Mobile Phone and Kids : A necessary menace of current times
A few days back while going to my hospital, my attention was drawn towards this kid. This was around an under construction house. There was a pile of cement or maybe sand on which he was standing atop and his parents were busy carrying bricks and other building stuff from one place to another while the little one who must have been somewhere between 3-5years was busy scrolling through this smartphone looking to find something that may interest him.
It was amusing to watch his concentration and focus towards this device ; at the same time it provided an opportunity for his parents to carry on with their work. What was rattling that all this was happening road side and if attention was not paid he may walk over to some dangerous spot and get hurt. Couldn't see anyone keeping an eye on him in particular but may be one of his parents was.
Then I think that all of us at our homes have been using the mobile phones to engage or distract kids, be it while giving food or just to distract them when some important work call is going on. It has become a necessary menace of our lives, necesssary because it has made work easier and in today's times of small nuclear families it is a great help ; menace because the kids are getting too much addicted to it. The current pandemic has added the screen exposure amongst kids due to online schooling, limited outdoor activities and other sources of entertainment.
Though there are numerous apps for kids and it's full of so many information for all ages ,internet is like a blind well, the more you enter it the more dangerous it becomes. Sometimes videos with inappropriate content may flash in between the kids videos or the advertisement in between the games are not appropriate for their age. The risks and strain on eyes because of the mobile blue light is also well known .
So should we banish use of mobile phones by kids. I don't think it would be possible anytime soon. The mobile carries the same craze that video games and television had when we were kids, the problem is the level of exposure, lack of enough control over the use and the close proximity from which a mobile is being used.
It becomes important that we should allow them use of such devices only under supervision so that we can keep a watch over the quantity and the quality of the content. Secondly avoiding use of cellphone beyond 15-20minutes at time is good for their eyes and age. Using laptops for studying and television for entertainment are somewhat better as we can regulate the distance and can keep a watch easily. There have numerous recommendations on the use of mobile phones and other screens in kids but keep the practical aspects in mind of the current scenario and changing family equations things have tto be balanced somewhere in the midway.
And then I think of this family working on the road for whom it's about what they are earning on daily basis to make their ends meet, how they are coping in their own ways and the diligence of this little boy who is lost in his world of mobile not bothering by absence of his parents, road side traffic or any other thing in this whole world.
