Since many food options are open for your child, we’re sure he will grow to like foods that are different from what he has been given all this time. Low Back Pain during Pregnancy - Causes and Tips to Control Pain
Lower back pain is a very common problem faced by women during pregnancy. This pain can be present from the early stage of pregnancy or can be seen in the later stage. The pain in the lower back area can be localised or can spread upwards or downwards from the legs.
Causes of Lower Back Pain
1. Change in Posture
As the baby bump grows, the inward lordotic curvature of the spine (lumbar area) increases. Due to this change in posture, the back muscle, adjacent joints and ligaments have to work more for compensation and thus pain develops.
2. Weak Abdominal Muscles
Muscles of the back support our spine. Weak abdominal muscles put extra stress on our spine, thus back muscles have to work more to hold the spine correctly. With the growing baby bump, the abdominal muscles become weaker, putting extra strain on the muscles, joints and ligaments of the back.
3. Joint Laxity
Relaxin hormone is released to soften the ligaments and loosen the joint structure for the accommodation of the growing uterus. This ligament laxity is responsible for pain.
4. Stretching
Stretching of the abdominal muscles and hip muscles also causes pain in the lower back.
5. Narrowing of the Spinal Canal
Increase in the curvature of the spine leads to a narrower canal due to which the nerve passing through this canal gets compressed and the pregnant mom feels pain in the leg.
6. Centre of Gravity
As the baby bump grows, the centre of gravity shifts forward which can lead to falling. To prevent falling, the spine and other parts of the body try to adjust. This change in body posture puts extra pressure on the back and other areas, thus leading to pain.
7. Poor Posture or Positioning
Poor posture, standing or sitting for a long time, lying down incorrectly may also develop pain.
8. Multipara Women
Women with multiple pregnancies generally develop pain in the back if they are having weak abdominal muscles.
9. Excess Weight
Women with more weight are likely to develop back pain as the weight of the baby also adds up, putting extra pressure on the spine.
10. Stress
Stress is also one of the psychological factors which can develop pain.
Tips To Control Pain
Try practising good posture by keeping the body straight, holding the shoulder back, and not locking the knees. The body should be relaxed.
Always try to stand with both feet a little apart so that you can get a wide base of support.
Avoid standing or sitting for long. Put a pillow on the lower back curvature of the spine while sitting, and while standing, put one foot on a low stool.
Lie on your sides with a pillow between legs.
Wear a supportive or maternity belt.
Avoid wearing high heels or flat slippers. A heel with a good arch is better.
Avoid forward bending. Always lift objects by squatting.
Try doing physical activity like walking, and easy household activities.
Freehand exercise and mild stretching can also be done.
Try doing back exercises.
Warm compress or massage can be helpful.
Sleep on a firm mattress.
Precautions
If you are having severe back pain for more than 2 weeks, and fever, vaginal bleeding, and burning during urination is present, than it can be a sign of urinary tract infection or preterm labour. Contact your gynaecologist.

World Mental Health Day - Objective, Origin and Ways to Celebrate
The number of people suffering from depression or neurological complaints is steadily increasing by the day all across the world. There is now an urgent need to help people, particularly adolescents, to develop mental resilience from a young age so that they are better equipped to handle the challenges of life. Also, it is equally crucial to extend proper diagnosis and treatment to those distressed by any form of mental ailment.
A dedicated mental health day can help achieve this. So, when is world mental health day? World Mental Health Day is recognised across the world on October 10. This initiative of WFMH (World Federation for Mental Health) which has the United Nations (UN) backing, was first held on October 10, 1992. It also enjoys support from WHO, prominent country leaders and many international organisations. It is active in more than 150 countries. The goal of the enterprise is to generate public awareness about the importance of mental health problems and to empower people so that they may shed their inhibitions and come forward to talk about it. It aims to encourage open discussions on various illnesses along with bigger investments in their deterrence and treatment services.
Why Is World Mental Health Day Celebrated?
World Mental Health Day intends to offer to people a world wherein mental health matters are a priority for everyone by building consciousness at home, in school and workplace, to fight against all social stigma. It aims to do so by igniting discussions and empowering those who remain silent for fear of being shunned, and celebrating all those who have successfully overcome mental health challenges. It plans to ensure that mental health upkeep and care is a reality for individuals universally.
However, mental health services are deficient of financial and human resources in most countries, especially backward economies and developing countries. Added funding is required to promote the issue and create responsiveness about it so that it becomes a global priority. In such a scenario, the importance of world mental health day increases by many folds.
What Is the History of World Mental Health Day?
Every year October 10 is commemorated as World Mental Health Day. On 10 October 1992, Richard Hunter, Deputy Secretary General of WFMH initiated it as a yearly activity. Originally, the day did not have any specific theme. Its general purpose was to endorse mental health support and educate people on relevant issues. For the first three years, to celebrate the day, a two-hour broadcast was organised through US information agency from studios based in Tallahassee, Florida. WFMH board members joined the telecast with live telephone sharing from Chile, Australia, Zambia, England and pre-taped sections from Atlanta, Geneva and Mexico City. But soon it was realised that they need to expand their reach and impact. Thus in 1994, a theme (Improving the quality of mental health services throughout the world) was selected for the day for the foremost time. Within no time, the day became a vital occasion for organisations, government departments and committed folks to schedule programs to focus and highlight different facets of mental health care.

Two Easy and Effective Tips on How to Be a Happy Mommy!
Hi beautiful mommies!
As a busy mom of two, I find it very hard to find 'me time' in my day; and I am sure you guys feel the same way. Yes, like you I have browsed through many articles that give tips on how to achieve more from your day. But, here I am not going to give you any more gyaan on how to manage your time better.
Instead, I am going to give you two easy and effective tips that have worked for me. These are more habits than tips that have helped me invest in self-care which in turn have helped me become a happier mommy!
Get Ready for the Day:
Mommying is a full-time job, so why not take the time to get ready for it? No, you don't have to go to an office to get ready for work. You can take five minutes to put on some kajal and lip gloss even if you are a stay-at-home mom. The point here is to not look good, but feel good. Those five minutes I take in front of the mirror give me the spring in my step; the 'I am ready to take on anything' kind of vibe which helps me stay cool and happy for the most part of the day!
Do What You Love:
You are an amazing mommy, but there is so much more to you than your super mom powers. YouGet ready for the day: are an individual with talents and passions. I enjoy music, so I try and incorporate it in my day however I can. So, if you love sketching, get colouring with your kiddos. If you love fashion, create a fashion wardrobe for your kiddos, and so on.
There are days when my house is a complete mess and I jump to a 'clean up, clean up' rap song with my kiddos. It instantly brings a smile on my face and creates a moment of happiness.
Finding happiness in little the things is cliche, but it is a truth that will help you achieve so much more by pushing you forward in your journey as a mom. Good luck!

The Benefits of Helping Preschoolers Understand and Discuss Their Emotions
Your baby has grown up entered the terrible two's. Every emotion is overwhelming for him and he most likely will not know how to express how he is feeling. Learn some tried and tested ways to help your child understand and express their emotions in a healthy way.
They aren't called the terrible two's and three's for no reason. Or for that matter even the fearsome fours. All these scary terms boil down to the exact same thing – your child hasn't learn to recognize and deal with emotions just yet. This more often than not leads to tantrums and major meltdowns that leave you feeling helpless, frustrated or even anxious!
Some may say they'll grow out of it and indeed they will, but is it wise to just “let them be” or are there some life lessons to be taught at this fragile stage? Are there some long-term benefits to be learnt at this point?
Studies prove by both theory and practicality that emotional intelligence begins to develop at a very young age. If children are taught to find solutions to overwhelming emotions, they can gain a lifelong skill at a tiny age. It is proved that such children are less aggressive, kinder adults who are better at academics as well.
There are a few conscious things caregivers can do to help children in this stage of life.
1. Give Emotions A Name
Helping your child put down a concept or association to the image can help him deal better with it. Observe the behaviour, whether it be yelling, crying or not speaking at all, and take the child through a 'reflection' process. Ask then why they are behaving that way, what made them unhappy or angry. They will learn to associate different stimuli with certain emotions.
2. Make Emotions 'Normal'
Try not to classify emotions as good or bad at the age when children are learning to deal with them. Every emotion at this stage is overwhelming and so normalizing every emotion helps to comfort them when they are angry, sad or fearful. It helps them know that every human being feels these emotions, helping them get a better perspective. Give them examples of when you felt the same way and how you reacted. And find a solution to the emotion that helps comfort and reduce the burden of it.
3. Develop Acceptable Solutions
Teaching a child what actions are appropriate to an overwhelming emotion is as important as teaching them the emotion itself. Help them to verbalise what is okay and what isn't. This is also a good time to teach them “time outs”. For e.g. taking a break by yourself when you are angry with someone or napping when tiredness makes you irritable.
4. Read Picture Books
This doesn't seem like the obvious choice but reading fiction actually helps a child understand empathy. Apart from that, the pictorial representations help them understand emotions through illustrations better.
Did you use any of these methods to help your child emote better? Did you have other techniques of helping your child express his emotions in a healthy manner? Do write in and let us know! Read more
