Baby Sweating during Breastfeeding - Causes & Remedies
It is quite normal for a baby to sweat while feeding. However, if there is excessive sweating, it could be a sign of an underlying medical condition. Before you make that doctor's appointment to get the problem checked, read this article to understand the baby sweating phenomenon.
Reasons Your Baby Sweats While Breastfeeding
Usually, a baby sweats because of the natural process by which he releases excess body heat. The baby needs to cool off naturally because:
1. Close Connection
The close, skin-to-skin contact with the feeding mother increases the baby's body temperature.
2. Oodles of Energy
Suckling needs a lot of energy. The movement of the jaw while suckling is a kind of exercise for the baby and the baby sweats as a result of putting in the effort.
3. Hot Head
Have you also noticed the baby’s head sweating while breastfeeding? Many mothers tend to hold the baby in the same cradle position while feeding. Often, the mother holds the baby’s head in her palms in this position for a long time. This passes on more warmth from the palm, causing the baby’s head to sweat.
4. Too Many Layers
Sometimes, the baby is warm because of the many layers he is covered in. That may make him sweat.
5. Need for Fresh Air
The feeding room may be cramped, stuffy, and without ventilation. This warm environment makes the baby sweat more while breastfeeding.
However, there may be other reasons why your baby is sweating while breastfeeding - reasons that may require medical attention. We discuss that below.
Why Does the Baby's Head Sweat?
Sweating on the baby's head is caused by two main reasons:
Only the baby's head has active sweat glands while the rest of the body does not have any. So, the head sweats more than the rest of the body when the baby is feeling hot, especially while feeding.
The temperature of the baby's head is always higher than the rest of his body.
Is It a Sign of a Health Issue?
As new parents, one of the most natural concerns you may have is whether this is because of an underlying ailment. While mild sweating in babies is not usually a cause for concern, if you notice unnatural and excessive sweating on your baby's head, it may indicate a health problem. It could be any of the following:
1. Pulmonary Atresia
It is a form of congenital heart disease that blocks the flow of blood from the heart to the lungs and the baby does not get enough oxygen. This happens because the pulmonary valve, which regulates the blood flow from the heart to the lungs, has a malformation and does not open. Excessive sweating while breastfeeding is a key indicator of this ailment.
2. Hyperthyroidism
Excessive sweating can also be caused by an overactive thyroid gland or hyperthyroidism.
3. Infection With Fever
The baby can sweat excessively if there is some sort of infection, accompanied by fever.
4. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
In extreme cases, some babies have a higher risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). They could show signs of excessive sweating. While there is no conclusive evidence of this connection, according to a study, a majority of mothers whose babies suffered from SIDS said that they noticed that their babies would sweat too much.
5. Congestive Heart Failure
This ailment is caused by either a structural problem or a weak muscle in the heart. Hence, the baby’s heart is unable to supply enough blood to the rest of the body. This ailment is marked by excessive sweating as well.
Tips to Minimize Baby Sweating During Breastfeeding
Now that you know the reasons behind this, you can take measures to make life more comfortable for your bundle of joy. Here are some tips and tricks to do that:
Feed the baby in an airy room with moderate temperature. The room should ideally be neither too hot nor too cold.
During the summer season, you and your baby should both wear soft, cotton clothes while breastfeeding. Even during winters, don’t wear too many layers, heavy woollen clothes or clothes made of materials that may cause skin irritation and sweat. Try to wear light, soft, and warm woollens.
Keep the baby’s head bare to let it breathe while breastfeeding. Take off any cap or scarf from the baby's head before feeding. During winters, a cotton cap can be used to cover the baby's head.
If you are breastfeeding the baby in public, you should preferably use a cotton nursing cloak to let the air circulate well.
You and your baby should avoid polyester garments while feeding.
Feed your baby from both breasts. That will ensure that your baby is not in one fixed position the entire time during feeding, and this movement will reduce heat from trapping.
Do not assume that the baby is feeling cold all the time and overdress him/her in the process. Breastfeeding increases the baby’s body temperature as he is putting in an effort while suckling, and also because he is in close contact with another human body. Too many layers of clothes can add to the baby's discomfort.
You and your baby should not wear tight clothes during feedings. This will make both of you sweaty and uncomfortable.
When to Consult Your Doctor
You should consult your paediatrician if you notice these symptoms:
Breathing Problems: Your baby is breathing too hard, too slow, or in gasps.
Tiredness: You may notice constant lethargy or sleepiness, even during breastfeeding.
Aversion to Feeding: You baby may not be eager to feed at all.
Bluish Skin: In some rare cases, the baby skin may develop a bluish shade.
Sweating while feeding is usually not a problem in babies, but in some cases, it may be due to an underlying medical condition. If your baby's sweating does not stop or improve despite trying the above-mentioned methods, please consult your doctor immediately.

Restores normal blood pressure, creates space for the fetus to grow and extend its limbs, lengthens and straightens the back of the cervix and the vagina. Salamba Purvottanasana- Also known as Supported eastern intense stretch pose is an amazing posture which lifts the spine and the inner organs., lifts and widens the diaphragm and gives support to the heart as well. Provides space in the chest and allows the breath to be deep and smooth. Relieves nervous tension and helps the mind and body to calm down. This is a pose that should be avoided in the first trimester. It can be done in second and third trimester. This posture should be avoided in case of bleeding and white discharge.
5. Adho Mukha Shvanasana- This pose is also called Downward-facing dog pose. It should be practiced with ropes and a support for the head. During pregnancy standing asanas cause a lot of fatigue thus this asana removes fatigue. This pose helps in lowering blood pressure, relieves lower back pain, headaches, fatigue and palpitations. Lessens swellings in the legs and ankles. It increases blood supply to the brain, restores normal blood pressure and heartbeat, extends the spine and helps to strengthen the spinal muscles, eliminates shortness of breath. This posture can be performed in all three trimesters, as long as your comfortable.
6. Ardha Chandrasana- This pose is also called as the Half moon pose. This asana is great to be performed during pregnancy. It relieves from anxiety, nervous tension, fatigue. Reduces nausea and vomiting, it strengthens the spine and the pelvic muscles, it regulates blood pressure, provides space in the uterus and maintains proper kidney functions also checks bleeding during pregnancy. Pregnant ladies detected with toxemia should avoid practicing this posture. Otherwise it can be practiced in all three trimesters.
7. Parshvottanasana- This posture is also known as Intense chest stretch pose. This asana helps in improving hip, spine and shoulder flexibility, strengthens the abdominal muscles, legs and spine, refreshes brain, removes body stiffness, makes delivery easy, brings down high blood pressure. This asana can be practiced throughout pregnancy.
8. Prasarita Padottanasana- Also known as Intense leg stretch posture. During pregnancy there is a lot of discomfort and pain in the body. Thus this asana is of great during both menstruation and pregnancy. It relieves low and high blood pressure, anxiety, morning sickness during pregnancy, increase blood circulation, strengthens the hips, legs, knees and feet. Stretches and widens the pelvic region, improves digestion. When you feel exhausted or have symptoms of toxemia this pose should be strictly avoided. It can be practiced throughout pregnancy. In first trimester it should be practiced with concave back.
9. Ardha Halasana- This asana is also called as Half plough posture. This asana helps to strengthen and firm the spine, especially during the first trimester. Some women face the problem of vaginal bleeding in the initial stages of pregnancy, this pose is extremely beneficial to prevent the bleeding. Helps treat kidney problems, both as regular precaution and during pregnancy. Also helps in urinary problems. Practicing this pose will help you massage your energize your brain, neck, lungs, heart and abdomen. It can be practiced during all three trimesters.
10. Setu Bandha Sarvangasana- This pose is also called Bridge pose. This is one such pose that a pregnant woman shouldn’t skip practicing during her pregnancy as it helps to build courage. This posture helps in improving heart and kidney functions, removes heaviness, relieves headache, diabetes, back pain, hip pain, thyroid, fatigue, anxiety, depression. Also great for toning the kidneys. It helps in improving the blood circulation in the abdomen and the pelvis. Enhances flexibility and strength in the hips. This asana is very beneficial to cure urinary problems during pregnancy. Also reduces vaginal discharge. This posture can be practiced throughout pregnancy.
12. Supta Baddha Konasana- This asana is also known as Reclining bound angle pose. This posture is a relaxing and a healing variation of Baddha Konasana. This asana is a boon for pregnant ladies as it tones the urinary system, relieves pain, burning sensation, abdominal-pelvic discomfort. It also ensures an easy delivery. Life and death are the two sides of road everyone of us has to travel but how and when is all that matters! It is something not easy for me and may be others to talk and discuss. When everything around had an exciting color and you were playing with them at your best to make a colorful life, suddenly an evil eye had to prevail with darkness.Trust me nothing can be more painful when the person you love the most lies in an Operation Theater and doctor comes to you saying "its cancer" and the first thought that clicked was "everything gone"! If I go on discussing the cancer statistics here, it will be shocking but still not that important to you or if I say every 1 out of 3 females develop cancer, you may still imagine yourself in the remaining two! If not done until now, just google the statistics once. I do not want you to be scared but it is important to know because we don't know when we or someone close becomes the 3rd one! Now, think about them who have seen one of their closed ones suffering from this terminal illness. They know its scary; so scary that they would not want any person on this earth to suffer this! The question may sound an old one but forcing me again to ask why could not medical science find permanent cure for cancer or may be many such terminal diseases? How deeply it matters to me or may be many other families who have already seen this deadly cancer so close!
Can we do something to stop this? Not being a medical expert, I will not be the right person to tell what, when and how this disease occur and what we can do to avoid. Doctors can only guide well. Lot of information is easily available on net but who bothers to read until one suffers. But let me tell you the fear of losing your loved one makes you not less than an expert. Its first hand experience which teaches you many thing. You do not want to miss on any important information or any ray of hope and you almost do the best of research on the internet. Thanks to this internet era where most needed information is available just a click away. I would like to request everyone not to ignore even minor of the symptoms which may seem odd; a slightest of pain or even a simple fever. Women especially are an expert to avoid all this very easily; they take care of everyone in family but not their own body. Consult expert doctors for any doubt in mind. It may not stop these incurable diseases but if diagnosed at a right time, it may help doctors to add more years to life of your loved ones and you will not loose them soon!

Even the bald scalp which results as a side -effect from these therapies are sometimes shown as a style statement by them to boost up their own confidence and other cancer patients but everyone is not that strong. It really hurts to see such a face. The chemicals can surely hold those monsters inside for days, for months or may be years in some cases but not forever! They will make the body hollow from within slowly and gradually. But what is most important in such an endless pain, do not forget to keep that person happy through any means. Do what they like and avoid what they don't. Make them feel at comfort and reassure them that they will soon be alright. Pamper them, hold them close and give them a gentle touch to make them feel you are always there when they need you. They just need love, care, respect and someone to listen everything and anything they say even if they sound aggressive or rigid; its just the outflow of depression within, the outflow of pain they are going through or feeling withdrawn from life! Love them to the most and help them calm down during their most difficult times. The doctors keep trying till last breath to add years to their life but this way you will surely add life to the days left!
One day that person succumbs to this terminal illness. Now I am finding short of words. Hope you and all those families who have gone through this would understand better. The day when doctors hint you that the disease has gone terminal, you feel as if you could see God only once and ask "why me?". Somethings happen so fast that you are unable to accept it but you are forced to. You want to run away from the reality but you will be brought more closer. The good memories may fade and you are haunted by the worst you have seen. Everyone tries to explain that this is a part of life but is it so easy to accept? May be we start sounding selfish because we needed that person so much and want them to be alive at any cost. But what about the pain they were suffering from. What is right? The relief from pain forever or to live with that pain among your loved ones! I could not find answer till now.
Time plays strong and will take you out from however deep you have got stuck in life. Recall the good memories, do good to others, love people around you, believe in caring and sharing, spend quality time with your loved ones and live a happy life! A. I think it would be advisable for you to get an ultrasound done with your doctor that’s going to give you a clarity because if there is a pregnancy it would be visible at least at least that sack is visible if it’s a regular pregnancy so it would be advisable to have a test with your doctor
