Vaginal Smell While Pregnant - Causes & Remedies
Pregnancy brings about a lot of changes in a woman’s life. Despite the joy, it also brings morning sickness, nausea, back pain, headaches, etc. While the symptoms like morning sickness, mood swings, or back pain are discussed in great detail, other symptoms like vaginal discharge and vaginal smell are often ignored. Some women may experience an unusual smell from their vagina. Let’s find out what are the causes of vaginal smell and what you can do to get rid of that unpleasant smell.
Is it Normal to Have Vaginal Odour During Pregnancy?
It is normal for a woman to have vaginal discharge during pregnancy. Some women may also notice vaginal odour. Vaginal smell during pregnancy is a lot more common than you think. Over 65% of pregnant women have smelly vaginal discharge during early pregnancy. At least 6 out of 10 women experience a fishy odour from their vagina during pregnancy. So yes, it is normal.
What Causes Vaginal Smell During Pregnancy?
A strong vaginal odour during pregnancy may be due to altered pH balance, sweat, infections, hormonal and dietary changes, etc. If the cause is not a medical condition, then the odour will disappear once you deliver the baby. Women who are not pregnant can also have smelly vagina because of sweat and dietary changes.
Various causes of vaginal odour include:
1. Infections
Vaginal infections during pregnancy can lead to strong or foul odour. A yeast infection is caused by the excessive multiplication of naturally occurring fungi in the vagina. This causes persistent itchiness and a discharge with a smelly odour. Bacterial vaginosis is an infection caused by the proliferation of bacteria in the vagina. It might lead to a foul-smelling discharge during pregnancy.
2. Dietary Changes
Dietary changes during pregnancy is also one of the causes of smelly vagina during pregnancy. For instance, if you consume more garlic or spicy foods during pregnancy, it could change the odour of your vaginal discharge.
3. Altered pH Balance
The normal pH level of the vagina is between 3.8 and 4.5, which is in the acidic range. This acidic pH is caused by beneficial bacteria or natural vaginal flora that lives in the vagina and produces lactic acid. During pregnancy, excess blood supply to the vaginal region causes this pH to change. This makes the vagina vulnerable to bacterial infections such as vaginitis and can lead to fishy or foul-smelling discharge from vagina.
4. Hormonal Changes
A woman’s body undergoes a lot of hormonal changes during pregnancy. While pregnant, there is a sudden increase in the production of the two hormones progesterone and oestrogen. This dramatic increase in the two hormones helps in the formation of the placenta and provides the baby with nourishment. When a woman is pregnant, her prolactin levels will also increase, which will later help in the production of breast milk. These hormonal changes can increase the vaginal discharge and make it smelly.
How to Get Rid of Vaginal Odour While Pregnant
Vaginal odour and smelly discharge can be treated and prevented in the following ways:
1. Stay Clean and Dry
While pregnant, you should ensure that your vagina stays clean and dry. Shower more frequently and clean the vagina with lukewarm water. You can also use a mild soap or a feminine hygiene wash if it is prescribed by a doctor. Also keep the pubic hair short and neat.
2. Avoid Using Cosmetics
Avoid using cosmetics like scented feminine sprays, vaginal wipes, etc. Also avoid using any products like soaps that are harsh on the skin and can strip away the natural bacteria living in the vagina, making it vulnerable to infections.
3. Wear Cotton Underwear
Ditch the synthetic underwear and opt for cotton ones instead. Wearing a soft cotton underwear will allow the skin down there to breathe well and absorb the excess sweat.
4. Try Changing Your Diet
Making dietary changes during pregnancy is inevitable. Include a lot of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Avoid eating spicy foods or food containing excess garlic. This may alter the smell of sweat and reduce the vaginal odour.
5. Take Doctor-prescribed Medication
In case an infection is causing the vaginal odour, consult a doctor and take the medicines prescribed by your doctor.
When to Visit a Doctor
While the cause for foul vaginal smell during pregnancy may be simple things like sweat or dietary changes, it is important to consult a doctor to ensure that that you don’t have any infections or other conditions that can harm the baby. In the following circumstances, you should consult a qualified medical professional:
1. Persistent Foul Odour
Sometimes, a foul odour may persist for a long time during pregnancy. If it is accompanied with yellow or green discharge, you should consult a doctor. A green or yellow discharge is usually a sign of yeast or bacterial infection and should not be taken lightly.
2. Uncontrollable Itching
Irritation or uncontrollable itching in the vagina is also a sign of microbial infection, and it is advisable to consult a gynaecologist immediately.
3. Sextually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
Sexually transmitted diseases can also cause excessive vaginal discharge with strong odour. A gynaecologist can prescribe medication to treat such conditions and make sure that you and your baby stay healthy.
4. Pain and Inflammation
Experiencing pain or burning sensation during intercourse or urination is a sign of an infection. Inflammation and itching are warning signs of an infection and you should see your doctor right away.
5. Other Signs
If you notice blood in the vaginal discharge; if it has a cottage cheese-like appearance; if it smells fishy or is greenish or yellowish in colour, it is a sign that something is wrong. You should consult a doctor right away.
Prevention Tips
Good hygiene may prevent the occurrence of foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Here are some tips that you can follow to prevent smelly discharge:
Stay hydrated: One of the best ways to prevent vagina from smelling bad is staying hydrated. Drink at least 2-3 litres of fluids daily.
Wipe from front to back: Always wipe from the vagina toward the anus to lower the chances of spreading fecal bacteria to your vagina.
Do not douche: Douching can irritate the vaginal tissues and allow the bacteria to enter your urinary tract and spread an infection. You can clean your vagina with lukewarm water. Using sprays or scented soaps is not required.
A foul-smelling vagina during pregnancy could mean just about anything. It could be something as harmless as hormonal fluctuations or it could be a sign of an infection. Thankfully, there are plenty of remedies that can help reduce the smell or eliminate it completely. If you have smelly vaginal discharge, make sure that you maintain proper hygiene. However, if the problem persists, consulting a doctor would be your best bet.

Reading Stories to a Baby in the Womb - Reasons & Benefits
Between the 23 and 27 weeks of pregnancy, a baby starts hearing the different sounds. The clearest and significant sound that a baby can hear is his mother's heartbeat. But as the weeks pass, he starts responding to the sounds outside the womb too. You can start reading to your baby in the womb or play music and you never know he may respond. Reading a good book to your baby can be beneficial for your baby. It stimulates emotions in a baby and helps him react to different stimuli. It also prepares a baby for the life after his birth.
Why Is It Essential to Read to Your Baby
The stories you read to your baby evoke certain emotions in him. The rhyming lines and the lullabies develop a sense of voice modulation too from an early stage. Many aspects also indicate that reading helps babies to pick up newer words for their vocabulary pretty early in life and make it easier for them to understand the meaning easily. However, when a baby hears the voice in the womb, he becomes alert and responds to it. If you read to your baby daily, he will recognize your voice once he's out in the real world and this will develop the bond between you and your baby.
When Should You Start Reading to Your Baby in the Womb
Reading is an activity that doesn’t need a perfect time to start with. However, if you are specifically picking out music and books to read to your child, it is necessary to know the right time to begin with them as well.
The initial months of the baby are usually surrounded by getting used to the womb and figuring out the surroundings. Over time, as the baby gets into the groove of staying within the uterus and becomes comfortable with it, he begins to pick up sounds from outside as well as the mother’s heartbeat. This makes it easier for him to listen to the songs you hum and the words you speak.
Therefore, as you inch closer to completing 23 weeks of your pregnancy towards finishing up the second trimester, your little one will be able to react to your voice and any other actions easily. All of these phases are where the cognitive development of a child is also proceeding rapidly. Enhancing that by listening to the right music and reading stories that benefit him, can work wonders in his development.
Some Benefits of Reading to Your Unborn Baby
While figuring out the things to read to a baby in the womb, it is important to know how your activities are going to benefit the little one. Everything that you do, right from eating to speaking to exercising, affects the baby in one way or the other. The aural perception is so strong that most babies are able to develop an affinity for the native language over any other even without understanding it fully.
Pregnancy is not just a stressful time for the mother but also for the baby. The baby undergoes a fluctuation in emotions and can feel overwhelmed at times. Indulging in some nice reading activity can help you calm down and your soothing voice can also control the heart rate of your anxious baby and help him relax in your womb.
A baby’s bond with his mother develops right from the time he is in the womb. Skin-to-skin contact has its own strengths, which makes the bond stronger once the child is born, but the bond is truly formed from all the activities that the mother indulges in when the little one is inside her. Being constantly aware of the mother’s voice helps the baby develop trust for it, which is why most babies stop crying after they hear the mother’s voice. If a particular music is played regularly, the baby can recognise it pretty well, too. Playing it again once the baby is out can also strengthen the bond yet again. And this isn’t simply restricted to the mother. If the partner reads a story to the child, the baby will begin to recognize that voice too.
As your baby grows in your womb, his brain development is still in progress and the neural connections form rapidly. Listening to the mother’s voice or stories help strengthen those connections. And these can help him recall when he hears them again after birth. Repetition is a proven form of memorization and when the seeds are sown early in life right from the womb, it develops memory and concentration power in babies.
What Stories to Read to a Baby in the Womb
If you are an avid reader, you might be enjoying reading everything under the Sun. From romantic novels to murder mysteries to sci-fiction. But you can't read these to your little baby, be it if he is the womb or outside. If you are struggling to figure out what kind of stories would suit your baby the best, take a simple stroll in the children’s section of any bookstore.
Remember the movie Baby’s Day Out? Books similar to those where a baby goes around the world and visits different places can help instil a feeling of excitement and joy within the little one indirectly. Books that are filled with small poems, focusing on the rhyme scheme, can develop his tendency to recognize sounds and word formations. Opt for reading fantasy stories, that can enrich his imagination. Doctor Seuss, as well as Roald Dahl’s books, are meant for children, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait for your child to grow up. Go ahead and read these books to your little one in the womb. The way you read out a story to your child also matters. So, opt for rhyming stories and try to modulate your voice wherever needed.
Once you know what to read for your baby in the womb, don’t stop there. Combine the reading activity with listening to music or humming some songs of your own. Everything that a baby hears is going to work to his benefit and make him a lovely individual in every way possible.

Natural Killer Cells (NK Cells) and Pregnancy
Natural killer (NK) cells are a sub-type of white blood cells, which are crucial in our immune system. They play a key role in identifying and fighting foreign bodies, thereby preventing a woman's body from falling prey to various diseases during pregnancy. However, elevated natural killer cells in pregnancy have been associated with unsuccessful pregnancy and recurrent miscarriages. Clinics now offer tests to check the activity and number of active NK cells at the time of pregnancy.
What Are Natural Killer Cells?
Natural killer cells are lymphocytes that quickly act in response to various pathological challenges. They play a crucial role in destroying virally infected cells and controlling tumour cells. Apart from fighting disease, specialized NK cells found in placenta also play an essential role in establishing and maintaining pregnancy. These cells also help in providing blood to the growing foetus for its proper development and to protect it against infections and foreign bodies. Natural killer cells can kill infected cells without any prior activation, and that is why they are called natural killer cells.
What Are Its Types?
NK cells are of two types:
1. Uterine NK Cells
These immune cells are already present in the human uterus before the start of pregnancy. Their numbers significantly expand during the first trimester of pregnancy owing to increased progesterone levels and subsequently reduce as pregnancy progresses. These innate immune cells shelter the embryo from severe infections and ensure its proper development.
2. Peripheral NK Cells
These cells flow in the bloodstream and safeguard the body against different viruses and malignancies.
Role and Importance of NK Cells in Pregnancy
The function of NK cells in pregnancy is not clearly established till date. But some key points concerning the role of NK cells in pregnancy are:
NK cells existing in human endometrium dramatically increase in number due to the influence of progesterone during early gestation.
The incursion of trophoblast cells is required for the successful implantation of an embryo in the uterus. NK cells are thought to support the spread of trophoblast cells thus aiding in embryo implantation.
NK cells produce many cytokines which have a cytotoxic effect against infected cells which in turn helps in keeping the embryo safe from virus infections and ascertaining its normal growth.
NK cells are also an important source of angiogenic growth factors. They generate various angiogenic growth factors like angiopoietin (Ang-1, Ang-2), angiogenin, keratinocyte, fibroblast, a vascular endothelial growth factor, which help in supplying blood to the developing foetus.
What Causes Overproduction of Natural Killer Cells during Pregnancy?
High-stress levels or auto-immune disease can impact the NK cells activity. NK cells are disposed to enhance vigorously owing to an overactive immune system. In instances of some inflammation in the endometrial lining, pelvic cavity, or fallopian tubes, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, the immune system may react by sending NK cells moving in the bloodstream to attack and destroy the infected cells causing the problem. In such a scenario, the uterine NK cells, guarding the embryo, withdraw to allow the incoming peripheral NK cells to do their job. At times these cells tend to perceive the embryo as a foreign body thereby attacking and killing it which leads to a miscarriage.
Can Excess NK Cells in the Bloodstream Cause Miscarriage?
Natural killer cells are often linked to miscarriage, which is not completely wrong. An overabundance of NK cells in the bloodstream can result in a miscarriage. The NK cells mistakenly start seeing the embryo as a foreign organism thus attacking and damaging it. Excessive production of NK cells can also negatively impact embryo implantation in the uterus causing infertility in women.
How to Balance NK Cells during Pregnancy
Many couples wish to know what stops natural killer cells in pregnancy. You will be happy to know that natural killer cells can be controlled in pregnancy. Few ways to balance high NK cells to have a successful pregnancy are as follows:
In case of inflammation in a woman's pelvic cavity, a biopsy can be done to check the heightened levels of NK cell activity. The biopsy is usually performed between 24th and 28th days of menstrual cycle. The procedure is an invasive one but not painful. It usually doesn't require the use of anaesthesia.
A comprehensive evaluation of T3, T4 and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) levels to evaluate the working of the thyroid gland can also be done. It helps in assessing the presence of thyroid antibodies.
An effective treatment to regulate excess NK cells brings into play the utilization of steroids. Prednisone is a commonly used steroid administered in a dosage of about 10 mg to 20 mg every day. However, steroids during pregnancy can have serious side effects on both the mother and the unborn child. Steroids may not just suppress the NK cells activity but can also dampen the entire immune system leaving the pregnant woman more susceptible to common cold and flu.
Some patients used certain natural products and herbal treatments and experienced positive results. These natural treatments can prove effective in controlling excess NK cells and reducing inflammation. However, it is advised that you consult your doctor before taking any such natural treatment during pregnancy to avoid any probable complications later on.
Nature killer cells may be a possible cause of unexplained infertility. The probability certainly increases in case a woman is prone to inflammatory conditions of the pelvic cavity or PCOS. Screening fertility patients, particularly, those who have undergone recurrent miscarriages for NK cells can help in producing important results and finding out viable treatments for successful pregnancy in future.

The only hug safe for my baby is that by Babyhug
I was a naive mother and hardly knew about many brands of baby products. Many of us go through this phase and suffer from great confusion and anxiety in choosing a safe and good quality brand of products for our little ones. Being experienced now I can safely recommend Babyhug for all mother's to use for their babies. The first time I used a Babyhug product was simply on the basis going by good reviews on FirstCry. It was a great decision. I had purchased a feeding pillow. It proved to be so useful. Not only it looked great but also it was sturdy yet soft. I went on to trying more products by them and till date have never been disappointed. The bathtub was a delight. It was cushioned and could be folded too. It also came with a drainage plug that's such a useful feature. I bought their baby wipes and since then they're my favourite. It's mildly scented and has just the right amount of wetness. It is gentle on the skin too. I myself switched to Babyhug wrt wipes for cleaning my face too. My daughter's first finger brush too was by Babyhug. It was so soft on the gums yet effective. Their sippers are a must for babies. They look so attractive and help babies switch from bottles easily. And of course how can I forget the clothes! I still make her wear Babyhug clothes. They're of great quality and very tasteful. Products are of great make and not unnecessarily expensive. I wish the brand every success and intend to remain a loyalist forever. Thank you so much Babyhug for being such an important part of my motherhood. I wish I can use their products for as long as possible. Read more

5 Key Social Skills You Must Sharpen
Social skills are must-haves to take you places, help you meet the right people, and get you the attention you deserve. They help you make deeper inroads in your relationships and career. Are you naturally blessed with these essential traits or do you need to sharpen them?
Smooth communication methods and good social skills make your life active, fun-filled, free from depression, and yes, very successful. With socialising and interacting being some of the most fundamental needs of human beings, modern day women are going an extra mile to adopt the skills for the same. Check out the most important social skills that promise to make your life more meaningful and enjoyable.
5 Ways of Developing Social Skills
1. The Ability to Stay Calm in Social Situations
In spite of having all the key social skills in place, if you're stressed or anxious, your brain stops functioning and you tend to become agitated. You end up saying the wrong things. It's essential to be calm and composed when meeting people or relating to them in any way. Also, any signs of nervousness, irritability or stress on your face will make others cautious, thereby making them behave differently around you.
2. Connect Well with Proper Means of Communication
The best way to enhance your social skills is by working upon the way you communicate with others. Good listening skills are a must, and leave your mark as an attractive and well-groomed person. Talking in turns, showing interest with ‘listening' noises such as 'oh yes’ or 'Uh-huh', asking for feedback about the things said by others, and so forth, are some of the many ways in which you can retain a person’s interest in conversing with you.
3. Be Empathetic with Other’s Interests and Issues
More often than not, self consciousness leads to social anxiety. This can be removed by allowing your focus to rest upon the problems and interests of others in conversation with you. Along with getting your audience more interested in you as a person, your activities, and other interests and your empathetic nature will send out the right signals and earn you many new friends.
4. How Important is it to Talk About Yourself
Talking a lot about yourself and very early in the conversation, may transform you into an instant turn-off. It’s best to stick to general and polite conversation in the beginning, move on to specific topics of mutual interest, and then get personal—only if the situation permits. For instance, talking about your darkest fears or deep desires are topics best avoided, unless you happen to be with a bestie.
5. Make Eye Contact and Smile
While talking, you need to gain the trust and attention of others by making constant eye contact, and yes smiling. It's a fact that the right social skills coupled with a direct and honest smile go a long way in breaking the ice between two people. It helps in nurturing a strong bond—one that promises to last for a long time.
Good social skills give you the confidence of interacting with others freely. So, gear up to develop all the right traits that promise to make you more acceptable and popular as a person and in all social setups. Begin today! Read more

A. Hello mam! If it is due to colic pain /gas, it is common in newborns. Make sure that you burp your baby after every feed. Don't feed just before your baby is to sleep. Make a routine like feed, play and sleep. Burp inbetween feedings. Colic pain will stop automatically at 5 or 6 months. So don't worry. Happy parenting!
