It will also instil in them a love for books and reading, which will increase their IQ going forward. However, parents also have to play an active role in introducing these learning books to their toddlers. Once the parents join in enthusiastically, the child will also follow suit and start involving himself more in the reading or colouring activity. You can be the starting point for him.

Pap Smear Test in Pregnancy - Reasons, Safety and Risks
Pregnancy brings with itself a barrage of tests and checkups that are necessary to keep a track of your health as well as your baby’s. One of the tests that many women hear of and wonder about its necessity is the pap smear test. Before directly opting to take one, it is important to know what the test is really about and whether you need it or not.
What Is Pap Test and Who Needs It?
A Pap test checks the area of the uterine cervix for any anomalies. There are a bunch of cells that cover the outer area of the cervix. These cells meet together at a single location called as the transformation zone. This zone has a higher susceptibility to causing a growth of abnormal cells as well. In the Pap test, a sample is taken from this area and checked under a lab slide for irregularities. If there are any present, these could signify conditions such as dysplasia or even cancer of the cervix.
Most women are advised to undergo a test every 3 years once they are 21 years old. Women over 30 should get it done once in 5 years.
Why Do You Need to Include Pap Smear in Routine Prenatal Care?
The Pap test takes cell samples from an extremely important area of the uterine cervix. If any irregularities or abnormalities are present, these can help in detection of any inflamed cells, infected regions or, in extreme cases, the presence of cervical cancer. Although cancer does not aggravate during pregnancy or affect the child, other infections can definitely do so. These, if detected in prenatal care itself, can help mitigate various risks.
Is Pap Safe in Pregnancy?
Since pap smear tests involve the cervix and may result in bleeding, the question of 'can you have a paper smear while pregnant?' arises in most pregnant women.
The area from where the cell samples are taken, and the area where the baby resides, has a lot of space between them. Therefore, the procedure does not affect the baby at all. The bleeding that might occur is absolutely normal and stops after some time.
When Is The Test Scheduled in The Course of Pregnancy?
Most doctors recommend getting the test done within the first two visits of the pregnancy, which is primarily around the first trimester. In case it is skipped, then the doctor might insist on it during the second trimester if no previous records of the tests exist. If you have conducted a test within the last 5 years or so, the doctor may choose to avoid the test altogether at his discretion. If you’re too late in the pregnancy, then the doctor will do the test post delivery, since the hormones in late pregnancy can cause the result to be a false positive.
How Is Pap Smear Test Done?
The doctor will ask you to undress and lie on the table with your legs on the stirrups. This gives a clear view of the cervix. Then, a medical brush termed as the speculum is lubricated, to take a good look at the cervical region. Next, a tiny brush is used to gather a small sample of cells from the transformation area. Try to remain relaxed so as to experience as little discomfort as possible.
What Does Pap Smear Examination Result Mean?
The pap test primarily checks if the cells in the cervix are as expected or not. So, if the pap test turns out to be negative, this means that the cells are as expected and the cervical region is normal. If the test turns out to be positive, this indicates the presence of some abnormal cells in the region. The test result does not indicate any illness or condition. It simply is an indication of some irregularities which need further investigation. Nearly 10% of pap tests turn out to be positive, with very rare ones being extremely serious.
What if You Are Pregnant and Your Pap Test Is Positive/Abnormal?
An abnormal pap during pregnancy might cause you to get worried that you and your baby are at risk. Once the result is positive, the doctor will talk to you about the plan of action and carry out a diagnosis to understand the anomaly. Any treatment could be started immediately or delayed until the delivery, based on the diagnosis and the stage of pregnancy. To further strengthen the diagnosis, the doctor might require conducting an internal biopsy, which would be done only if deemed necessary.
Can Taking A Pap Smear in Pregnancy Increase The Risk of Miscarriage?
After a pap test is conducted, some light bleeding is observed by most women. That bleeding is not a sign of miscarriage and is primarily due to the cervix being scrapped for cell samples. It does not affect the baby at all since the foetus is located higher in the body as compared to the uterus.
In unfortunate cases, some women might end up in a miscarriage, which inadvertently coincides with the pap smear test. Bleeding in such cases is accompanied by cramping in the abdomen and blots in the vaginal blood as well. But it is important to note that the miscarriage is not caused due to the pap test.
Other Risks Associated with Pap Smear?
Conducting a pap smear test poses no risks to you or your baby in any case at all. On the other hand, not undertaking one could cause an infection to be present in the cervical region, at the very least. This can affect your foetus, causing problems in growth or lead to health conditions like pneumonia or even eyesight related issues later on.
The process of a pap test can seem quite daunting given that it involves a very sensitive area of your body. However, understanding the benefits and the chance of mitigating any risks that might occur should be kept in mind. The test can be comfortable for you as well once you relax your mind and think of ensuring a healthy future for your own child.

The Balancing Act: Be Both a Cool Mom and a Super Wife!
When a woman becomes a mom, her life can feel so overwhelming that her role as a wife takes a backseat. Motherhood can be too demanding to leave time or energy for anything else. Beware moms! Both you and your husband deserve a fulfilling marriage for which you must learn how to be a good wife and mother at the same time.
While we rave about Tom Cruise performing one "Mission Impossible" after another, we tend to overlook the real-life superhero we have known forever – Moms! Only a woman can truly appreciate the efforts that go into balancing the scales of being a good mother and a great wife. Both are time and energy consuming and can be daunting to do justice to together. However, try out the following suggestions and you may well be able to walk this tightrope with a smile!
Tips for Being Both a Rocking Mom and Wife
1. “Me” Time
In your frantic rush to switch from one role to another, chances are you haven't gotten around to giving time to yourself. While it may seem like the wackiest idea you have ever heard, in reality being a great wife and mom can actually be easier once you start prioritising yourself. It recharges you for all that life throws your way. Plan a little head massage while the kids are with the grandparents. Watch as you bounce back recharged to attend to your dual duties.
2. Get the Heat On
While most women tend to put sex on the back burner when they become moms, lovemaking has been proven to rejuvenate you and bring you vigour! Your husband too will be one happy man when you decide to swap your old matronly robe with something lacy. Plus, research says that hubby will be more than willing to help around at home if he is getting a good dose of love. We didn't just make that up, promise!
3. Develop Herculean Patience
If you want to know how to be a good wife and mother, then the best advice would be to develop rock solid patience. You might be tempted to yell back every time your spouse or child engage you in a ‘who’s-the-loudest’ contest. Remember, when everyone is shouting, chances are that no one is listening. Try meeting their shouting match with a funny tactic of your own. Stick out your tongue or wink and smile to give them a pause. Don’t miss the opportunity to jump right in to what you wanted to say while they’re still figuring what you just did!
4. Take and Give Feedback
It's extremely difficult to have to listen to your husband and child crib non-stop about all the things that you’re doing wrong, when you’ve been burning yourself at both ends to make things right! It could be overcooked pasta or your kid's shorts that have run colour. One of the challenges in learning how to be a better wife and mother is seeing things from other’s vantage point. For instance, did you forget that you'd put the pasta on the stove or flipped the shorts with coloured clothes? We know that you’re dreading getting a direct one-to-one feedback, but you can always share a piece of your mind too and explain how hectic it gets for you.
5. Don't Miss Your Work-out Session
You’ve been eyeing that really pretty LBD for quite some time now, but you need to skip a size or two to really make it work. Did you know that while exercising the body releases ‘happy hormones’ that can make you feel up-beat throughout the day, besides making you fit? Tell your husband that a happier and healthier you will definitely be something for him to look forward to. We’re pretty sure he’ll need no more convincing to handle the kids while you sweat it out!
Marriage can be a tough, albeit beautiful, journey. Add to that the pressure of bringing up children and the tide can be rough. Finding the perfect balance between being a wife and mom is a tricky proposition, but one that has huge rewards. Hang in there and you can surely have the best of both worlds! Read more

The Incredible Journey of Breastfeeding with my Premature Twin Babies!
Breastfeeding is the best gift that nature has given to us. Breast Milk not only quenches the hunger in babies but also serves as an incredible tool that celebrates and enhances love.
Breast Milk is a miraculous medicine that protects and nourishes the newborn. So far, no one has invented a precise substitute for breast milk. Breast milk has some exceptional ingredients which are not lucid to replicate.
Breast Milk is always the Best Milk.
I am a mother of twins and a firm advocator of Breastfeeding. So I was naturally eager to breastfeed my twins while I was pregnant with them.
But things did not happen as I wished them to be. I had to deliver my twins pretty early, around seven months, through an emergency c-section. They were of low birth weight and needed NICU support.
I got separated from my twins immediately after the delivery. I was very much devastated. The doctor told me that my twins had not developed the ability to suck yet. Yes, I cannot breastfeed my twins directly!
More challenges were awaiting! Due to preterm labour, my milk secretion was less. I started expressing the milk manually. It was physically and mentally tiring. My milk was not sufficient to feed the twins, and hence we had to start them on formula.
All my hopes of breastfeeding my twins were slowly shattering. For a couple of days, I felt helpless. It was my mother who came to my rescue. She kept on insisting that I cannot give up so quickly.
And then I had a moment of enlightenment. I realized that even if I cannot exclusively breastfeed my twins, I can still ensure that they get at least the same amount of breast milk as their formula intake.
I started surfing the internet on how to increase the milk supply. My mother and Mother-in-law made sure to feed me with everything that will boost the secretion.
Our twins were still in the NICU. I expressed and stored the breast milk. My hubby shuttled twice a day to dispatch the pumped milk to our little ones. We were making some progress.
Still, manual expression was not easy. I was feeling tiresome. My hubby suggested buying a breast pump. After we purchased a breast pump, expressing milk was efficient and easy.
I became more confident and was able to feed my twins alternatively breast milk and formula.
I was able to directly breastfeed my twins only after they were three months old. Though late, it was a divine feeling. The little ones cuddled me with hunger. I lovingly embraced them. I felt complete as a mother.
There were many hurdles right from the start. Preterm delivery, low milk secretion, not being able to feed directly. But my family rendered incredible support. Whenever I was down, they boosted my spirits and found ways to lessen my struggles. I am always grateful to them.
Without their guidance and support, I may not be writing about my breastfeeding journey today. Read more

The myth of right, wrong and perfectly parenting a newborn
As a new parent, I received tonnes of advice, and was judged innumerable times and it has continued to this day. Perhaps it is too easy to judge a new parent/parents, but too difficult to be the kind of support that new parents require.
Since the day my little one was born, someone or the other would always point out to me, “You are doing it all wrong!”; “Why is your baby crying? You should give her the pacifier”; “Hold her carefully, you will hurt her for sure”; “Why can’t you buy some interesting clothes for her?”; “Are you still breastfeeding her? It is time you wean her off”; “Make the cereal for the baby and don’t feed the store bought cereals”; “Massage her neck to avoid giving her a double-chin like yours”. These are only a few things I heard. I am not someone who takes criticism at heart, however, comments and judgements like these left me confused and worsened my post-partum blues. The insensitive comments and judgement continued until one day I realised that the scrutiny that people subject you to is never going to stop, defending oneself is therefore a futile exercise. So I stopped doing two things instntly – stopped feeling guilty unnecessarily by listening to what everyone had to say and also defending myself against the criticism and judgement. I started ignoring critics and judges and did things my way. Eventually, I felt better, confident and happier. Above everything else, I realised I know the best for my child, so the only other person whose words I should take seriously were that of the pediatrician’s.Every parent at some point of time does have doubts as to whether one is doing it the right way. New parents are as new to being parents as a newborn baby is new to the world. Each day brings in a new lesson, developing in them a fresh learning experience. The concepts of perfect parenting, right and wrong parenting are mere myths when it comes to a new baby. Each baby is different and has needs that can be perfectly met by the parent/ parents. The health of the baby can be monitored by doctors/ healthcare professionals. The baby and the parent/ parents in due course of time learn it all themselves.
What new parents need is not commentary, judgement, criticism or advice on ‘how to do it all perfectly’ but support, concern, and being asked, ‘Can I help you in any way?’ The old saying goes it takes a village to raise a child. This implies not a group of individuals pointing out flaws in the parenting style of a new parent, but a strong support system for raising a child, a happy and healthy environment that favours the mental and physical growth and development of the child.
If you are a new parent reading this, trust yourselves and your doctor above everyone else. Enjoy each day as it comes, for little humans are both messy and magical! Read more

Dr Sameer awadhiya

A. Nasal blockage is very common, specially in small children because of the narrow nasal cavity. Any kind of saline drops like nasal clear will be helpful in dissolving the stuffy secretions, which can be taken out by vnasal aspirator gently also steam inhalation will be helpful also, try to avoid keeping the child directly under the fan.
