Are You Financially Ready to Bring Up Your Little One?
The joys of parenthood are undeniable, and the experience of raising a child is richly rewarding. Understandably, throughout the journey of parenthood, you may want to give your children the very best of everything in life. However, a leave-no-stone-unturned approach requires not just love, constant involvement and enthusiasm, but ample finances too. In fact, the road from infancy to adulthood is dotted with significant expenses, be it be related to healthcare or education.
Read on to know how you can prepare for a child financially.
Make a Rough Estimate of the Finances You Require
Today, there are several avenues for quality education, recreation and healthcare services, but it is important to set some savings aside to fund these expenses. This is especially important, as these expenses have risen by leaps and bounds in the recent past, and the same cannot be said about annual wages. So, planning is a must, and a good way to start is to estimate the range of expenses that will come your way.
Your first step can be estimating pre-birth and first-year expenses. For instance, data from The Economic Times report indicates that you may need about Rs. 5.25 lakh during the initial 12–18 months of your child’s life.
Cost of living
Healthcare
Pre-delivery and delivery
House help
Total
Rs. 45,000
Rs. 30,000
Rs. 2.5 lakh
Rs. 2,00,000
Rs. 5.25 lakh
A Times of India report goes further, indicating that you are likely to require a sum that’s upwards of Rs. 65 lakh for your child, from cradle to graduation. This is split over the years as follows.
0-4 years
5-8 years
9-12 years
13-16 years
17-21 years
Total
Rs. 6.2 lakh
Rs. 6.9 lakh
Rs. 8.4 lakh
Rs. 10.5 lakh
Rs. 35.4 lakh
Rs. 67.4 lakh
On observing the table, you’ll notice an increase in the amount required when your children are about to achieve adulthood. This is because of the higher cost of education involved. As per The Economic Times, here’s how much you may have to set aside for your child’s higher studies.
Engineering
Medicine
MBA
Higher education abroad
Rs. 9.2-15.6 lakh
Rs. 0.25-25 lakh
Rs. 14-22 lakh
Rs. 11-68 lakh
These figures are indicative and often consider upper limits and costs in metro cities. Nevertheless, using this as a guideline will help you arrive at an inflation-adjusted estimate for the future.
Analyse Particulars and Create Monthly Budgets
All of this information may seem intimidating, however, it needn’t be so. As a parent, you can consider it to be an opportunity to showcase sound financial planning. At the end of the day, it is possible to break down the total into smaller amounts and work towards achieving it.
For instance, for a newborn, consider one-time expenses such as those related to delivery and furniture such as strollers, cots and changing tables, and then account for recurring expenses such as toys, clothing, healthcare, domestic help, and infant and toddler classes. This will help you determine accurately how much you’ll require for this stage of your child’s development. Accordingly, you’ll be able to adjust your existing expenses and create enough room in your budget.
Consider an Insurance Policy and an Emergency Fund
Insurance policies can greatly reduce your financial burden, especially if a complication is involved. You could avail a family floater plan, opt for an add-on to your existing health plan or simply rely on your company’s group policy. Depending on the particulars of the policy, you’ll get coverage for pre-and-post-hospitalisation and/or delivery expenses at a budget-friendly premium. Similarly, to ensure that you are prepared for every eventuality, work towards building an emergency fund that is equal to 12 months’ household expenses. In the event of a recession or sudden job loss, this amount will ensure that you can continue to provide your child with quality care.
Learn About Advantageous Government Schemes
Periodically, the Government of India rolls out schemes benefitting expecting mothers and newborns that alleviate any financial burden and provide access to good medical facilities. For instance, the recently-launched Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan or SUMAN scheme provides free healthcare to pregnant women, new mothers, and newborns. Pulse Polio and PM Jan Dhan Yojana are other beneficial schemes to consider. These schemes, in combination with maternity leave of up to 26 weeks as per the Maternity Benefits (Amendment) Act, can help you ease into parenthood and enjoy the process instead of being stressed.
Earmark Investments Instead of Taking Loans
On making a budget and noting the Government schemes available, you’ll realise that arranging the necessary finance to raise a child is a goal that you can achieve confidently. That said, how you go about doing this is crucial too. By investing right from when you’re planning to have a child, you can ensure that you have the necessary amount at every stage of your child’s life. With sizeable maturity proceeds available periodically, you’ll never feel the need to take a loan to provide your child with an exemplary upbringing.
To make your savings grow substantially, it’s best that you create a balanced portfolio that includes high-yield instruments such as stocks and mutual funds, as well as safe instruments that offer substantial, assured returns, such as the Bajaj Finance Fixed Deposit.
The outright advantage of picking an asset that carries ICRA’s and CRISIL’s maximum stability ratings, MAAA and FAAA respectively, is that you get guaranteed returns at a rate of up to 8.35%. In fact, you can forecast your returns precisely by using an FD calculator.
To understand how this instrument can bolster your efforts, take a look at your returns as a regular investor when you park Rs. 10 or Rs. 20 lakh for a period of 5 years and opt for proceeds at maturity only.

List of 10 Different Types of Pregnancy
Pregnancy seems like a simple term. However, there are different kinds of pregnancy that one needs to be aware of. There are various reasons ranging from physical differences between women to multiple egg release among others. Read on to find out more about different kinds of pregnancies in women.
Different Pregnancy Types
1. Intrauterine Pregnancy
Normal pregnancies where the foetus or foetuses are implanted inside the uterus. The placenta is attached to the inside of the uterus to the uterine muscle.
2. Molar Pregnancy
Molar pregnancies are of two kinds- complete and partial. Complete molar pregnancies occur when the placenta is formed in the uterus without a foetus to support. Partial molar pregnancies result when two sperms fertilize one egg, however, two foetuses don’t develop. The placenta is not normal with the foetus having too many chromosomes. This eventually leads to a spontaneous abortion as the foetus cannot develop in a safe and healthy manner.
3. Ectopic or Tubal Pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants itself somewhere other than the fallopian tube or uterus. It could implant itself in the neck of the uterus or in the abdomen. The situation is not very safe and eventually leads to the abortion of the foetus.
Tubal pregnancies, on the other hand, occur when the fertilized egg implants itself in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. Again, such a pregnancy is considered unsafe and needs to be terminated if the miscarriage does not occur naturally.
4. Intra-Abdominal Pregnancy
Most intra-abdominal pregnancies follow after cesarean delivery. The scar left behind after a C-section may weaken and tear, allowing the foetus to slip into the abdominal cavity. The practicality of the pregnancy will depend on the gestational age of the foetus at the occurrence of the tear. Some intra-abdominal pregnancies remain undetected and can complete a full term. However, a complete hysterectomy may be needed after birth.
5. Singlet Pregnancy
Singlet pregnancy is when one egg meets one sperm, and only one foetus develops.
6. Multiple Pregnancy
Multiple pregnancies occur as a result of multiple eggs being fertilized at the same time. This occurs when two sperms fertilize one or two eggs, or when one egg is fertilized by one sperm and then divides into two zygotes. Fraternal twins result when more than one egg is fertilized or if one egg is fertilized by two sperms. If one egg splits into multiple zygotes, identical twins will be born. Fertility treatments may result in five or more fertilized and implanted foetuses.
7. Lupus Pregnancy
Lupus is an auto-immune disease which can be complicated for pregnant women and can be further complicated by blood clotting.
8. Biochemical Pregnancy
A clinical term, it means pregnancy loss that occurs shortly after implantation. It generally occurs before an ultrasound can detect the heartbeat of a foetus. The egg gets implanted in the uterus but is unable to grow for a reason.
9. Breech Birth
If the baby’s position is head-up in the uterus with the buttocks or feet close to the cervix, it is termed as a breech pregnancy. Most babies are breech at the start of pregnancy and turn to the headfirst position closer to the due date. Breech birth can be divided into the complete breech, frank breech and incomplete breech (footling breech).
10. High-Risk Pregnancy
Women aged over 35, diabetic, pregnant with multiples and other health condition that could affect pregnancy fall under the high-risk pregnancy category. In some cases, if medication is required to control medical conditions, the pregnancy could be termed as high-risk. A history of any prior complications in childbirth could also lead to high-risk pregnancies.

Short Term Memory Loss in Children - Causes and Tips to Cope With It
Apart from the little joys and happy moments that parenthood offers to you comes several responsibilities and problems of which you should be well aware of. Short-term memory loss is one such problem which is quite common in children and definitely needs attention.
What is Short Term Memory Loss?
Short-term memory loss refers to a condition in which people can remember things that they had heard or learnt long ago but are unable to remember details that they heard only some time ago. For example, if you are suffering from short-term memory loss, you might remember incidents from 20 years ago quite vividly, but incidents or details that you heard only 20 minutes ago might appear to be indistinct or hazy. Technically speaking, the inability or rather an impaired ability to form fresh or new episodic memories is known to be a condition of short-term memory loss.
What Causes Short-Term Memory Loss in a Child?
There are quite a lot of reasons that may lead to short-term memory loss in children. Some of these causes are explained as follows:
1. Sleep Deprivation
Proper sleep both in terms of quantity as well as quality is extremely important for a child’s memory to function properly. Hence, if a child is sleep-deprived, he or she may suffer from this problem.
2. Dyslexia
Apart from affecting a child’s fluency of speech and accuracy of comprehension, dyslexia can also take a toll on his or her memory, causing the child to suffer from short-term memory loss.
3. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Children who have ADHD usually experience short-term memory loss as they are not able to concentrate on or pay attention to most of the stimuli that they are subjected to.
4. Dyscalculia
As children suffering from dyscalculia are unable to process visual and auditory information, they find difficulty in retaining the same, which leads to this problem.
Signs and Symptoms of Short-Term Memory Problems in Children
More than treating the problem, identifying the condition of short-term memory loss in your child is a challenge in itself. Some of the signs and symptoms of it are mentioned below:
Inability to relate to an incident that is known to the child
Inability to identify places that the child has visited before
Difficulty in remembering dates, names, etc.
Difficulty in remembering things taught to him earlier
What Complications Can Short Term Memory Loss Cause in Kids?
Memory loss in kids can often be a result of something trivial such as the child not paying attention to the initial stimulus or the like. However, it can also stem from some serious problems. Short-term memory loss in children can be indicative of:
Stroke
Malfunctioning of the brain
low IQ
Nerve impairment
How is Childhood Short Term Memory Loss Diagnosed?
Short-term memory loss in children is usually characterised by the inability to reproduce or retain details which are usual for a child to remember. It is usually confirmed by a paediatrician or a child specialist after going through the child’s case study and observing him for a few sessions. Sometimes, even tests like MRI, CT Scan and so on is performed upon the child in order to diagnose the problem.
Treatment for Child's Short-Term Memory Loss
The treatment of short-term memory loss in kids depends on what is the root of the problem and how serious the problem is. If it is a minor issue and has been detected in initial stages, the problem can be solved using behavioural therapies or by changing the learning pattern of the child. If it is complicated, doctors often resort to medicines such as anti-anxiety drugs.
Parental Tips to Handle and Prevent Short Term Memory Issues in their Child
Keep the following things in mind while dealing with your child:
Be patient: No matter what problem your child is suffering from, you have to deal affectionately and patiently with him or her.
Proper diagnosis: Before arriving at a conclusion, make sure that the doctor has confirmed and diagnosed the exact problem.
Shower love and attention: Kids can be very vulnerable if not well attended, and so, providing the right amount of attention can often help in overcoming minor problems.
Provide practice sessions: Memory can be improved to a great extent by proper practice and exercise. Make sure you provide them well.
Follow-up with the doctor: Even if you notice improvements, it is necessary that you follow-up with the doctor for professional guidance and check-up.
Remember that the problem of short-term memory loss is not very rare and can be treated.

Taking Cough Syrup to Get Pregnant - Does it Really Help?
Trying to conceive can be challenging for many couples as fertility problems are on the rise at present. There are a lot of women who have noticed that taking a specific kind of cough syrup around the time of ovulation can help them conceive. Although there is not enough documented scientific proof of this, several doctors do agree that taking cough syrup containing guaifenesin may help women get pregnant.
Does Cough Syrup Increase Your Fertility
If you are wondering, can cough syrup help you get pregnant, the answer is yes - in certain instances. Some cough syrups contain guaifenesin which comes from the bark of the guaiacum tree found in the Caribbean. Guaifenesin is an ‘expectorant’. This means that it thins out the mucus in the lungs and airways so that we may bring up the phlegm and spit it out when we have a respiratory infection or a cough.
Guaifenesin also affects cervical mucus in women and makes it thinner and wetter. This enables sperms to swim faster through the cervical mucus to reach the egg and fertilize it. This was noticed by women in the 1980s, and a study was conducted by a doctor named Jerome Check with a sample group of 40 couples who were trying to conceive. Dr Check discovered that 23 of those women had thinner cervical mucus after taking 200 mg of guaifenesin thrice a day. Out of these couples, 15 were able to conceive during this test.
Thus, it was found that taking cough syrup containing guaifenesin helps increase the fertility of women by thinning the cervical mucus.
How to Know if Your Cervical Mucus is Dry or Wet
In order to determine whether your cervical mucus is dry or wet, you will need to undergo post-coital fertility tests. A doctor will examine samples of your cervical mucus after you have had sexual intercourse with your partner. Thick or dry cervical mucus makes it tougher for sperm to swim through and reach the egg for fertilization. When the cervical mucus is thin and wet, sperm can swim quickly through it and successfully fertilize the egg.
What cough syrup helps you get pregnant? If you are having problems trying to conceive and your doctor has found that your cervical mucus is thick and dry, taking guaifenesin cough syrup can help you become pregnant. The guaifenesin thins out cervical mucus, making it easy for sperms to get through it and reach the egg faster.
When to Take Cough Syrup While You’re Trying to Get Pregnant
Cough syrup with guaifenesin should be taken around the time of ovulation if you are trying to become pregnant and want your cervical mucus to be thinner. By monitoring your basal body temperature and using an ovulation test kit available in pharmacies, you can determine the exact time of ovulation. Once you know when you are ovulating, you can take the cough syrup around that time to help increase your fertility.
How Much Cough Syrup is Recommended
Although you may feel like taking more cough syrup, it is harmful to exceed the recommended dosage of medication. It is best to take two teaspoons of guaifenesin cough syrup thrice a day around the time of ovulation in order to increase your chances of getting pregnant.
Are There Any Other Ways to Improve the Consistency and Texture of Cervical Mucus
Although using cough syrup to get pregnant has gained popularity, there is no proper scientific study that proves this definitively. There are other ways to alter the consistency of cervical mucus to make it easier for sperm to get through the birth canal and reach the egg for fertilization. Your doctor can recommend lubricants specifically made for couples who are trying to conceive. These lubricants will not kill the sperm or reduce their motility and may increase your chances of getting pregnant.
Apart from the single study by a doctor in 1982, there has been no further scientific research on whether guaifenesin cough syrup can actually increase your chances of getting pregnant. There is only anecdotal proof that cough syrup can help couples get pregnant. Talk to an obstetrician before taking any medication while trying to conceive.
If you are taking cough syrup, you should ensure that it does not contain antihistamines, which will actually dry your cervical mucus and make it tougher for you to conceive. Avoid exceeding the recommended dosage of cough syrup. Avoid medication without consulting a doctor. Talk to an obstetrician first if you have been trying to get pregnant unsuccessfully for over 10 months.

8 Side Effects of Wearing Contact Lenses for Too Long
Wearing contact lenses for the first time may seem like a daunting task, but once you get the hang of it, you won't feel like taking them off. When you wear contact lenses and realise that the world seems clearer (without wearing a pair of eyeglasses) and you look beautiful, you'd obviously want to wear them all day long. However, wearing lenses for too long may not be good for your eyes. Wearing contact lenses is one thing but wearing them for too long can be dangerous for your eyes.
8 Harmful Effects of Wearing Contact Lenses for Too Long
Some of the harmful effects of wearing contact lenses for too long include:
1. Your Eyes May Not Receive Enough Oxygen
Oxygen is crucial for your eyes. As contact lenses sit directly on your eyes and cover the entire cornea, they block the oxygen from reaching your eyes. Hence, wearing contacts for long hours at a stretch can cut down the oxygen supply to your eyes.
2. You May Have Dry Eyes
Dry eye syndrome is a phenomenon when eyes turn red and itchy. As a result, the cornea gets scarred in the process. Contact lenses absorb most of the tears to keep themselves soft and thus you may have dry eyes. You can avoid this by not wearing your contacts all the time or taking frequent breaks and using eye drops to keep your cornea lubricated.
3. Allergies and Eye Infections
If you wear contact lenses for too long, you may get eye infections or allergies in the long run. The reason behind infections is corneal abrasion. If you have dry eyes or if the contact lenses do not sit properly on the surface of your eyes, it may lead to corneal abrasion.
4. Corneal Ulcer
When bacteria, fungus, and virus appear on your cornea and are left untreated, these may develop into a corneal ulcer. This situation may even lead to permanent blindness in extreme cases.
5. Ptosis
If your eyelids start drooling and you find it hard to open them, you may have ptosis. Sometimes the fluid may also move into the tissues and retract the lid, especially when the lens is about to be removed.
6. Interact with Contraceptives and Medications
Concurrent use of birth control pills and contact lenses can result in dry eyes and irritation. To be more specific, it may trigger a reaction in the tear film of the surface of your eyes and lead to a burning sensation. If you are on birth control pills, avoid wearing contact lenses.
7. Diminished Corneal Reflex
Corneal reflux is our brain's way of telling the eyelids to shut down whenever there's some incoming danger. For example, like flying objects, a gust of wind, or anything that may damage the eyes. Wearing contact lenses weakens this reflex which means your eyelids won't shut down quickly enough, thus posing a danger during specific situations.
8. Your Eyes May Hurt
Eye pain is another problem faced by people who use contact lenses. Wearing contact lenses for too long can cut down the supply of oxygen to your eyes. As a result, your eyes may hurt or you may have a blurred vision. Sometimes, people also end up losing their eyesight.
Tips to Take Care of Your Eyes When You Use Contact Lenses Regularly
Here are some tips you can follow to keep your eyes protected:
Never wear your contact lens 24X7 and always take them off before going to bed.
To make sure you're wearing them correctly, place the lens on your fingertips and notice if it forms a "U" shape. It there are any edges flaring out other than this shape and it doesn't look like a cup, it's inside out. Make sure you place them right.
Make sure you wash your hands well before you touch your contact lenses. Avoid applying lotions which contain lanolin and moisturizing agents before touching your lenses. Oily and scented soaps are also a no since particles from these may end up sticking to the surface of your lens.
Make sure your fingernails are cut and not too long. This is to prevent accidental scratching or damaging your contacts when you put them on.
Get your eyes checked from time to time and check whether you need to replace your lenses.
Opt for silicone hydrogel lenses as these don't totally cut off the oxygen supply to the eyes and are better than traditional soft contact lenses.
If you prefer wearing contact lenses daily, make sure you lubricate the cornea with an eyedrop whenever you take them off. This will prevent your eyes from getting dry.
When you put on the lens, roll your eyes to make a circle then blink. This helps it easier for the lenses to settle and adapt to your cornea.
After you wear the lenses, look in the mirror to check whether they are placed right. If not then remove and try again.
FAQs
Worried about how to best make use of your contacts? Here are the answers below.
1. Is it Bad to Use Contact Lenses Daily?
It's not bad to wear contact lenses every day. However, you should not wear them 24*7.
2. What will Happen if I Cry with Contact Lens?
In general, nothing will happen. The moisture from crying will travel across the surface of your lenses and that's it. But make sure not to rub your eyes while crying since that's dangerous and could potentially harm your cornea.
3. Can I Sleep Wearing Lens?
Sleeping with your contact lenses on is risky. It'll cut off the oxygen supply to your eyes and when you wake up, you may feel sensitive to light.
Now you know what will happen to your eyes if you wear contact lenses for too long, so don't. Just follow the above-mentioned tips and your eyes won't have any trouble.

6 Christmassy Things Your Toddler Will Love Doing
Mothers with toddlers can find preparing for festivities hard to cope with, what with all the work and keeping an eye on the kids. However, children can be easily entertained, especially if you know of fun Christmas crafts for kids that will keep them occupied for hours.
With Christmas right around the corner, you’re all set to celebrate with your friends and family. But with a toddler in tow, certain preparations need to be made. Keeping him entertained so that you and everyone else can have a good time is crucial. Find out how you can keep your toddler busy with fun Christmas activities for kids.
6 Christmas Activity Ideas for Toddlers at Home
1. Cookie-Cutter Decorations
Forget store-bought decorations - they’re so mainstream! Have your toddler make them instead. All you need is a few sheets of colourful paper, some bright paint, and cookie-cutters of different shapes and sizes. Show your child how to dip the cutter in a shallow bowl full of paint, and place it over the paper firmly till he gets the shape. Repeat this with different cookie-cutters till the page is full. This is an easy Christmas craft for toddlers to make.
2. Creative Vegetable Prints
If you don't have a cookie-cutter or don't want to mess it up with paint, use the age-old method of cutting slices of potatoes or ladies fingers and using them for imprinting on the sheets of paper. You can carve your favourite designs out of them, or simply let your child dip them in colours and make his own design on the paper, using the print. This is a fun and safe Christmas craft for kids that you will enjoy supervising.
3. Get Ornamental
You will need ornaments to decorate your Christmas tree - what better way to keep your toddler occupied than involving him in the decorations? This is one of the easiest Christmas crafts for kids. Ask your child to trace the outline of the gingerbread man on cardboard using a cookie-cutter. Cut it out for him, and encourage him to colour it using his creativity. Cut out a few of them so he'll have a whale of a time painting them in different colours.
4. Garlanding Fun
A fun Christmas craft for toddlers is to make garlands out of cereal loops. Simply empty some of the cereal in a bowl and give your child a long thread. Then, teach him to take each loop and thread it, creating a little garland. Tie up the ends and make him wear it! You can also use these garlands to decorate the kitchen or your child’s room.
5. Talking About Christmas
An interesting thing to do with your toddler this Christmas is spending quality time together and talking about Christmas! You can talk about Christ's birth, Santa Claus and his reindeer, and Jack Frost. Play Christmas songs and sing along together to get your child in the festive mood. You can also drive him around town to show him the many Christmas decorations other people have put out!
6. Duct Tape Christmas Tree
This is an easy Christmas craft for kids. Using duct tape, draw an outline of a Christmas tree on your floor. Then, ask your child to "decorate" the tree using his building blocks or legos. This will take up a lot of his time, as he can let his imagination take charge, leaving you with ample time to prepare for other things for the festive season.
Other than these Christmas activities for toddlers, you can come up with your own ideas depending upon your interests and that of your child. Involve him in things like baking, cleaning and decorating. It’s a good way to make him understand the importance of the season and have him come to love it. Read more
