What Does Tail Wagging in Dog Language Mean?
The popular notion is that when a dog wags his tails, it implies a happy and friendly dog. Most people comprehend the wagging tail of a dog as an invitation to approach. But this may not be exactly true. On a lighter note, it may mean lots of fur in your face or a broken vase tossed on the floor by a rapid swing of the tail. On a more serious note, it can also mean fear, anxiety, insecurity or even a caution of being bitten if approached. So misreading the canine tail can get you a bite.
Dogs use their tails as communication devices. In many ways, tail wagging may serve a similar communication purpose as a human grin or smile, a nod of appreciation or a polite greeting. As is the case with other languages, tail wagging consists of grammar and vocabulary that entails some understanding. Careful note of their tail's motion and position may disclose their feelings. The path of the tail wag may divulge plenty about a dog’s mood. Some emotional signs can be quite subtle. Dogs can use the same gesture of a wagging tail to convey different things all depending on the situation. For example, a growling dog can seem hostile. But if it is simultaneously wagging his tail too, it can simply mean he intends to play. Therefore, it is important to read the whole range of signals, together perhaps from the nose to the tail to know what exactly a dog is trying to say.
It is interesting to mention that when a dog is on his own, it may not indulge in its usual tail wags the same way humans don’t converse with walls. Thus in all probability, dogs will only wag their tail when a living being is around - a person, a cat, another dog or maybe a seemingly alive lint ball blown away by the breeze.
Common Types of Tail Wagging in Dogs
The way human language has many dialects, tail wagging the dog can have various inferences too. Diverse breeds hold their tails at varying heights from the nearly vertical stance common to Terriers and Beagles, to the low-lying tails of Whippets and Greyhounds. It is essential to read all tail positions respect to the standard position a respective dog breed normally carries. Movements and sounds provide further meaning to the signs. For example, people may want to know why dogs wag their tails when barking. The speed of the tail wag and barking may show the level of a dog’s excitement. And the expanse of every tail sweep may specify if the dog’s emotive state is negative or positive irrespective of the excitement level. Some common types of tail wagging in dogs may include the following:
1. A Slight Wag
This is generally a positive signal.
Meaning
A small wave of the tail with each sweep of not much breadth may suggest a greeting or hopefulness on the dog’s part.
2. A Broad Wag
Many people may wonder why dogs wag their tails when they are happy. A broad wag mainly is the happiness wag particularly if the tail happens to drag the hips along as well.
Meaning
It indicates that the dog is pleased, happy and approachable and not in a challenging or threatening mode.
3. A Slow Wag
Slow wags with the tail held at half-mast are considered a less social gesture in comparison to other tail signals.
Meaning
A slow and measured wag with the tail neither singularly high nor a meek and submissive low is thought to be a sign of insecurity.
4. High-speed Wags
This kind of wag infers that the dog is most likely up to something. An unfriendly dog may hold its tail high habitually arching it over the back with only the tail end shaking swiftly back and forth.
Meaning
Rapid and tiny motions of the tail almost like the tail is vibrating are typically signs that the dog is going to run or fight. In case the tail is placed tall while vibrating, it is possibly an active threat.
5. Tight Sharp Arc Wags
Confident dogs every so often put their tails high wagging them fast in constricted sharp arcs.
Meaning
Such a kind of wag displays that the dog is assured and possesses self-confidence. It illustrates the dog’s equal or high standing comparative to a person or another animal.
6. Low and Loose Wide Arc Wags
This is a good-natured action.
Meaning
A tail held low wagging slackly making a wide arc often including hip wags too expresses a dog’s low positioning in relation with another animal or human.
7. Tail Wags Towards the Right/Left
The direction of the tail wagging can also have considerable significance.
Meaning
According to recent research, when dogs feel positive about a person or something, their tails tend to wag more towards the right end of their butt. On the other hand, A negative frame of mind may prompt tail wags more to the left.
8. Low Horizontal Tail
At times dogs can convey their feelings without wagging the tail.
Meaning
A dog’s tail in a low spot or tucked between the legs designates submission or fear. It can be corresponding to a human hiding his face as the tail conceals the genitals and restricts the sniffing behaviour with which dogs identify each other.
9. A Tall, Stiff, Not Wagging Tail
This type of tail position may not necessarily comprise of aggressive vocal and facial expressions like growls and snarls.
Meaning
A rigid, high-held tail usually gestures an imminent attack by the dog. It is a challenging behaviour which may signal supremacy. Many dominant dogs routinely use very refined warnings or at times none before they bite or launch an attack.
10. Tail Wags in Circular Motion
A circle wag is also known as the helicopter wag wherein the tail constantly moves in a circle.
Meaning
A dog's tail wagging in a circular motion intimates that it is excited perhaps at feeding time or upon seeing someone it loves or wants to engage in play.
There may be a lot of meaning veiled in a dog’s butt than one can expect. At times there is a full conversation taking place back there. And tail wagging doesn’t always mean a welcome-home salutation. Thus, make yourself and your kids aware of the many facets of a dog’s wags for a rewarding relationship together. In nearly all instances, dogs tell you that whether it desires caressing or fears you or cautions you to stay at a distance. If in any doubt, it may bear well to leave a dog alone for the sake of safety.

World Breastfeeding Week - History and Significance
The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) organises the annual event of World Breastfeeding Week from August 1st to August 7th. The idea behind organising such an event was solely to promote, support, and encourage breastfeeding amongst new mothers throughout the world.
Why Is World Breastfeeding Week Celebrated?
This event is celebrated every year to protect, promote, support and encourage breastfeeding mothers everywhere across the globe. World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated for the first time during the year 1992, and since that time, it has been recognised by organisations and institutions worldwide. The WABA had decided to dedicate an entire week to increase the awareness and spread more information about breastfeeding to communities worldwide, which gave birth to the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW).
History of World Breastfeeding Week
The importance of breastfeeding was globally recognised back in 1990, when the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) created a memorandum known as the Innocenti Declaration, to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. The Innocenti Declaration is a formal document that was created to achieve goals including:
Creating a national breastfeeding committee and also appointing a national breastfeeding coordinator across countries.
Facilitating the provision of maternity care practice and taking measures to ensure that women are adequately nourished to feed their child and remain healthy themselves.
Formulating and enforcing of laws that will protect the breastfeeding rights of women.
Formulating an act to implement all the articles of the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes and WHO resolutions.
Enabling women to exclusively breastfeed their babies up until 4-6 months of age.
The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was formed in the year 1991 to execute all the goals outlined in the Innocenti Declaration. WABA is responsible for spreading the awareness and importance of breastfeeding at a global level. Some of the important initiatives of WABA include:
Supporting and encouraging mothers to continue to breastfeed
Baby-friendly hospital initiatives
Guiding and educating the fathers to support the mothers, health care workers, and the community
Framing of laws and policies to protect and support breastfeeding mothers
How to Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week
The World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) celebrations are meant to unite the breastfeeding community all around the world, enhance public support towards breastfeeding, and achieving the goals of the Innocenti Declaration. In the first year of its celebration, around 70 countries were involved in the celebration of WBW, but today this number has grown to 170 countries! There are many ways to celebrate the WBW; you can do any one or more of the following things.
1. Breastfeed Your Little One
The best way to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week is, of course, by starting to feed and nourish your little one! While we all know a mother is always there to feed her baby irrelevant of any dates or celebrations, if you are in that phase of your life where you're nursing your baby, then you must definitely do so with gusto during this week!
2. Attend Events, Lectures or Walks Sponsored by Various Agencies
Many institutions sponsor walks, seminars, etc. to create awareness during WBW. They provide tees with logos, bracelets, etc., to show their support towards the cause.
3. Go for a Breastfeeding Vacation
Take some time off from your routine life and go on a vacation with your family. Enjoy the bliss of nursing your baby during this time, without being bogged down by the tasks and worries you deal with daily. Take some time to unwind and relax, indulge in yoga, meditation or any activity that rejuvenates your mind, body and soul. And while planning for the vacation, make sure to include 'shop for the perfect bra' in your to-do list, as the right bra can definitely help maintain the health of your breasts, especially during this crucial time.
4. Post Your ‘Brelfie’
A trend started by the World Health Organisation (WHO) encourages moms to share their breastfeeding selfies or 'brelfies' on social media. It was a move to break the stigma regarding breastfeeding in public and also to spread the importance of breastfeeding for the physical and mental development of the child. So when World Breastfeeding Week rolls around, you too can post your brelfie on Instagram with the hashtag #BraveBrelfie to share your experience with WHO.
5. Share Your Breastfeeding Experience
Breastfeeding is a natural phenomenon, and your experience with your baby is something which you must share with nursing mothers or expecting mothers. In spite of so many efforts to spread awareness regarding the importance of mother’s milk, only 50% of the population of babies are being nursed beyond six months of age, and only half of them make it to one year of age. In many underdeveloped countries, mothers are not given any support when it comes to them nursing their babies; there may be issues and problems they're facing that they don't have information about. The more you talk about your experiences, the more you can reach out to such people and help them throughout their journey of motherhood.
6. Say Thanks to a Nursing Mom
Take this as an opportunity to say thanks to a nursing mother or a nursing caretaker whom you know. A small word of appreciation and a smile can create a big difference in the lives of many people. If you are one of them, then just take a moment to appreciate yourself for the wonderful gift you're giving your baby!
Themes of World Breastfeeding Week
The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action designs a new theme and slogan to represent the World Breastfeeding Week every year. They are specially designed to focus on a particular aspect of breastfeeding. After finalising the theme, the marketing materials such as brochures, posters, banners, advertisements, and websites are designed by the WABA to spread the topic of the year.
These themes, slogans, and materials can be used by government organisations, breastfeeding communities, hospitals, healthcare institutes, pharmaceuticals and other organisations to host seminars, events, lectures and spread awareness about breastfeeding locally and internationally. Some of the past themes of WBW include:
Breastfeeding - It's Your Right
Breastfeeding in the Information Age
Breastfeeding - Education for Life
Breastfeeding - Nature's Way
Breastfeeding - a Vital Emergency Response
Mother-Friendly Workplace Initiative (MFWI)
Discussing breastfeeding in public, and spreading awareness about it is still considered a taboo subject in many places in India. However, as educated individuals, we must come forward and work towards removing the social stigma surrounding this topic. As an enlightened and responsible citizen, your participation in local celebration and events will make a significant difference.

Your Maasi Loves You
I am not this little one's parent, but I am her Maasi. My baby has grown up, and now she has turned one this year. Earlier I used to hate children, but when I saw her first, I fell in love with her and till now I am madly in love with her.
Once she was crawling, and we all were watching Jhingaat dance, and suddenly she stood up and tried to dance. We all were surprised. It was such a happy moment for all of us. I witnessed her first steps as well.
Once she had a midnight stomachache, and she was crying uncontrollably, and we all wanted to know what happened but the baby was in miserable pain, and only the doctor could understand what was bothering her. We all were trying to pose like a cartoon to make her happy, and we played her poems, my whole family became joker in front of her, but my baby was in pain, and we felt helpless.
Once I was eating chocolate, and she came to me and said 'mummmummm', and I just made her lick that chocolate and she was so happy. It's a delight to watch her, observe her. Sometimes I play with her by giving her lemon and record her expression. She is so cute and beautiful that I can't stop myself from writing this. Hope you relate to this experience with your children.
P. S: I am fortunate to see my baby growing. I want to request all parents who are working that please take out some time for your child. I'm sure you won't be disappointed, and you won't regret it. You will love watching them. They won't be that cute as they are in their childhood. Please, parents, ek bar fir se sab kuch bhul kar bache ban jaoo!

Worried About Milk Insufficiency? Don't Doubt Yourself
As new mothers, it's normal for us to doubt our ability on anything to do with the baby, whether it comes to parenting choices or taking care of the little one. I too have had my moments of self-doubt. Here's my story.
One day, my parents went out somewhere, and I was alone at home with my 14 year old baby. This was the first time since my delivery that I had to take full responsibility of my baby, with nobody around to guide me. I breastfed my baby, after which he quickly fell fast asleep. Seeing this, I felt incredibly happy, thinking 'Yes! I can do this easily.' However, he woke up after just 15 minutes and started crying. I fed him again, but this time he wouldn't go to sleep. No matter what I tried, he just wasn't sleeping and I had no idea how to make him sleep. He just kept latching on my nipple for two-three hours. When my mom came, she asked me whether the baby had slept or not, and I told her what had been happening all this while, and that the baby had just been sucking my nipple and refusing to fall asleep. Immediately, my mom made some formula and fed him, after which he slept peacefully. I was stunned and disappointed in myself. I even started cursing myself about the kind of a mother I was.
Later, I went to the doctor and asked him for advice on starting with formula. He told me that you I shouldn't think like this and that mother's milk should be given to the baby for six months. He also assured me that my milk was sufficient and I should trust myself and just take care of my diet. Sometimes, babies want their mother around and latching is the only thing that does the trick for them, as that what they did in the womb.
Today, my baby is four months old and I am breastfeeding perfectly. When some of my relatives notice my baby being cranky or not sleeping well, they say he's hungry and if my milk is not sufficient, to feed him formula, and so on. However, I know that every baby is different, and so is mine. I know his needs. On my latest visit to the clinic, the paediatrician even gave me a pat on the back for taking good care of my baby. After all, only you know what's best for your baby, so trust yourself.

Is Your House Sparkling This Diwali?
Ready-Steady-Diwali! Yes, the mega-festival filled with love, light and so much mithai is upon us again. As if you're not already busy cleaning the house and renovating the fixtures - we must remind you that you're also going to have to make your abode shine and sparkle. What with managing the guests, the food and the kids (!), decor seems a bit of a hassle, no? Nay! These diwali decoration tips and ideas for home will be half the effort, and double the aesthetics. Your sparkling home will garner good vibes to spread all the luck and love on the auspicious day. Read on and work your magic!
Glittering Home Decor Ideas for Diwali
1. The Basics: De-Clutter and Organize
When you go on an organizing spree in your home, it can turn out to be quite an adventure. In the end, you'll always have a treasure trove - your mom's old sarees, a vintage vase you forgot you owned, or a churidaar you thought was misplaced. The possibilities are endless! The cleaning helps create more space, so don't forget that you're doing this to throw out trash and not make excuses for its future use. The extra space will come in handy with guests and the kids running around the house on Diwali. What's more, this will even let you keep the kids busy and out of trouble this Diwali!
2. Re-arrange
One of the best diwali interior decoration ideas is to change-up things a little. A neglected corner in your living room occupied by an old table can become the new focus with the help of showpieces, or even flowers. This will bring a brand new feel to the place. What if you swapped your dining table with nice low-seating mats or takhts? It will give the house a more royal feel and if you were going to spend on new furniture anyway, this might be a good start.
3. Art
Who says you have to buy expensive art pieces to make your walls come alive? Just get quirky paints, choose a focus wall considering the lighting and view of the room, hold the brush and get started - it'll give you an immense sense of accomplishment just to see that you made the room more lively, not to mention how much you get to brag about it! Think that might be too bold for your taste? Get a canvas instead, and be creative. Abstract art is timeless!
4. Flowers and Fragrance
Natural flowers will make your house colourful, bright and happy. Use them for making bright rangolis at the entrance or in the centre of the puja-room. They'll be much easier to maintain than the powder ones. Plus, the sight of flowers being illuminated by diyas on the big night is purely beautiful! Keep your house smelling fresh by using, aroma diffusers, incense, and scented candles.
5. Lights
Let's not under-estimate the effects of mood-lighting! To really send your family and guests into a festive fervour, include bright and festive lights for diwali decoration. If you've been using white lights in your house, try going for white-yellow tinted ones for an ethereal pale glow all around. Another great way of jazzing up your house is to not use any light and instead, spend that money on buying pretty lanterns and tiny lamps that will give the place a rustic feel. You can also use some great DIY ideas available online to create your own lamps and other diwali decoration items for home.
This four pronged approach to home decor won't burn a hole in your pocket, or your time schedule! You'll be good to go even if you start just two days before the big day. Remember, beauty and cheer garners good luck and Goddess Laxmi's blessings for your family and friends. So happy home-making ladies, with these tips for diwali decoration in home you can't go wrong now!

Make your Home Double Up as a Cool Teen Hangout
Do you know how to make your home a teen favorite hangout? If you have a carefree environment, your kiddo’s friends will soon become frequent visitors. So, say hello to food bills and loud chatter these teen guests bring in. You'll enjoy the energy!
Are you keen to make your abode the go-to hangout or hotspot for kids? Little wonder then that you keep encouraging your kids to invite their friends over and for pajama parties too! You're not too worried about the little expenses, dirt, noise and other irritants these teens bring in—right? Along with having fun yourself, you know exactly what your children (and their friends) are up to, and that they are safe. Wow!
Ways to Make your Home a Teen-Friendly Hangout
1. Encourage Teen Meets
Your home looks like it got hit by a hurricane after the kids leave, yet you keep hosting them. Why? Because when you make your home a hangout for your kids, you get to know the sort of friends your children are hanging out with. Next, you know that instead of running into tricky situations elsewhere, they are chalking out party plans in the basement. But you do need to set some limits when it comes to say, drinking alcohol.
2. How Many Teens are Enough?
Well, there are no set rules when it comes to the number of teens permitted within your zone at any given point of time. You probably know by now that "just a few friends" may mean half your kid's class too! Discuss your space and time restraints with your children before they send out invites. Figure out the time other moms impose a curfew for teens. You may like a quiet home on weekends. If yes, feel free to say so. Relax, you'll still be much loved for making your home accessible on other days!
3. Spot The Teen Areas at Home
Demarcate areas where your teenage child and his friends can ideally hang out without hindrance. Consider furnishing an outhouse, a spare room, or even your child's room with comfy and casual seating, a TV, and music system for company. Rooms with closed doors are obviously a “no-no” for all teenage visitors. All kids must know that they need to adopt an open door policy. Post such a check, you'll have your own reasons for those intermittent casual walk-bys.
4. Be Their Friend!
One of the best ways of bringing teens in is by having a larder stocked with fun foods, beverages, and crunchy snacks. Be friendly and keep your apprehensions at bay when you have the bunch over. Crack a joke to create an amicable and open environment. You could also invest in gear and games like Xbox, skateboards, or a pool table. Of course, in this day and age of Internet, a Wi-Fi connection is a must too.
With these effective and teenage friendly tips in your parenting arsenal, you're sure to keep your child and his crew happy. Once you have things under control, enjoy the fruits of your labour and how! Read more
