Feng Shui Tips to Make Your Home Healthier and Happier
The ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui has gained immense popularity worldwide. Getting started with Feng Shui for the home is really easy. Here is how you do it.
What Is Feng Shui?
Feng shui is an ancient art and a science that originated in China over 3000 years ago. The meaning of Feng is “wind”, and Shui means “water”. According to Chinese culture, water and wind represent good health. Thus, good fortune comes from good feng shui. Sometimes, it is also thought to be an art. This art of placement understands how objects and spaces around you affect your life in many ways. Its body of knowledge teaches how to harmonise and balance the energies in the available spaces at home, garden, or your office.
Feng Shui Tips to Invite Good Energy in Your Home
Good fortune comes in so many different forms - a successful career, better health, or fulfilling life. This is why this practice includes tips in details in many areas of our lives.
1. Use the Front Door
There are so many people that get into their homes through their back door after driving up into their garage. Though this method is really convenient, from the perspective of feng shui, this limits the arrival of opportunities and good energy in your life because the chi is represented by the entry door that enters your home, and thus, your life. So, at least once a week use the front door. The more you do it, the better! Just open and close it when you do regular activities like getting the mail or taking a walk.
2. Fix Those Squeaks
The entry door of your home is the last and the first thing you deal with when going or coming from your home. Does it squeak or make noise when you close or open it? This sound will be like your door is crying and this has a chance to affect your well-being and mood. Many people do not notice it because they have become so used to the noise. The solution is to oil the door and spread the positive energy when you leave and enter your home. You could also oil all the other doors if they squeak, but the entry door is the most important of them all.
3. The Feng Shui Fountain
In feng shui, water represents wealth. Many people do not have any idea about where the best place to place the feng shui fountain is. The principles of feng shui for a happy home believe that it is more advantageous when the fountain is near the main entrance of your home. It could either be outside or inside your home, but the water should flow towards the centre of the house which is very important. The meaning of this is that just like this water, opportunities will flow into your life.
4. Plants on the Kitchen Cabinets
Go to your kitchen and take a look at the cabinets. Check if they are soffit or built up the ceiling. If there is no space between your kitchen cabinets and ceiling, it’s still good feng shui according to feng shui house design rules. If there are empty spaces above the cabinets, then it attracts dust, and the whole energy is stagnant. The chi encourages dead energy as it gets stuck there, which might pull you back in life. So if there is space, place some green plants and lighting! The plants could be live or very realistic. You could also place some beautiful or meaningful objects, thus bringing life to that area transforming the entire energy.
5. Close Those Bathroom Doors
When it comes to feng shui, so many people are concerned about their bathrooms. The basic idea here is that water is always flowing inside your home. Since water is a representation of wealth, we do not want wealth to be flushed away. Though water does come back after it is drained, it is better if you always keep the toilet seat cover down. Also, close the bathroom door to reduce this effect.
6. The Location of Your Bed
In feng shui, when it comes to locating important furniture like your bed, the “commanding position” is used. To place in the commanding position, the bed is the most important piece of furniture since you will be spending so many hours sleeping on it. So, to place this bed in the commanding position make sure you are facing the door when the bed is not in line with the door when you lie on it. The ideal place is across the room, diagonally, from the door. This might not always be possible. When such is the case, look for a mirror and keep it in a place where you will be able to see the door while you are on the bed. Freestanding mirrors are the best since you can get the adjustment right.
7. Cover up Your Bedroom TV
Televisions in the bedroom are a common thing. If you have problems when it comes to getting good sleep or even if you don’t, it is best to keep the television covered when you are not using it. The TV and all of its electronic aspects have active energy that might be disruptive to the quiet and calm energy which is more conducive to bedrooms and sleep. This is why you can cover the TV up with a beautiful scarf or any other fabric.
8. Clean All the Windows
A good place to start your yearly cleaning is the windows. Windows are the symbol of your eyes to the world. We all want to be able to experience and see everything the universe has to offer. Take an old newspaper, some water, and a bottle of vinegar and clean those windows! Brighten that space and open your eyes.
9. Do a Space Clearing
Our homes and the environment retain the energy that is present in the spaces. You can always take a little time and burn the old energy to welcome the new and fresh chi. You could burn some palo santo or spray natural orange essential oil with some water. Palo santo could be used every day, and orange oil is something you could use to uplift your spirits. No matter what you use, you should be able to fill the empty spaces with positive energy and your dreams for the future.
10. Balance the Five Elements
The five basic elements are earth, fire, wood, water, and metal. This can be represented in your home either symbolically or physically. For example, you could use warm colours like red or orange to bring the fire element. You could also burn a candle or use a fireplace. The idea is that all the elements are essential for our lives and an imbalance in these colours would cause an imbalance in life. Therefore, look closely at the literal and the symbolic meaning of the things around you.
Opportunities are always passing through our doors. If it likes what it sees, then it will also bring amazing energy to our doorsteps. Feng shui has always represented energies and their relationship to the world. When it’s positive and captivating, that is the kind of energy that you would want to let in and flow through your home.

IUI Treatment - Side-Effects and Risks
Most couples who are unable to conceive naturally may opt for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI). In case you are also considering intrauterine insemination as a means to get pregnant, it is important to understand the side effects and risks involved in the treatment which may help you to make the right decision for yourself.
Intrauterine insemination does not require any surgery. The process of intrauterine insemination involves encouraging ovulation with fertility drugs. Then the doctor may place specially prepared sperm straight into your uterus through the cervix close to your usual ovulation time. This direct insertion may help the sperm to travel easily to the egg cell. The sperm sample can belong to your male partner or even to a third-party donor.
Most women who have opted for intrauterine insemination have experienced minimal side effects of the procedure and found the treatment to be fairly painless. In case you may still have some concerns regarding the procedure it is always better to discuss your doubts in detail with your doctor for proper guidance and advise.
Side-Effects of Intrauterine Insemination
All medical procedures usually have some side effects or the other. Intrauterine insemination also can have certain side effects though most of the side effects are known to be minor.
In some cases, the doctor may prescribe fertility drugs to enhance the rate of success of the procedure. The fertility drugs tend to stimulate hyper ovulation wherein the ovaries release multiple eggs. Many of the side effects of IUI treatment may arise due to these fertility drugs rather than from the procedure itself.
However, the side effects triggered by taking the fertility drugs are generally mild and vanish after the discontinuation of medication. Some of the IUI fertility treatment side effects can be:
Slight abdominal pain or mild cramping
Light spotting for a couple of days
Hot flashes
Headaches
Nausea
Depression or mood swings
Visual disturbances
Painful and swollen ovaries
Tender breasts
Bloating
Some pelvic discomfort
Ovarian cysts
A rash or slight swelling about the injection spot
Likely IUI side effects on baby can include multiple births
In some rare cases, the side effects of IUI treatment can manifest in a severe form like difficulty in breathing, darkened urine, severe cramps, a sudden increase in weight. In such a scenario inform your doctor immediately.
What Risks Can Occur After IUI Treatment?
Some possible iui complications of IUI treatment can be:
1. Risk of Multiples
The risk of conceiving with twins or more children after IUI treatment is quite small. Becoming pregnant with multiples is a side effect of fertility drugs taken during the IUI treatment. Multiple pregnancies can cause increased IUI risks to baby like miscarriage, premature delivery, gestational diabetes, low birth weight, preeclampsia (high blood pressure), complications at birth.
2. Risk of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)
The fertility drugs used for the IUI treatment may result in Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome. Common fertility drugs like Clomid, Letrozole are administered before the IUI cycle to enhance ovulation which causes ovaries to produce over twenty follicles in one go. The hyper ovulation may pump up body’s estrogen levels resulting in inflammation of the ovaries. Enlarged ovaries can lead to bloating, severe abdominal pain, vomiting or nausea, and breathing issues.
3. Risk of Infection
There may be a slight risk of infection during the IUI procedure as it involves inserting a thin tube through the cervix to place the sperm in the uterine cavity. Some women may experience some pain or cramping during the insertion. But the higher risk during insertion can be likely injury to the cervix causing acute pain, spotting or bleeding after the procedure. Therefore, doctors mostly advise resting for a while after the culmination of the procedure to lessen the chances of any possible distress.
Intrauterine insemination is a simple process and is considered to be among the least invasive methods. The side effects associated with the process are also very minimal. Most of the side effects of IUI treatment usually subside with time or get eliminated after the stoppage of fertility medications.

Lactose Intolerance during Pregnancy
Calcium is very important for you in your pregnancy as it is important for optimum foetal growth and development, mainly for building your baby’s bones and teeth. Milk is a preferred source of calcium, but if you are lactose intolerant, then you will be advised not to drink milk. However, there are other dietary sources that may help you fulfil your body’s daily requirement of calcium.
Let us see what are the causes, symptoms and the treatment for lactose intolerance in pregnancy and what can be done to manage your condition.
What is Lactose Intolerance?
Lactose is a kind of sugar, which is mainly present in animal milk and other kinds of dairy products. When your body cannot produce enough lactase, an enzyme that is required to digest lactose, you become lactose intolerant. If you have this condition, then the lactose you consume may sit in your intestine and not get digested; this may lead to gastrointestinal problems. Lactose intolerance may cause extreme discomfort but it, not a serious ailment. However, it is important to remember that lactose intolerance and cow milk allergy are not the same. Cow milk allergy may occur when your immune system reacts to cow's milk by showing an allergic reaction because of the protein in cow’s milk. Though the symptoms of both these conditions may appear the same, they are very different from each other.
What Causes Lactose Intolerance in Pregnancy?
If you are thinking 'can pregnancy cause lactose intolerance', the answer is little complicated to reach at. Pregnancy hormones may cause many changes in your body and your digestive tract may get affected too. Your immune system makes everything slow, and that may affect the way your food gets digested too, this may sometimes make you think that you are lactose intolerant. However, that may not be the case; on the other hand, if you are already battling with lactose intolerance, then pregnancy may reduce your symptoms. Here are some known causes of lactose intolerance in pregnancy:
It may occur due to genetic reasons.
It may occur in case your small intestines get injured; this may hamper the production of lactase.
So as you can see, pregnancy does not directly cause lactose intolerance, but it changes your body in such a way that digesting milk becomes hard.
Signs and Symptoms of Lactose Intolerance
You may notice these symptoms and signs as soon as you consume anything that contains lactose in it:
Your tummy may ache
You may experience gas
You may experience nausea or vomiting
You may feel bloated
You may experience diarrhoea
You may experience cramping
How is Lactose Intolerance Diagnosed
As soon as you notice any of the above-mentioned symptoms, it is important that you seek immediate medical help. Your doctor will come to a deduction based on your symptoms and may advise you to avoid dairy-based goods for a few days to see whether or not you are lactose intolerant.
In some cases, pregnancy symptoms may get confused with lactose intolerance because nausea, vomiting and cramping are the common side-effects of pregnancy too. Your doctor may like you conduct a blood sugar test to make the correct diagnosis.
How to Get Enough Calcium
Milk is rich in calcium, and when you are lactose intolerant, then you will have to look for other healthy alternatives to compensate for your body’s growing calcium needs in pregnancy. Here are some of the options that you may consider:
1. Consuming Whole Grains and Nuts
Various kinds of nuts such as almonds, walnuts and pulses contain a good amount of calcium in them. Consuming them on a regular basis takes care of your calcium requirements. Being rich in antioxidants nuts are excellent for the development of your baby’s bones and collagen.
2. Eat Broccoli
Broccoli is not only rich in calcium, but you also get good amounts of iron and other minerals from it too.
3. Go Green
Green leafy vegetables have good amounts of calcium in them and thus including them in your daily diet will be a good idea. One such leafy vegetable is spinach, which is high in calcium, iron and other vitamins.
4. Tofu and Soy Milk
Soy milk is a good substitute for milk and provides ample calcium to your body. You may include soy milk and tofu in your diet too.
5. Almond Milk
Almond milk is a delicious way to pep up your calcium requirements. It is also rich in protein and omega 3 fatty acids.
You can include any of the above-mentioned options for a lactose-free milk pregnancy; however, it is important that before you make any amends in your pregnancy diet, you should consult your health practitioner.
How to Treat Lactose Intolerance During Pregnancy
Lactose intolerance cannot be treated, but it can be managed. Here are some ways that may help you manage your lactose intolerance during pregnancy:
1. Diet
On an average, you are required to consume 1000 mg of calcium in a day during pregnancy. You may add various food items that are rich in calcium such as okra, beans, spinach, salmon etc. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. You may eat eggs or expose yourself to sunlight for some time to meet your body’s requirement of vitamin D. Eating fortified foods such as orange juice and bread are very effective in pepping up your vitamin D intake.
2. Multivitamins
You can also take the prenatal vitamin to compensate for your body’s requirement of calcium. Make sure these multivitamins have the required amount of calcium and vitamin D, or you can take calcium and vitamin D in addition with to your multivitamins.
Can Lactose Intolerance Affect Your Baby
Lactose intolerance does not affect your baby because your baby will meet its calcium requirement by drawing the calcium from your teeth and bones. This means that even if you do not consume enough calcium during pregnancy, your baby will still take it from you. But this puts the mother under the risk of having devastating long-term problems. Therefore, it is important that you meet your body’s calcium requirements by making some dietary amends and taking calcium supplements.
Can Lactose Intolerance in Pregnancy be Prevented
Lactose intolerance cannot be prevented, but in order to avoid sudden lactose intolerant during pregnancy you may adopt the following measures:
You should maintain a food diary and make entry of the foods that you consume. In this way, you will be able to establish your triggers.
You will need to eliminate dairy products from your diet. This works best in keeping you away from lactose intolerance.
Always check the food labels to check for the ingredients and avoid the ones who have lactose in them.
Whenever you are eating out, you may ask to avoid any dairy products in your dish.
In case you feel that you have lactose intolerance, it is suggested that you get in touch with your doctor. Your doctor may conduct various tests to detect lactose intolerance. It is also suggested that you should not make any changes in your diet without consulting your doctor.
