20 Maths Puzzles for Kids
Mathematics is a subject that children often dread or find boring. However, maths does not have to be dull or intimidating. It can be a lot of fun if taught the right way. Here are 20 mathematical riddles for kids that will help children improve their maths skills in an interesting and enjoyable way.
Easy Maths Puzzles with Answers for Children
1. Ramesh turned 10 years old day before yesterday. By next year he will become 13. How is this possible?
Answer: This is one of the more amusing maths puzzles for kids age 6. With the help of math and a calendar, this puzzle can be easily explained.
For this puzzle to work, we need to assume that today is 1st January 2018. This means that Ramesh’s eleventh birthday was on 31st December 2017. Day before yesterday, he was 10 years old, today he is 11. By the end of the current year, 2018, he will be 12 years old. And so, by the next year (i.e. in 2019), he will be 13 years old.
2. What is the following number? 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, ______________
Answer: Here the pattern to be observed is: every successive number is greater by 3. So the sequence will be: 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48, and so on.
3. What is the following number? 53, 51, 49, 47, 45, 43, _______________
Answer: Here the pattern to be observed is: every successive number is smaller by 2. So the sequence will be: 53, 51, 49, 47, 45, 43, 41, 39, 37, 35, and so on.
4. Hari had 6 siblings who were born all born 2 years apart. The youngest is Richa who is only 7 years old while Hari is the oldest. What is Hari’s age?
Answer: Richa, the youngest sibling is 7 years old. Each sibling was born 2 years apart, and there are total seven children (Hari and his 6 siblings). So Hari's age is: 7 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 19.
5. Ravi used to live in a village that was next to the forest. One day he crossed paths with a genie. The genie was in a generous mood and granted Ravi one wish. Ravi, thinking it was a joke, wished for a 100 grams of gold. The genie agreed and behold! Ravi had a kilo of gold. Shocked and feeling upset that he asked for so little, Ravi requested the genie if he could ask for another wish. The genie agreed but only on one condition. The genie would come back next month on any date and Ravi would need to present him with gold rings. However, the gold rings had to be the same weight as the date on which he arrived. This means that if the genie came on the 20th, he would need 20 grams of gold. What did Ravi do next?
Answer: This is a challenging math riddle for kids as the date is unknown. If Ravi decided to make a different gold ring for each day, it will become problematic. This is because he only has a 100 grams of gold. So, if he made a gold ring of 31 grams,30 grams, 29 grams and 27 grams, he would run out of gold. The solution is to make just 5 rings of weight 1 gram, 2 grams, 4 grams, 8 grams and 16 grams. This can be used in combination to reach the number 31. For example:
24th day: 16+8
13th day: 8+4+1
7th day: 4+2+1
6. If Radha is the 50th fastest and slowest runner in her school, how many students are there in her school?
Answer: 99 students.
50th Fastest Calculation: If you count in sequence from 1, Radha comes 50.
50th Slowest Calculation: If you count in sequence from 99, Radha is again 50.
7. Wolves and Lambs Puzzles: Six Wolves can catch just six lambs in six minutes. So how many wolves will they need to catch 60 lambs in sixty minutes? Hint - the answer is not sixty.
Answer: 1 wolf can catch 1 lamb in six minutes. In 60 minutes, each wolf can catch 10 lambs. So, each wolf can catch ten lambs, and in sixty minutes, 6 wolves can catch 60 lambs. Another method - Six Wolves. How? 6 wolves can catch six lambs in 6 minutes. If you multiply it by ten, the same wolves can catch sixty lambs in 60 minutes.
8. How Many Cycles? This is another mathematical statement problem which can be solved using logic and arithmetic. Last weekend, Jack went to play in the park near his house. He rode the new bicycle gifted by his grandma on his birthday. After reaching the park, Jack saw that there were 14 tricycles and bicycles. If there were totally 38 wheels, how many tricycles were there in the park?
Answer: There were 10 Tricycles. There were 14 cycles in all, and all of them have at least 2 wheels. So, 14 x 2 = 28. Now there are 38 wheels totally, which means 38 - 28 = 10. So, this means there are 10 cycles with one extra wheel each, meaning 10 tricycles in all.
9. The principal is constructing a square playground for the children of her school. She wanted to fence the area with four exits around the playground so that the ground was accessible from all sides. If she used 27 poles on each side of the playground, how many poles would be needed in total?
Answer: 104 poles. The 4 corner poles will be common to two sides. Hence: (25 poles x 4 sides) + 4 corner poles= 104 poles
10. Monkey and Bananas: Another word problem that is fun for kids to solve. Assume there are, five monkeys and each one takes 5 minutes to eat 5 bananas. How many minutes would 4 monkeys take to eat 4 bananas? Again, how many monkeys would eat 30 bananas in 30 minutes?
Answer: Each monkey eats 5 bananas in 5 minutes, so 1 banana in 1 minute. So, if there are 4 monkeys and 4 bananas, they will take 1 minute only. On the other hand, if 30 bananas are being eaten in 30 minutes (i.e. 1 banana in 1 minute), this is the job of one monkey.
11. What weighs more - A kilo of apples or a kilo of feathers?
Answer: They weigh the same. Each weighs exactly a kilo.
12. Using only addition, how can you add eight 8's to get the number 1,000?
Answer: 888 + 88 + 8 + 8 + 8 =1,000
13. The ages of a father and son add up to 66. The age of the dad is the age of the son reversed. How old could they be?
Answer: There are three different answers for this: the father and son could be 51 and 15 years or 42 and 24 years old or 60 and 06 years old.
14. A genetic scientist engineered a new plant which could double its size every day. He made it grow in a circular pond with a circumference of 600 metres. If he planted it in the southern part of the pond, and the plant covered half the pond in 28 days, how many days would it take to cover the full pond?
Answer: 29 days. As mentioned in the beginning, the plant doubles in size every day.
15. If there are four apples and you take away three, how many do you have?
Answer: You took the apples so obviously you have three.
16. How many 9’s are there between 1 and 100?
Answer: 20. They are 9,19,29,39,49,59,69,79,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,99
17. Draw a line. Without touching it, make this line shorter.
Answer: Draw a longer line next to it. This will make the first line seem shorter.
18. There are 2 buckets, a 5 litre and a 3-litre bucket. Fill the 5-litre bucket with 4 litres of water using just these two buckets to measure.
Answer: Fill the 5-litre bucket fully. Pour it into the 3-litre bucket until it is full. Empty the 3-litre bucket. Pour the remaining 2 litres into the 3-litre bucket. Fill the 5-litre bucket completely. Finish filling the 3-litre bucket. Now the 5-litre bucket is left with exactly 4 litres of water.
19. What do the numbers 88, 96 and 11 all have in common?
Answer: They look the same upside down and right side up.
20. Two fathers and two sons go fishing. Each of them catches one fish. So why do they bring home only three fish?
Answer: The fishing group comprises a grandfather, his son, and his son's son. So, there are just three people.

Choosing the Right Bottle for your Baby
While there is no doubt that breastfeeding is the best way to nurture a child, some new moms have to opt for the bottle due to various reasons. Whether you are pumping your own breast milk or feeding your baby formula, a bottle becomes a necessary baby care product to have. Here are some factors you need to consider when choosing the right bottle for your baby.
The most important factor while choosing bottles and nipples is, of course, that the baby takes to them. It is almost equally important that, as a new mom, you are comfortable using them since cleanliness and maintenance are going to become routine (and pretty cumbersome) chores for you.
Video: How to Choose the Right Baby Bottle?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRryL44gKWY
Choosing a Bottle
1. Glass vs Plastic
Traditionally, bottles are made of glass. They work well because they are chemical-free and last longer. However, they are more expensive and there is a danger of breakage. You can get silicon covers for the bottles to avoid damage.
Plastic bottles do not break, but they do deteriorate and need to be frequently replaced. Look out for chipped or cracked bottles. If you are skeptical about the chemicals in plastic (specially bisphenol – A) pick the ones with a ‘BPA-Free’ label.
For a start, you can choose 4 ounce bottles for your newborn. Then you can move onto the 8 or 9 ounce ones as your baby grows, and his appetite increases.
A Few More Pointers for Choosing a Bottle:
Choose the bottles of the same brand as your breast pump, so that you can express milk straight into it.
Buy bottles with broader necks. They are easier to clean.
You could opt for bottles with disposable liners. The milk never touches the bottle, and cleaning is way easier.
If your baby is colicky, try the bottles with angled necks. They reduce gas formation.
Look out for the bottles that can turn into sippers as your baby grows.
Choosing the Bottle Nipples
There is a wide variety available in the market. However, your choice may be limited by the choice of the bottle since the two often come as a package. In any case, it is a good idea to opt for a combination of the same brand since that will ensure a better fit ruling out leakage.
1. Latex vs Silicon
The first choice, new moms will have to make is between latex and silicon nipples. Latex nipples resemble the mother's breast more closely since they are softer and more flexible. Silicon nipples however last longer, are less porous and easier to maintain because they can go into the dishwasher and are also more resistant to heat. They are also less prone to bacterial infections.
2. Size of the Nipple
Though nipples come with an age indicator, use the information as a rough guide. When you upturn the bottle, milk should drip out in steady drops. If the nipple is too small, the flow may be too slow for the baby making him struggle and tiring him out. Too big a size might allow too much milk and result in choking. Observe the baby carefully each time you try out a new one.
Most nipples are traditionally either bell or dome-shaped. You might also want to consider some special ones:
Naturally-shaped nipples have a broader base. These are good when the baby is making the transition from breast to bottle because they mimic the shape of the breast better.
Orthodontic nipples are ideal for teething baby. They are flat on the side that rests on the baby's tongue.
Vented nipples, though expensive are also a good choice. They have a small hole to avoid the creation of a vacuum, making the milk-flow easier. They are especially useful to avoid colic and gas.

Gestational Surrogacy - What is it and How does it Work?
Surrogacy, by its very definition, is where a woman raises a child in her womb that isn’t her own and later hands it over to the parents who’ve been wanting a child for themselves. Although traditional surrogacy had been popular earlier, looking for a gestational surrogate has gained prominence amongst parents wanting a child that is biologically their own.
What is Gestational Surrogacy?
A woman offers her uterus for the growth of a baby, which is then delivered and handed over to the parents for whom she was the carrier. However, this surrogacy does not have the baby carrying any genetic traits of the surrogate mother. The fertilisation process happens outside the womb, using the eggs and the sperm.
How is Gestational Surrogacy Different from Traditional Surrogacy?
For a long time, traditional surrogacy was how a childless couple could enjoy the joys of being parents. In an infertile couple, the fertile partner would end up having intercourse with another partner. As medical science improved, the process of intercourse was replaced with in-vitro fertilization or IVF.
In such cases, no matter who the baby goes to, biologically, the child is a combination of a different sperm and egg as that of the actual parents. With gestational surrogacy, it is just the uterus of the surrogate mother that is used for the growth and development of the baby. Once the embryo is formed, it is transferred to the surrogate mother, who ends up raising the baby for a full-term pregnancy.
Who can Opt for Gestational Carriers?
Although gestational carriers are primarily used by infertile couples, there are a number of scenarios where someone might opt for one. These are usually:
If a woman has opted for removal of her uterus and cannot biologically hold a baby.
If a woman’s uterus is not optimal for the baby’s development due to certain conditions.
If a woman has had repeated miscarriages or the body is unable to hold a baby for a full-term.
If multiple fertility treatments have failed to conceive a child successfully.
If the couple is a same-sex couple or a single man/woman wanting to be a parent.
Possible Risks of Gestational Surrogacy
As with any medical procedure, there are certain risks that accompany gestational surrogacy as well, which you should be completely aware of before opting for it.
Since the eggs that are used for fertilization in a gestational surrogacy come from the mother, she would need to undergo a procedure for inducing ovulation and retrieving eggs from the body. This process itself carries quite some risks. On the other hand, if donor eggs are being used, then such a process is not required.
A larger risk poses itself in the form of financial investment that comes with gestational surrogacy. Not only will the gestational carrier have a fee for carrying the baby for the full pregnancy term, but all the medical costs that are associated with it have to be borne by the opting parents. These include all the checkups and tests that are regularly required to monitor the baby’s growth, but also the costs that might arise in the presence of any complications or requiring any surgery if the case arises so. These can easily go quite higher than expected.
Perhaps the biggest risk involving gestational surrogacy, or surrogacy of any sort for that matter, is an emotional one. Prior to proceeding ahead with the procedure, a number of contracts and legal documents will be signed to ensure that the child that a surrogate mother delivers will be legally and rightfully the child of the intended parents. But, the entire journey of pregnancy and the process of delivery could cause the surrogate carrier to develop a strong attachment for the baby and not adhere to the terms set in paper. The loopholes in laws present in various areas could create unseen complications in this regard, bringing into question the legal ownership of the child. Even though that may not always be the case, the parents opting for such a surrogacy might live in perpetual worry and anxiety of dealing with a situation like this, if it were to arise.
A massive health risk is taken by the gestational carrier herself in carrying the baby to full term. Many times ovulation needs to be artificially induced to be able to have the embryo successfully implant itself in the uterus. This does merit additional compensation for the carrier but that may not always happen. Even if a family member or a friend agrees to be the carrier, the parents need to be aware of the risks she would be taking as well, and make sure she is cared for on those lines.
How can you Get Started?
If your decision of proceeding ahead with gestational surrogacy has attained a complete acceptance, then it is time to start understanding how to begin with it.
1. Finding a Willing Gestational Carrier
This is the process that might take quite some time by itself. Some parents prefer asking the people closest to them, including their friends and family, if they’d be willing to be a surrogate for their child. Certain private agencies house profiles that can be used to find the right one for you, based on various parameters. A good carrier generally has a previous history of successful deliveries, is around between the ages of 20-40, and is healthy with a good support system for herself.
2. Undergoing Necessary Counselling
The process and journey of gestational surrogacy look simple and straightforward on paper. However, most parents are quite unaware of dealing with the emotional impact that accompanies it. Once a surrogate has been selected, it is best to have a common counselling session with a fertility expert, who would walk you through the stages and help you manage the various scenarios that might arise. Any emotional queries or figuring out a relationship standpoint can be freely discussed at this stage.
3. Medical Evaluation of The Sperm and Egg
For parents who would be using their own sperms and eggs, a genetic and medical evaluation would be required. In case of donors, most of them are usually screened before making them available for parents. The evaluation ensures that both the sperm and the egg are in a condition that is good enough to have a successful IVF, as well as there exist no medical complications as such, which might affect the gestational carrier.
4. Medical Evaluation of The Surrogate
If your surrogate has been arranged by a private agency, they would mostly have all her medical evaluation in place or might undertake a recent one themselves. In any case, a recent medical checkup is highly advised to address any issues or complications in her health or constitution. At the same time, if the carrier is married, then her partner might also have to undergo a checkup as well as a psychological evaluation to understand the impact of the surrogacy.
5. Getting All Legal Matters Cleared
A legal agreement is absolutely necessary for the benefit of both, the parents as well as the surrogate. It is advised for each party to have their own advocates, who can go through the details of the agreement, and reach a final contract that is acceptable to both. Keep all aspects of finances, transfer of rights, the legal acquisition of the baby prior to after delivery, and many other pointers clear in the legal contract.
Gestational Surrogacy Process
A simpler way of looking at gestational surrogacy is to equate the surrogate mother as an oven and the baby as a food item prepared by someone else. This clarifies a mental thought process regarding the ownership of the child.
Once surrogates are selected and legal requirements satisfied, there are many more procedures to undergo. Blood tests and ultrasounds will be done regularly to keep a constant check on the surrogate. Furthermore, a variety of hormones are injected into the carrier so that the body prepares itself to go into a pregnancy mode. This continues for about a month until the doctors are sure that the hormones have been successfully absorbed by the body.
If the body is prepared and the embryo has been formed after successful fertilization, the important part begins. The transfer of the embryo into the surrogate’s womb is done by using a technique which makes use of an ultrasound-guided catheter. This enters the woman’s body via the cervix and implants the embryo on the uterus. Hormone injections might continue even after that and blood levels will be checked regularly to look for signs of pregnancy
In unfortunate cases, the embryo may fail to take hold. In such a case, all medical procedures are stopped immediately and the surrogate undergoes a menstrual cycle. Following that, if both parties approve, the process is tried again with a different embryo.
How does Gestational Surrogacy Work?
Carrying out gestational surrogacy can be done in multiple ways, depending on the availability of eggs or embryos.
1. How Does It Work with Fresh Eggs
Menstrual cycles are matched so that the timings of retrieving your eggs and preparing your embryo is in sync with the uterus of the surrogate being ready to accept an embryo to be implanted.
Egg production is stimulated using gonadotropin medicines.
Once eggs are matured, they are retrieved and fertilized using the necessary sperm.
When they achieve fertilization, the embryo is transferred to the surrogate.
2. How Does It Work with Frozen Eggs
The surrogate is already on the appropriate medical procedures required to prepare her uterus for implantation.
Once the time is close, the frozen eggs are thawed and fertilization is commenced using the appropriate sperms.
These fertilized embryos are then transferred to the ready uterus.
3. How Does It Work with Frozen Embryos
This is quite similar to how frozen eggs are prepared, only that the waiting time is even less.
Since the embryo is already ready, once the surrogate achieves a prepared uterus, the embryo is thawed and inserted into the carrier for implantation.
How Long does the Process of Gestational Surrogacy Take?
Finding a willing surrogate itself can take many months to even a year or more. As for the medical procedures, around 3-4 IVF cycles, each lasting 4-6 weeks, might be required for a successful pregnancy to be attained.
Success Rates of Gestational Surrogacy
The success rates for surrogacy using one’s own eggs begin at 51 percent for women up to 34 years old and then starts reducing down to 10 percent for women beyond the age of 43. If frozen eggs are used instead, these success percentages are increased slightly.
What are the Benefits of Gestational Surrogacy?
Some of the benefits of gestational surrogacy are,
Everyone from infertile parents to same-sex couples can enjoy the joys of parenthood with this.
The child has the same genetic traits as that of the intended parents, making it biologically their own.
Surrogacy helps develop a strong bond with the carrier and helps in easy transfer of the child since the baby is not biologically related to her.
What are the Drawbacks of Gestational Surrogacy?
Gestational surrogacy has a few disadvantages like,
Opting to use for your own eggs might make it necessary to get the required fertility treatments for successful fertilization.
Intended mothers could have a hard time coming to the terms of another woman enjoying the process of pregnancy for their own child.
The legal complications are immense and the expenses in such cases are quite high.
How Much does Gestational Surrogacy Cost?
The costs can vary from person to person and agency to agency, along with the medical expenses, all ranging from 15 lacs to even 40 lacs or higher.
Gestational surrogacy is one of the best ways to have your own biological baby born the natural way. With the right measures in place, and by undertaking the right medical precautions, gestational surrogacy allows you to not only form a great bond with the carrier and ensure proper growth of the baby, but also be the joyous parents of a child that is your very own.

A Newly Born Mother
"Push push push!" Nurses and doctor were shouting. I did not know what was I doing that time. But I knew that I am responsible to bring this new soul to this world. I did my best to introduce the world to my daughter. I was thrilled to see my daughter jumping and clinging to the doctor’s hand. She made it. She decided to come out successfully. She was crying cluelessly. I was proud to see her doing well.
I again met her in my hospital room. She was wondering and falling asleep. I asked my mother to give her in my hand " I don’t know with what guts I held her". I never lifted a one-hour newly born baby so far. But when I held her for the first time I was so confident and bonded instantly. This is one of the miracles of God.
My mother asked me to feed her. It was a new experience. I tried my best to feed her. I never taught her how to suck or draw milk from my breast. But I could see my daughter struggling to suck from my breast. I was in tears when I found that I was not able to lactate her. I asked the doctor to give her formula milk but she asked me to wait until my daughter does the suction. She made it. She drew milk from my breast. I was patiently waiting for her to learn suction, but I experienced pain from breast engorgement. I bought a breast pump for pumping the milk. I gave the thick colostrum to my daughter. Eventually, she learnt to suck and mastered it later. I realized in that moment, so far my breast has been a most romantic part of the body to me. But after feeding her, it has become a beautiful food producing organ to me. These experience changed my idea about the body of mine.
I looked at my stretch mark as a beautiful drawing of my daughter. I no more look the way I am. I have gained 15 kgs. My daughter transformed me into a new person. And also appointed me to a new post called Mother. I experienced an adventurous journey of motherhood.
I really enjoyed the process of becoming a mother. I was never taught to become one. I was just innately created to be a mother to do everything instantly. So every time a new baby is born along with that a newly born mother is also born with extraordinary guts and instincts. These instincts gave me a wonderful experience to question everything, to be skeptical about everything. I even questioned my doctor why is her poop is in green colour.
I enjoyed the experience of killing mosquitoes and learning the medical drug names and vaccines. I was even motivated to upgrade myself more to be a role model for my little angel, Tharagai ( her name) three months old.
This is my adventurous journey as a mother. I learnt everything naturally. I did go to any class to become a mother. I did believe in myself and God to become a mother. And finally blessed with it. I have successfully brought up my daughter in these three months. I will continue to do the same. Thank you.
