When and How do Babies Recognize their Name
Out of the many first things that expectant parents may do is to pick a name for their baby. After the baby’s arrival, they may be calling the baby by his name constantly hoping for some response. It is natural for excited parents to eagerly await the moment when their baby starts to know his name and respond to it.
However, it may be a few months before a baby can begin recognising his name. Name recognition normally happens when babies turn 6 to 7 months old. But regularly repeating your baby's name may not just be delightful for you but can also help him get familiar to its sound.
At What Age Do Babies Recognize Their Name
New moms may be keen to learn when do babies know their name. You may notice your baby turning towards you when you say his name as early as a couple of weeks old. But this response of your baby may not be due to name recognition but because of familiarity to the sound of your voice.
Research indicates that babies tend to start knowing their name between 6 to 7 months of age. A 6 months old baby may develop the ability to correlate familiar sounds with people or objects they denote. For example, if you indicate to a ball while saying the word ‘ball’ your baby may realise the connection though he won't be able to say the word until he is 10 to 12 months old or beyond.
However, parents need to understand here that development in babies occurs in a continuum. Every baby can have varying time frames to cover the various developmental milestones. It is perfectly normal if some babies exhibit name recognition a little earlier than others or if some display it a little later.
Parents may like to focus more on frequently using the baby’s name while talking to him so that he may eventually make the association between himself and his name when being called. The important point to bear in mind is that the overall social development of the baby is progressing the pace notwithstanding.
How Do Babies Start Recognizing Their Name
Studies show that words often repeated and said with emphasis can help in initiating language comprehension babies. Words usually articulated to a baby in affectionate tones like mommy or baby’s name constantly can foster recognition and response in babies.
Babies are accustomed to listening to their mothers since the time they were in the womb. Therefore, your baby may not only be familiar with your voice but can also comprehend the tone of your voice and thereby realise the different emotions like love, happiness, anger, anxiety, sadness. The emotional connection which gets established between a mother and her baby when he is still in the womb as part of his neurological growth assists the baby to evolve his verbal language communication skills later on.
How to Teach Baby to Respond to His Name
Some easy tips to help you teach your baby to respond to his name can be:
It is better to start using your baby’s name to call him right from his early months.
Avoid referring to your baby by pet-names and
Talk as much as you can with your baby daily and use his name repeatedly which may facilitate familiarisation and relationship between the sound and his name.
Ask other family members and people also to use the baby’s name while talking to him.
For better name recognition keep the calling session short and crisp and take small breaks between different occurrences of name-calls.
Initially practise calling out your baby’s name to him in a setting with minimalistic distractions.
In due course introduce a setting with distractions and other people and consistently keep calling his name till he turns to look your way.
You may like to share a reward with your baby after a successful response as part of positive reinforcement.
Parents need not pointlessly worry and hurry their child unnecessarily in case they feel their baby is delaying responding to his name. Just enjoy the frequent cute chat sessions with your baby during this thrilling phase letting him indulge you with his own adorable babbles and eventually he may reward you with suitable responses. Nevertheless, in case your baby doesn’t seem to respond to his name even by the time he is of 9 months it is advisable to refer to a doctor.

Child Neglect - Causes, Effects And Prevention
Childhood is a period when memories form, emotional, social, and cognitive development happens, and when children become sensitive to their surrounding environments. Their experience later shapes up who they become as adults and influences their well-being, career, and life, in general.
Child abuse and neglect are considered some of the leading causes of fatalities and death in the world. Most often, there is no single contributor to child neglect but rather neglect stems from multiple factors such as environment, communities, parents, inadequate policies, and poverty. Societies and communities experience higher rates of crime and violence through an increased number of cases related to child abuse and neglect.
In this post, we'll be discussing what child neglect is, what you can do to prevent it, and how to identify signs and effects of child neglect. Let's get started.
What is Child Neglect?
Globally speaking, about 2/3rds of reports coming to Child Protective Services constitute child neglect, according to community surveys in 2006. Child neglect has substantial long-term effects on a child's mental health and physical/cognitive development.
Simply put, child neglect is when a child undergoes abuse related to having their basic needs not met such as a lack of adequate healthcare, the deficit in nutrition and educational needs, and a lack of personal safety/security.
Child neglect hinges on parents' behaviour toward their children. Parental failure associated with not being able to provide or a meet child's needs is also classified as child neglect.
Causes
The different causes of child neglect are -
Poverty
Alcohol or drug abuse by parents
Parents who are facing depression, unemployment, loss of insurance, or life-related stress, which are then directed towards children as child neglect or abuse
Adults who grew up being victims of child abuse/neglect, thus considering child neglect as normal
What Are Its Different Types?
A child left in the apartment while a parent goes drinking, or a child deprived of medication are common portraits of child neglect; however, it doesn't just stop here.
Here are the different types of child neglect you should be aware of-
Emotional Neglect - When a parent is too busy to care for his/her child due to career-related issues or employment needs, it amounts to emotional neglect. An alternative scenario is when a parent withholds emotional affection from children and treats it as a form of discipline. Indifference and a lack of attention to a child's psychological state or emotional needs also fall under this criterion.
Educational Neglect - When a parent is unwilling to pay for a child's education or does not provide the necessary academic environment at home, thus hindering their child's academic performance, it counts as educational neglect. Allowing a child to constantly skip school and not seeking special educational help for children with learning problems are also considered to be different types of educational neglect.
Physical Neglect - Abandoning a child in empty places, leaving a child with a medical condition unsupervised, failing to administer medical attention or prescriptions to a child all fall under this category. Physical neglect is also associated with failing to seek appropriate medical care, malnourishment of a child, or not providing food/basic livelihood necessities to children.
Hitting and verbally abusing children are associated with child neglect too. Screaming, yelling harsh words, or making a child feel inferior or out of character falls under verbal abuse.
Allowing children to be subjected to alcohol or drugs are different forms of psychological neglect.
Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of child neglect are categorized into two - physical and emotional. Emotional signs include behavioural symptoms as well. Watch out for these signs in the classroom and outdoor environments to spot child neglect or abuse.
Physical Signs
The physical signs of child neglect are interchangeably linked to abuse. They are:
Slower-than-normal development from an emotional, social, and academic context. The child may even regress to poorer performance and experience a decline in learning skills in the classroom and outside as well.
Failure to achieve appropriate height and weight gains according to age is a common sign of child neglect through malnutrition and lack of care at home.
Suspicious or unexplained injuries on the child's body, such as injuries denoting certain patterns or appearing on parts of the body in protected areas like the genitals, inside of the arms, and buttocks. If a child refuses to explain the reason behind the injury or if the reason doesn't sound believable, then it is a possible sign of physical neglect or abuse.
Emotional and Behavioural Signs
Emotional signs of child neglect are linked to behavioural patterns inside and outside the classroom. Common signs and symptoms of childhood emotional neglect are-
Being scared to talk about a parent or showing fear when a parent's name is brought up in conversations.
Low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression
Suicidal thoughts
When the child says nobody is at home to care for him/her half the time
Difficulty focusing during class hours or studies
Being withdrawn from social activities or being extremely obedient without question
Not wanting to go back home
Effects of Child Neglect
The effects of child abuse and neglect result in long-term consequences when they go unnoticed. Long-term neglect in children shapes up personalities into abnormal types if left unchecked. When a child grows up into an adult, he/she may see the world in a skewed perspective as a result of long-term neglect.
Given below are the common long-term effects of child neglect.
Interpersonal Relationship Problems
Young children and infants exposed to abuse and neglect experience insecure or abnormal attachment problems with caregivers. Trusting caregivers becomes hard for children who are primarily meant to be a source of warmth and comfort.
This translates to interpersonal relationships problems later on such as withdrawing from social conversations, avoiding active participation in communities, having trouble interacting with peers, and similar associated issues stem from long-term child neglect. A child may have trouble holding conversations as well due to neglect.
2. Learning and Development Problems
Lack of focus in the classroom, not being able to keep up with homework, and falling behind school peers and curriculum requisites are linked to childhood emotional neglect at home. Poor academic performance, difficulty in developing expected speech and language patterns according to one's age, and negative scores associated with reading and math are linked to learning and developmental problems in neglected children.
Mental Health Issues
Maltreated children develop mental health disorders like PTSD, ADHD, anxiety, stress, and depression. "Complex trauma" disorders, psychotic disorders, and conduct related disorders also fall under this. Eating disorders like anorexia and binge-eating disorders may also be linked with childhood emotional neglect by parents.
Suicide
Research studies suggest that child neglect or abuse equates to an increased risk of suicidal attempts in kids. For children who have a history of sexual abuse or exploitation, the risk of suicide is higher due to the internal feelings of shame and guilt that they experience and bottle up within themselves.
5. Usage of Alcohol and Other Drugs
Higher levels of substance abuse like drugs, tobacco, and alcohol are linked to increased childhood emotional neglect. Children turn to drugs and alcohol when they no longer find an outlet or person they can talk to about their feelings. Since their only source of comfort disappears, they find comfort in substances, to numb emotional pain and unwanted feelings.
Behavioural Problems
Children who belong to families with a low level of education or a history of drug or alcohol abuse experience chronic behavioural problems like anxiety, AHDH, low self-esteem, and being depressed or socially withdrawn in nature. External behavioural problems like being hyperactive or aggressive in daily encounters are the result of long-term neglect in children.
7. Violence and Criminal Activity
Research suggests that children exposed to physical conflicts and exposure to pain through neglect and abuse are more likely to manifest aggressive behaviours and inflict pain on others. Youth violence and criminal activity are strong indicators of child neglect in the past. Teenage pregnancies are accompanied by increased substance abuse and mental health disorders as a result of violence and sexual assault faced at home.
Physical Health Issues
Brain damage, loss of hearing, and injury to the spinal cord are common physical health effects faced by children who experience neglect in the early year. Children who face adverse experiences of neglect are more than likely to experience assault related issues like Shaken Baby Syndrome, or even die during the course of neglect due to developing physical health issues.
Homelessness
Children who experience abuse or neglect at home experience homelessness as adults when they are moved to out-of-home care, and forced to leave after turning 18. A lack of social support networks, poor academic achievements, and unemployment issues faced after leaving out-of-home care can contribute to homelessness in children with a history of neglect. Domestic violence and neglect at home may also drive kids away from home, thus leading to homelessness.
Fatal Abuse
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 31,000 children between the ages of 15 and younger die every year due to homicide. Reports suggest that children die due to incidents of fatal abuse such as falls, assault, and maltreatment by parents. Most cases go unreported due to a lack of sufficient investigation and a failure of running post-mortem examinations.
Prevention
Prevention of child neglect early on through extended care and enhanced educational services will benefit both children and parents. Here are the following ways to prevent child neglect/abuse in households early on:
Providing early education to the youth and catering education to parents related to how to cope with the daily stressors of life, family planning, and teaching parents how to provide a nurturing environment for their kids. Services that strengthen families and provide emotional/mental support will play an enormous role in child neglect prevention.
Mental health services to parents who face depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders will mitigate stress and enable parents to come out of their problems and care for children. By enabling parents to be sound and healthier emotionally/psychologically, they become better caregivers as their children grow.
Increasing public and social awareness of child neglect in communities will be pivotal towards the change that's needed to prevent it. Policies should be drafted and resources must be allocated to programs that implement the changes necessary to prevent child neglect through poverty, malnutrition, and ill-treatment at home. When the public becomes an ally, child neglect is tackled right from the beginning through necessary large-scale actions.
Child abuse and neglect are a result of a combination of factors or may even due to be single parenthood. Educating the children, parents, and bringing community awareness about the situation will play a great role early on towards the prevention of child neglect. Where education is concerned, ensuring children and parents are provided necessary education is key towards the prevention of neglect. Counselling and therapy are recommended for parents who have a hard time psychologically caring for their kids at home.

This simply isn’t restricted to having a good nutritive diet but has a strong link towards how regularly you exercise, which helps in streamlining the metabolism of your own body itself.
Is Exercise Good for Fertility?
So if you’re wondering can exercise help fertility levels rise back again, there isn’t a definitive study to prove it, but results have shown to be beneficial in that regard. The aspects that govern fertility in women and men, all tie down to having the internal bodily processes functioning at their optimal levels. Any long-term changes in diet, lifestyle, and exertion for that matter could have a lasting effect on the fertility aspect.
What are the Advantages of Exercises on Fertility?
Exercising regularly does have a lot of advantages, all of which benefit the body in one way or the other. Apart from those, there are a few major effects of exercising that indirectly work towards bringing back the lost fertility within you.
1. Improvement in The Quality of Sleep
Sleeping is, of course, essential for our body in the necessary amounts since that is when the body actually begins to work on itself and carry out all the maintenance and repair activities within. Although there is no direct connection between sleeping with fertility, any reduction in getting a good amount of sleep starts manifesting in the body as obesity. Now, obesity and fertility are linked together quite closely, and gaining a lot of unhealthy weight is bound to reduce your chances of conceiving a child. Exercising regularly helps set the body in a good rhythm, allowing sleep to set in at the right times, and giving you deep unbroken sleep cycles.
2. Reduction in Unhealthy Weight
Being overweight or even obese does affect your body in numerous ways. Men are known to have poor sperm count and motility as a result of that, whereas obese women are at a much higher risk. Obese women do tend to face numerous problems in conceiving a child, as well as complications throughout pregnancy, some of which might even result in defects during birth or a miscarriage, too. Burning the excess fat is a necessity in this regard, which can be very well achieved by opting for cardio-based exercises or bodyweight training, making you lose your weight in a healthy way.
3. Lowered Stress
Mental health plays a key role in maintaining your physical health. Any amount of undue anxiety and continued stress can impact your body in various ways, one of which is also a reduction in fertility. At times, this effect is not direct and is usually a result of various activities that are undertaken to reduce stress, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, binging on fast food, drug use, and so on. Exercise helps in releasing various hormones in your body that make you feel better, reduce your stress levels, and consequently make your body better.
How Does Excessive Exercise Affect Fertility?
Many people are generally surprised to know that excessive exercise and infertility has a strong connection between them. As beneficial as exercising appropriately might be for the health, there is a strong correlation between people who overdo exercises in a strenuous manner, and increased levels of infertility within them.
1. Effects on Women
In women, studies have indeed shown that low levels of exercises have resulted in infertility, especially in those suffering from obesity. But, women who have been undertaking strenuous exercises regularly, or exercising until they were completely exhausted, have had increased infertility levels as well. Some of the major reasons for that are as follows.
Increased Cortisol Levels
One of the key observations that various researches and studies have noted is that when women undergo intense exercise regimens for extended durations, the biological balance of various hormones undergoes a change. Primary amongst it is a severe reduction in the level of thyroid hormones within the body. This is quite counterproductive for the health since thyroid works towards increasing the metabolic activity within the body, and a reduction in those hormones would not be beneficial in that regard.
Followed by the thyroid, there is a marked rise in the levels of cortisol as well. A combination of both these effects results in an undue stress on the adrenal system of the woman’s body. Prolonged exposure to such stress changes the core method of how it is handled biologically, which can very well manifest in terms of reduced fertility and hormonal imbalance.
Low Body Fat
There is good body fat and bad body fat. This is pretty much the reason why most women choose to exercise intensely, in order to burn their excess body fat as quickly as possible and be in a healthy shape to handle their pregnancy. However, studies have observed that such women have such low levels of body fat that it works in reducing the overall fertility in the body. Intense exercises and low body fat levels also result in irregularities of menstruation and ovulation, which is a result of low estrogen levels as well. Both of these are necessary to be in a proper rhythm to conceive a child.
2. Effects on Men
While most men exercise to improve sperm motility and overall health, the intense pursuit of achieving quick fitness and a muscular body works against their favour, and leaves most men visually fit but internally infertile.
Causes Sperm Defects
In the pursuit of achieving great sperm health, increased motility, and overall better sperm quality, undergoing intense exercise regimens have shown to output the contrary in such men. The reason for that is pretty straightforward and is directly linked to body temperature. Exercising always pushes up the temperature within the body’s core, which also is elevated in the regions of sperm production. However, sperm production is optimal only when that area is significantly cooler as compared to the body. This, in fact, then results in reduced sperm count instead of elevating it.
Decreased Luteinizing Hormone and Testosterone
Another important reason behind the reduction in sperm count of men exercise intensely for long durations, is the reduced levels of two primary hormones, namely testosterone and the luteinizing hormone. It has been believed that exercise boosts testosterone, but intense exercise actually cuts it down. Most of the times, these can bounce back to normal once the regimen is scaled down to normalcy.
How to Know if You are Exercising Too Much?
Once you have an answer to the question can too much exercise affect fertility, you can start keeping a lookout for certain signs, which can indicate that the exercise regimen you adhere to needs to be scaled down.
1. Soreness and Fatigue
Your own body will start giving you the right signs if you push yourself beyond the healthy limit. Exercising is usually rejuvenating but strenuous exercise will cause your body to feel sore, lead you to have a broken sleep or even result in performing poorly in your exercises. These are all results of stressing out your body beyond its capacity.
2. Training for Extended Hours
Depending on your age and fitness, there is a stipulated amount of time one should exercise daily. But most strenuous exercisers tend to undertake a lot of training, which could last even for more than an hour on a daily basis. This is not healthy and can affect the body in a variety of unintended ways.
3. Improper Menstrual Cycle
A missed period might make you think that you have gotten pregnant. However, periods can be missed or even delayed as a result of intense exercises. The hormone levels within the body fluctuate a lot, which disturbs the natural rhythm of menstruation, giving rise to such results. These also affect your ovulation, consequently reducing the chances of conceiving a child.
Best Fertility Boosting Exercises
Knowing the right exercise to increase fertility is essential in helping you maintain your health without impacting your chances of conception.
1. Cardio exercises
This includes walking, jogging, aerobics, Zumba and can increase circulation in the body. Good flow of blood is essential for a healthy pregnancy. You can start with 15 minutes of brisk walking or jogging each day and gradually increase it to 30 minutes.
2. Strength training
Lifting weights, within your comfort, can help build muscle mass in the body and enhance stamina. Try moderate strength training, preferably with a trainer three or four days in a week.
3. Stretching and flexibility
Always perform stretching exercise before working out. These will increase your flexibility, relieve tension and lower the chances of any injury while working out.
4. Yoga
This may not be as intense as any other cardio exercises but yoga is absolutely essential to help maintain a level of flexibility in your body, as well as work towards reducing the stress and anxiety, boosting your mental health quite effectively.
Which Exercises Should be Avoided?
While adopting an exercise for fertility improvements, there needs to be an awareness of the exercises one should stay away from, to not impact it in the worst of ways.
Any kind of intense running or gymnastics that is taxing for the body
Exercising for long durations, often more than an hour
Opting for boot camp exercises, which are often very intense
Sprinting and running for long distances on a daily basis
Exercising throughout the week without any day for recovery
Undertaking core strength exercises while you are ovulating
Adopting hot yoga which can raise body temperatures and affect fertility
Should Women Exercise after IVF or IUI?
While crafting your fertility exercise plan, it is best to get your doctor’s advice regarding it, especially if you have opted for IVF or IUI. Most of the times, doctors tend to ask women to avoid exercises since it might affect the implantation of the embryo or retrieval of the eggs. That being said, having a light morning or evening walk, or simple yoga or breathing exercises can help you feel better with minimal effort.
Combining exercise and fertility treatment seems to be a strange way of connecting things together. Knowing how well linked both of them are, making the appropriate changes in your lifestyle is quite necessary. Adopting the right actions can help you maintain your health while keeping your fertility at a high level, too.
