8. Sesame Oil
Sesame oil is often used in Indian, Asian, and Middle Eastern cooking. It helps in maintaining a healthy blood pressure level and reducing body mass and body weight. 9. Flaxseed Oil
Flaxseed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. This is one dietary omega-3 fatty acid that the human body cannot make on its own. 1. Palm Oil
High in saturated fat, palm oil should be avoided, more so if you are suffering from heart disease.

Tips to Click Christmas Portraits of Babies
The festive season gives parents and kids the perfect opportunity for a photoshoot. If you're planning to have a shoot this winter, these Christmas photo ideas for babies can be of big help. Get your props ready and frame your angel in the perfect light!
It’s that time of the year when you’re ready to welcome Christmas and send out gifts to friends and loved ones. Being a proud mom of a beautiful baby, your gifting idea may include a Christmas card with baby Christmas pictures of your darling. It’s a wonderful idea but getting the perfect click might need some prior preparation. Here are some baby Christmas photoshoot tips that are sure to come in handy.
Baby Portrait Photography For Christmas
Babies can be quite challenging to click, as they may keep moving or want to be picked up and carried around. Not to mention, the bright lights flashing in their face might startle them and cause a crying fit. However, it is possible to get adorable baby Christmas photos with these easy tips.
1. Look for the Perfect Timing
Photographing children, especially infants, is a challenge because they don’t understand that they need to stay still. Your baby will be her usual self, irrespective of your mood and convenience. Before you start looking for ways to shoot a baby portrait, it’s important that you choose the right time for it. Make sure your child is fed and rested so that she’s calmer and happier.
2. Light It Up
Lighting for baby photography should be soft. Anything too harsh can irritate your child and make her cranky. Try to shoot pictures in natural light, and if you can’t, make sure light sources are evenly distributed around the room to prevent strain on the eyes. Consider photographing your baby with Christmas lights too. Take a string of twinkling fairy lights and arrange it around a fluffy cushion. Sit your baby down and place pinecones, balls of cotton wool and small Santa hats on the edges.
3. Bring in Props
Avoid the clichéd baby Santa costume that’s been done to death. A better baby Christmas photo idea is to suit up your darling in an elf outfit. You can also dress her as a cute candy cane. A baby carriage, a wicker basket with felt lining, baubles and gift wrapped boxes can be arranged around her for an even more festive feel.
4. Getting up Close
Once you have everything in place, you’re set to get that perfect click. Wide-angle shots are great but don’t hesitate to get close-ups of your baby too. Bring her into focus and create a nice blurry background in portrait mode, which looks great. A great Christmas portrait photography pose for your baby is to have her sit with the family pet. A Santa hat perched on your cat or dog’s head will make for an adorable touch.
5. Angled Shots
Sometimes, staged photos turn out to be disappointments, especially where babies are concerned. If you’re having a hard time getting your child to pose, leave her free to crawl and move around. Use the moments to click candid pictures from different angles. You can set the mood by hanging up decorations, lighting the tree, laying out silver streamers and throwing in a few of her favourite toys to play with.
6. Make Her Laugh
An incredibly cute baby Christmas picture is one in which your baby looks happy and full of life. Try and make your baby laugh by making noises, talking to him, playing a game, or doing anything else that never fails to crack your baby up. Work fast to capture multiple shots of your baby laughing and choose the best one.
7. Focus on the Baby's Eyes
Babies have big, round eyes that light up the room, so maintain the camera's focus on your little one's eyes for some absolutely adorable pictures. One newborn Christmas picture trick to easily click the baby's eyes is to make your munchkin lie down and take the shot from above. As you stand above her, she'll look up at you, wide and happy.
8. Talk to Her
Talking to your baby will ensure that she maintains eye contact with you, which gives you plenty of time to take the perfect shot. Coo at her, make cute faces and funny sounds, and guide her towards looking into the camera.
Christmas is a great opportunity to take pictures, especially if this is your baby's first Christmas photoshoot. Share your joy of being a mom and show off your creativity by making good use of props and lighting. This Christmas, get geared up for the ultimate photoshoot with your little angel. Read more

Folic Acid for Fertility - Does It Help?
Proper nutrition is key to a healthy pregnancy. Hence, if you are looking to conceive, it is vital that you take the required supplements to ensure that your body is in the best condition.
One of the substances that is generally recommended for women trying to conceive is folic acid. It aids in the production of red blood cells as well as DNA. While it is known that are a lot of benefits that come with ingesting folic acid for pregnant women, it is equally beneficial for women trying to get pregnant and for men as well.
What is Folic Acid?
A synthetic form of the vitamin B9, folic acid is one of the water-soluble vitamins that aid the fundamental action of cell metabolism. It is one of the eight vitamins that are soluble in water and in its natural form, vitamin B9 is called folate. They are found in many foods that are eaten commonly including spinach, pumpkin, oysters, carrots, okra, asparagus, liver and broccoli. There are a lot of other foods that provide the same, including poultry, rice, beans, eggs, nuts, meat and dairy products.
If needed, folic acid can be added to other foods so as to increase their vitamin content. It can be found in nutritional supplements as well if needed and they’re found in bread, pasta, cereals, rice and a lot of other grain-based foods.
How does Folic Acid Help Increase Fertility?
Folic acid is known to be great for fertility. Here are some ways it can enhance fertility.
Male Fertility
Folic acid plays a role in helping male fertility and increasing chances of helping the sperm fertilize the egg. Here are some other ways in which it is useful:
Higher sperm count:
Folic acid increases sperm count and this can help men gain the necessary supplements in order to help their partners get pregnant. While women need to generally time their cycle correctly and know when they’re ovulating, sometimes; the problems could be with her man. When a man’s sperm count is low, there won’t be enough sperm to travel and fertilize the egg because the pathway is long.
This pathway runs via the fallopian tubes from the cervix to the egg and the sperm generally traverses this path. If pregnancy occurs when the man takes 700 mcg of folic acid, then it can be attributed to the folic acid.
Lesser risk of sperm abnormalities
When men consume folic acid, it doesn’t only help with their sperm count but actually helps in reducing their 20 to 30%. This reduces the risk of chromosomal abnormalities which can end up leading to birth defects such as Down Syndrome.
While it was believed that babies were born with chromosomal disorders due to egg defects, it has come to light that sperm abnormalities can cause issues as well. Folic acid consumption on a regular basis can help in bringing down these problems and improving fertility in men.
Boosts fertility when taken with other supplements
The best way to make folic acid work for men is to have it with other male fertility supplements such as Vitamin C and zinc. These can help increase sperm count and improve the quality of the sperm as well. When mixed with folic acid, they can help increase the overall motility and usefulness of the sperm. Folic acid boosts fertility in men by around 74% in a study conducted by a Netherlands-based medical University.
Female Fertility
Folic acid is crucial in enabling women to increase their chances of pregnancy by improving the fertility conditions in her body. Here are some of the ways in which folic acid is beneficial for women:
Working with other vitamins
By working with other vitamins and minerals, folic acid helps women to get pregnant faster by improving conditions for sperm fertilization. There are a lot of other vitamins that aid in the process and folic acid is not the only one required. Women are generally advised to have a folic acid supplement along with a prenatal vitamin that usually has about 40 mcg of the nutrients.
A bit of extra folic acid is always recommended along with vitamin C, vitamin B6, zinc, iron and niacin amongst others to help get pregnant.
Increase the egg quality
Similar to how folic acid improves the quality of sperm in men, it also aids in improving the egg quality in women. If women begin having folic acid a few months before they attempt conceiving, then the chance of a baby born with a chromosomal/birth defect reduces greatly. The folic acid will help in keeping the egg healthy and away from any disease-causing agents.
Improve the quality of the cervical mucus
Consistency in the cervical mucus is very important when it comes to helping women conceive. A lot of women chart their cycles by checking the texture and colour of the cervical mucus but when the ovulation is near, it is important to note that there is a substantial amount of the mucus. This mucus helps the sperm travel and meet the egg.
Prevent anaemia
Women who suffer from even the slightest bouts of anaemia can find it hard to ovulate because the lack of iron can disturb the balance of the hormones. When close to 400 mcg of folic acid is added to other mineral supplements, at least 3 months before conceiving, it can help increase the levels of iron in the blood. Iron helps in regulating the hormonal regulation and due to this, ovulation will return to expected levels.
Recommended Intake of Folic Acid for Men and Women
The intake levels of folic acid for men and women can be segregated as follows:
For women 14 years and above, as well as for men, 400 mcg is recommended
For breastfeeding women, 500 mcg
For pregnant women, 600 mcg
Enriched bread and cereals are the best way to get your dose of folate and folic acid. Most of the foods are added with extra folic acid, so regular consumption of these should improve fertility levels.
Foods that are Rich in Folic Acid
Here are a few foods that have rich content of folic acid in them. You can consume them regularly to help your body gain the necessary nourishment:
Food
Amount
Beef liver
215 mcg
Spinach
131 mcg
Asparagus
89 mcg
Black-eyed peas
105 mcg
White rice
90 mcg
Romaine lettuce

Brussels sprouts

Is It Safe for Women to take Folic Acid Supplements?
Folic acid is an important requirement for women and despite it being added to breads and cereals, a lot of women don’t get enough of it. Women who are looking to get pregnant are recommended a daily dose of 400 mcg of folic acid. During pregnancy, around 600 mcg is advised.
A lot of doctors will recommend prenatal vitamins to help women conceive or just a multivitamin to be had daily. As long as the multivitamin includes 400 mcg of folic acid, it is good to go. Folic acid is also a water-soluble vitamin so it needs to be replaced on a daily basis.
What are the Risks of taking High Doses of Folic Acid?
There are risks involved when you end up having too much folic acid as well and it is important that you only have the dosage recommended by your doctor. The daily intake of folic acid should not exceed more than 1000 mcg. Large doses may cover for vitamin B-12 deficiency but folic acid and infertility can occur if too much is consumed. B-12 levels need to be tested before going ahead and including extra supplements.
Also, high doses can harm the DNA synthesis inside the sperm and it can also interact with other medications. Folic acid can reduce the effectiveness of phenytoin, which is an anti-seizure drug. Some fertility blends also include some herbs which interact with the fertility drugs and cause problems.
Thus, folic acid can play a big role in ensuring that both men and women are able to increase their fertility levels. While they are found in most common foods, an extra dosage of folic acid on a regular basis can help in conceiving. It is recommended that you visit a doctor before going ahead with any extra dosage as too much of it can cause issues as well.

9 Ways to Keep Your Child Engaged during the Winter Holidays
Winter is here and kids, as usual, can’t wait for their winter vacation to begin, because honestly, a long break from books, coaching classes, and hours of studying is every child’s dream! Like every other parent, you too must have chalked out an entire plan to keep your child engaged this holiday season, and as usual, your well-thought plan must have gone out the window on day 2, right? Well, put an end to this hunt for fun things to keep your child engaged with these super easy and inexpensive ideas. You can thank us later!
9 Awesome Ideas for Keeping Kids Busy Over the Holidays
Kids tend to make a lot of plans before their holidays begin, and yet somehow, they get bored, and the onus of keeping them busy falls on you. Let’s face it; parents can’t always keep up with fussy toddlers curled up around their legs, constantly whining about having nothing to do. Well, here’s a bunch of cool stuff you can do to keep your child busy this holiday season.
1. Play Treasure Hunt Indoors
When it’s too cold for outdoor sports, an indoor treasure hunt is ideal to keep kids busy. Simply pick a spot at home (your child’s room preferably) and take the effort to hide tiny objects all around. Remember, the more the number of objects, the busier your child will be looking for them. When done, pen down a list of the objects that your child needs to look for. Use your creativity here to make small sketches or a list with images that will act as clues for your child to hunt. Hand over this list to your child and a bag to collect all his findings. Your child will have a blast looking for tiny things around the house, and this will surely buy you some alone time too.
2. Solve Creative Puzzles
Why stick to regular puzzles when you can make interesting ones of your own! We’re talking about old cereal boxes for this activity. All you need to do is cut out the front panel of a cereal box and further divide it into tiny squares. Give them to your child and let him put the pieces together until he constructs the front panel successfully. For larger images with more puzzle pieces, you can cut out pictures from newspapers and magazines as well. Explore your creativity and cut out pieces of different shapes and sizes. These will not only keep your child engaged, but will also turn out to be a great learning experience for him.
3. Consider Play Dates
If you’re looking at minimising your participation in keeping your child engaged, then play dates are the solution. Besides, kids love spending time with their friends when it doesn’t involve studying or going to school. You can easily set up a play date with your child’s friends; either invite them over or prep your child to spend a day at their place. All you need to do is leave the kids with books, crayons, snacks, and loads of other fun stuff, and they’ll be fine. Children are more active and energetic when they’re around kids their age; they learn quite a lot about sharing, and this helps develop their social skills. The benefit of play dates is that you can get all the ‘me-time’ you’re looking for!
4. Indulge in Baking
Baking is an excellent option to keep your child engaged during the winter holidays. And why not? Who doesn’t like baked goods on chilly days? Put on your chef hats and teach your child how to bake delicious treats. Be it hot, crispy cookies, tiny muffins or yummy cakes, you can have a great time giving your child some cooking lessons. Honestly, baking with kids is the best way to give them memories that they’ll possess for a lifetime. Besides, most children enjoy baking, and it sure is a fun activity to keep your child engaged. It’s the ideal activity to do with your child if you’re looking forward to spending some quality time with him.
5. Invest in an Activity Kit
Activity kits are specially designed to keep your child engaged all month-long, so that pretty much covers your child’s entire winter vacation. They come with a bunch of fun games that are super exciting, and that keep your child glued to one thing or the other at all times. You can try the FirstCry Intellikit, a fun activity kit that focuses on your child’s learning aspect while he plays. It is specially designed by experts to ensure that your child develops the right skills at the right age, all by having fun. It comes with eight activities, ten worksheets, a cute storybook, and loads of fun. It’s worth a shot!
6. Make Gardening a Hobby
Don’t let the cold weather come in the way of your child having some fun outdoors. Gardening is an excellent activity to keep your child engaged on a daily basis; plus, it’s the best way to ensure that your child gets some sun. You can quickly turn the tedious task of watering plants into something your child looks forward to. It’s simple - grow plants that bear flowers and fruits. Grab some empty pots, mud, and seeds and teach your child the basics of gardening. Keep these plants in a place where they’ll get plenty of sunlight and remind your child to water them every day. You’ll be surprised to see your little one’s enthusiasm as these tiny plants grow taller every day. This way, you’ll also get to teach your child a lesson or two about plants.
7. Play Rainbow Scavenger Hunt
The rainbow scavenger hunt is an exciting game that you can play both indoors & outdoors. It’s quite simple. On a sheet of paper, make seven circles and colour each with one of the colours of the rainbow. Then, write random numbers in the centre of each circle and ask your child to find that many objects of that particular colour. For instance, if you write ten on the red circle, your child has to go around the house and collect ten red objects. Fun, right? No doubt, a rainbow scavenger hunt will keep your child occupied for quite some time. It will also teach him about the colours of the rainbow and how to associate with numbers. Take our word on this one; your little one will have a blast.
8. Explore Quilling
You’ll be surprised to see the amount of fun a single packet of quilling paper, some child-friendly needles, and a bottle of glue can bring to the table. This papercraft activity is easy to master and is super fun. Get your child some easy lessons off YouTube and let him explore his creativity. Right from basic shapes to intricate designs, there’s nothing that the kids won’t love doing! Quilling is a beautiful craft (not to mention that it’s super addictive), which is why it’s perfect if you’re looking for cool stuff to keep your child busy this holiday season. And speaking of the holiday season, you can encourage your child to create beautiful designs on cards and envelopes using quilling paper, as handmade creations to gift loved ones during the festive season.
9. Give Creativity a Chance
If none of the above seems fit for your child, then the best thing you can do is to leave him with a big cardboard box, a carton full of crayons and some paint. Let your child use his creativity to make something out of the box - a car, an aquarium or abstract art. The important thing here is to give your child his space and let him unleash his inner artist. A big cardboard box will buy you enough time to focus on other things while your child will have a productive time trying to figure out what to do with the box. Remember to lay down a couple of newspapers or a messy mat, so that you don’t have to spend hours cleaning up after your child is done with his bit.
Every parent can relate to the fact that children get lethargic when they have nothing to do during their winter holidays. It’s best to keep some ideas up your sleeve so that you’re well-prepared when the moment arrives. So, now you have quite a few ideas to offer the next time your child comes walking towards you with a dull face and boredom in his eyes, right? Happy holidays!
