Dizziness During Pregnancy
Feeling lightheaded, dizzy and faint at times during the day is a normal occurrence during pregnancy. As the body undergoes changes to accommodate a baby, the variation in blood pressure, sugar levels and hormones causes you to feel dizzy every now and then.
Pregnancy And Dizziness
Feeling faint and nauseous can begin as early as two weeks after conception or start after two months. Dizziness, accompanied by morning sickness, and nausea at other times during the day can be an indicator of pregnancy. The body’s physiological changes can cause women to get disoriented and feel a sense of vertigo that makes expectant women feel like they’re about to fall or faint at times. The cause for dizziness during early pregnancy depends on how far along the mother is, and it ranges from feeling light headed to fainting.
Is It Normal To Feel Dizzy During Pregnancy?
Yes, it is absolutely normal. Dizziness affects nearly 75% of pregnant women in varying degrees. It is a common feature during the first trimester but can continue throughout the pregnancy in some women.
Causes
The cause for dizziness varies throughout pregnancy depending on the stage of pregnancy.
Dizziness during early pregnancy is caused due to the high levels of hormones in the body as it prepares to increase blood supply to the expanding circulatory system. The hormone progesterone dilates the blood vessels which causes the blood pressure to drop and make you feel dizzy. Dizziness is also made worse if you have anemia, nausea, frequent vomiting and dehydration
As the pregnancy progresses, there are more fluids in your system (including blood) to nourish the developing baby. This can cause an increase in the blood pressure which leads to dizziness and headaches.
In the third trimester, actions such as prolonged sitting or lying down cause the weight of the baby to put pressure on a large vein in the right-hand side of the body called the inferior vena cava. This vein transports blood from the lower limbs and a pressure on it restricts the blood flow making you dizzy.
External temperature and overheating can add to the problems as presence of the baby increases the normal body temperature by one degree.
Dizziness can be due to uneven blood sugar levels caused by conditions such as gestational diabetes. On rare occasions, dizziness might be a sign of a more serious problem such as bleeding from the placenta or an ectopic pregnancy.
Things To Do When You Suddenly Feel Dizzy
You can do the following when you feel dizzy:
When you feel dizzy, sit down to avoid a fall. If you can, sit with your head between your knees. Also, sit down or get up slowly; sudden movements worsen dizziness.
If you have a chance to lie down, do so on your left side. This increases the blood supply to your brain and makes you feel better.
Dizziness can also be due to low blood sugar if you have gone a while without eating. Get a quick healthy snack and top it off with some water or fresh fruit juice to boost your energy levels.
Waves of dizziness can often happen to many women during pregnancy. The best thing to do would be to stop what you are doing, sit or lie down and wait for it to pass.
Remedies To Alleviate Dizziness
To reduce dizziness during pregnancy:
Avoid quick movements like getting up too fast or springing up out of the bed.
Do not lie on your back for too long. Change positions often and try to lie more on your left side.
Eat regularly and stay hydrated. Substitute sugar-rich foods with healthy snacks.
Avoid overheating that happens when you take a hot water bath or spend time in crowded places.
Go easy on workouts. Stressing yourself can cause you to overheat or hyperventilate which can both lead to dizziness.
Is Feeling Dizzy Harmful For Your Pregnancy?
Dizziness is not harmful on its own. Light headedness which can lead to fainting can be dangerous as there is a chance you might fall and injure yourself. Follow the above-mentioned procedures when feeling dizzy.
When To Get The Help From Your Doctor?
Dizziness, once in a while, from heat or movement or hunger is normal in pregnancy. However, if it is frequent and coupled with symptoms such as severe headaches, blurred vision, palpitations, impaired speech, numbness, chest pain, shortness of breath, tingling and vaginal bleeding, immediate medical help should be sought. In early pregnancy if dizziness is followed by abdominal pain and a racing pulse, it could be an indication of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. It is a medical emergency and should be dealt with immediately.
Conclusion: Learning to recognise your symptoms early on and taking precautionary measures can help reduce your dizziness. If that does not work, it is time to call your doctor and get it checked. Read more

Can Long-Term Use of Birth Control Pills Make it Difficult to Conceive?
Birth control pills are one of the most preferred options of contraceptives that are used by women all over the world. These pills are not only used by women for prevention of pregnancy sometimes but also for curing PCOS, endometriosis, acne, irregular menstrual cycle, PMS and other such issues. However, many of you, who may have been taking this pill regularly or have been taking this pill for a while, may wonder whether these pills can make conception difficult or take a toll on your fertility? Well, if you are interested to know, this post will help you gain some insight on the topic.
Can Birth Control Pills Cause Infertility?
No, taking any kind of birth control pill does not affect the fertility of a woman. Also, there is no scientific evidence available that finds a direct relation between prolonged use of birth control pills and infertility in women. But it has been observed that women who have been using birth control pills for a long time experienced a disruption in their menstrual cycle for a few months after they stop taking the pills. However, this condition of the disrupted menstrual cycle or post-pill amenorrhea usually happens due to some other underlying medical conditions and not because of taking the birth control pills. On the contrary, taking birth control pills have been found to have positive effects on fertility because prolonged usage of pills protects women from the dangers of uterine and ovarian cancer. It has also been proved that taking pills help women to fight abnormal menstrual bleeding caused due to endometriosis. Taking birth control pills also reduces the chances of ectopic pregnancies in women. Therefore, if you wish to know will the pill affect fertility later in life? Well, the fertility may not get affected by taking the pill, but it may get affected because of some other underlying issues.
How Can Birth Control Pills Negatively Impact Your Long-term Fertility?
Any kind of hormonal contraceptives that a woman takes may have its impact on her body. Although it may not impact the fertility, it may fiddle with the long-term fertility of a woman. Here are some ways in which taking birth control pills may negatively impact the long-term fertility of a woman.
1. It May Cause Hormonal Imbalance
Women may sometimes be prescribed birth control pills to overcome the problem of hormonal imbalance. However, prolonged use of the pills may hamper the natural production of progesterone and estrogens in the body. The synthetic production of hormones in the body can also fiddle with the natural hormone production and thus this may sometimes lead to fertility issues.
2. It May Disrupt the Menstrual Cycle
It has been observed that women who take these pills experience longer menstrual cycles and may have a shorter luteal phase, after stopping them. However, usually, these disruptions in the cycles may better approximately after nine months of stopping the pills.
3. It May Make Changes in the Cervical Mucus
Healthy cervical mucus helps the sperms to travel through the vagina and cervix to reach to the egg to fertilize it. However, taking birth control pills for longer periods may thicken the cervical mucus. The thicker cervical mucus may hamper the easy mobility of the sperms and thus may cause hindrances in the process of fertilization and cause problems in conception.
4. It May Cause Disruption in Ovulation
The birth control pills help release synthetic hormones in the body, which hamper the process of ovulation. However, this is not how the normal female body functions. Rather during the normal menstrual cycle, the body releases the hormones that prepare the follicle for ovulation, which may eventually lead to a pregnancy. However, when a woman takes the pill, it disrupts the natural flow of events, and the prolonged usage of the pills may make the ovaries not do its job properly. This kind of situations may give rise to fertility issues in women.
5. It May Make Changes in the Uterine Lining
It is important for a woman to have a healthy uterine lining in order to let the fertilized egg to plant itself on it. However, women who take birth control pills for longer periods of time may experiences changes in their uterine lining, which means their uterine lining becomes unreceptive for embryo implantation. This happens because the release of synthetic hormones in the body affects the natural hormonal production that is required to maintain a healthy uterine lining that supports implantation.
As per a study conducted on women who used birth control pills, it had been observed that approximately 20 percent of women became pregnant within one month after they stopped taking the pill. And approximately 80 percent of women conceived within one year after they stopped taking the birth control pill. However, there are some studies available that take into consideration the long-term risks for women who took birth control pills for an extended period of time.
If you have stopped taking your pills, your periods must have become normal. But if you are not able to conceive, you must be thinking that it is because of taking birth control pills. Well, that may not be the case because infertility may not result from taking birth control pills. There are many reasons that may cause infertility in both men and women.
If you have been facing problems in conceiving after you stopped taking birth control pills, it is suggested that you take your doctor’s advice on the matter and know what may be causing the problem.

A Simple Home Care Routine for Glowing and Healthy Skin
Flawless complexion we all desire but very few of us have. A few are lucky because of genetics and a few follow a disciplined routine to get that dewy glowing skin. Most mothers would say we do not have time for taking care of our skin but when you have ingredients right in of your kitchen cupboard then time should really not be an issue.
Water with Turmeric: Have a glass of water in the morning with a pinch of turmeric. Keep it at your bedside at night so that when you wake up, that's the first thing you have.
Curd: We all have heard enough of mixing multiple things and making a pack but honestly curd applied to clean your skin is enough to give you that glowy dewy skin. Apply curd on your face every morning and exfoliate your skin with the same and let the curd pack remain on your skin for 5 minutes before rinsing it.
Milk: Before sleeping dip cotton in milk and gently wipe your face and sleep. You don't need to wash it and if you still want to rinse let it stay on your face for ten minutes and rinse with cold water.
Dry Brushing: Before you head for a shower take a soft bristle brush and run it in a circular motion on your face for 2 minutes but keep in mind it has to be a soft facial brush (use a soft bristle toothbrush just in case you do not have a facial brush).
Exercise: Exercise, be it walk/yoga/gym is beneficial for your skin as it opens up your skin capillaries which keep it supple. Thus a bare minimum of half an hour devoted every day to your choice of exercise will take you a step closer to your glowing healthy skin.
Eating Healthy: The parallel to be drawn here is similar to putting unrefined adulterated petrol in your car and it's guaranteed that your car will stall and give you problems. Similarly, if you put junk food into your system and refrain from eating healthy foods such as greens, pulses, fruits, fibre-rich foods, it will show on your skin apart from your body in forms of acne/sebaceous gland boils on your skin.
Rice Water: Take half cup of rice and boil it with three cups of water. Once the rice is cooked, use rice water as a toner. Put it in a spray bottle and keep it in the fridge and whenever during the day you get time or as and when you open the fridge, just spray it on your face.
Steam Your Face: If you have a steamer that's wonderful. Once a week while you have time just steam your face and let the pores open up. Wipe your face and immediately use ice cubes on your face for glowing skin. In case you don't have a steamer at home, use a hot towel on your face.
These simple home care routines are for all skin types to follow so that you can achieve glowing skin and can see beautiful results in just three weeks.

Potential Complications of Twin Pregnancy
Have you been told that a multiple pregnancy is risky for both the mother and the children? Well, let go of your apprehensions, as in most cases, the expecting mother will give birth to healthy babies and she will stay healthy herself as well. The odds of having identical twins is one in every 350 or 400 births.
By high-risk pregnancies, gynaecologists mean that these pregnancies require the mother to be a little more careful and needs more monitoring. This is the secret to avoiding all sorts of complications that may arise.
Some complications are more common in the case of multiple or twin pregnancies than in normal pregnancies, the most prominent one being that you will be delivering premature babies. Though other complications are rare, it is important that expecting mothers know about them, as these complications need close monitoring and medical attention.
Why Twin and Multiple Pregnancies are a Concern?
A multiple or a twin pregnancy may put your health at risk. The chances of developing gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and other pregnancy-related complications are higher in the case of multiple pregnancies due to the greater load on the mother’s body and immune system with two or three babies.
Complications
The chances of complications are higher when the twins share the same placenta. Dichorionic diamniotic twins complications (twins not sharing the same placenta) are not that severe as compared to monochorionic diamniotic twins complications (twins sharing the same placenta).
Here are some twin pregnancy risks you need to watch out for-
High Blood Pressure - A rise in the level of the blood pressure is 2-3 times more likely in you if you are expecting twins (or more babies) than you if you expecting one.
Preeclampsia - Preeclampsia is another complication that you might have to face in the case of multiple pregnancies. When you are expecting more than one baby, the strain on your placenta is more compared to a single baby.
If you are expecting twins, your doctor will closely monitor your blood pressure levels and test your urine to diagnose preeclampsia symptoms, if any, at antenatal appointments. The doctor might also prescribe aspirin-types drugs every day after you complete twelve weeks of pregnancy to reduce your blood pressure levels and prevent preeclampsia. The screening is advised in the following cases-
If this is your first pregnancy
If you are above 40 years of age
If your BMI is 35 or more than that
If there is a history of preeclampsia in your family
If you became pregnant after a gap of 10 years
Gestational Diabetes
The risk of gestational diabetes is also higher with twin or multiple pregnancies. The doctor will check your urine to know your blood sugar levels. A glucose tolerance test will be prescribed if your doctor suspects that you have diabetes.
Anaemia
Your iron levels may drop due to an increased level of blood flow, leading to anaemia. You need to be extra careful about your iron levels as the drop will make you feel tired. Your doctor will recommend iron supplements. However, make sure you include vegetables that are rich in iron in your diet as well. Anaemia is more common in mothers expecting more than one baby. Your doctor will closely monitor you and also give your more blood tests if required.
Obstetric cholestasis
This rare condition is caused by oestrogen and progesterone hormones and it affects your liver. When you are expecting twin (or more) babies, the secretion levels of these pregnancy hormones go up and lead to obstetric cholestasis. Symptoms include severe itching.
Placental disruption
This is a serious condition that happens when your placenta detaches from the uterine wall before the delivery. This is one of the most serious twin pregnancy complications the third trimester poses.
The IVF twin pregnancy complications are the same as normal pregnancy.
Complications That Can Affect the Babies
Here are some of the complications which may affect the babies in a twin pregnancy. -
Foetal restriction
Retarded growth of the babies, where one or both the babies do not grow as much as they should and this can lead to complications both during birth and labour. However, this is something that you do not have to worry about much. Most twins are born small but they are healthy. Your doctor will conduct regular scans to monitor the growth of your twins and this would help in detecting all kinds of problems.
TTTS or twin to twin transfusion syndrome
This happens when one baby shares the other baby’s blood supply. The condition is rare but can lead to serious problems. This is a common complication among monochorionic diamniotic twins and it affects as much as 15% of the identical twins. One of the babies gets too much blood while the other gets much less than what is required. As a result, the baby donating blood is smaller and looks anaemic too due to the lack of blood. A higher volume of blood strains the heart of the other baby and this can lead to a heart failure.
Entangled umbilical cords
Monoamniotic Monochorionic twins are twins with entangled umbilical cords. This is a rare condition which prevents the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the developing babies.
Congenital Abnormalities
The risk of congenital abnormalities in the babies is more in the case of multiple pregnancies.
What are the Chances and Risks of Premature Delivery?
The risk of preterm labour and miscarriage is also higher and so are the chances and risks of premature delivery. However, it is hard to say how much higher this risk exactly is. This is because early miscarriages are hardly easily identified. If you do face a premature delivery, you can’t take your babies home immediately. The extent for which they need to stay in the hospital will depend on how premature they are.
In the cases of twins, full-term is 37 weeks. More than 50% of the twins are born before the 37th week and less than 10% are born before the 32nd week.
What are the Chances of Having a Miscarriage?
The chance of miscarriage with twins are higher compared to when you are carrying a single child.
It is common for miscarriages to happen during the initial twelve weeks, whether it is single or multiple pregnancies.
Chances and Risks of Stillbirth
The risks of stillbirth are higher in cases of multiple pregnancies. Losing the baby in the first month after the birth is also possible.
In case of multiple pregnancies, the risk of the complications including stillbirth increases just after the completion of the 38th week. This is the reason why doctors suggest induction or a caesarean if you do not deliver the twins by the 38th week of your pregnancy.
The rate of stillbirth is more in the case of identical twin babies who share the same placenta. The mother is often advised to deliver earlier, by the 37th week, in such cases.
Vanishing Twin Syndrome
In many cases, one baby is lost and if you lose the baby within the first trimester, the development of the other baby is usually not affected. The lost foetus is reabsorbed completely, a condition known as vanishing twin syndrome, and you might not experience any symptoms. The percentage range of this syndrome is 21-30 percent, meaning it is quite common.
Preventing Complications of Twin or Multiple Pregnancies
Your behaviour or lifestyle has very little to do as far as multiple or twin pregnancy is concerned. Getting the early confirmation that you are carrying twins or triplets will give your doctor the chance to prevent and treat all twin or triplets pregnancy risks that may arise.
Always stay hydrated and well-nourished. Never miss even a single prenatal appointment with your gynaecologists and make sure to abide by all the instructions given by your healthcare provider. Keep the following tips in mind to prevent any sort of complications.
Tips to Remember When Pregnant with Twins
The odds of conceiving twins cannot be determined exactly in any case.
Keep the following tips in mind to keep yourself healthy with multiple pregnancies-
Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial in the case of twin pregnancies. The weight you can gain before 20 weeks is crucial. Your weight should be such that it reduces the risk of a low birth weight and premature birth.
Your iron levels are most likely to drop as the blood flow increases in the case of twin pregnancies. This can lead to anaemia and this will be harmful to both you and the babies. Take iron supplements regularly, after consulting your doctor.
Going for antenatal appointments is very important. Your doctor will conduct regular check-ups and ensure that you and your babies are healthy.
Conclusion: Knowing the risks and complications of multiple pregnancies will go a long way in alleviating any concerns you may have about carrying multiples. Stay aware and do make sure you speak to your doctor if you are worried at any point in your pregnancies. Read more

What Is Computer Vision Syndrome?
In this time and age, many of us have jobs that require us to stare at computer screens for unimaginable hours. And as we sit in front of the computer - staring at it (and working on it) for hours at a time, it puts a strain on our eyes, which leads to severe eye complications. Eye problems that are caused because of the continuous use of computers are collectively called computer vision syndrome. It has been seen that most of us show at least a few symptoms of CVS, if not all. And CVS can affect not just adults but even children who use a computer, tablet, or mobile for long periods of time.
What Is Computer Vision Syndrome?
Computer vision syndrome, which is also known as digital eye strain, is a condition that occurs when the eyes are strained due to the use of computers for long hours. People who use computers, tablets, smartphones, or read e-books for endless hours can suffer from computer vision syndrome.
What Causes Computer Vision Syndrome?
Computer Vision Syndrome (CVC) can be caused due to several factors. Some of the common ones are mentioned below.
Working on the computer, using tablets or smartphones for long hours
Not blinking the eyes often while using gadgets
Not enough light or poor light in the room
Incorrect sitting posture
Having weak eyesight
Not enough distance between the eyes and the screen
Old age
What Are the Symptoms of CVS?
You may notice the following symptoms if you have computer vision syndrome:
Blurred vision
Double vision
Dryness of the eye
A burning sensation in the eyes
Irritation in the eyes
Redness in the eyes due to itchiness
Headaches, nausea, and dizziness
Pain in the neck and shoulder region
How Is it Diagnosed?
Although digital eye strain or CVS is not a very serious condition, it can cause some uneasiness and pain. Therefore, getting it diagnosed by an ophthalmologist is important. Below mentioned are some tests and procedures that the medical practitioner will conduct to rule out digital eye strain.
The doctor will first ask the patient a few questions regarding the pre-existing eye problem, medicines that the patient may be taking on a daily basis, and the number of hours that the patient spends working at the computer every day.
After a thorough assessment, the doctor will conduct a visual test using the Snellen chart to get an idea of the patient’s visual acuity. This will help the doctor understand and find out the reason behind the patient’s eye strain.
The doctor will then examine the patient’s eyes by dilating the pupil and observing the eyes through an ophthalmoscope; this will help him determine any other eye problems. He may also conduct refraction tests to prescribe power glasses, if required, and to counsel the patient on how digital eye strain can be avoided. Sometimes, he may even ask the patient to take blood tests to rule out certain underlying health issues which may be causing CVS.
The last test is an eye focus test. As the name suggests, this test is done to understand and determine the focus of the eyes and to assess the movement of the eyes while focussing on an object.
How to Treat Digital Eye Strain
Although digital eye strain or CVS is not considered a serious condition, it can pose problems in the long run if left untreated. Therefore, here are some ways to cure computer vision syndrome.
Make sure after working on the computer or using a digital gadget for two hours or more, you give rest to your eyes by closing them for 15-20 minutes.
Follow the 20:20:20 rule to provide relief to your eyes. Looking away from the screen of the computer or the digital device after every 20 minutes for 20 seconds and focusing at an object which is 20 feet away will keep eye strain at bay.
If the text you are reading on the computer or on your smartphone seems small, increase the font size. This will prevent eye strain.
Avoid glaring lights on the computer screen. Change the position of your desk or yourself in order to avoid it. Use a screen glare filter to avoid straining your eyes while using the computer.
Placement of the computer screen should be such that when you look at it, it is 4-5 inches below your eye level.
Right placement of the computer screen is the key to avoid eye strain. Therefore, place it at least 20 -28 inches away from the eye.
While working on the computer, keep blinking your eyes.
If required, you can use eye drops to lubricate your eyes. However, ask the eye doctor before using it.
If you have an eye infection or allergy, consult a doctor immediately.
If you have dry eyes, take prescribed medicine for an increase in tear production.
Prevention Tips
CVS can be prevented by following a few simple tips. Listed below are a few tips for computer vision syndrome prevention.
Put an anti-glare or matte screen filter against your computer screen, tablet, or smartphone.
After every half an hour or an hour, take a break and look away from the screen.
Use lubricating eye drops prescribed by an eye doctor if you suffer from dry eyes.
In order to keep your eyes moist, place a humidifier near the screen.
Remember to wear glasses if you have been prescribed power glasses.
Practice eye exercises every day.
Eat foods that are rich in beta carotene and Vitamin A.
Consult an eye specialist every six months.
FAQs
1. Who Is at a Greater Risk of Suffering From CVS?
