Rash on Baby's Face - Types, Causes, and Treatment
Babies tend to have extremely soft and smooth skin; which is why, the moment a rash appears on their skin, parents start panicking. If your baby has a rash, it can be troublesome for him. He may start crying and fidget since he can’t express why he is feeling uncomfortable. If your little one has a rash on his face and is crying continuously, as a parent, you should try to help him and understand the different types of rashes so as to know when to seek a professional. Usually, rashes on a baby’s face are harmless and clear up on their own. However, sometimes a rash on a baby’s face could indicate a serious condition. Read on to understand the different types of rashes and how to treat them.
Causes of Rashes on Baby's Face
As a baby’s skin is sensitive, it is susceptible to rashes or irritation. Here are some of the common causes of rashes on a baby’s face.
1. Food Allergy
Rashes can be a clear-cut reaction to food items that your baby might be allergic to. These items could be transferred to a baby via breastmilk as well. If your baby is on supplementary food, certain ingredients of the formula can also trigger an allergy in a baby, and he may develop rashes on the face.
2. Chemical Reaction
Sometimes, a baby may also get a rash if he wears clothes that are not washed properly. The detergents or solutions you use to wash your baby's clothes, bedsheets or any clothing item that comes in contact with your baby may cause the rash. Similarly, creams, soaps, or perfumes that might be used on the baby or around them, could also trigger similar reactions.
3. Extreme Climatic Conditions
Babies have extremely sensitive skin that immediately reacts to the changes in the surrounding atmosphere. If the air is extremely hot or the AC is turned up too high, the baby’s skin may get dehydrated, causing the rash to appear. External weather conditions could further trigger these, making things difficult for the baby.
4. Poor Hygiene
If your friends and relatives, they may not always use a sanitiser to clean their hands before taking him in their arms or when playing with him. Holding the baby without washing hands may also cause germs and other particles to come in contact with the baby’s sensitive skin, causing reactions. In case a rash has just disappeared, the presence of germs could cause it to appear again.
If proper cleanliness is not maintained in the house, it could also lead to allergic reactions which may cause a rash to appear. If you don’t clean or disinfect your house or your baby’s toys regularly, the dust particles in the room or on the toys may circulate around the room. If these dust particles are inhaled by the baby or come in contact with his skin, it may cause the rash to appear. These germs could also make your baby ill.
5. Pet Allergies
If you have pets in your home, their presence could also trigger allergies in your baby. Pet hair usually litter around the house and may trigger allergic reactions. If you play with your pet, make sure your hands and body are clear of any saliva or pet hair before you take your baby in your arms.
Types of Rashes
Some of the most common types of baby rashes are mentioned below.
1. Infantile Eczema
Infantile eczema also termed as atopic dermatitis, this rash usually appears when rough cloths, chemical detergents, or other skin allergens come into contact with the baby. It looks dry, scaly, and reddish, and generally appears on the face, legs, chest, and arms.
2. Baby Acne
This acne is not as bad as adult acne. The small protruding bumps on the face of a baby that resemble a pimple and are pink in colour, appear due to being exposed to the mother’s hormones. Baby acne may appear just 2 to 4 weeks after the birth of the baby but it usually clears up on its own in about 3 to 4 months and does not leave any marks on the baby’s face.
3. Impetigo
Impetigo is a common skin condition that is contagious. Impetigo appears on a baby’s face, especially around his nose, and on his hands in the form of extremely irritating red-coloured blisters. This condition is extremely contagious and is actually an infection. Doctors usually recommend antibiotic treatment immediately after it is diagnosed.
4. Milia
If you see small white-coloured boils on your baby’s face, these are a clear sign of milia. In this condition, the sweat glands of the baby’s skin are blocked resulting in the tiny boils. They usually do not cause any irritation and fade away in their own time without any treatment.
5. Dribble Rash
Usually observed around the area of a baby’s mouth, whether on the chin or across the neck, the reason for dribble rash is exactly as the name suggests – the dribbling of saliva excessively from the baby’s mouth. If the saliva isn’t wiped off periodically and stays accumulated in these areas, it results in this kind of a rash.
6. Seborrheic Dermatitis
Observed primarily in areas of the baby’s skin where the hair is present, this can later spread to other areas of the body too. This rash appears in the form of irritating small red bumps and some crusty scales in yellow colour on the scalp, and even within eyebrows and eyelashes. The reason behind this is an allergic reaction to food, primarily through baby formulas or supplementary foods.
7. Slapped Cheek Syndrome
Slapped cheek syndrome is a viral infection that leads to the development of a bright red rash on one or both cheeks. The rash on cheeks usually disappears in a few days time, but if the rashes develop on other parts of the body like arms, chest, and legs, it may take some time, about 7-10 to disappear. Although this rash is more common in school-aged children, anyone could get it. This rash is usually not painful and disappears on its own, you should seek medical help if your baby has it for a long time now.
7. Other Causes
Apart from allergic reactions and dry skin problems, certain rashes could also occur due to a variety of reasons ranging from insect bites down to extreme heat exposure. Mostly observed on neck and back, there are specific conditions such as salmon patches, erythema toxicum, and Mongolian spots that can cause harmless rashes to appear temporarily.
Treatment for Facial Rashes in Infants
If your baby has facial rashes, the first and foremost thing you should do is to ease the irritation that happens because of the rash. This will provide your baby with some relief and prevent the rash from spreading or worsening.
Your doctor may suggest some lavender balms that you can use to apply on to your baby’s skin using a cotton swab. This will help hydrate the skin and lower the pain and discomfort for the baby. In severe cases, a doctor might recommend using hydrocortisone cream or even suggest administration of anti-histamines to bring the rash under control. Under no circumstances should any oils or acne lotions be used on the baby’s face, as these lotions or oils could further aggravate the rash.
Home Remedies for Rashes on a Baby’s Face
Most rashes such as red rash, milk rash, or heat rash on a baby’s face can be taken care of at home by means of simple remedies. Try these home remedies if your baby has a rash on his face which is not severe or because of the conditions mentioned above.
Use Ice Cubes
Rashes may lead to irritation, which will make your baby uncomfortable. Use ice cubes to soothe the pain. Place 2-3 ice cubes in a piece of cloth and wrap it. Then place it on the affected area gently. Ice cubes should help alleviate the pain to an extent.
Use Cornstarch
You can also use cornstarch to treat rashes on your baby’s face. You can apply cornstarch to the affected area as it keeps the area dry and free of moisture. However, consult a doctor before applying it on to your baby’s face.
Try Breast Milk
Using breast milk on the affected area can also help treat rashes. If your baby has a rash, apply some breast milk on the affected area. It is loaded with antibodies that will help in treating the rash. In addition, there is no risk of your baby developing an allergic reaction to the same.
Oatmeal Works Too
Mix oatmeal with warm water and bathe your baby with this water. This will provide relief from rashes. Oatmeal has natural hydrating properties which help in moisture retention.
Prevention
As you know prevention is better than cure, so why not nip the problem in the bud before it gets too late. Here are some measures you can take to prevent rashes.
Use a humidifier in your baby’s room so that the surrounding air isn’t dry and doesn’t dehydrate your baby’s skin.
If your baby has a rash, request other people to not touch the baby at all. Even if there is no rash but there is a history of susceptibility, ensure that people maintain their distance and don’t touch your child too much.
Rashes on the face can be further aggravated if the baby keeps scratching his face with his nails. Try your best to keep the nails short so as to prevent the rash from aggravating.
Avoid using wipe cloths to clean your baby as they are rough and may even house germs.
Avoid cleaning your baby’s upper body with soap if he has extra sensitive skin. Using clean water is enough.
If a rash is present, use soft paper towels to clean the area. Let the area dry on its own, don’t pat it.
Baby rashes can go from harmless to an extreme if proper hygiene is not maintained. By taking the right measures you can prevent external factors from affecting your baby and can even prevent the rash from aggravating. Moreover, do not panic, as your baby will get through this phase. If you are not sure, do not hesitate in consulting a doctor.

Soft Gulabjamun Recipe using Milk Powder (with trips and tricks)
"Gulabjamun" is a very popular north Indian sweet. In English Gulab means "rose" and Jamun is "blackish purple berry". This is called as such may be due to its look. I personally love the combination of hot gulabjamuns and vanilla icecream. They both create a true heavenly feeling in mouth. Gulabjamuns can be made in two ways- using khoya or milk powder. Here I have made the gulabjamuns using milk powder which tests really good and it's very easy to make. Let's jump into the recipe...

Ingredients:
Serves: 4 to 5 persons
Cook Time: 30 to 45 minutes
For 10 to 12 pieces of Gulabjamuns
1 cup milk powder
1/4 cup all purpose flour (maida)
1 tablespoon ghee or as required
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons fresh yogurt (curd) or as required
Grated almonds to garnish
Oil to deep fry
For Sugar Syrup
2 cups water
1.5 cups sugar
3 to 4 cardamoms
Few saffron strands (optional)
Few drops of rose water (optional)
Add water sugar and 3 to 4 cardamoms into a pan. Keep it to boil. Stir occasionally. (If the sugar syrup has impurities, then add 1 tbsp milk into it. Then remove the layer of scum with a spatula or spoon.)
If available, add a few drops of rose water and a few saffron strands in the sugar solution. This is optional.
You have to make a thick sugar syrup. It's better to keep on boiling till it gets a half string consistency. On cooling it will be thicker.
Add milk powder, all purpose flour, baking soda in a bowl and mix well.
Add ghee and fresh yogurt (curd) and mix nicely.
Mix everything gently. Do not kneed or over mix. Keep in mind that over mixing will make the jamuns hard (due to extra gluten) and then the jamuns won't absorb the sugar syrup.
Also keep in mind that the dough should be smooth without any cracks. If there are cracks or the dough looks dry, add a little more yogurt (1 tablespoon or as required) and mix.
The dough will be a little sticky. Apply some ghee in hand and then make small balls from the dough. Jamun balls will increase in size while frying and soaking in sugar syrup.
Heat oil in a kadhai. Oil should be medium hot. Add balls in the oil and deep fry. Balls should slowly get browned in colour and should rise to the top from the bottom of the kadhai while cooking.
Remember if the balls get browned too quickly the oil is too hot. If the balls do not rise, the oil is not hot enough. In either cases gulabjamuns won't get cooked properly. So oil should be medium hot.
Also remember, if the balls crack while frying, add some flour (1 more teaspoon or as required) to the dough and mix again.
Gently stir and keep on turning the gulabjamun balls while frying so that they get evenly browned in colour.
Once done, add them to the warm suger syrup.
Soak the gulabjamuns atleast for one hour before serving, to get the perfect soft texture.
Tadaaaa...Here it goes. This festive season it's a must try and please follow my blogs to get more such Recipes. Hope you enjoy !! Until next time take care. Thank you😊💖

12 Symptoms of Iron Deficiency That Everyone Should Know
Iron is one of the most vital nutrients for the proper functioning of our body. This mineral makes haemoglobin, a protein present in red blood cells, which helps carry oxygen to all the parts of our body. When our body lacks this nutrient, we experience iron deficiency. In such a case, our body is unable to perform some of its functions properly and thus may lead to certain health complications. Therefore, in order to be hale and hearty, iron levels in the body need to be in check. Read this post to know some common signs and symptoms of iron deficiency and find out if you lack this mineral in your body.
12 Signs That Show You Have Iron Deficiency
The iron levels in the body may get disrupted due to poor lifestyle, certain health conditions, excessive menstrual bleeding, increased iron requirements during pregnancy etc. However, whenever certain conditions arise our body indicates or signals us; here are some cues of iron deficiency that you should not miss:
1. Pale Skin
In the dearth of adequate iron levels in your body, you may look paler. The pale skin colour is more distinctive around the lower inner eye-lids. The reason is a lack of haemoglobin, which renders red colour to the red blood cells and which in turn, makes our skin look pinkish or rosy. The skin of your entire body may turn pale, or the paleness may be restricted to one area of the body such as lower eyelids, face, gums etc.
2. Extreme Fatigue
If you are feeling lethargic or tired for no evident reasons, there are chances that you may be suffering from low iron levels. The red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to various parts of the body, and when these levels drop down, the body is unable to meet its oxygen requirements. The oxygen-rich blood does not get circulated in your body, and thus it makes you feel tired and exhausted.
3. Dizziness or Headaches
The lower levels of oxygen in the blood affect the brain too. Lack of oxygen in the brain may cause swelling in the blood vessels, which may lead to intense pressure. The increased pressure may make you feel dizzy and also cause headaches. Though this is not one of the prominent symptoms, however, if you are experiencing recurrent bouts of headaches or you often feel dizzy, you should get your haemoglobin checked.
4. Breathlessness
If you have lower levels of haemoglobin in your body, your oxygen levels will be lower too. This means your muscles will not have enough oxygen to perform the normal day to day activities such as walking or doing routine household chores. This would increase your breathing rate or make you breathless.
5. Bad Hair and Skin Texture
If your skin looks dull and lifeless and your hair appears dry and damaged, you can blame it to the low iron levels in your body. Inadequate oxygen level in the body adversely affects the skin and hair and makes them dry and brittle. If you are experiencing severe iron deficiency, you may experience hair loss too.
6. Increased Heart Rate
If your heart is beating faster or you experience palpitations, it could be one of the notable symptoms of iron deficiency. The lesser oxygen in the blood makes the heart work more to transport oxygen to the other parts of the body, resulting in an increased or irregular heart rate. In severe cases, this condition may result in fatal complications such as heart murmur, enlarged heart, or even a heart attack.
7. Brittle Nails
Koilonychia is a condition that is associated with spoon-shaped or brittle fingernails. This condition arises when the body lacks ample iron levels. The nails bend inwards from the centre, and the edges of the nails grow outwards, giving the appearance of a spoon. The condition makes the nails brittle, or the nails may crack or break easily. This condition usually affects people with severe iron deficiencies.
8. Restless Legs Syndrome
It has been observed that people, who experience restless leg syndrome, usually suffer from anaemia or iron deficiencies. Also, the symptoms of this ailment become more severe in people with lower levels of iron. Though, the actual cause of this condition is not clearly ascertained, however, anaemia certainly has a role to play. People with this condition experience a strong urge to keep moving their legs, when in rest. And this condition may worsen at night.
9. Soreness and Swelling of the Mouth and Tongue
If you look inside your mouth, you may get the indication of iron deficiency. This is because when your haemoglobin is low; your tongue may become inflamed, swollen, and smooth or pale. You may also experience mouth ulcers, cracks on the corners of your mouth, or dryness inside your mouth.
10. Frequent Infections
Apart from carrying many other functions in the body, iron is also important in keeping your immune system in track. However, low levels of iron in your blood can make your immune system weaker, thus making you more prone to infections. The red blood cells are also important in carrying blood to the lymph nodes, where white blood cells are produced. When the infection-fighting white blood cells are not produced in ample amounts, or they are not strong enough, our body catches infections.
11. Strange Food Cravings
There are chances that if you crave for weird things such as clay, chalk or dirt, you may be anaemic or suffering from iron deficiency. However, one should refrain from succumbing to the body’s strange requirements because it may lead to toxicity and it may also fiddle with proper absorption of iron by the body.
12. Cold Feet and Hands
Do you feel that your hands or feet always remain cold, well, it could be possible because of lower iron levels. Lesser iron in the body means lesser oxygen, which means hampered blood circulation. Therefore, it could lead to colder hands and feet too.
Though many times some of the above-mentioned symptoms or signs may coincide with other health ailments too, you must act promptly and take a cue in case your body is experiencing something abnormal.
What Should You Do If You Are Iron Deficient?
If you think you are experiencing any kind of iron deficiency, here are some things that you should consider doing:
You should consult your doctor and inform him of your symptoms to find out whether or not you are suffering from iron deficiency. Your doctor will suggest blood tests to find out the same.
Include more iron-rich foods in your diet to increase your iron levels. Dark leafy vegetables like kale and spinach, dried fruits like apricots and raisins, seeds, nuts, red meat, poultry, pork etc. are some good options for iron-rich foods.
You should include foods that are rich in vitamin C. This is because vitamin C is important for the absorption of iron in the body.
You should exclude or limit the intake of foods that hamper iron absorption in the body such as caffeinated beverages or excess intake of dairy products.
If your doctor feels the need or you are not able to meet your body’s iron requirement through dietary sources, you will be recommended iron supplements to meet your iron requirements. These supplements may also help you recover from iron-deficiency related hair loss, skin issues, and other such associated problems.
All the above-mentioned recommendations may help in dealing with symptoms of iron deficiency in women and men of all age groups.

The Amazing Benefits of Dancing With Your Baby
Dance is among the most fun things you can do – even better when you do it at home! But what has dancing got to do with your baby? Does it actually help him in any way?
Research has conclusively proven that dancing is an excellent way to trigger your baby’s overall development. And this applies even when you are dancing for him! As your baby learns to move his hands and legs better, he will also learn to sway to tunes. As a parent, do your best to encourage his cute little dancing as it has a world of benefits for his growth.
Here’s What a bit of Dancing Every Day Can Do for Your Baby
1. Helps Your Baby Become More Social
Just as uninhibited dancing helps us let our hair down at a party, the same applies to babies too! Dancing lets your baby make new friends (who are also dancing), learn to make eye contact, and exchange smiles with fellow babies. Just try this out at the next baby playdate you organize!
2. Provides Sensory Stimulation to Your Baby
Dancing is a complete audio visual experience for your child. There’s the music that stimulates his sense of hearing, the thrill of seeing new faces which promotes visual development, and the developing sense of rhythm and balance that help his physical development. It’s the perfect baby exercise.
3. Gives Your Baby Much Needed Exercise
Yes, babies need exercise too and childhood obesity is a very real problem! What could be a better exercise than dancing? This is something both mom and baby can enjoy anytime of the day! When your baby is little, a bit of rocking and swinging also equals dance.
4. Introduces Your Baby to Music
This one may seem obvious but the impact of dance on your baby’s sense of music is even more than you thought. From a very young age, babies can understand synchronization, patterns, melodies and noise. Just try exposing them to something jarring and see their reaction! Some dancing practise every day triggers this musical knowledge further and this translates eventually into a better sense of patterns in other aspects of life too.
5. Teaches Your Baby New Aspects of Language
March! Stop! Move! Never are these instructions better understood than on the dance floor. While dancing together, try and use as many word labels as possible. Yes, your baby can understand your tonality and purpose even before he understands semantics! Just make sure you use hand gestures and facial expressions to convey the meaning behind the word.
There, mommy, dancing is excellent both for your baby and you! The next time you’re feeling low and drained, just put on some music, take off your shoes, and put up a dance performance only for your little one! Read more

Has Acupuncture Put an End to Colic in Babies?
If you’re a mother the term “colic” is definitenly not alien to you. Long hours of red-faced crying and even longer hours of wondering what's wrong is all too familiar for a new-mom. Colic in babies is so common, it has been accepted as a given. New research has found that one age-old practice might actually end this once and for all.
It is statistically believed that one in five babies are prone to colic. Colic is known to be a condition comprising of excessive, frequent crying in babies who are otherwise healthy. The crying usually stops by the time the baby is around 6 months old, however, this may seem like a long time. Latest study conducted in the UK suggests that acupuncture can help reduce the effects of colic in babies. Although many conventional ways do not make use of any such practice, it is interesting to know how an age old method can perhaps put an end to this persisting problem.
What Causes Colic in Babies?
The cause of colic in babies is unknown, however, it is believed that minor tummy related problems like indigestion, intestinal sensitivity to breast or formula milk or even trapped wind can cause this occurrence in little ones. A theory also suggests that this condition is caused due to an imbalance of healthy bacteria in the intestines. Also, babies of mothers who continued smoking during their pregnancy turn out colicky.
Can Acupuncture Really Help?
According to a study published in the BMJ journal, Acupuncture in Medicine, researchers from Lund University took around 147 babies suffering from colic and divided them in a group of three to carry out the experiment. Two of these groups received two kinds of minimal acupuncture while the remaining group wasn’t administered any of this. A needle was inserted up to a depth of 3mm for a few seconds in the first group whereas up to five needles were inserted in the second group for approximately 30 seconds.
The entire practice was carried out twice a week and lasted up until weeks. During this course of time, parents of all three groups were asked to monitor the crying of their babies. This included keeping a tab on the frequency and the duration of their cries. Post the experiment, researchers found that the crying reduced in all three groups, however, it reduced at a faster rate amongst babies that received acupuncture.
The study author from the faculty of medicine at the university, Dr. Kajsa Landgren also revealed that the babies did not cry at all during more than half of the treatment and cried only for more than one minute during 31 out of 380 sessions. Many other doctors and scholars of the field however believe that the research is quite inconclusive as a statement cannot be made by studying a small group of subjects. Moreover, they also suggest that cockily babies respond to even minimal attention and the conducted study confirms that a little extra care is capable of generating an effect.
What Really Works?
Although paediatrics use acupuncture in certain cases to treat children, however a case of colic will need further investigation. Acupuncture is mostly used to treat conditions, like chronic pain (example, neck pain), joint, dental and postoperative pains.Age old tested methods of relieving the effects of colic in babies are mostly simple techniques any mother could adopt. For example, holding the baby, burping after feeds, gently rocking them over the shoulder and a gentle massage for the baby’s tummy.
Mothers too can take certain precautions in case they are breastfeeding. These include avoiding caffeine drinks and spicy food and maintaining a healthy diet. Apart from this certain alteration in baby’s diet could also help. Colic can be tough and exhausting for parents too.Sometimes a little help from family and friends can help ease the pressure. And sometimes if you are lucky, your might actually just be crying out of hunger or tiredness!
Although the study is vastly inconclusive, it definitely has opened doors to a new possibility of reducing the effects of colic in baby, a condition that troubles both the parents and the little one alike! Read more

A. Some women may have vomiting throughout their pregnancy. The most common reason for vomiting during the third trimester may be gastritis. Make sure you eat small frequent meals, preferably every 2 hours. If your baby's weight during checkups are adequate..u needn't worry much about this. You can also consult your doctor and take anti emetics and PPIs if the vomiting is bothering you or interfering with your daily activities.
