Teach Your Kids The Power of Non Violence
Mahatma Gandhi's best known teaching is that of non-violence or “ahinsa”. In fact, his birthday or Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 is internationally celebrated as the International Day of Non Violence. As a mom, it is important to teach your kids peace and nonviolence so that they grow up as amiable, happy adults!
The reasons to teach kids about non violence are plenty – especially in this age of turmoil, crime and hatred! Children are highly responsive to external stimuli and everything from an encounter with a neighborhood bully to a violent video game can trigger confusing emotions in them. It is up to you to impart non violence education for kids as a responsible mom.
4 Innovative Ideas for Raising a Non Violent Child
1. You Grow Up When You Forgive
Kids always want to grow up fast and do what Mummy and Daddy do – watch TV, stay up late, et al. Tell them that forgiveness is the mature thing to do when someone says sorry. The school kid who stole his tiffin-box says “I am sorry”? Teach your child to say “It's okay” instead of picking up a fight. Forgiving and moving on is the adult thing to do1!
2. Violence is Noisy and Ugly
To raise non-violent children, it is crucial to maintain a peaceful environment at home. Try to avoid these fighting or having loud arguments in front of the children. When kids are exposed to violent television programming or news stories, use them as an opportunity to showcase just how ugly violence is. The point is not to keep your kids oblivious to the reality of life but teach them that they have the power to live peacefully. Avoid violence-inducing toys such as guns at all costs!
3. Peace Can Win You Brownie Points
No, we don't suggest material rewards! What you must do is expose your kids to situations and conversations where they need to decide between two courses of action – violence vs. non-violence. It could be dealing with the classmate who falsely complained to the class teacher, or the street dog who made a mess in the courtyard. Compliment them when they choose interesting, peaceful solutions such as discussion, conversation and innovation.
4. Smart Kids Use Only Non-Violent Solutions for Problems
Children love feeling responsible and grown-up. Reinforce the point that they must find non-violent resolutions to everyday situations. Slapping, kicking and shouting is what everyone can do! If they are smart, they must find clever workarounds to problems. And this applies to requesting Mamma to stay up late as well. Throwing a violent tantrum is not what smart kids should do!
Finally, remember that you have to lead by example. You are your child's role model; you are the super mom and you can't do anything wrong! Try to maintain peace at home – from your family interactions to workplace stress to disciplining kids – and your little ones will learn from you every day! Read more

Simple Yet Effective Ways to Make Toddlers Eat Healthy and Nutritious Foods
As a mother to a super active daughter, the foremost concern was to ensure a daily nutritious diet for her to gain healthy weight. From the day we introduced solid food to her, I started giving her fresh, home-cooked meals with nutritional varieties. Though ready-to-eat foods were also kept as a backup to bring some change in the palate, thankfully, she never preferred the taste and resisted them every time I tried to feed.
Your kid must develop healthy eating habits from the beginning as they will be carried forward for a longer time in their growing years. Sometimes due to unforeseen and unavoidable reasons, preparing a fresh meal can take a back seat. But during that phase, too, I pushed myself to make something quick. Like most toddlers, my little one was also not very fond of eating vegetables; however, I made sure she consumed them in the form of fresh juices and soups. Until now, I have ensured adding seasonal fruits and vegetables in different forms to her regular diet.
Raising a child with good food habits can be a mammoth task, but this can easily be achieved if we try to inculcate the following practices.
Try not to force-feed the baby as it might act as a booster for resistance to food
Make eating a fun time. Keep talking and playing with the baby to make this time interesting for them.
Do not run around while feeding. Sit at the dining table or a quieter place with a minimum distraction.
Initially, include all types of vegetables and fruits in the diet as it will help you find out their favorite foods, along with the ones they do not prefer. Try different cooking methods and recipes to prepare the dishes to make them more interesting for your child.
Do not give up if the child resists one food initially. Take a break and add the same item again in their meals after a few days. Their taste buds keep changing as they grow up.
Never compare your child’s development milestones with that of other children. Every baby is different, and comparing would mean stressing yourself and putting pressure on the child.
As long as possible, avoid giving sweets and packaged foods. After a certain age, it won’t be easy to control them from eating junk, therefore keep them as treats only once a week/month, even then after they turn two years of age.
Politely make the relatives or the visitors understand not to directly give packaged foods (chocolates, chips, candies, etc.) to them as they quickly become smart enough to know how and from whom to extort junk foods.
After a year of introducing solid foods, try to eat as a family together to exhibit the importance of family time, and the child will develop a habit of smart eating.
Kids follow their parents a lot. Therefore, make sure you too eat healthy food and snacks.
Involve your kids in grocery shopping and preparing food at home to build their interest and involvement.
Intake of adequate nutrition from childhood is critical not only for physical growth but also for mental development. Acquiring healthy eating habits is directly proportional to a long and wholesome life.

Neonatal Meningitis - Every Parent's Deadly Nightmare!
Every parent wants to have a healthy child. But sometimes, it's challenging.
It all started on the 16th day of my baby's birth. The baby was feeding fine but was very irritable and restless. Also as it was my birthday, we thought of taking our baby outside to celebrate. We went to a 5-star hotel for lunch and then returned home. He was fine during the night and the next day morning. He felt a little warm so I checked his temperature. It was 100 degrees, so I panicked. I called my husband and by the time he reached home, my baby's temperature had come to normal. So I felt relieved.
That night, when my baby woke up to feed, he felt burning hot and when I checked his temperature, it was 101. Trembling, I woke my husband up. He checked and it was 102. The temperature had already increased by a minute.
We rushed to the hospital immediately; the doctor checked his vitals and took his blood samples. He was admitted to the NICU at once. The next day, blood reports confirmed an infection ☹️. It was sepsis. The doctor decided to perform a lumbar puncture within 2 days. We gave our consent and waited for it to be negative but alas, our worst nightmare! It was positive. Our son had contracted bacterial meningitis, which is an infection of the outer brain. I was in despair and had lost every reason to live. As a mother, only I was allowed to visit him inside the NICU. When I saw him, I was devastated. I started crying hysterically thinking I had not taken proper care and blaming myself all the time.
He lay there, his tiny body fitted with all instruments to check heart rate, oxygen, bp. Milk was being given through a pipe inserted into his mouth. My heart ached to see him like that. He was on a 21-day antibiotic course, which was given intravenously. It was a painful affair as his veins would get blocked every 2 or 3 days and a new cannula had to be put on his tiny hands and legs. He had lost weight and looked miserable.
After 2 weeks of medication, when I visited him in the NICU, I started talking to him and he responded, gave a smile! That moment was nostalgic! I had tears of joy and happiness that he was recovering. He still remembered me, his mother!
The doctor said he was responding quite well to the antibiotics and the blood reports showed no signs of growth in the bacteria. We heaved a sigh of relief and thanked God for his blessings on my baby.
He is now healthy and has put on weight, with no side effects of meningitis and all his milestones are up-to-date. He laughs and is very active all the time, thanks to the timely medication and proper care of the doctors.
Just a word of advice to all parents, Don't take your baby out for the initial few months as their immunity is very low. Not all get infected but if they do, it could cost their lives. Look out for meningitis symptoms and if the baby has a fever, rush to the doctor immediately.
Keep your baby indoors in a sanitised atmosphere and be carefree. ?
