Home Remedies to End All Your Hair Woes This Monsoon
Ask any woman, and she’ll tell you that rain is her hair’s worst enemy. Right from frizziness to hair fall, rain brings with it problems that you just can’t deal with. Especially if you’re a mother who can barely find time to breathe, let alone go to the salon for hour-long treatments. The good news is, these problems can be tackled quite easily at home when you’re prepared, and we’ll tell you just how. Here are some common hair problems mothers face during pregnancy, and a few ways to banish them forever!
1. Greasy scalp
Women typically complain of a greasy scalp during monsoon, while the ends may still remain dry or normal. This is due to humidity, which leads to oil buildup. When not treated, a greasy scalp can cause further issues such as dandruff, not to forget, making your hair look limp. Dilute 1/4th cup of lemon juice with 2 cups of water and rinse your hair with this mixture as the last step of your hair wash routine. Lemon juice takes away excess grease and adds volume to the hair.
2. Dandruff
Greasy scalp is the number one cause for dandruff, which occurs when the scalp sheds white flaky dead skin cells. The scalp also feels incredibly itchy, which is a major cause of distress in most mothers. The condition can also be a result of sensitivity to products, dry scalp, or fungal infection. There are a number of home remedies for dandruff, such as applying a fenugreek hair mask, which does wonders for your hair.
3. Hair fall
The chemicals and dirt in rainwater can cause hair fall. Moreover, the humidity during monsoon causes dandruff, which further leads to hair fall, when not treated. Double-whammy! Applying a 15-minute hair mask with 1/4 cup of amla pulp, 1/4 cup of yoghurt and 1/2 cup of onion juice can make your hair stronger, preventing hair fall in the long run. Vitamin E is also great for hair and skin, so add 2 capsules of Vitamin E oil to the mask for better results.
4. Frizzy hair
Frizziness is a major hair concern for women, during the monsoon season. Whether you have straight hair or curly hair, you’re bound to face this problem, unless you’re genetically blessed. Thankfully, there are numerous ways to make sure you don’t look like you’re growing a bird’s nest on your head, this monsoon. Our favourite is a mixture of coconut oil and Vitamin E oil.
5. Dull hair
Where frizziness goes, dull hair follows. Humidity, dandruff, and frizziness can make your hair look limp and dry. An apple cider rinse takes care of both, dull and frizzy hair, killing two birds with one stone. Mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1/2 cup of water, and rinse your hair with this mixture as the last step of your hair wash routine. The apple cider vinegar balances pH levels, getting rid of frizziness and restoring a lustrous look to the hair.
Don’t let the monsoon stop you from showing off shiny, smooth, and bouncy hair. Having a baby may make it hard to spend hours on your hair, but healthy hair is just 15 minutes away. Identify your concerns, and with a few simple steps, you’ll have healthy hair that looks like you just stepped out of the salon.

Why Should You Avoid Eating Licorice Root during Pregnancy?
When you are pregnant, your grannies and mother will send a horde of suggestions of food to eat, exercises and home remedies to deal with your pregnancy! Out of the many foods they ask you not to eat, licorice will be one.
For your health, you would need to avoid alcohol, smoking and even your morning coffee during pregnancy. It’s the same case with licorice as well. Licorice, similar to that found in Twizzlers and other candies, consist of a natural component that is highly dangerous during your pregnancy.
Let’s find out if licorice root is safe during pregnancy.
What is Licorice?
Licorice, a natural ingredient, is the root of a plant known as Glycyrrhiza Glabra. It has a unique sweet flavour and is also known to have compounds that can act as an anti-depressant. It can help with calming nervousness by regulating your stress hormones.
When consumed in controlled amounts, it is an excellent natural remedy for several health conditions including heartburn, asthma, fungal and viral infections. It also has therapeutic benefits for treating ulcers, cough, arthritis, yeast infections and more.
Can Pregnant Women Eat Licorice?
Doctors and scientists have strongly advised expectant and lactating mommies to avoid consuming licorice. This is done in order to protect your little one from potential health issues. Licorice tea while pregnant may come under herbal teas that you can have, but you mustn’t consume it for the safety of your baby.
According to many studies, licorice must be avoided by expecting mothers at all cost possible. While it may offer multiple medicinal benefits, the root contains a compound known as ‘Glycyrrhizin’. High consumption of the root can cause many health problems to pregnant women like headaches, high blood pressure, water retention, fatigue, or even a heart attack. When consumed in smaller quantity, the side effects that can be noticed are a pain in the limbs and numbness.
Negative Effects of Having Licorice while Pregnant
With high consumption of licorice root, there is a high-risk chance of miscarriage or preterm delivery, which means a shorter gestation period. Premature birth in itself has it’s drawbacks to the baby.
Consuming licorice root during your pregnancy can lead to the impairing of the placenta. The compound found in licorice, Glycyrrhizin, could increase the chances of your glucocorticoids or stress hormones to reach the baby in the uterus. This leads to an adverse effect on the foetus’s brain development, lowering the intelligence levels and increasing the behavioural problems in the child as they grow up.
Chances of your child’s low cognitive skill development can also be a side effect of high licorice root consumption. It is likely that your child may be prone to develop conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD.
Licorice root has an oestrogen-like effect, which could possibly cause severe foetal development complications if used in high quantities during your pregnancy. A male foetus when exposed to these high levels of oestrogen, the chances of him developing testicular abnormalities are high. This will eventually lead to infertility later in life. Meanwhile, a female foetus when exposed to too much oestrogen during the growing period may develop reproductive tract issues.
If you love licorice, just be mindful and alert of the potential threat to you and your baby’s life with the consumption of licorice root. As with most pregnancy advice, practice moderation. Just remember that when you’re expecting, you should avoid licorice root as much as possible, despite its many medicinal benefits.

Feeding your little ones something they like which is at the same time healthy is a tough task indeed. Kids just tend to prefer foods that are bad for them, like junk and processed food. Another problem you might be facing is that of time: as busy or working mothers, it might be hard for you to pack a nutritious meal into their lunch boxes before they head off to school. Luckily for you, this article provides ten children's lunch box ideas that are unique, delicious and healthy.
Easy Lunch Box Ideas & Recipes for Kids
1. Fruit Smoothie
This is a refreshing drink for anyone, especially if the weather is warm. However, make sure you do not replace water with smoothies or fruit juices. The easiest way to make a fruit smoothie is by combining fruits of your choice (ideally bananas, apples, mangoes, custard apples, strawberries, etc.) with milk, nuts, cinnamon and vanilla essence in a blender. Adjust the amounts to get the consistency you desire. It is preferable you sweeten the drink with jaggery or honey rather than refined sugar.
2. Uttapam
Uttapam or savoury bread pancakes have been a staple South Indian dish for hundreds of years. To make them, you will need bread, onions, tomatoes, milk, capsicum, potatoes, chilli powder, masala, and salt. Add all the ingredients together and mix to make a thick glutinous batter. Spread some groundnut or rice bran oil in a heated pan, and pour some of the batter over it. Let the batter take a roughly round shape, then let it fry over a low flame until both sides are honey brown in colour. Uttapams can be served with chutney, sambar or ketchup.
3. Beaten Rice Tikki
One of the most commonly used ingredients in Indian cuisine is beaten or flattened rice; it is used to make several dishes such as Poha, Pulau, Dahi Chura and so on. This recipe will make use of any leftover poha at home to create a tasty snack. Grind the leftover poha you have in a blender. Combine it with cooked potatoes, garam masala, ginger, garlic, chillies, onions, and salt. Shape the mixture into flattened disks or tikkis, then fry them in oil over a medium flame until they are brown.
4. Bread Sushi
One of the easiest snacks to make at home is the completely vegetarian sushi roll. It is incredibly delicious and will have your kids begging for more. To make it, cut off the crusts from wholegrain bread slices, then flatten the bread under a rolling pin. Layer the upper side of the flattened slice with peanut butter, jam, butter, mustard or any condiment you think your child will enjoy. Finally, roll the bread from one end to another, and cut it in half. Voila! Bread Sushi!
5. Veggie Toast
This dish is an effective way of delivering vegetables to your child’s diet. Pick a selection of vegetables such as brinjal, tomatoes, capsicum, onions, and carrots. Cut them into small pieces and fry them in oil with salt, ginger and garlic. Add bread slices to a separate pan, toasting them until golden brown. Decorate the toast with a helping of the veggies in different ways. Add cheese, chaat masala and other flavors to improve the taste.
6. Bread Rolls
Bread rolls are amazing appetizers your child can take to school. Combine cooked potatoes, green chillies, garam masala, coriander and garlic and fry them together in groundnut oil. After a couple of minutes, take them off the stove and add ginger and pudina leaves. Now soak bread slices in water, squeeze out excess moisture, place the mixture above on the slice and fold the bread so it covers the potato filling. Fry the rolls until they are browned on all sides. This dish can be eaten with ketchup or chutney.
7. Veggie Idli
A wonderful variation on the standard idli, the veggie idli is a sneaky but yummy way of incorporating vegetables into your child’s meals. To prepare the filling, combine vegetables and spices of your choice in oil and saute until they are cooked. Add the veggie filling to your pre-prepared idli batter and cook as per usual. You can serve this dish with sambar and chutney.
8. Semolina Dhokla
Dhoklas are a beloved treat in West India. Making them from suji or semolina makes them even healthier. Combine semolina with curd, turmeric, chilli powder, salt, green chillies, coriander and sugar to make a gooey batter. Boil water in a steamer and place the batter in a dhokla stand, allowing it to steam for about ten minutes. You can fry the dhoklas in mustard oil and curry leaves for a unique taste. Adding veggies and nuts will improve their nutritive quality.
9. Bread Cup Pizza
This is a great recipe to get your kids excited about lunchtime. For this, you need a muffin tray. Cut circles out of bread slices and place them in the tray. Mix a variety of chopped veggies with spices like thyme, salt, mustard and garlic and add them to the bread cups. Pour some grated cheese on top and bake the tray for ten minutes in an oven until the bread is brown-tinged. You can serve them with mayonnaise or tomato sauce.
10. Indian Pasta
This dish sounds complicated, doesn’t it? In fact, it is as easy to make as it is delicious. Cook pasta of your choice in the usual way. To prepare the sauce, combine mustard seeds, black gram, red lentils, onions and coriander leaves and fry in coconut oil until cooked. Then mix tomato puree with salt, garam masala, ginger, garlic, and fenugreek, boil the mixture for a few minutes and combine it with the previous concoction. Toss the pasta in the sauce, add a few drops of lime and serve the dish!
There are several ways to innovate in the kitchen. Play around with the kids' tiffin box ideas mentioned in this article, change ingredients, amounts or even methods of cooking to create unique variations that will keep your child happy, healthy and excited for their next meal.

Choosing the Perfect Baby Stroller
Baby strollers are a boon in disguise for parents who like to include their babies in their various outings and still want to retain the freedom of movement. By choosing the perfect baby stroller, parents can not only be assured of their baby’s safety and comfort but also find themselves more capable of performing various activities. However, in order to choose the best baby stroller, you need to understand your need and what exactly is available in the market.
A baby stroller is an essential equipment for child-care. While it may not be of much use in the very early months of a baby’s development, when parents prefer to carry their baby; it surely plays a significant role in later stages of child development. As a parent, you are responsible for choosing the perfect baby stroller for your little angel, and the choices are many! For information on the many types of strollers, and to understand the features and characteristics of each, check out this detailed Buying Guide to help you make a choice. In the interim, here's a shorter version to give you a brief understanding of all the variants of baby strollers available in the market and how to choose the best baby stroller out of them. There are five distinct types of baby strollers, these are:
1. Light-weight strollers
These are the most basic form of strollers available in the market at very inexpensive rates. Take a look at some of these. The foldable or adjustable nature of the slim frames and un-padded fabric seating of these strollers render them useful for only short durations.
2. Standard strollers
These strollers have a padded seating or reclined surface and typically have an umbrella or sun-shade outfitted into it. Much more robust and comfortable than light weight strollers, these can have a rather extended use. These strollers also have storage compartments or pockets at the back or side, wherein you can stock diapers or feeding bottles. If you think a standard stroller fits your requirement, you can select one here.
3. Jogging strollers
These strollers are very robustly built with shock absorbing mechanisms. They can be used for long walks, jogs, trekking and mountain climbing. Although, they may require accessories and add-ons for very young babies as they are primarily designed to hold older babies.
4. Car seat strollers and travel systems
These are the most commonly preferred strollers by parents who have to drive their babies to various places. Simple car seat strollers have a detachable car seat which can be mounted on the rear seat of the car while the stroller frame can be carried in the storage space, to reassemble later. The more complex travel-systems have larger and heavier car seats and frames, which can be used for older babies as well.
5. Multi-seat strollers
Double or triple seat strollers are also available in the market for seating twins, triplets or more than one children in the same stroller. These strollers can either have a tandem arrangement, i.e. the seats are arranged one behind the other or have side-by-side seating arrangement.
How to choose the best baby stroller
In order to choose the best possible stroller for your baby, you have to become more than an aware customer. In addition to checking out what is available in the market, you must understand your own need and usage too. The following tips can help you frame a checklist for baby stroller shopping:
Thoroughly research the different brands, models and variants of baby strollers available in the market. Try to gather as much information as possible online, before taking your baby out and taking some test-rides in actual strollers. After all, you want to invest in a stroller which your baby feels most comfortable in.
Determine your lifestyle requirements and the frequency or rigor with which you will use the stroller. If you will only use the stroller for brief market runs, then probably a light-weight or a standard size stroller is what you should be looking at. But if you have an active and physical lifestyle, then buying the jogging stroller can be more up your alley.
Map out a tentative budget based on the type of stroller that you want and the type of stroller that would best serve your needs. There is no point in spending more money than required as the life-cycle of this product is only as long as your baby learns to walk for extended periods.
Check and re-check the need for accessories and add-ons. If the overall cost for the stroller and its accessories exceeds your budget, it is better to look for a more comprehensive alternative in the market.
A baby stroller can be your baby’s favorite place in the world for it will take him places and let him enjoy the ride. By choosing the right stroller for your baby, you can his comfort and safety. You can also liberate yourself from the continuous need of carrying your baby and go back to enjoying some of your old hobbies like jogging and shopping. Read more
