12 Weeks Pregnant Ultrasound
When you are pregnant, every moment is fun and exciting. You are curious to know how your baby is developing. The pregnancy ultrasound at 12 weeks is the last ultrasound scan of the first trimester, and you will be excited to know about your baby's progress. This ultrasound scan will answer a lot of your questions about the baby’s health and well-being.
Why Do You Need an Ultrasound Scan at 12 Weeks?
Completing 12 weeks of pregnancy is an important milestone as it marks the completion of your first trimester, and your doctor may advise you to have an ultrasound scan to assess how your pregnancy is progressing. Here are a few things that your doctor will check in the 12 weeks ultrasound scan.
It helps to know the number of babies you are carrying, whether a single baby, twins or more.
It helps in establishing your baby’s gestational age by measuring the baby from crown to rump.
To check the foetal heartbeat.
To have a look at the baby’s arms, legs, chest, and head and assess if they are growing at a normal pace.
The doctor will check the foetal spine as well to check for any abnormalities.
To measure nuchal translucency, which is the fluid under the foetal skin at the back of the neck.
The assessment of nuchal translucency helps in establishing any risk of chromosomal abnormality.
It will help the doctor to establish the health and the position of the placenta.
How to Prepare for Your 12th Week Scan
You may be jittery and wonder what will happen during the scan. The first thing that you can do is to prepare yourself mentally for the scan. The cold and slimy gel may make you feel uncomfortable, but try to be calm and relaxed.
You will be required to drink at least a pint of water approximately an hour before the scan. The water pushes your uterus in a better position, and your doctor will be able to get a better view of the foetus. However, refrain from drinking too much water as it may put unnecessary pressure on your bladder, and you may want to pee.
How Long Does This Ultrasound Scan Take?
You will be made to lie down in a peaceful room with dim lights. The entire scanning process at 12 weeks of pregnancy may take 15 to 30 minutes approximately.
How Is the 12th Week Ultrasound Scan Performed?
The doctor will apply a gel on your abdominal region and move the transducer device on your tummy. A black and white image will appear on the screen, and you can ask your doctor to explain it to you. It is normal to feel some pressure on your abdominal region, but it is not painful.
If you are overweight or your womb is too deep in your pelvis, then your doctor may recommend a vaginal scan.
What Can Be Seen in the Scan?
The following things can be observed about your baby by performing 12 weeks ultrasound scan:
The position of the mother’s placenta.
Baby’s limbs and spine.
Presence or absence of the foetal nasal bone and its length.
Urinary bladder and stomach of the foetus.
The blood circulation around the mother’s uterus region.
Any foetal defects or abnormalities.
During the 12-week ultrasound, your doctor can also spot twins, which means if you are carrying more than one baby, the ultrasound scan will help your doctor determine the same.
Can Down Syndrome Be Accurately Detected in the 12th Week Ultrasound Scan?
Yes, if your baby is suffering from Down Syndrome, it can be detected in a 12-week ultrasound. If the baby has down syndrome, then there will be more accumulation of fluid at the nuchal fold, which is at the base of the baby’s neck. If your doctor suspects it, then the nuchal transparency test may be performed. Babies with Down Syndrome will have a thicker measurement in comparison to a healthy foetus.
What If Any Abnormalities Are Detected on the Scan?
The 12-week pregnancy scan may be your first scan to establish the foetal growth and development. However, this scan also helps your doctor to assess any foetal abnormality. In case your baby is detected with any defect or abnormality, then you may be referred to a foetal medicine consultant. The consultant assesses the diagnosis made by your doctor and may ask you to undergo further tests or scans to confirm the abnormality.
Is This Scan a Part of Pregnancy Care?
Ultrasound scans are a great way of assessing your baby’s growth and development. These scans are affordable, non-invasive, and low risk. They are essential as they give you and your doctor a lot of information about your baby and you can also get 12-week ultrasound pictures. However, it is entirely up to the parents to take a call whether they want to go in for 12-week ultrasound scan or not. Most hospitals will give you the pictures of your ultrasound scan, and some of them may even give you a video of the scan. You can check with your doctor if this service is available.
Some parents are of the opinion that ultrasound scans should not be done. The main reason for this is that they will be put in a difficult position of making a decision to continue or abort the pregnancy, in case any foetal defect or abnormality is established.
Things to Keep in Mind
When you're going for an ultrasound scan, remember to wear loose clothing so that it is easy for the doctor to access your belly.
Don't forget to drink water before the scan; a full bladder shifts the uterus making it more visible during the scan.
If you have any questions for your doctor, writing them down would be helpful.
If you want a picture of the scan, you can contact the hospital in advance to ask if this service is provided.
Ask your doctor what kind of help is available in terms of prenatal classes or in case of an emergency. This can help you prepare for your baby's birth and put your mind at ease.

8. Sunlight
Taking your baby out for about 20 minutes in the sun can be hugely beneficial, the natural UV rays of the sun contain Vitamin D, this helps the skin absorb cholesterol through the skin and provides melanin, this also soothes your baby’s skin and heals the skin. Beware though, if the sun is too harsh it could have adverse effects instead. Ensure your baby doesn’t spend over 20 minutes in the sun with no sunscreen on.
9. Use Humidifiers
Humidity is good for the skin, it hydrates the body, reduces inflammation and helps alleviate itchiness. Use a humidifier in the room that your baby occupies regularly to help manage eczema, ensure you combine this with the use of moisturisers.
10. Loose Clothes
Ensure your baby is dressed in loose clothes and make sure they wear breathable material, tight clothing can cause sweating and spread the bacteria that causes eczema; it also reacts to the rashes on the skin causing itchiness, makes sure they are wearing comfortable clothes that don’t hug the skin too tightly.
Eczema can be caused due to food allergies, if you are breastfeeding your child, ensure you test your baby for food allergies and do not eat those foods. It is also recommended that you pat the eczema rashes on your baby’s body with a cool, wet gauze at least twice a day, this will help soothe their skin.
The best way to approach managing this condition is by combining treatment methods, by taking your child out for 15 minutes in the sun, giving them an eczema treatment bath like the ones mentioned above and using natural moisturizers like cold pressed coconut oil as well as using a humidifier and dressing them up with comfortable loose clothing on a regular basis, you can manage the condition much more efficiently. Additionally, ensure that the room your baby spends the time it is cool, the use of air conditioners and ceiling fans during the summer can help reduce skin irritation due to sweat.
Eczema can also be caused by external allergies like dust mites, ensure you keep your child in a clean environment and make sure they bathe regularly. Never use a towel to wipe your child if they have this condition, it is recommended that you pat them dry or let them air dry, wiping them with a towel could spread the bacteria and increase the likelihood of these rashes manifesting in other locations.
Remember, it is also important to understand that these techniques are only to help manage and heal minor forms of eczema, it is still recommended that you get medical advice for the condition and follow the instructions of your medical care specialist. These techniques can be added to their advice but should not be used without the instructions of your doctors.

Why Does It take Longer to Get Pregnant?
There are many reasons for delayed pregnancy with a couple. The cause may be due to the female or male partner. The following reasons are attributed to the female partner:
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): This is a condition where there is growth of cysts along with enlarged ovaries. Women with this condition produce high levels of androgen that interfere with the body’s ability to produce a healthy egg.
Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR): Some women’s reserve of eggs diminishes more rapidly than others and find it harder to conceive.
Improper functioning of the hypothalamus or pituitary gland. These glands are responsible for the optimum conditions for conceiving.
Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI): Some women’s ovaries fail before they turn 40. This condition is known as early menopause.

Varicoceles: This condition is where the testes overheat due to their large size which affects the number and health of the sperm produced.
Trauma to the testes can result in a lowering of the sperm count.
Certain medications and/or supplements can reduce the sperm count in men such as heart medication, steroids and antidepressants.
Cancer treatments can affect the ability of the testes to produce healthy sperm.
Improper functioning of the hypothalamus or the pituitary gland which are responsible for producing hormones that ensure that the sperm produces ins healthy and viable.
Benign or malignant tumours in the male reproductive system.
Pre-existing genetic conditions may also be a cause for male infertility.

There are many ways in which your doctor will recommend treating infertility in both partners. A combination of medications that regulate hormones, procedures to correct any pre- existing conditions and lifestyle changes to enable fertility will be pursued by your doctor.
You must discuss the same with your doctor and explore the different options available and choose a plan that suits both you and your partners needs best. A shift in lifestyle may prove to be more difficult than you might think.

Have regular unprotected sex, at least 2 to 3 times a week.
Keep track of your menstrual cycle to ensure that you have sex when you are ovulating.
Keeping you and your partner stress free can be the key to getting pregnant as stress can affect the ovulation cycle in women and lower testosterone levels in men.

Why We Should Bother to Mind Our Language Around Children
For most children, especially toddlers, parents' words are as good as the universal truth. Although, many times, parents may not realise that during an ongoing and unbearable tantrum, their child registers every word that their parent utters; intentionally and unintentionally. Not only those addressed to the child, but also those that are spoken around her. The power of parents' words over their children is often underestimated. That said, I make a conscious effort not to say, in fact, even mean the following things in front of my daughters :
1. "That person is 'ugly/ mean/ strange..."
As human beings, we never miss an opportunity to attach adjectives to people, known and unknown alike. But little do we realise that such words become lens through which our children see those people or those kind of people. In the long run, it might lead to their unwillingness or failure to analyse why 'good' people may behave 'badly' in some situations. They might develop a bias towards those around them, sometimes even close family members, as a result of our opinions. As difficult as it may sound, my hubby and I make it a point not to use any 'bad labels' while talking about other people when kids are around. In fact, better to not discuss people at all; with them and around them.
2. "You cannot do this.."
All of us have limitations, of course. Physical, mental or emotional. Parents are the best identifiers of limitations in their children, which is an obvious cause of concern for them. No problem so far, because limitations can be overcome. But not when we make it a point to constantly remind little ones about it out of our own worries and fears. I try my best to replace 'You cannot do.. ' with 'Lets try it this way..' when I intend caution or 'The other thing also looks interesting' when I think the act is out of reach for the time being.
3. "Your sister/brother is better than you in.."
Many times, the cause of sibling rivalry lies with the way parents treat their children when they are with their siblings and when they are on their own. Quoting examples of their sister or brother to inculcate good habits in a child is an inevitable and also effective way. But going overboard with it might lead to issues amongst them. I ask my younger one to brush her teeth or finish her vegetables like her big sister does. But I refrain from commenting on their individual traits and preferences that are a part of their different personalities to avoid any kind of comparison on that front.
4. "Would you do it for me when I am old like Grandma.."
Our children are not to be brought up as caregivers for old age. I simply do not agree with those who build expectations about children being responsible for their parents at some point in life. If it has been done right all along, they would be around whenever parents need them without any favours asked or given. To mentally burden them, at any age, is just not my way.
5. "I want you to become a doctor/ engineer/ dancer/ puppet!"
Bringing a person into the world certainly bestows on us the responsibility of making him or her self sufficient. But in no way does it grant us the authority to dictate what meaning they desire to add to their lives. Of course, parents' mentorship is indispensable, but it should not be an imposition.
Most of the time, children are like their favourite toy, moulding clay. Every word we speak to them shapes them in a different manner altogether. Moreover, children are like under cover agents who always overhear adults even though they pretend they do not. Hence, every word we s

peak around them, too, has influences we do not even realise. I believe a very big challenge that appears before every person after becoming a parent is to mind his or her words because someone in the house is always listening!
