring when breastfeeding?
Although it’s not harmful to use it while breastfeeding, the ring is known to cause a reduction in the breast milk supply. Therefore, it is advisable to not use it until at least six months after delivery.
The vaginal ring is undoubtedly an effective contraceptive tool if used with diligence and proper care. You can talk to your gynaecologist to find out more about the ring and how you can start using it for preventing unintended pregnancy.

Is Connected Technology Affecting Us? This Article Focuses Mainly on the Recent Technology and It's Effects on Human Health.
Technology is moving towards connecting everyone to everything. What does this really connecting everything means?
People in this everfast growing world are more addicted to the wireless space of connecting internet to all the things around them. With this rapid increse in technology, every human tend to stick to wireless technology from switching on the TV, Lights, Fans, oven, toasters, & WIFI toys etc. making lives easier at one click from your wireless device. But no one seem worried about the electromagnetic radiation they are playing with!
Now coming to home, where they spend much time, they need to think about their child who is more exposed to all the connected things leading to high levels of non ionisation energy. These high level of non ionisation energy had few effects on health. The studies from WHO reported symptoms include headaches, anxiety, suicide and depression, nausea, and fatigue on humans due to EM waves radiations.
It is also reported that people working in Electronics Industry are exposed to high level of EM waves which are causing effects on eyes and leading to Cataract in some cases. The radiations above 3000 megahertz leads to damaging tissues. The growing child is more susceptible to radiations and can cause damage to brain tissues. Studies are being conducted on the effects of electromagnetic radiations on cognition. The reports indicate no much effects if it's within the limited range for common users.
As the WIFI technology is rapidly increasing in the society. It's making the children to opt for WIFI relayed toys, than the physical play. Hence, parents need to focus more on physical play, and take their child to the playground which enhances the physical growth and promotes overall family well-being.
Reaserch were also conducted on mother's womb for any effects due to EM waves. Studies say there were no serious risks related to the baby's health. In some cases, babies exposed to mobile phones in the womb had behavioural problems during childhood, such as hyperactivity.
Considering all, the effects seem to be very less. However, high mobile usage during pregnancy needs to be avoided or better to keep phones in aeroplane mode, send texts instead of long duration calls, also using wired technology like landline helps.

A. I think it would be advisable for you to get an ultrasound done with your doctor that’s going to give you a clarity because if there is a pregnancy it would be visible at least at least that sack is visible if it’s a regular pregnancy so it would be advisable to have a test with your doctor

A. dear Mum, you should not give any sort of gripe water or ghutti to your baby. these are unhealthy and dangerous and can cause infection to your baby. so, these should be completely avoided.

A. usually fixed. better to show to specialist always as they get the correct diagnosis. try to avoid self and extra medication that will only complicate this and create more damage to the child
