16 Fun Filled Birthday Party Games Ideas for Kids
Your kid's birthday - this is one time of the year where everything has to go right. Apart from the gifts, the catering and the sheer logistics, the games that are played form a pivotal part in the direction in which the party is headed. A bad sequence of games can make all your hard work go to waste. A good game plan (no pun intended), can even make a hastily planned party, a smashing success.
If you are lost on how to go about entertaining the little ones for hours, always turn to little games that give them, along with their peers. Here are some interesting birthday party games for children that can keep an army of little ones engaged.
Things to Consider While Choosing Birthday Party Games
Choosing what games to set up for little kids seems quite easy, but there are certain things to understand before you do it. In order to ensure that nobody in the party is left out, here are some things that you may want to consider when you choose games.
Focus on the average age of all the children attending the party and choose games that can be played by all the children, and not a select few.
If you have planned a themed party, don’t be afraid to stray from the theme a little when you choose a game; especially if the game could clearly be a lot of fun.
Limit intellectual games, and instead, try and have a lot of light-hearted games to keep the excitement alive. Children have enough intellectually stimulating plays in the school and at home.
Keep the games short. Don’t drag them for too long, as kids will get bored of them. Long games are unlikely to get much attention, and will only drag down the spirit of the party.
Avoid making the games gender specific. Try to choose games that do not dabble with gender stereotypes. Don’t have games like 'princess dressing sessions,' unless you are sure that everyone can take part in it.
Plan well and prepare ahead. Handling multiple kids can be a challenge. Plan in advance about how each game should go, to avoid any chaos.

Do You See a Faint Line on the Pregnancy Test - Are You Pregnant?
A pregnancy test functions in a simple way- one line means no, two means yes. But sometimes you can find faint lines on the test making it hard to figure out the exact result. Faint lines on a pregnancy test are not uncommon, and the reason can be as simple as doing the test too early. However, to further delve into the reasons behind the faint lines, it is always good to understand the principles on which a pregnancy test works.
What Causes Faint Lines on the Pregnancy Test
Most pregnancy tests available in the market are very accurate, and some of them can give an indication on the very first day of a missed period itself. The common pregnancy tests analyze the urine of the subject, looking for the presence of the hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). This is a hormone that is released when a fertilised egg attaches to the signalling the beginning of a pregnancy. Other than the urine test, the blood test is also another common and reliable method to determine pregnancy.
Also, determine how "faint" is faint. Compare it to the first line, and if there is a drastic difference, then you have a faint indicator line.
Before you jump to conclusions after seeing the faint lines, make sure you remember a few things about pregnancy tests. There are many reasons why a faint line can appear.
Misreading the instructions: It is natural to miss an instruction or two, especially when you are using the test for the first time. Faint lines can be the result of you not having used the test properly. In such instances, repeating the test is enough.
Hastiness: Maybe you were in a hurry and did not wait for the prescribed period of time before you threw the test into the bin after seeing faint lines.
Reading at incorrect time slots: If you are not reading the results within the time slots suggested, the test may show evaporation lines, which appear faintly. Evaporation lines are caused by the urine, and if you are late in reading the tests, these lines may appear.
Taking the test too early: If you have taken the test too early, the lines may appear faintly. It is advised to wait for a few days and take the test again to confirm. Testing is ideally done 10 days after ovulation or after it has been confirmed that you missed a period.
Faulty kit: Sometimes the test you are using may not have been stored properly or may have a manufacturing defect, so you may not get a clear reading. Check the expiry date of the test as if it is past that, its efficacy has decreased.
You may have taken the test at the wrong time of the day: It is advised that urine pregnancy tests should be taken in the morning when the urine is concentrated, and any presence of hCG will typically be high.
Low hCG levels: A faint line could also mean that your body is creating less than the optimum amounts of the hCG hormones.
Inaccurate calculations: Faint lines could be the result of using a test after miscalculating the period cycle.
Lower efficient test kits: Some pregnancy tests are more accurate than the others. There are tests that can detect an hCG amount as small as 20 mIU, while some tests will need to detect at least 100 mIU to show a result. Hence, you may get faint lines because of these different levels of sensitivity to the hormone. Before you buy a pregnancy test kit for the next round of tests, do some research on online forums and pick up the brands which are known for being sensitive. If the next lines are darker, your pregnancy is positive. If they are still faint, you may need to see your doctor.
Early miscarriage: Faint lines could also appear after an early miscarriage when traces of the hormone are still in your system.
Medication: Medication like Thorazine and a range of fertility drugs may result in faint lines. The faint lines on the test can appear for those who are undergoing fertility treatments. It is advised that you reach out to your doctor in such a case.
Presence of a tumour: In very rare cases, some tumours result in the production of hCG, which will be detected in the test and result in the faint lines.
Does a Faint Line on Pregnancy Test Indicate Pregnancy?
A faint line may indicate pregnancy, but it can also point to an early miscarriage as the test picks up only traces of the hCG hormone. The only way for you to determine what is happening is to repeat the test every day. If the lines get darker, then the onset of pregnancy starts to resemble a typical development. If the lines stay faint, then you need to consult a physician immediately.
Does a Light Line on Pregnancy Test Indicate a False Positive?
A faint line may also be the result of something else such as medication or evaporation lines. If you are taking multiple tests over time and the faint lines only appear a few times, it was most likely a false positive. An extremely faint line is not an affirmation of pregnancy, but it should be investigated. The best way is to wait a couple days and take the test again.
The faint line on pregnancy test not getting darker could be an indicator that there is a hormonal imbalance. This is an indicator of a chemical pregnancy, which is used to describe an early miscarriage.
The most important part of dealing with situations where you are uncertain about the test result is to inform yourself from the right sources. Websites and articles help in narrowing down to possibilities but cannot be substituted for professional feedback. Take your time with multiple tests and of course, consult your gynaecologist. Nothing can replace professional feedback.

Pneumonia in Toddlers and Children
The immune system of a growing child is still in its developmental stages, this means that they are susceptible to numerous conditions and illnesses. Some of the toughest conditions to deal with are issues with the lung due to the delicate importance of the organ. One of the conditions that plague the lung is pneumonia which can become fatal if not treated at the right time. The first step to ensure timely treatment is by understanding the condition.
What is Pneumonia?
The lung is made of numerous air sacs known as alveoli, when these air sacs are filled with liquid or puss they become infected. This makes it incredibly hard for your child to breathe normally and it also reduces the amount of oxygen in your body and, in turn, your bloodstream. This type of infection is called pneumonia. This condition can be mild but if not treated can become life-threatening.
Who Are at the Risk of Getting Pneumonia?
Due to the under-developed immune systems children under the age of 2 are at risk of getting pneumonia more easily than others. People over the age of 65 are also at risk due to the weakness of their immune system at that age. This, however, doesn’t limit the condition from afflicting those in-between these age groups. Anyone can get this disease.
Types of Pneumonia
There are different types of pneumonia and they all affect the body in different ways.
Bacterial Pneumonia
Of the three types of pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia is considered most severe version. Those afflicted by bacterial pneumonia develop symptoms very suddenly and may become extremely weak. When bacterial pneumonia begins to spread to a portion of the lung called the bronchi it is called bronchopneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia manifests extremely fast and patients will develop a sudden high fever, cough and their breathing start becoming fast and erratic. They also lose either appetite and become weak very fast. In this type of pneumonia, look out for flared nostrils, blue lips or nails, a sunken chest, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Viral Pneumonia
This form of the infection takes longer to incubate and is easier to treat. It is also less severe than bacterial pneumonia. The viral strain of pneumonia usually shows symptoms similar to a cold and, over time, worsen. This strain of the disease can give a person a fever close to a temperature of 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius). Viral Pneumonia, although less serious, can weaken your child’s immune system significantly. The risk of the viral form of this disease is that it leaves your child’s body open to other viral infections and diseases like the flu virus, respiratory syncytial virus, etc.
Walking Pneumonia
An atypical form of pneumonia that is much less harmful than other forms of the infection, walking pneumonia in kids can go unnoticed at times and just resemble a common cold. This form of the disease will not hinder your child too much but can last anywhere from a week to a month and can make your child uncomfortable.
Causes of Pneumonia in Children
There are many causes of pneumonia that can be categorized into three main categories.
The first category of causes is numerous types of viruses. The most common viruses that cause pneumonia are:
Influenza
Respiratory syncytial virus
Cold viruses
The second category of causes is bacteria, the most common bacteria that cause pneumonia are:
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
The third category is fungi. Numerous fungi of any origin can cause infections of the lung and cause pneumonia. There are no common fungi that are directly known to cause it. The body can react adversely to a specific type of fungi that can result in pneumonia.
Signs and Symptoms of Pneumonia in Kids
There are numerous ways to identify pneumonia. Symptoms of pneumonia in toddlers can be more aggressive but are generally the same as in adults. Here are some of the signs and symptoms of pneumonia:
High fever
Extreme fatigue
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Inflamed windpipe
Breathlessness
High blood pressure
Headache
Muscle pain
Joint pain
For an accurate diagnosis and further symptoms please consult your primary healthcare physician.
Diagnosis of Childhood Pneumonia
Doctors commonly can diagnose pneumonia through a combination of blood tests and x-rays along with breathing tests done to measure oxygen levels with a device called an oximeter. A routine physical examination is also undertaken. The sooner your child is diagnosed and the treatment has started, the lower the severity and long-term effects of pneumonia.
Is Pneumonia Contagious?
There is no evidence of pneumonia being contagious or being spread from either animal to person or person to person. There is a risk your child can, however, get the bacterial or viral infections which could lead to pneumonia.
Possible Complications
Pneumonia can weaken your immune system immensely. This can lead to numerous side effects as your child’s body becomes susceptible to various types of infection and fevers. In extreme cases, it can cause the organs to shut down. Pneumonia can lead to the lung collapsing or the airways becoming inflamed and thus making breathing a challenge while the fever caused by the infection can lead to an accelerated heart rate or organ failure. Pneumonia if left untreated can be fatal.
How Long Does Pneumonia Last in a Child?
The length of the infection itself can depend on the variant of pneumonia, under the best of circumstances it can last between 4 days to a week and in the worst-case scenario, it can last up to six weeks.
Treatment of Pneumonia for a Child
Depending on the type of pneumonia your child may have the treatment method varies. For instance, antibiotics for pneumonia in children are only recommended as a treatment for the bacterial strain of the disease. It is recommended you seek the care of a medical practitioner first as the type of treatment also depends greatly on the condition your child is in, the amount of time that has passed since the symptoms first manifested and the speed of deterioration.
Note: Please ensure all antibiotics are taken for the full length of the prescription period, diseases like the human body, learn to adapt, this means not taking the full course could make the bacteria immune to the antibiotics and lead to a mutant strain of pneumoniae bacteria that could become dangerous.
How to Take Care of Your Child at Home
Under most circumstances the viral and walking strains of pneumonia will not require medication but if severe enough may require medical attention. In most cases, the disease can be fought from home. Here is what you need to do for your child:
Keep them in open airy spaces
Keep them dressed comfortably
Ensure you keep them hydrated
They will lose their appetite, ensure they eat to keep their energy levels up
Keep in contact with your doctor and regularly update him on your child's condition
Treat the fever symptoms with paracetamol and cold packs
Treat a sore throat with warm drinks
Visit the doctor or have them perform a house call every 3-4 days
Ensure you make a note of your child’s status, new symptoms and any changes in condition. Inform your doctor about all these changes, if they feel your child is sick to the extent that they need to be kept in the hospital for observation, admit them. This is not irregular as children can have a weaker immune system, the doctors will treat them the same as you would at home but in case of deterioration, they will be able to act faster than they would be able to if your child was at home.
How to Prevent Your Child From Getting Pneumonia?
Here are a few preventive measures for pneumonia you can take for your child:
Ensure your child’s vaccines are up-to-date
Ensure their hygiene practices are healthy
Ensure they aren’t exposed to harmful chemicals and tobacco.
When Do You Need to Consult a Paediatrician?
As soon as possible. It is recommended that you see a doctor and get diagnosed immediately after the symptoms begin to manifest. If it is the bacterial strain, the faster you start medications the better. As mentioned before, severe pneumonia in children can become fatal if left untreated or unattended. Please consult your doctor swiftly if any symptoms begin to show.
Pneumonia can be a challenging disease to manage but if done early and with care, a fatal outcome can be avoided. Ensure your child is always hydrated, well-nourished and that you follow the doctor’s instructions for their care. Fighting pneumonia can be a month long battle, ensure you stay vigilant and attentive as much as possible, ask for your partner and family or friends to help with taking care of the child so you may rest as well. Q. #asktheexpert During my 6th month, I underwent a glucose tolerance test, resulting in 171. The following day, I took a blood test without drinking glucose, revealing 141. The next day, after fasting and then 2 hours post-food, my blood sugar levels were 77 and 103 respectively. Two days later, I experienced dizziness and continuous vomiting. On that day, my blood sugar levels tested at 69. I am confused about my current sugar levels. Do I have GDM?. Now, I am controlling my sugar intake, and I believe I have lost weight. However, the baby's movements are all good.
