Ultrasound Scan at 9 Weeks of Pregnancy
Congratulations! You've reached the third month of your pregnancy. Two months have passed and now you must be used to the feeling of being pregnant. Well, you can't feel your baby now, but that tiny one will soon start making small movements (though you may not be able to feel them). No doubt, you must be curious to know everything you can about your baby. In your ninth week of pregnancy, your doctor will recommend an ultrasound to know the size of your growing baby. In the ultrasound scan, you will get to see a tiny blob with a heartbeat in your uterus which will eventually grow to become your baby. Read on to know more about 9-week ultrasound scan.
Why Should You Have an Ultrasound at 9 Weeks?
The first ultrasound scan which will be conducted is called dating and viability scan. This scan is performed for the following purposes.
To check whether the baby is in the right position inside the uterus or not.
To rule out ectopic pregnancy and confirm that it is uterine.
A baby's heart starts beating around 6 weeks into the pregnancy. And by the 9th week, his heartbeat can be sensed. Therefore, to check the baby's heartbeat, an ultrasound will be conducted - it also helps a doctor determine whether the pregnancy is viable or not.
If you experience spotting or bleeding during this time, an ultrasound scan can help determine the cause of the same.
It can show the number of babies you are carrying. If you are having twins, it can be determined during the 9-week ultrasound scan.
Couples who have had an IVF treatment need scans to determine successful implantation and viability of the pregnancy.
How to Prepare for Your 9th Week Pregnancy Scan
If you are having a scan around 9 weeks, it will normally be a transvaginal scan (TVS). This is because at this time your baby will be too low in the abdomen or too small for an abdominal scan in early pregnancy. A TVS will allow your doctor to scan the uterus through the vagina. To prepare for the scan, first, you will need to empty your urinary bladder. A full bladder can get in the way of a clear picture during the scan, so a nurse will ask you to use the restroom while she prepares for your scan.
Since the probing is vaginal, you will need to undress from the waist down. It’s suggested that you wear loose clothing such as a long top with slacks or loose pants to avoid being fully undressed.
How Long Does it Take to Perform an Ultrasound Scan?
A typical scan would last for about 20 to 30 minutes. However, if the doctor has a hard time to get clear pictures, it might take a little longer. But, there’s no need to worry about it as women find transvaginal scans more comfortable than abdominal scans.
What Happens During an Ultrasound Scan?
During the ultrasound scan, you will be asked to lie down on an examination table or a bed. You will need to raise your knees in a position that the soles of your feet are flat on the bed. Your legs need to be kept apart, so the doctor has space to perform the scan. This is about the same position you’d take during an internal examination.
The probe will be covered with a sterile latex sheath that resembles a condom, and a lubricant gel will be applied on it so that it passes through the vagina with ease and generate clear pictures. The probe will be inserted two to three inches into the vagina to perform the scan. Although the procedure might feel a bit awkward, if you relax, it will be easier for your doctor to insert the probe. If you tense up your muscles, it can become uncomfortable and painful. So remember to take deep breaths and try to relax.
What Will You See on the Scan at the Ninth Week of Your Pregnancy?
Here is what you can expect in your 9-week ultrasound scan:
Your baby will measure about 2.3 cm and weigh close to 2 grams.
You will be able to see his head, body, and limbs. By now your baby will no more be an embryo and will be a foetus.
The heartbeat of a foetus can also be picked up in a 9-week ultrasound scan. It will be usually around 130 to 150 beats per second.
Your doctor will carefully examine the region around the gestational sac for any bleeding; a condition called subchorionic hematoma.
What Does It Mean to Have an Empty Yolk Sac During the 9th Week of Pregnancy?
The yolk sac envelops the developing foetus and the amniotic fluid. The yolk sac is contained within the gestational sac and is a source of nutrition for the developing foetus in early pregnancy. It is not visible until about 5 to 6 weeks into the gestation; hence it is a marker of the age of the foetus. When no yolk sac is seen around 6 weeks, it may be because there has been an error in remembering the dates of your last period. The doctor will then schedule another scan in a week or two to confirm the presence of a yolk sac. If it is still not seen around 9 weeks of pregnancy, then it is could be a sign of miscarriage. Sometimes there is no need to wait until the follow-up scan, if the 9-week ultrasound pictures show the gestational sac of about 25 mm or more, and there’s no yolk sac or embryo, the doctor will diagnose a miscarriage immediately.
What If Some Abnormalities Are Discovered in the Scan?
Scans can sometimes be inconclusive, hence there are strict guidelines that should be followed. Since doctors adhere to these guidelines, their findings are absolutely sure. Doctors look for minor abnormalities in the scans called “markers” that can indicate a more serious problem or could be just a variation of what is considered normal. So, if they find anything unusual, they may ask you to take tests such as CVS or amniocentesis to check if the chromosomes in the baby are normal.
If the foetus does have a serious problem, you can take time to think through your choices. They may include termination of pregnancy, preparing for a baby who might have special needs, or in extremely rare cases, carrying out a surgery on the foetus.
Ultrasound scans are extremely important to rule out problems and confirm a healthy pregnancy. So do not skip any. Go for ultrasound scans, get everything checked, and have a healthy and safe pregnancy!

How to Survive the Two-Week Wait (2WW) Phase
The two-week wait is a time of anxiety, nervousness, and frustration for a couple who want to hear the good news that they are expecting a baby. The two-week wait phase is simply the time between your attempts at pregnancy and the day you get your results. The term can seem alien to those who are not trying to conceive yet. But women who are trying to get pregnant might be aware of it well enough. Whether you try for pregnancy naturally or through fertility treatments, you’ll have to wait for 14 days to get to know the results. Read on if you want to know more about the two-week wait phase.
What Is the Two-Week Wait?
The two-week wait refers to the luteal phase of pregnancy. It is a phase of the menstrual cycle which starts after ovulation and lasts until the start of pregnancy or breakdown of the corpus luteum. In other words, it is the duration between ovulation and the next expected period. Most women who tend to have a 28-day cycle, their luteal phase of pregnancy is for about 14 days, which can be quite frustrating for those trying to conceive.
Symptoms and Emotions You May Have During the Two- Week Wait Phase
Whether you’ve tried for pregnancy with or without fertility treatments, the two-week stretch can seem too long. To better cope with it, you should learn about the symptoms of this phase. Here are some symptoms that you can expect during this two-week phase. These are some common symptoms of pregnancy. If you experience these, it could be a sign of pregnancy.
Bloating: During your 2WW phase, one of the first symptoms you will experience is bloating. Bloating is common during PMS and in the early stages of pregnancy, and it can be a bit tricky to distinguish. Triggered by the hormone progesterone, it is definitely something many women experience during this phase.
Nausea: Hormonal changes are one of the reasons for pregnancy-related nausea. However, what causes morning sickness isn’t exactly known. For some, morning sickness won’t hit until they are 6 weeks into their pregnancy. But if you are trying for a baby and feel nauseated during the two-week wait phase, then it could be a good sign of pregnancy.
Spotting: As soon as the egg is fertilized it begins to develop and move along to implant itself in the uterus. It takes about 6 to 12 days to get to the uterus, all the while signalling a woman’s body to prepare for pregnancy. Implantation bleeding, also known as spotting, can occur even before you can see blue signs on your pregnancy test. About 30% of pregnant women notice light spotting during implantation before their expected period.
Sensitivity to smell: Most pregnant women experience a change in their sense of smell during pregnancy and it can begin as early as two-week wait phase. Estrogen sensitizes the nostrils to even the faintest odour. It also aggravates morning sickness.
Mood swings: This is something all pregnant women experience. Driven by hormonal changes, one moment you may giggle and in the other moment, you may cry for no apparent reason. Irritability is also quite normal and no amount of discussions with anybody can help. Mood swings are common during pregnancy and PMS, but many women consider them as one of the earliest signs of pregnancy.
Increased basal body temperature (BBT): BBT is the temperature of the body when you are fully at rest and relaxed. It can be roughly measured with a basal thermometer soon after waking up from sleep or just before performing any physical activity. After conception, a woman’s BBT goes up by one degree and stays elevated throughout the pregnancy. So if you’ve been tracking your BBT for a while, you can tell if you have conceived during your 2WW period.
Back pain: Conception can immediately put your body into pregnancy mode and you can begin to feel the differences. Your body will prepare itself for some major physical changes that will happen in your uterus to accommodate the baby. If you experience back pain out of the blue during your 2WW, it could be a sign that you are pregnant.
Vivid dreams: When a woman is pregnant, she may tend to sleep more and much of her underlying thoughts and feelings manifest themselves as strange but vivid dreams.
Constipation: Constipation is common among pregnant women and you can expect it in your two weeks wait period. If you are waiting to hear the good news, even being constipated may feel wonderful, as it is one of the symptoms of pregnancy. However, it may trouble you throughout your pregnancy. To combat this problem, drink plenty of water and eat fibre-rich foods.
Food aversions: Some foods can make you nauseous while you may desperately crave for others. Although you may not have food aversions until you are five weeks pregnant, if you crave or have aversions for certain foods during your two-week wait, it could be a sign of pregnancy.
Frequent urination: Frequent urination is a good sign of pregnancy as it starts just days after conception. This new urge can begin within 10-14 days due to the pregnancy hormone hCG. The hormone triggers an increase in the blood supply to the uterine wall to nourish the developing embryo. It also increases blood flow to the kidneys to flush out waste from both the mother and baby.
Fatigue: If you’ve had unprotected sex in the last two weeks and you’re feeling tired and fatigued, there’s a good chance you’re pregnant. Fatigue is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy and within 12-14 days of conception, you may feel fatigued.
Tenderness in the breasts: Breasts too undergo changes during pregnancy. If you have tender breasts, it could be a sign of pregnancy. Yes, if you have tender breasts, you might be pregnant. It’s also common for women to experience a change in the size of the breasts early on in the first few weeks.
Headaches: The hormonal changes that happen in pregnancy can alter blood volume during the first trimester. This means you can experience headaches and even lightheadedness during your wait period. Headaches can also be triggered by stress, fatigue, poor posture, and dehydration.
Cramps: Mild cramping is normal during the early stages of pregnancy as the body prepares for the foetus. Cramping can also be felt just a few days after conception. Many women report twinges on both sides of the body. There is also a concern however that cramping can be a sign of a miscarriage.
The Two-Week Wait After IVF
The two-week wait after an IVF is an emotional time. To some women, it might be one of their most challenging treatments. There are ways to cope and survive your 2WW after IVF and improve your chances of pregnancy. Here are some tips:
Your two-week wait begins right after your embryo transfer is done. From this time onwards, avoid any strenuous physical activities such as lifting heavy weights, extensive workouts, hot baths etc. Get your partner to take care of such things and take it easy.
If you are working, take the whole two weeks off from work, if you can. The embryo takes three or four days to implant after the transfer. This is a critical time and stress and anxiety won’t help, so take time off to relax at home. If you can’t get two weeks, take the first seven days off.
Taking your medication on time is a must. Medications can help keep your embryo alive and the environment in your uterus optimal for implantation. Make a chart for the daily doses of medication and don’t skip a single dose. Set reminders on your phone to take your medicines on time.
A little bit of spotting or bleeding is fine in your two-week wait. In some women, it is also a sign of implantation. It's more likely a good sign, so try not to worry.
Blood thinners are known to protect the pregnancy. Get advice from your clinic if you should take it from the day of transfer or before. They can avoid miscarriage caused by small clots in the blood.
Eat well and get plenty of rest. Avoid stimulants and alcohol for two weeks. Now is a good time to start on a well-balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and carbs.
Try not to test too early or look for pregnancy symptoms, as it will only lead to anxiety. Also, you can get a false positive or negative after an IVF cycle using your own eggs. Hence, waiting for 14 days is recommended.
Avoid sex during your two-week wait period. Your uterus can do with less commotion and avoid any infections.
Don’t panic if you feel cramps or twinges. They are common during the 2WW as your womb is in overdrive. Chances are those feelings mean successful implantation.
Have realistic expectations out of the treatment, know what your odds are and accept them. Prepare for the worst but hope for the best.
Tips to Survive the Two-Week Wait
The two-week wait will obviously be hard for you if you are desperate to get pregnant. But, here are some tips that will help you get through this period.
Take good care of yourself and stay positive. Take a stroll in the park or your garden and just relax. Continue with your exercises, i.e., if you exercise but don't tire yourself out. Get plenty of rest and eat wholesome food.
Allow your feelings to flow. Don’t try to stop that bout of sadness if it passes over you. You need to allow yourself to feel sad now and then so you can clear up the clogged feelings. Trying to suppress them will only make them stronger and worse to deal with later.
Learn relaxation techniques. Yoga, meditation and gentle breathing exercises can help your mind stay calm and clear on a daily basis. More so practising these relaxation techniques can stop you from going into a nervous breakdown while you wait for your test results.
Defensive pessimism is a great psychological technique which you can try. Approaching stressful situations with little to no expectations about the desired outcome can help lower anxiety and enhance your well-being. Try keeping your expectations to a minimum and you’ll cut through a lot of negativity.
Some women tend to think that if they do certain things, be it religious or not or use good luck charms, it can help them. But it won’t. You can’t will yourself into pregnancy so don’t try anything that might interfere with the process. Don’t become superstitious. Be patient and practical - if it is meant to happen, it will. Just keep hoping for the best.
Although it is tempting to only talk about conception to friends and family, try not to do it all the time. It’s also not realistic to stop talking about it altogether. Try to be calm and patient. We know it is better said than done, but give it a try!
Keep yourself busy and by that we mean keep your mind occupied as when your mind will be busy, you won't think about pregnancy. Take some time out to relax - get a manicure or go shopping or hang out with your friends.
Remember that you are not alone in this. Your partner is just as much invested in this as you are. So share your emotional load with him to lighten things up.
Do not spend a lot of time using your computer and the internet. It can become an obsession to continuously read up on all the things that can go wrong. So it's better to not use the internet. Do not worry yourself for no reason!
Signs and Symptoms of Early Pregnancy
Many women feel signs of pregnancy soon after conception, even before a pregnancy test confirms it. If you are anxious, look for these signs during your two-week wait phase and hope for the best.
Tender and swollen breasts. If you do conceive, your bra might feel tighter and the breasts may feel heavier and fuller.
Sensitivity and tingling feeling in your nipples. Every time you lie down on your tummy, you might feel aware of your breasts and some clothing might even feel irritating.
Frequent urination.
Dysgeusia, which is described as having a metallic taste in the mouth.
Feeling a bit off, unsettling, and queasy in the stomach.
Enhanced sense of smell.
Feeling tired all the time, especially after lunch and dinner.
Mood swings and unpredictable emotions.
Some women experience the signs of pregnancy in their two-week wait phase, but others may not. If you don't experience the common symptoms of pregnancy in the two weeks' time, wait and don’t get anxious. If you have waited for too long, these 14 days will pass too, don’t you stress yourself out. Wait for it and you’ll soon get the good news!

Awakening The 7 Chakras for Your Overall Well-Being
Chakra is a Sanskrit word that translates to spinning wheel and symbolises spiritual power in the human body.
We are all beings of energy and interconnected on a spiritual level with the universe. Hinduism and Buddhist scriptures describe how the opening or balancing of these chakras determine the quality and our way of life. As living beings, we have 7 chakras in yoga:
Root chakra (below the tailbone)
Sacral Chakra (few inches below the belly)
Solar Plexus (few inches above the abdomen)
Heart chakra (at heart)
Throat chakra (at the throat)
Third eye chakra (in between the eyebrows, on the forehead)
Crown chakra (top of the head)
How to Open Your Seven Chakras?
Activating the 7 chakras healing benefits begins by first feeling or acquiring a sense of them. You can do this by first going through this 7 chakras meditation exercise.
Seat yourself in a quiet environment, where you won't be disturbed. Inhale and exhale deeply and in a slow manner. Let the tension and stress melt away. Feel your body and mind and drift into stillness.
Now, shift your attention to your tailbone or the base of your spine. Begin by visualising a bright red light that is spinning. Sync its pulsing and rotating sensations with your breath. Pause here for a moment. Move your attention to a few inches below your belly button. Feel a bright yet warm orange light that's spinning this time. Note how it moves with your breath.
Guide your awareness above the belly button towards the gut. You should sense a bright yellow light spinning this time. Hold and continue moving your awareness up towards your chest. It's a green spinning light, and you may coincidentally place your hand there during this process. Shift your attention up to the throat and notice an indigo light spinning. Pause, and finally, move to the top of your head. You should see a violet light spinning and a wave of calmness.

What Are The Benefits of Working from Home?
Let’s take a look at the following ten reasons on why working from home can be beneficial to you:

4. You’ll Learn to be Independent
Since you’ll be on your own without the tech people right across the hall or a support team downstairs, you can get the opportunity to learn more and look for your answers when you get stuck somewhere. Also, working remotely also can help you develop some skills like writing more concise emails or being more sensitive to other people’s schedules.
5. You Can Make Your Schedule
Remote work allows you to have a flexible schedule, as long as you meet your deadlines. You can take breaks when you want, read a book, play some guitar, bust some dance moves and get back to work feeling refreshed.

Working at home allows you to de-clutter your mind and stay away from the needless office politics, gossip and idle chatting.
10. You Can Learn The Importance of Communication
Since you won't be at the office to talk about work each time with your colleagues, you will learn to refine your thoughts so that you can effectively communicate questions or results to them at the next discussion or on your following email.

If there are pros, there are also cons to working from home. Some of them are:
1. Less Team Spirit

5. Communication Costs
Your internet and phone bills might increase.
6. Willpower
You may have problems with willpower when distractions are present at home.
7. Boredom
You might get bored without people around to talk to or gossip with.
Your home may not have the same buzzing energy as the office for you to get fired up.
8. Waiting
You may need to wait long hours till a superior or colleague gets back with the answer to a question you have asked over email.
9. The Difficulty with a Routine
You may find it hard to develop a steady routine and stick to it at home.
10. Wi-Fi Problems
Your home or the café you’re at may have slow Wi-Fi that impedes your work.
At What Environment You Stay Focused?
It is essential to choose the environment you will be focused on. When you’re at the office, maybe the idea of staying under a warm blanket and typing at your laptop may seem attractive. When you’re home, perhaps the idea of working in a buzzing office, laughing with co-workers may seem more fun. So before anything, figure out where you can do your best work and why.
FAQs
Here are a few FAQs on working from home:
‘How does your boss know you are working?’ The answer is, he doesn’t. He needs to trust his employee that they will effectively be working at home.
‘I don’t have the discipline for it’. The answer to this is, yes, being at home allows a lot of distractions. But being in an office does too. Here is where creating a routine becomes essential. Once you do, you will automatically get that discipline.
‘Am I allowed to do tasks not related to office work at home?’ Then the answer is, yes. These can be your breaks from work, like how you do at the office to browse Facebook. If you can keep your deadlines, you can do other tasks like laundry in the form of breaks.
1. Why Do Pregnant Women Prefer Work from Home?
Pregnant women often prefer to work from home for many reasons:
You can take care of your morning sickness and bouts of nausea easier when you are at home instead of the office
You can wear comfortable maternity clothes and relax at home when you are working.
You can add exercise to your schedule, like pregnancy yoga or breathing exercises, when you work from home.
You can juggle your prenatal doctor appointments more easily with other tasks when you work from home.
2. How Working for Home is Beneficial for Breastfeeding Moms?
Breastfeeding mothers benefit a lot from working at home mainly because they get to set their work schedule around their breastfeeding times. Newborns require a lot of attention and working from home can help mothers give that attention when needed. Also, if you are away from your baby for a few hours every day, pumping milk can be a hassle. Being around your baby while working can help you avoid that. You can also be free within your home space to breastfeed your baby without worrying about all your co-workers watching or coming to offer additional help or advice.
Working from home pros and cons are many, but it is important to see which one works for you, where you feel most comfortable and which way allows you to get the most work done.

Things to Watch Out for When You Become a New Mother
I have become a new mother recently, and there have been different avenues I am exploring each and every day. However as I am a new mother, I have no prior knowledge about motherhood, I had an unclear notion of motherhood, so every day became a learning experience for me.
There are five things which I need to keep a watch as and when my child is growing up, and those are:
1. Whether My Child Is Well Hydrated or Not
Because during summer it is very essential to take note of how many times my child is peeing. My child is four months old, and she fully relies on my breast milk. So, it is important to watch if my breast milk suffices her hunger or not. She sweats a lot, so sometimes her pee count gets reduced. So I had to keep feeding her almost on her demand just to make her pee count six every day. And we all know, mother's milk works as an antibody for them and it contains 90% of water. So it is very important to feed your baby only with your breast milk upto six months of age.
2. Whether My Child Is Getting the Right Skincare and Haircare
It is very difficult to choose the right skincare and haircare brand for a child because you do not know what type your child's skin is, it might be sensitive too. So it is always essential to read the ingredients before purchasing a baby care product. I did not have too much knowledge about the ingredients so I researched each and every ingredient. I was looking forward to something that can actually have a higher percentage of natural ingredients percentage as compared to the chemical ingredients. So after my research, I came across a brand for both mother and baby. So, I started with their baby care range when my doctor gave me a green signal to use baby products for my child. I started initially with their baby body lotion, baby powder, and baby hair oil. All three products are extremely efficacious. The products consist of organic ingredients which are beneficial for my child's skin. The lotion has helped to get rid of her flaky skin. It has a soothing agent. The hair oil worked really well on her cradle cap. Due to her cradle cap, she was having hairfall too. The hairfall also got reduced. I use the powder before and after changing her diaper. It absorbs the wetness and makes the area dry. Touchwood, my baby doesn't suffer from diaper rashes because of this powder. I am looking forward to using all their baby care products.
3. I Try to Keep My Eyes on Her
I am always worried about my baby, whether she is eating or sleeping properly or not. I try to keep my eyes on her 24×7. I try to find out the reason if she refuses her feed or sleep. As I am new to this journey, I try to find out the reason behind her cry. Whether she is crying out of colic pain, or hunger, sometimes it becomes very difficult to understand. But as usual, I try my best to keep her calm.
4. To Maintain Proper Hygiene and Care
As I have become a mother in this COVID-19 pandemic, I always try to maintain proper hygiene when it comes to my baby. I usually ask people to sanitise themselves, when anyone comes to see my daughter, and it is applicable for my family members too. I try to keep everything clean and sanitised around her. From changing bedsheets and pillow covers to changing curtains, all this has become my regular duties. I regularly wash and dry her toys because nowadays she puts everything into her mouth. So in this current situation, it is very important to keep everything clean around her.
5. To Ensure Her Safety
Keeping in mind our surrounding situations, I always try to keep my baby safe from anything and everything. I do keep her private parts covered all the time. I always give her a bath in an enclosed room. I do not let anyone touch her despite my family members. In these ways, I try to ensure her safety and well-being.
Taking care of a child is not an easy task. Irrespective of everything, a baby always becomes our topmost priority. So these are the things that I usually watch out for after becoming a mother.
