Pneumococcal Vaccine for Babies
Pneumococcal bacteria cause serious diseases such as pneumonia and meningitis which develop within a span of few days of getting infected. This bacteria also cause serious ear infections in kids. The pneumococcal vaccine fights against multiple strains of these diseases causing bacteria. In the year 2010, the vaccine PCV13 was introduced, which fights against a greater number of these bacterial strains as compared to the previous vaccine. Let us have a look at these vaccines and when to receive the shots.

What is Pneumococcal Vaccine?
A pneumococcal vaccine is a vaccine that protects children against a harmful infection called the pneumococcal disease.
Pneumococcal Disease
This disease is caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. This bacteria either infects the people or resides in the throat of a person without causing any illness to him. These carriers will spread, despite not infecting the person carrying them, via the tiny droplets from their mouth or nose during breathing, coughing or sneezing. This bacteria causes infection in the middle ear, sinus cavities and the respiratory tract. Pneumonia injection for babies is being administered today to avoid these infections.
Why It is Essential for a Child to Get This Vaccine
It is recommended for all kids below the age of 2 years as well as adults older than 65 years of age to get the pneumococcal vaccine. Children are susceptible to harmful ear infections when affected by the pneumococcal bacteria. Diseases such as pneumonia and meningitis can develop within the affected host within a few days of being infected. It is thus essential for a child to get this vaccine. We’re sure you don’t want your child to get his pneumococcal shots at eight weeks, twelve weeks and fifteen months. As even one less dosage can pose a risk to your baby’s health, we recommend using our Vaccination Tracker. This tool will tell you exactly when you need to take your baby to the doctor. And with the ‘Reminder Set for’ feature, you can prevent your little one from a severe ear infection!
Who Should Have Pneumococcal Vaccine?
Older adults above the age of 65 years need to take this vaccine. With age, the immune system does not function as well as it used to and it becomes increasingly difficult to ward off the infections.
People who have a weak immune system need to take this vaccine. The occurrence of many diseases can weaken the immune system which then has a lower strength to fight against pneumococcal infections. People with heart disease, asthma, emphysema, diabetes, etc. are more susceptible to get pneumococcal infections as they have a weak immune system. Even those who have HIV, AIDS or have received organ transplants or chemotherapy have a weak immune system, putting them at a risk of being infected easily.
Those who smoke and drink heavily need to take this vaccine. Long-term smokers will have damaged the inner lining of the lungs. This inner lining of small hairs is the preventative tool for the germs and will not be effective when damaged. Those who drink heavily will have an immune system that is weakened. The white blood cells that defend against any infection will not function as effectively as in a person with a strong and healthy defence system.
Those who are recovering from some severe illness or surgery need to take this vaccine. At this stage, the immune system is busy helping you recover and it cannot be efficient in fighting off any other infections.
Who Should Not Have PCV Vaccine?
It is not required for every single person to have the PCV vaccine. An adult who is healthy and within the age group of 18 to 64 years can skip this vaccine. People who are allergic to the contents of this vaccine should also not take it. Consult a doctor for the same.
What Are the Recommended Doses and Schedule for Pneumococcal Vaccine for Babies?
This vaccine is recommended to be administered in series for young children and infants. The series consists of three doses, each taken at the ages of eight weeks, sixteen weeks, and twelve to fifteen months. Even if the babies have missed any of these shots, it is imperative to administer the vaccine to them. It is advised to consult with a doctor to confirm regarding the dosage interval and number.
How Often is the Vaccine Given to Babies?
The vaccine is administered three times to the babies at a scheduled interval. This is administered at the ages of eight weeks, sixteen weeks, and twelve to fifteen months.
What Are the Types of the Pneumococcal Vaccine?
There are two different types of pneumococcal vaccine, which are administered depending on the person’s age as well as the health.
Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine(PCV)
Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine or PCV: PCV is administered to babies under the age of two years. The PCV13 vaccine for infants protects them against 13 types of harmful bacteria that are responsible for causing pneumonia.
Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine or PPV: This vaccine is administered to adults who are 65 years and above. It is also given to those who are at a high risk as a result of some long-term sickness or health problems. The PPSV23 vaccine protects adults against 23 types of harmful bacteria that are responsible for causing pneumonia.
Children above the age of 2 years can be administered with the PPV vaccine, if they are susceptible to the infection, although it is rare that the vaccine does not work on the babies. PCV1 vaccine for infants do not work against all the types of pneumonia-causing bacteria, but they ward off 30 or more severe and common types.
How is the Vaccine Given?
PPV is administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly and the PCV is given intramuscularly. The site of injection for babies and young children is in the anterolateral thigh region specifically in the vastus lateralis muscle. The site of injection for adults is the deltoid muscle in the shoulder region. The needle length is chosen depending on the age of the person who is receiving the shot.
How Well do PCV Vaccines Works
The PCV vaccine is said to be 50-70% efficient in preventing the pneumococcal infection.
Side Effects of Pneumococcal vaccine in Babies
As in the case of almost all the vaccines, the pneumococcal vaccine also causes side effects which are mild. These side effects include:
Lowered appetite and tiredness
A mild temperature
Redness or swelling at the site where shot was administered
Other than minor allergic reactions, no major side effects occur upon taking this vaccine.
Make Sure Your Doctor Knows the Following Things Before Giving the Vaccine
If your baby has been sick or has experienced high fever
Any previous allergic reactions to a medicine or vaccine
If you baby has haemophilia or bleeds more than normal
If it has been pointed out to you that your child has a weak immune system
What to Do if Your Child Has a Reaction to the Vaccine?
Call your doctor or take your child to the hospital immediately. Inform the doctor regarding the details of the vaccination and the allergic reaction. Look for any such reaction for a few hours after the administration of the vaccine. These extreme allergic reactions tend to occur within minutes to a few hours after being vaccinated. You can check for weakness, fast heartbeat, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, wheezing or hoarseness, hives and, swelling of the throat.
What to Do If One Pneumococcal Vaccine is Missed?
In cases when a pneumococcal vaccine dose has been missed either by an adult or a child, consult with the doctor and find out when the course can be completed. If the kids are below 1 year of age and he/she has missed a shot, they can catch up by taking the remaining number of doses with a gap of two months in between each shot. If the child is between 1 to 2 years of age and has missed one shot, they can be administered with a single shot of the vaccine. If the child is between 2 to 5 years of age and has missed one shot, they might also require a single shot of the vaccine. This specific shot is recommended only if the child is highly susceptible to the pneumococcal infection.
When to Use Booster Doses of the Pneumococcal Vaccine?
Booster doses of the pneumococcal vaccine are given when a person has a kidney condition that is chronic or when the spleen does not function effectively. These booster doses are given once every five years. The booster doses are given as the antibody levels against the pneumococcal bacteria goes down with time.
Pneumococcal infections used to cause about thirteen thousand blood infections, greater than seven hundred meningitis cases, and nearly five million cases of ear infections in kids lesser than 5 years of age, every year. These statistics are according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and before the times of pneumococcal vaccination. Today, this vaccine is highly effective in preventing the disease in more than 90% of the population who are susceptible to it.

6 Easy and Fun Picnic Games for Kids
Picnics are a great way to spend the weekend with the family. It encourages everyone to experience nature and get some fresh air. While picnics can have a completely different meaning for grown-ups, kids are active and won't be happy just sitting around. For this reason, we’ve come up with a few fun games that can not only help keep them entertained but also tire them out.
Picnic Games for Children to Keep Them Engaged and Entertained
You can expect a lot of loud laughter and giggles. Here are some outdoor games for kids that you could have on your picnic include
1. Relay Race
Are your kids just bursting with energy? Use this game to tire them out relatively quickly. Try doing this just before you are leaving so that they feel they have done a lot before they come back home.
Your Child Will Need
A baton (this can be substituted for a large stick)
At least four players
A stopwatch
How To Play
Set up a start, a middle and a finish line.
If there are four children, make them into two teams with two members each.
Tell the children from the teams to place one member each at the start and middle points.
When you shout “GO!”, the children from the start line need to run with the baton/stick and pass it to the team member in the middle.
Once the second team member gets the baton, he has to reach the finish line.
The one that reaches the finish line the quickest, his team wins!
This can be repeated a couple of times.
2. Slipper Kick
This is a game a fun game that can be played on casual picnic days.
Your Child Will Need
Slippers
Measuring tape
How To Play
Choose a location which has ample free area. Make sure there are no people nearby.
Ask the kids to throw their slippers as far as they can using only their feet.
Use a measuring tape to see who can fling it the farthest.
3. Pass the Water
This game can be played when there are more than 10 people.
Your Child Will Need
2 Buckets per team
A large source of water
How To Play
Make teams of at least 5 kids each and make them stand in such a way that their shoulders are touching.
The objective of the game is to pass water from one bucket to the other. However, the catch is that they must use only their hands to transfer the water.
The water must be passed by hand from one team member to another before it reaches the second bucket. If any of the team members does not help, the whole team is disqualified.
4. Frisbee
This is a great game to play for smaller picnics. This can be played with two people or more, and if you have a dog, it becomes a bonus!
Your Child Will Need
Frisbee
Obstacle-free area
How To Play
For two players, they need to stand at a slight distance from each other. The distance can be increased if the kids are experienced frisbee players.
For more than two players, make sure that all the players are equidistant from each other. For instance, three kids can stand in a triangle; four can stand in the form of a square and so on.
If you have a pet dog and the picnic spot is pet-friendly, you can bring him along! If he catches the frisbee from the kids, they will have to chase him to get it back.
5. Book Cricket
Why play regular cricket when you can play book cricket? This is one of the better picnic games for kids under 5 as it preps your kids up for regular cricket. Most kids under 5 would not be able to hold a bat, and this is a good solution for that.
Your Child Will Need
Large Notebook
Table tennis ball
How To Play
The rules are similar to actual cricket except for some minor changes.
There is no sixer that can be hit. Create a boundary such as surrounding trees beyond which if the ball goes, it becomes out. This way, other people at the picnic spot are not disturbed. The difficulty level of the game can be increased by shortening the boundary to a smaller distance.
If the picnic spot as grass, then the ball cannot be bounced. This way, you can watch on the kids without them venturing too far.
6. Scavenger Hunt
If you’re looking for picnic games for kids under 10, a scavenger hunt works better as it bound to keep them occupied.
Your Child Will Need
List
Bag
Watch
How To Play
This would entail dividing the children into equally sized groups. Make sure that there is some equality in their temperament. This means that the bigger kids can’t be bunched up together.
Hand over a list of the items to be recovered to each of the groups along with the bag. The items can be placed by you beforehand. Another approach is to put items on the list that might require some searching. For example, you could put a dried leaf which is exactly 6 centimetres as an item.
Give proper instructions to them about not destroying public property.
Since everyone has a phone these days, ask them to take a video/picture of the object. This can help as the item may inadvertently fall out of the bag.
Give them a stipulated amount of time to look for the items on the list. The team that is able to recover the most objects
Games during picnics are fun and is a good opportunity for kids to move around. Make sure that you don’t make the rules or points too complicated. Keep it simple, and they’re sure to have a blast!

What Do Age Recommendation Labels on Toys Mean
Age recommendations are guidelines offered to parents or gift-givers to help them choose a toy that is suitable for a baby of a certain age. The guidelines are based on the following factors:
Safety first. Some of the toys that are safer for older children are not suitable for toddlers, for instance, toys that have small parts that can be easily swallowed. Children younger than 3 years old tend to put things in their mouth often, therefore all toys are designed to prevent this.
A thorough knowledge of the various stages of development of children goes into designing toys. Toys for babies mostly involve grabbing, shaking and squeezing to build motor skills. A 6-month-old would just bang a bunch of building blocks together while a 2-year-old might want to stack them, older ones might want to build things and so on.
Observations of how children use the toys are done by the developers by testing them with real children to see how they appeal o different age groups. They also observe for how they play with the toys and pick out design flaws in them.
Inputs from parents and children go into making toys for different age groups. They need to be designed with the entire household in mind and other parameters that affect the rest in the house.
The history of similar is taken into account when building a new one or upgrading an existing toy.
Safety Tips for Babies
Toys for infants 3 months of age while being fun should also be safe. Since they can also be hazardous here are a few tips:
Choose toys that are well designed, whether you’re buying new ones or using a toy passed down from older siblings; ensure they haven’t worn out in ways that can be dangerous. Pay attention to stitches and seams on stuff toys and that they are not damaged. Parts on other toys should be securely attached and has no sharp edges.
Avoid picking toys that have a chord or a string that’s longer than 12 inches. Long chords can wrap around the neck and strangle babies in sleep or during play.
Watch out for cheap plastics that can be toxic. Certain manufacturers could add chemicals such as plasticizers to make toys more flexible, these chemicals can be harmful.
Balloons and other rubbery sheets that can break into tiny bits are a choking hazard and should be avoided.
How to Choose Best Toys for Your 3 Month Old Baby
At three months your baby can grasp things and reach for what interests them. Here are some tips on how to choose good toys for them.
Lightweight rattlers are ideal toys for kids of this age. They are colourful and make plenty of noise. Look for rattlers made out of good quality materials and without small parts that can be swallowed.
Soft stuffed animals and dolls make good toys for 3 months baby girl. Babies start developing an attachment to a plush animal or toy and it’s important you buy them a good one which can last for years.
Teething rings with rattlers are a good choice for this age. Soon they’ll have sore gums and gnawing on a soft but firm rubber ring is soothing.
Squeaky rubber toys that squeak while being easy to grip is a popular toy among babies of this age group. They can be taken anywhere and are perfect during their tub time.

A. after 8 weeks or after proper healing of the wounds. if there is no relief it is better you see your doctor for proper examination particularly physical examination if there is need for doing investigations to find out the problem and treatment ok

A. Hello mam! If it is due to colic pain /gas, it is common in newborns. Make sure that you burp your baby after every feed. Don't feed just before your baby is to sleep. Make a routine like feed, play and sleep. Burp inbetween feedings. Colic pain will stop automatically at 5 or 6 months. So don't worry. Happy parenting!
