Chickenpox (Varicella) Vaccine for Babies
Despite the worries we have when a baby gets the chickenpox, modern medicine has ensured that this disease will not cause any long-term harm. It is, however, a disease associated with a lot of inconveniences and unpleasant symptoms for the affected. Keep yourself up to date with the disease symptoms and why you should ensure that your child gets the prescribed dose of the Varicella vaccine.
What is Chickenpox?
Chickenpox or Varicella is a contagious, viral infection. It most commonly afflicts young children and common symptoms include itchy blisters all over the body, fever and loss of appetite. Headaches and fatigue are also symptoms of chickenpox, along with swollen lymph nodes and sore throats.
What Are the Types of Chickenpox Vaccine?
The vaccine is of two types. One is a chickenpox only vaccine, which contains a weak version of the virus. The other one is a combo of vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox.
Who Should Get Chickenpox Vaccine?
Children should get the chickenpox vaccine, and also adults who involved in healthcare and jobs that require them to be near children. Non-pregnant women of child-bearing age are also recommended to get the vaccine. Older children and adults who are living with younger children can also take the Varicella vaccine.
Benefits of Chickenpox Vaccine for Infants
The chickenpox vaccine is very effective and should be administered to young children. Here are some benefits of the vaccine:
98 percent of recipients do not contract the disease.
The risk of contracting shingles, a disease caused by the ‘reawakening if the dormant virus’ is reduced. If it does occur, the severity is less.
Reduces risk of related ailments like pneumonia and skin ailments
With every generation, the disease is less prevalent because of wise adoption of vaccines. Children are now less likely to be exposed to the disease because of the vaccine’s effectiveness.
How Safe is Chickenpox Vaccine for Babies
There are no major risks for babies from the chickenpox vaccine as it prepares their immune system against severe infection. A consultation with a doctor is recommended to check if the baby has certain allergies that may interfere with the treatment.
There may be a bit of soreness and swelling at the place of injection. Getting the vaccine for chickenpox is recommended because it is safer than getting the disease itself, not to mention the inconvenience caused by the latter scenario.
Recommended Schedule of Chickenpox Vaccination
A lot of concerned parents ask when do babies get chickenpox vaccine - the first shot is given when the child is between 12 to 18 months. The second vaccine shot is given when he or she is between 4 to 6 years.
Older children and adults can also be given the vaccine, for them, the time between the two shots should not be more than 4 to 8 weeks.
How the Vaccine is Given
Each Varicella vaccine dose is administered by subcutaneous injection and is around 0.5 ml. There are two doses.
Who Should Avoid Getting Vaccine Varicella?
Pregnant women should not get the vaccine, as its effect on the child has not been substantiated. There is a gelatin-free version of the vaccine, for those who are allergic to gelatin. Subjects who suffered an allergic reaction from the initial shot should not go ahead with the next one, and those allergic to neomycin also need to avoid the vaccine.
Others who need to avoid getting the vaccine include those who were involved in a blood transfusion process in the previous five months, patients being treated with steroids, and patients undergoing certain cancer treatments.
Is Varicella Vaccine a Live Vaccine?
The Varicella vaccine, named after the virus that causes chickenpox, is a live vaccine. It is derived from an attenuated sample. Attenuated viruses are very weak, but enough to cause the immune system to respond.
Can You Still Get Chickenpox After Vaccination?
The chickenpox vaccine protects children from future severe infections. Small minorities of children do get infected again, but this is a milder form of the disease, characterized by lower fever, fewer blisters and a very fast rate of recovery.
Are There Any Risks of Chickenpox Vaccine?
There are no serious risks to babies when they contract the chickenpox. In severe cases, side effects of chickenpox vaccine in babies can include bacterial skin infection, pneumonia and swelling of the brain (encephalitis).
It is extremely rare for pregnant women to contract the chickenpox and most of the afflicted recover well with no side effects on the baby.
Chickenpox was so common that it was part and parcel of growing up - it was considered a rite of passage. Now with vaccination and high levels of immunity amongst the population, children do not have to face this so often. It is essential to continue the vaccinations and protect your child from the discomfort and symptoms of the disease.

What Do Couples Miss the Most? It Is We Time!
In today's hustle and bustle, the 'we time' is lost somewhere. Our life is programmed in our brain. Every morning we get up, ready the kids for school, supervise the cook and maid and make sure all pre-requisites are completed to start the day. Then from home to office, office to daycare and back to home. The evening goes in making the kids complete their school project or homework. Dinner and a bit of the TV time soon turns in to night. And the kids are off to bed. Another day is over.Similarly, the 5 days of the week are over. The weekend goes in hosting guests at home, grocery shopping, video calls with parents and in-laws, and indulging in some crazy activities with kids.
Let me suggest some tips for getting some 'we time' with your spouse.
Plan a date.
Skip office for a day when possible.
Have a cup of tea with your better half.
Switch on romantic music.
Relax and enjoy the moment.
Take a shower.
Dress in the outfit you look the best.
Put on your spouse's favourite perfume.
Hang out together.
Go for a movie.
Have your favourite food.
Recall the good old times spent together.
If you are a home-loving couple, prepare your spouse's favourite cuisine.
Decorate your room with fresh flowers and candles.
Surprise your better half with some special gift.
Watch a movie at home or engage in any activity you both are interested in.
Keep your phone on silent mode and don't let it disturb you for a while.
It's the truth that "Relationship does exist but connectivity is lost." To some people, it may sound crazy, but in my opinion, 'we time' is also important as it strengthens the relationship and brings immense happiness to couples. So, plan the 'we time' with your better half. If you have been already doing it share your experiences in the comments section.

Brain Development in Premature Babies - Before and After Birth
Babies born before the 37th week are termed as premature. This may lead to many health and developmental issues in babies. The brain, in most preemies, is badly affected leading to learning and intellectual disorders. It may also cause communication problems, behavioural problems like ADHD and also neurological problems like cerebral palsy.
Preemie Baby Development
The moment a baby is conceived, her brain starts developing. If born after the 37th week, she will be born with a developed brain of more than 100 neurons. However, if a baby is born way before the due date, her brain will not be developed enough and as such she may be born with several health problems as well as disabilities.
1. Inside the Womb
The brain develops rapidly inside the womb. Within the 3rd week of gestation, three parts of the brain are formed. By the end of the first month, the brain starts functioning. In the second trimester, the brain connects to all parts of the body. In the third trimester, brain growth, as well as the head growth, is the most rapid. However, since preemies are born before this crucial phase, their brain is not developed properly.
2. Outside the Womb
Since preterm brain development is compromised, preemies suffer from health hazards as well as neurological problems and brain damage which may lead to several disabilities. The baby’s brain continues in its developing process even after birth. However, a full term baby’s brain which develops in the dark, inside the mother’s womb with closed eyelids, hardly any audible sounds floating in the amniotic liquid. Whereas a preemies’ brain gets stimulated by the various sounds, touch, sights and senses while it is developing. This is not good for the brain.
What are the Effects of Premature Birth on Brain Development?
Brain damage in premature babies can lead to severe and lifelong intellectual, behavioural as well as developmental disabilities. Since a preemie is born with an underdeveloped brain, the brain fails to work as it should in a normal set up. Blood vessels in the brain develop and become strong only after the 32nd week. Therefore there may be brain bleeds in premature babies born before this period. In such a situation, the baby may face certain challenges like –
They may not be able to grow physically as normally as other children
They may face learning disabilities
They may suffer from speech disorders and as such communicating with others could be a problem.
They may suffer from behavioural problems like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Moving around may become a problem if they are physically disabled due to Cerebral palsy in which the brain, the spinal cord and nerves get affected
FAQs
Listed below are some frequently asked questions on brain development in preterm babies.
1. Can Breastfeeding Boost Brain Development in Premature Babies?
Breast milk is certainly one of the best can give to her newborn. A mother’s milk has several nutrients that boost a baby’s immunity. Also, it has been observed that the brain of the preemies who have been breastfed develop faster instead of those who have been given formula milk.
2. Do All The Difficulties and Problems in Premature Births Arise Right After Birth?
No. Some problems and difficulties as a result of brain damage due to premature birth may arise even during childhood and even as late as adulthood.
It is imperative for mothers-to-be to avoid preterm labour by being careful with their diet and to consult their gynaecologist immediately in case they sense any problems during pregnancy. A little caution can help in giving birth to a healthy and full-term baby.

Love, Care and the Sincere Support of My Hubby
Hi! I am Rubeena, the mother of a one and a half-year-old boy, and I want to share something about my hubby. After marriage, every woman begins with a new life. Just like that, after my wedding, my new life started. I felt fortunate and blessed because I got such supportive and lovely in-laws and a sweet husband who cares and supports me in every way.
After 7 months of marriage, I got pregnant, and my in-laws were very much delighted. My husband is the only son in his family, and due to his job, we used to stay in the city while my in-laws were back in the village.
My pregnancy came along with some complications, and nobody was there to take care of me, except my hubby. During that difficult phase, my hubby took care of me, fed me and helped me recover from my illness. He made me fit after my delivery; he even looked after our son.
Now our child has grown up, and my hubby supports me with my job. My son is the gem of my life, the strength of his dad and the sweetheart of his grandparents. My in-laws support my job, and our son makes our relationship stronger day by day. I am very thankful to God for giving me such a lovely partner. It is true that "Marriages are made in heaven".
Love you forever my Jaan! I wish to stay in your arms till my last breath. Thank you for everything. I'd like to dedicate this song to my lovely hubby -
"Jab koi baat bigad jaye, jab ko mushkil pad jaye, tum dena saath mera, oooh humnawa.
Na koi hai na koi tha, zindagi mein tumhare siwa, tum dena saath mera, oooh humnawa".
Thank you for coming into my life as my partner and my backbone, and for making it so beautiful — lots of love to my hubby Nazeer and my son Rayyan.

I Don't Treat My Daughter Like a Son!
In the Present scenario ,parents boss about ,How well they treat their daughter just like their Son! But why can't a daughter be given her own value? Can't we nurture a daughter with her own dignity and perseverance.
The very first glance on the title and I might be labelled"old fashioned" by many of you but this is the truth of my life. Prevalent circumstances and environment have suddenly given rise to extra mileage and importance to the girl child. "Meri beti, Mera Abhiman" or "one daughter is equal to 10 sons" , you may have heard these phrases thrown around abundantly.
What catches my frenzy is- why we all are running in a rat race to prove that daughters are equal to sons? Ever heard any parent glorifying their sons achievements by saying "Humne Apne bete ko beti Ki Tarah Pala Hai " The answer is. " No" for sure .
Why do we need to make our daughters live out the privileges we think are only for sons? God never discriminated in the work, responsibilities or duties of men and women. It was society that drew the boundary lines among the genders ,in which one gender was supposed to run the stove and the other has to work for its fuel.
For me, I believe in gender neutrality.... if my daughter knows how to mend hem of a dress, my son should also know the same and vice versa. Driving, cooking financial independence, kickboxing dancing, washing clothes will be life skills I would like to teach my son and daughter both, irrespective of what the society has carved for them.
I don't want my daughter to be my son as she has her own virtues and attributes. For me both of them are part of my body blood and soul and they both have their distinct identities and skills and as a mother my duty is to make them a good human being rather to make anyone a shadow of other one. Kids are your prized possession . So if you are not treating your son as a daughter;do not treat your daughter as a son too!!
Instead develop an environment which is gender neutral, free from bias and doesn't restrict their dreams aspirations and flight of any of your kid. Let them soar high in the sky!
