Top 10 Effective Home Remedies to Improve Digestion in Babies and Toddlers
Motherhood comes with its own challenges and worries and one of the most challenging things for a mother to deal with is her baby’s health. And if you're worried about indigestion in your baby or toddler, well, this article may prove to be fruitful as we shall be discussing some effective home remedies that help in improving digestion in babies and toddlers.
Home Remedies to Treat Indigestion in Babies and Toddlers
Young babies and toddlers do not have a fully developed digestion system, which makes them susceptible to digestion issues. If your baby is throwing up, has diarrhoea, constipation or other such tummy troubles, there are chances your baby may be suffering from indigestion issues. However, if you make use of any of the following home remedial measures, it may help in treating indigestion issues.
1. Warm Compression
Warm compression is a great way of getting rid of gas or bloating in babies and toddlers and it also helps in soothing and calming your little one. All you have to do it take a soft washcloth or towel and a bowl of warm water. Soak the towel in the warm water and wring to squeeze extra water. Gently place the warm towel over your baby’s belly for two to three minutes. You may do this a couple of times a day to help relieve the symptoms.
2. Burping Correctly
Your baby ingests a lot of air during breastfeeding or bottle feeding. The trapped air may lead to tummy aches, gas and bloating, which can make your baby extremely uncomfortable and uneasy. The best way to overcome this problem is to burp your baby often, especially after feeds. You can hold your baby in an upright position with your one hand supporting your baby’s back and the other supporting the neck. Alternatively, you can make your baby lie down on his tummy on your lap as you stroke his back.
3. Breast Milk
As discussed above, your baby has an immature digestive system and therefore, until six months of age, breast milk is ideal for your baby. Most doctors would suggest the newbie mommies to exclusively feed breastfeed their babies until they cross the six months threshold. When your baby feeds on breast milk, he is not only getting all the required nutrition but it is also adding immense benefits to your baby’s digestion.
4. Breastfeeding Position
Sometimes just making minor changes like feeding position may help your baby deal with acid reflux. If your baby suffers from constant or regular bouts of throwing up, chances are he may be suffering from acid reflux. You should hold your baby is an upright position while breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. This may prevent the stomach’s content to get thrown back to the oesophagus. Also, holding your baby in an upright position for at least half an hour may prove to be helpful to keep the acid reflux bouts at bay.
5. Yoghurt
Yoghurt contains good bacteria and probiotics which are beneficial for your little one’s digestive health. If your baby is suffering from diarrhoea, vomiting or constipation, giving yoghurt may prove to be helpful. Take a few spoons of yoghurt and dilute it by adding a few spoons of water. Feed this to your baby a few times a day or until he feels better. However, it is not recommended to give yoghurt to a baby who is less than six months of age. We recommend that you ask your doctor before giving yoghurt to your baby.
6. Massage
Massaging is a great way of strengthening your little one’s bones and muscles; however, it is also a great way of easing any digestion-related discomfort your baby may be facing. You can take any good baby massage oil and massage around your baby’s belly button area. Keep your strokes gentle and move your hands in a clockwise direction. It is also a great way of releasing any trapped gas in your baby’s tummy. You can also massage your baby’s legs by pressing them gently against his belly.
7. Bananas
Bananas are one of the best foods that you can give your munchkin to improve his digestion. Rather, banana is one of the first solid foods that your baby may begin eating because it is super easy on your baby’s digestive tract. Being rich in fibre, bananas work well in treating constipation in babies and if your baby is suffering from vomiting or diarrhoea, then eating a banana may prove to be beneficial for your baby’s gut health. However, do not give a banana to a baby if he is less than six months old.
8. Homemade Gripe Water
You can also make gripe water at home with ginger, chamomile and fennel seeds. Most doctors may not recommend giving store-bought gripe water to your baby but homemade gripe water is certainly a safer bet. This works both for younger as well as older babies.
9. Broccoli
Broccoli is great for your little one too. This green vegetable is loaded with fibre, folate, calcium, and anti-oxidants. Broccoli helps in reducing any kind of inflammation in your baby’s gastrointestinal tract. The ample amount of fibre in it is great for battling constipation. It also helps in improving gut health, nutrient absorption and your baby’s immunity. However, do not give large amounts of broccoli to your munchkin as it may lead to bloating, gas and other such issues in babies.
10. Fennel Oil
One of the most effective essential oils in battling digestion-related issues is fennel oil. You can take a few drops of this oil and mix it in your baby’s regular massage oil or other carrier oils like coconut oil and gently rub it around your baby’s belly area. It helps in soothing the pain and discomfort related to digestive issues.
These are some age-old home remedies that help in battling indigestion issues in babies and toddlers and may work for your little one too. However, if any of these do not work or your baby’s condition deteriorates further, seek medical help.

Zika Virus Infection in Children
Pregnancy is a joyful phase for moms because they're introducing a new life into the world. Unfortunately, illnesses and medical conditions can make the pregnancy a bit bumpy - Zika virus is one such problem as it directly affects the foetus. When an infant is born with the Zika virus, he exhibits a neurological medical condition known as microphelany, which loosely translates to the shrinkage of the baby's brain.
In this post, we'll be covering what the Zika virus is and how it affects infants during and after pregnancy.
What is Zika Virus?
The Yellow Fever Mosquito or the Aedes Mosquito is known to be a carrier of the Zika Virus, often being responsible for dengue, malaria, and other illnesses. When it bites a pregnant woman, the virus gets transmitted through her blood into the foetus. Zika Virus doesn't harm young children or kids after pregnancy, but for foetuses in the womb, it causes microcephaly.
Microcephaly basically shrinks the brain and causes neurological defects, making it difficult for the foetus to breathe and function normally. The U.S. Center's for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that mothers do not travel to tropical areas or countries that have Zika virus outbreaks.
Does Zika affect children? Yes, it does. Read on.
How Does It Spread?
There are three main ways the virus spreads - through intercourse, by being bitten by the Aedes mosquito directly, and via blood transfusions or organ transplants.
Men are known to be carriers of the virus, and it is advisable not to have unprotected sex until after a thorough screening. For those infected with the virus, condoms should be used for at least six months since the virus is known to spread through semen via oral, anal, and vaginal intercourse.
Of course, these aren't the only ways. Here are a few other ways the virus spreads:
1. Congenital
Congenital infections involve the foetus. This is when the virus infects the mother and reaches the foetus several weeks before delivery.
2. Postnatal
Postnatal Zika infections are caused when the mosquito lands on the infant and bites him. These infections are asymptomatic (show no clear symptoms/signs) in nature and require routine paediatric care. Its symptoms may be confused with Dengue, which is why giving children NSAIDs is not recommended, unless a thorough medical evaluation is done. Giving Aspirin to kids may also increase the risk of developing Reyes syndrome in cases of postnatal Zika infections.
3. Through Breast Milk
Zika Virus infections have been found in breast milk, according to studies. However, it is not clear if the infections in breast milk get transmitted to babies, which is why the CDC recommends and encourages mothers to not stop breastfeeding despite the presence of the virus in breast milk.
Where is Zika Virus Commonly Found?
The Zika Virus is commonly found in:
Tropical areas and countries like Africa and Asia
Countries like Brazil, French Polynesia, and territories in the Pacific
People who travel to areas of Zika outbreaks as listed by the CDC
The first case of the Zika virus originated in Uganda back in 1947 in monkeys. Humans exhibited this disease in 1952 in Uganda, and later on in the United Republic of Tanzania. In 2007, the Island of Yap reported a Zika Outbreak which was followed by another 2013 case in French Polynesia and areas in the Pacific.
Zika Virus Symptoms in Children
Common Zika symptoms in toddlers and children are:
Mild rash
Fever
Pain in the joints
Reddish eyes (with zero pus)
Aching muscles
Headaches
Conjunctivitis
How Does Zika Affect Children?
Here is a list of zika virus effects on babies and children-
It causes microcephaly in unborn kids or children inside the womb
Microcephaly deforms the brain and skull in babies which leads to developmental problems like impaired vision and auditory issues
For children who contract the virus after birth, they don't show any developmental problems or birth defects. However, they do get a mild fever, rashes, and other symptoms outlined in the previous section.
Does Zika Trigger the Risk of Guillain Barre Syndrome in Kids?
Studies show that countries experiencing ongoing outbreaks of Zika virus infections have witnessed a notable rise in Guillain Barre Syndrome incidences in patients. A causal link has been determined with the evidence available, and it is estimated that for every 10,000 Zika infections, at least two cases of Guillain Barre Syndrome occurs.
How Is Zika Infection Diagnosed?
Zika virus effects on babies and pregnant moms are diagnosed in the following ways:
1. Ultrasound Scans
Ultrasound scans reveal fetal abnormalities within 2 to 29 weeks from the onset of symptoms. Women between 18 to 22 weeks of gestation are recommended a comprehensive ultrasound scan.
2. Blood Tests
Zika infections are known to travel through the bloodstream, and blood tests reveal that.
3. Urine Analysis
Your doctor may recommend a urine analysis test besides a blood test for further evaluation and diagnosis.
How To Treat Zika Infection in A Child?
If your child is older (not inside the womb) and is infected, you don't have to worry. Zika symptoms in children are not too serious and go away in a few weeks Here are a few ways on how to treat the infection naturally-
Make sure your child gets plenty of bed rest and stays indoors.
Apply paramethrin or any EPA-approved insect repellent to your child's clothing before he goes outside.
Make sure your child stays hydrated.
Avoid medications like NSAID's and aspirins to your child.
Use acetaminophen to reduce fever and pain.
Prevention Tips
These prevention tips will keep you safe and protected when travelling. Be sure to apply them to prevent a case of a Zika virus baby-
1. Wear Long-Sleeved Clothing
Cover your arms and legs when wearing clothing to prevent a mosquito bite. Go for long-sleeved varieties and make sure the fabric is thick. Several companies are manufacturing mosquito-poof maternity clothing for women using special fabrics infused with natural mosquito repellents like Citronella. Spray EPA-approved insect repellents on your clothing like Permethrin when going outdoors.
2. Stay Indoors Often
If you're travelling to areas where there are Zika outbreaks, it's best to stay indoors to minimise your risk of exposure. Use an air-conditioner in the rooms and when sleeping at nights, opt for a thick mosquito bed-net to keep yourself protected.
3. Avoid Zika-infected Areas
Of course this is common sense, but not travelling to Zika-infected areas is a sure-fire way to keep yourself safe. According to the CDC, high-risk Zika-infected areas include Africa, Asia, Pacific Islands, Central America, South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
4. Don't Have Sex
If you suspect your partner to be a Zika virus carrier, abstain from intercourse or use condoms for at least six months. Get your partner screened and avoided oral, anal, and vaginal intercourse until you receive confirmation.
Zika doesn't have any vaccines or treatments available currently, so routine paediatric care is the recommended route for babies born with the Zika virus due to its long-lasting consequences. The best way to avoid your foetus from contracting Zika is to keep yourself protected and pay heed to the prevention tips outlined above in this article.

Lymphoma in Children - Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment
As a parent, it is normal to be concerned about the health and well-being of your child. Anything happens to your child and you start worrying. You don't want any harm to come to him, but that is not something you can control. There are many fatal conditions that may affect the health of a child, and one such condition is lymphoma. Know what exactly lymphoma is, what causes it and how to treat it.
What Is Lymphoma?
Before we discuss lymphoma, it is important to understand the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a part of the vascular system consisting of lymph vessels, nodes, ducts, and tissues. The lymphatic vessels carry a clear fluid known as lymph towards the heart. This fluid consists of infection-fighting white blood cells that include lymphocytes too. The lymphocytes are concentrated in the lymph system, which comprises of tonsils, bone marrow, spleen thymus, and lymph nodes (small organs in the chest, abdomen, groin, neck, and underarms).
The condition known as lymphoma occurs when lymphocytes multiply uncontrollably. This cause the enlargement of the lymph nodes that may infect other parts of the body too, including the nervous system and the bone marrow.
Types of Lymphoma
Lymphoma is further classified into two types:
1. Hodgkin's Lymphoma
This is a kind of cancer that occurs due to Reed-Sternberg cells. The cancer is further classified into various categories according to the severity of the condition and on the appearance of cells under the microscope. This cancer may usually affect children in their adolescent years. Though there are no specific reasons that may establish the onset of this fatal condition, it is believed that in almost 50 percent of the cases it may result from the Epstein-Barr virus or EBV.
2. Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL)
This kind of cancer may affect children of any age group, however, it is rarely registered in kids who are less than three years. This involves the malignant growth of special kinds of cells in the lymph nodes. This may further be classified into:
A high-grade tumour
This includes lymphoblastic lymphoma, Burkett lymphoma, and non-Burkett lymphoma.
An intermediate-grade tumour
This may include various kinds of tumours such as mantle cell lymphoma, follicular large-cell lymphoma, anaplastic Ki-1 large-cell lymphoma (CD30+), immunoblastic diffuse large cell lymphoma, and peripheral T-cell lymphoma.
What Causes Lymphoma in Kids?
Like most cancers, lymphoma is not contagious. It may affect children who have a weak immune system. Also, it is observed that lymphoma may not run in families, but there have been cases where genetics were involved, though these cases were extremely rare and it does not mean that the family members will have to get a screening done for cancer.
There are no known causes of lymphoma in children but there are many studies that are still going on to establish the real cause of this disease.
Risk Factors of Lymphoma in Children
The risk of lymphoma in children may increase under the following circumstances:
1. Hodgkin's Lymphoma
If your kid is on a medication that suppresses his immune system, then he might be susceptible to Hodgkin's lymphoma. If your kid has undergone an organ transplant and is on medication that affects his immune system, then he may get it.
If your child is born with a problem in his immune system such as ataxia telangiectasia, which is a genetic condition, he may get Hodgkin's lymphoma.
If your kid is infected with HIV or human immunodeficiency syndrome, it may increase his chances of having Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
2. Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
If your child has AIDS or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, it may lead to Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
If your kid has undergone an organ transplant.
If your child was born with problems with his immune system.
If your child has undergone treatment for some other kind of cancer.
Signs and Symptoms of Lymphoma
The most evident symptom of lymphoma is swollen lymph nodes or swollen lymph nodes on one side of a child's neck, which may also be visible around the underarm, groin, and neck. These are usually painless. But there are many other symptoms of lymphoma in children, which are as follows:
Breathing difficulty and coughing
Unexplained fever
Weight loss and loss of appetite
Swelling in the abdominal region
Night Sweats
How Is Lymphoma Diagnosed?
Here are some of the methods that your doctor may adopt to determine the symptoms of lymphoma in your child:
1. Physical Examination
Your doctor may examine your kid’s enlarged lymph nodes.
2. Blood Tests
Blood tests are done to check the blood count and to see if there are any conditions such as anaemia or low blood cells.
3. X-ray
This may be conducted to have a more comprehensive look inside the various structures inside the body.
4. MRI
This may be advised to see the detailed images of the enlarged lymph nodes.
5. Biopsy
This may be suggested to test the tissue from the enlarged gland.
6. CT scan
This involves taking three-dimensional pictures of the inside of the body to check for any tumours or other such abnormalities.
7. PET or PET-CT scan
This involves inserting radioactive sugar substance to produce more comprehensive images to detect any kind of abnormalities and tumours.
8. Bone Marrow Biopsy
This is an advanced stage test that requires testing tissue from the bone marrow.
Stages of Lymphoma in Children
Following are the different stages of lymphoma in children:
1. Stage 1
In the first stage cancer affects only one area of the lymph nodes.
2. Stage 2
In this stage, cancer affects one area and may start affecting two or more lymph nodes.
3. Stage 3
In this stage, cancer is present in the lymph nodes, below and above the diaphragm, in the chest, in the abdomen and sometimes in the spleen, too.
4. Stage 4
In the last stage, cancer spreads to the other parts of the body such as the liver, lungs, bones, brain etc.
Treatments Available for Lymphoma in Children
Here are some treatment options available for lymphoma:
1. Chemotherapy
One of the preferred options for the treatment of lymphoma is chemotherapy, which may help in stopping the growth of abnormal white blood cells and kill the lymphoma cells.
2. Radiation Therapy
If your kid responds well to chemotherapy, radiation may not be required. However, if your doctor feels the need, he may recommend radiation therapy along with chemotherapy.
3. Other Innovative Strategies
This may include medications that may directly target the tumours.
Side Effects of Lymphoma in a Child
Lymphoma may affect your child in more than one way, and following are some side effects that you may notice:
Chemotherapy may cause bleeding problems, increase the risk of infections, and even affect the bone marrow.
Short-term effects of lymphoma in children include a change of skin colour, loss of hair, vomiting, nausea, etc.
Long-term effects may include thyroid problems, reproductive problems, heart and kidney damage etc.
Chances of Recurrence of Lymphoma in Kids
In most cases of lymphoma, children recover and there are no relapses. However, if your kid has a serious case of lymphoma, then there are chances of reoccurrence.
Other Treatment Options Available After Recurrence of Lymphoma in Children
If there are relapses or recurrence of lymphoma in children, your doctor may recommend stem cell transplants and bone marrow transplants. Other than that there are other treatments available such as immune therapy, special kinds of medicines that deliver chemotherapy medicines etc.
If you register any symptoms of lymphoma in your child, it is suggested that you seek immediate medical assistance for the same. Timely medical intervention and treatment may help your child recover better and faster and may even prevent the infection from spreading.

A. Do consult your doctor as soon as you can. It's important to find the real reason because without that, proper medication is not possible.

A. usually fixed. better to show to specialist always as they get the correct diagnosis. try to avoid self and extra medication that will only complicate this and create more damage to the child

A. You should have started going from the very beginning itself once you get to know you’re pregnant but since you haven’t reached that now if you’re pregnancy has been healthy last five months please get it checked with your doctor also if you need to start with any supplements or diet the doctor would advise you after a ultrasound so please visit your gynaecologist
