Bowed Legs in Babies & Toddlers
When babies stand up and walk, it's a milestone for their parents. However, sometimes, children have bowed legs or knocked knees (the reverse of bowed legs). If your child displays this health condition, here's everything you need to know about bow-leggedness in babies.
What Does Bowed Legs Mean?
Bowed legs in infants is a situation wherein a child’s feet and ankles touch, but not his knees. It starts becoming noticeable as the child tries to stand.
Are Bowlegs Normal In Babies?
Bowed legs are perfectly normal in children, especially when they're just learning to walk. But they can become a concern over time. Most children have bowed legs because of the foetal position, but it normally corrects itself over time. As children develop better muscles in their legs and learn how to stand and walk, their legs straighten out.
Symptoms of Bow-Leggedness in Babies
Bowed legs are easily noticeable in children. When your child's legs don't straighten out even after toddlerhood, it's a cause for concern.
The symptoms of bow-leggedness in babies include:
Awkward walking pattern (i.e. not direct or forward)
Lack of coordination in movement
Turning in of the feet (also known as in-toeing)
Moderate pain or discomfort
Causes
As mentioned above, bowed legs are quite normal in children because of the position they've been in, in the womb. Their legs haven't had time to straighten out. Other causes of bowed legs include:
1. Physiological Genu Varum
A variation in normal appearance across children that results in some toddlers appearing more bow-legged than others.
2. Blount’s Disease
A disease resulting in the abnormal growth of the tibia (shinbone).
3. Rickets
A metabolic disorder that affects growth in children.
4. Bone Dysplasia
An uncommon hereditary condition wherein the growth of joints and bones is abnormal.
5. Deficiency of Vitamin D
A lack of vitamin D can weaken a child’s legs, causing them to become bowed.
6. Bowing Fractures
A result of injury, this happens when the bone bends but doesn't break and results in swelling or pain.
7. Lead or Fluoride Poisoning
A very rare process where lead or fluoride in the body poisons the tissue of the bone, creating more un-mineralized material in the bone and allowing them to weaken over time, potentially leading to bowing.
What Makes Babies Prone to Developing Bowed Legs?
Bowlegs in toddlers and older children is often due to Blount disease. Blount disease is common in kids who:
Are overweight
Have started walking at an early age
Have a family history of bowed legs
How Long Does This Condition Last?
Bowed legs normally last until 24 months after the baby begins to walk, usually disappearing by 3 years of age. If, however, the curve of your child's legs appears to be extreme, mention it to your paediatrician at your next appointment.
Diagnosis of Bowed Legs in Infants
Your doctor will conduct a brief examination to see how severe the curve in the legs is. Then, he/she will look at your child's medical history and conduct tests to determine what the issue may be.
In most of the cases, the diagnosis is as follows:
1. Physical Examination
The doctor will physically examine your child to observe the curve of the bow and determine the severity of the case.
2. Blood Test
Blood tests will be performed to determine if there's a deficiency of vitamin D.
3. X-Ray
An X-ray may be conducted to rule out Blount’s disease.
4. Other Tests
The doctor may also try to rule out other diseases affecting the legs, such as rickets.
Treatment for Bowed Legs
Bowed legs are rarely treated, especially in children. Severely curved legs may require surgery, but this may only be done when the child is older. While braces and other corrective shoes have been used in the past, they are not recommended.
1. Non-Surgical Treatment Options
For most children with bowed legs, they will be seen every six months by the doctor until the problem resolves itself.
Referred to a specialist to help manage symptoms of Blount’s disease or Rickets.
2. Surgical Treatment Options
Guided Growth Surgery
Surgery is done on the growth plate of the healthy shinbone to allow the abnormal side of the shinbone time to catch up, thus helping to correct the problem and straighten the child’s legs in accordance with their natural growth.
Tibial Osteotomy
In this case, surgery is done on the shinbone via a cut just below the knee, and the shinbone is then reshaped to help correct its alignment. The bone is normally held in place by screws or some sort of plate during the recovery process.
What If the Bowed Legs Are Left Untreated?
Having bowed legs can cause complications later in life. These include:
Arthritis
Stress on the knees and hips
Bone and joint problems
Difficulty walking
When Should You Worry?
If your child's legs remain bowed beyond three years of age, you may need to consult a specialist. Also, look for the following symptoms:
Difficulty walking
Problems with advanced forms of movement, like running
Inability to stand upright
Muscle and bone-related problems
Tips to Look After Children With Bowed Legs
Here are some things you should do if your little one has bowed legs:
1. Do Your Research
Read up about the condition online and understand what is affecting your child and how you can provide support.
2. Get Proper Shoes
Giving your child the right pair of shoes can help to manage bowed legs.
3. Ensure He Eats the Right Foods
Resolving diet and nutrition issues like a vitamin D deficiency can increase the chances of your child’s bowed legs straightening out.
4. Keep Up the Doctor's Appointments
Take your child to the specialist and don't miss the appointments!
5. Speak Positively
Don't crib about your baby's issues and provide emotional support and stability.
6. Teach Your Child Yoga
Let your child do a few basic yoga asanas every day.
7. Pay Attention to Weight Management
If your child's weight is worsening the condition of bowed legs, take steps to maintain his weight.
Bowed legs usually disappear by two years of age. This condition rarely requires surgery.

When Do Babies Start Remembering Things?
Does your newborn remember the song that made him laugh yesterday? Or will he remember the soothing touch of his grandmother’s hands? Just when does a newborn’s memory develop?
As parents we have this question in mind - when do babies start remembering things? Is it right from birth or may be a little later, after a year or so? Moreover, since babies learn to speak almost when they are a year old it’s hard to tell what our babies are thinking and how good their memories are, since they can’t communicate verbally. Well, there has been research around the area of memory development of children that is quite interesting.
New Age Research on Your Baby’s Memory
Some of the new age research challenges the concept that very young children do not have memories at all. It has been found that they do develop memories as early as they are born and even in the mother’s womb. Psychologists say that these memories are directly stored in the sub conscious mind of the child. When a child is newly born there isn’t a stark difference between conscious and sub conscious mind. All experiences are easily transferred from the conscious mind to the sub conscious mind. We feel that children do not have memories, however the real fact is that the memories are stored deep down in the sub conscious mind.
Pre-Natal Memory Development
A study in early 2000’s found that children begin to develop short term memory right when they are in the mother’s womb. A very common example of this relates to mothers who listen to a particular song repeatedly during pregnancy and enjoy it or feel happy after listening to it. After the birth of the child, even the child shows similar reaction when that same song is being played!
What Do Newborns Remember?
Newborns remember or rather recognise some of the things they have heard when they are in mother’s womb. In the first two months, your baby can recognise familiar faces and voices, especially the ones he has heard every day. Newborns can recognise their mother’s voice at birth. This indicates some level of short term memory development.
Your baby’s recognition memory increases dramatically in the first year of birth. Some experiments on this subject show that at three months, babies can remember new pictures or toys shown to them a few days ago.
Memory Development Between Six to Twelve Months
During this period there is a stark development in the memories of babies, leading to recognition of familiar places and people. This also leads to an emotional reaction in the baby which means development of a positive or negative reaction to a person or place. This reaction depends on the experience and recognition of that person or place in the memory of the baby.
Your Role in Baby’s Memory Development
Remember this- most of the memories during infanthood are short term memories. Hence a child can remember things or recall memory from three years onwards. It takes time for an infant’s brain to form long term memory structure.
Your role is very important in the development of a child’s memory. Through various memory boosting exercises and games, parents can enhance the memory development of their child. Baby sign language is another good way for parents to help older babies develop their working memory.
So yes, babies do remember things. Which ones, we do not know for sure, but we'll learn that as we discover our little ones more! Read more

The Story of My Rainbow Baby
What does it mean when I say that my daughter is my 'Rainbow Baby'? A 'Rainbow Baby' is a baby that is born following a miscarriage or an infant loss. Just like a beautiful and bright rainbow comes after a storm and gives hope of things getting better, a rainbow baby also brings light in the parent's life after going through the loss of a baby due to miscarriage. We use the term "rainbow" quite often, especially when we have kids around. So often that even our pictures are loaded with them. But what meaning does it hold when I say that she is my Rainbow baby?
My husband and I decided to have a baby. My pregnancy happened soon enough. We were on top of the world sharing our sweet news with friends and family. Though the conditions in my pregnancy were a little complicated, it was all forgotten in the joy we had. One morning, we got to know that we have lost our baby in a miscarriage. We were devastated to the core with no family around us to guide and support as we resided out of India. After the depression, medication and trying for many months, I had almost given up. But then, there it was! A pregnancy test I had taken with no expectations turned out to be positive. We faced a lot during the second pregnancy too. Even a similar miscarriage incident occurred where we thought we lost the baby again. But against all odds, that day turned out to be the day I heard the heartbeat of my baby for the first time. I experienced extreme joy during my whole pregnancy along with tremendous fear overriding it. This was the fear that I might lose my baby any day any minute. The day of my delivery arrived. There were complications, my baby had to struggle for her breath inside me and I had to undergo an emergency C-section. That's how she came into our lives! Our daughter, our rainbow baby - perfectly healthy and happy!
We never forget our angel babies, but the rainbow babies help the depressed parents to have a new hope. They especially help the parents who've lost their grown child right from their arms to fate, to live through the unimaginable pain and sadness. My rainbow baby somehow lives perfectly to the name. The joy she brought into our lives has been extraordinary. We can't imagine our lives without this bundle of joy that God has blessed us with.
Cheers to all the Mamas and their rainbow babies!

3 Nutritional Foods for Kids to Stay Sharp and Healthy
Even though we were children ourselves at one point, raising them as adults is still quite a challenge. You know what I mean—you know what’s best for them, and yet, try as you might, they think they’re the ones who know better. Do you know what’s worse? The fact that this is especially true when it comes to food. Their developing bodies and brains need food that’s rich in vitamins and minerals so they can grow strong and healthy, but they think that anything green is icky, anything that’s not coated in sugar is a no-no, and anything fried is an immediate yes. What if I were to tell you that all of that could change? Well, maybe not change. Instilling the value of healthy food in them will have to be up to you, but something you can do in the meantime is prepare nutritional foods for kids you know they’ll love because they taste so good. As it happens to be, you’ll love them too because every bite will keep their minds sharp and their bodies strong. Sounds good, right? Of course it does—I’m talking about healthy food for kids they’ll actually eat and want more of!With that in mind, let’s move onto the topic at hand: 3 nutritional foods for kids that’ll keep them sharp and healthy. As you’ll soon see, we’re going to cover 3 main ingredients that not only present many benefits of healthy food for kids, but can also be worked into MANY tasty recipes that ensure nutrition and a clean plate. Let’s get started!
1. Eggs
Eggs are a staple of most diets, especially when it comes to breakfast. For kids, eggs are a must because one large egg has about six grams of protein and a decent amount of vitamins A, B, D and iron, and some are even fortified with omega-3 fatty acids, which play a part in kids' brain development. Now that we know that eggs are indeed good and healthy, let’s talk about what you can do with them. For starters, you have all the classics like scrambled eggs, fried eggs, boiled eggs, and so on and so on. That’s all well and good, and while most kids do enjoy the savouriness of classic egg dishes you can whip up in minutes, some just aren’t convinced. That’s where the versatility of the egg comes in. For example, by whipping the egg whites separately until they’re fluffy and cloud-like, and then folding in the whipped yolk, you can create fluffy omelettes that are MUCH more fun and entertaining to eat. Speaking of whipping your yolk, you can also create your own homemade mayo for kids that’s healthier and tastier than what you’ll find in your grocery store. And then there are two-ingredient pancakes that only require bananas and eggs. The point being that eggs are a staple ingredient that can be worked into MANY recipes your kids will love.
2. Zucchinis
Like we did with eggs, let’s start our zucchini talk with its numerous benefits. For one, they’re low in calories, carbs and sugar, and high in essential nutrients like potassium, manganese, and antioxidants like vitamins A and C. Second, zucchinis have anti-inflammatory properties that improve heart health and digestion. Third, zucchinis can aid in diabetes prevention because they’re low in carbs and sugar, and are so nutrient-dense. In addition, the polyacrylamide fibres you’ll get from them also have special benefits for blood sugar regulation.Although your kids may not like the idea of eating a zucchini, you have a lot of leeway with their preparation. For example, you can slice them really thin and make zucchini chips. You can also switch them out with potatoes by breading them and making zucchini fries as a healthier alternative. And if your kids like pasta, you can also get a spiraliser and make some noodles they’re sure to love, or slice them really thin and use them in lasagne. The versatility of the zucchini is truly inspiring.
3. Avocados
Ah, avocados. You’ve undoubtedly heard about avocados recently, so we’ll stick with the basics of nutrition here. A good source of healthy monounsaturated fats for your kids that decrease inflammation and keep cholesterol levels healthy, avocados also have more potassium than bananas, and are loaded with fibre—about one fourth of the fibre you should consume per day is in a 100 gram serving! They also have a lot of vitamins B, C and K, and are a good source of folate as well.Like eggs and zucchinis, avocados are also incredibly versatile. For example, apart from classics like guacamole and avocado toast, you can also make avocado pesto as a more nutritious alternative. You can also bread them and make avocado fries that are as healthy as they are filling. And if your kids are especially predisposed to sweet treats, you have the option of making avocado brownies, ice cream, fudge, and so many other dessert options that are all possible because of how creamy avocados are.
Picky as kids are, you can always ensure they eat everything they’re supposed to by metaphorically dressing it up and creating dishes they’ll actually want. Like we covered today, this includes preparing it in ways you may not have thought of before, and switching out ingredients for healthier alternatives. Even though we didn’t cover it today, you can also use things like food processors to create your own sauces and nut butters, cold press juicers to make more nutritious beverages, and air fryers to make fried foods with little to no oil.
Enjoy!

Does Vitamin D Affect Your Fertility?
Getting pregnant is a special joy experienced by moms around the world. However, sometimes due to certain deficiencies in the body, your fertility may get affected, and your dream of becoming a mother may seem a bit far-fetched. One such kind of deficiency that may occur in your body and affect your fertility is vitamin D deficiency. So, how exactly this deficiency affects your fertility, if you wish to know more on this topic, we suggest that you read the following article for the same.
What is Vitamin D?
Most of us have heard about vitamin D and how it is important for us. However, many may wonder what exactly does this vitamin do and why it is so important for many vital functions in our body. Well, vitamin D is a vitamin that is produced by our skin in response to sunlight exposure. Apart from the sunlight this important vitamin can also be obtained from various food sources and can also be taken in the form of supplements. This vitamin is also known as the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D is also a hormone that is required by our body for some of its vital functions. This fat-soluble vitamin is essential for many functions in our body, which may include reproductive functions too.
How Does Vitamin D Help to Improve Fertility?
Apart from being linked to various health benefits, vitamin D and female fertility also have a strong relation. This vitamin helps the body in creating sex hormones. The apt amount of sex hormones in the body ensures better fertility, and it also lowers the chances of having any medical issues such as PCOS, PMS and even infertility issues. Lack of vitamin D may affect men's fertility too, as it may lead to impaired sperm motility, low sperm count and other such issues. Therefore, there are many vitamin D benefits for fertility, and you should get ample amounts of it to increase your chances of conception.
Ideal Vitamin D Level for Fertility & Successful Pregnancy
There have been certain studies that prove the success rate of various fertility treatments because of ample amounts of vitamin D in the body. However, there has not been enough scientific evidence available that is indicative of the fact that 30ng/ml or higher levels of vitamin D in the body increase the chances of having a successful pregnancy. In one of the studies, it was observed that 25-OH vitamin D > 30ng/ml of vitamin d for fertility dosage might improve your chances of getting pregnant.
How to Get More Vitamin D?
The amount of vitamin D requirements may vary from person to person; therefore, before you follow any of the below-mentioned recommendations to pep up your vitamin levels, you should get a lab test done. Here are some ways of getting more vitamin D:
1. Exposure to Sunlight
Sunlight is one the best and most effective ways of getting your daily dose of vitamin D. You may bask yourself in unprotected and unadulterated sunlight for approximately 15 to 20 minutes every day.
2. Food Sources
If you are not able to avail the sunlight benefit you may consider including some of the following food items to pep up your vitamin levels:
Eggs
Cod-liver oil
Mackerel
Salmon
Sardines
Grass-fed beef
Shiitake and button mushrooms
These are some of the sources of vitamin D rich foods that you may consume.
Vitamin D Deficiency and Fertility
Though there are still many ongoing studies to prove the relation between vitamin D deficiency on fertility and reproductive capacity, however, there is substantial evidence available which indicates positive effects of vitamin D supplementation on conception through IVF. There has also been a study indicating the positive effects of this vitamin on the male fertility.
So, if you are wondering, can low vitamin D cause infertility? Well, to get a full-proof answer to that question, we may have to wait until more substantial studies come forward. Meanwhile, what you may do is, increase your vitamin D intake if you are planning on getting pregnant and increase your chances of conception.
Should You Take Vitamin D Supplements to Boost Fertility?
Self-medication or taking any kinds of supplements on your own may not be a good idea. Vitamin D supplements must be taken if it has been prescribed by your doctor. Before prescribing you any kind of supplements, your doctor will first establish your deficiency levels by suggesting some lab tests. Your doctor may recommend supplements that may contain vitamin D3 with vitamin K2. Vitamin K2 is very important for the proper absorption of calcium and vitamin D by the bones, and it also ensures that does not go into the arteries.
You may be prescribed supplements to pep up your fertility, but it cannot replace any fertility treatment that you may have to undergo. Therefore, if you are 35+ years and you have been having unprotected sex for more than a year, you should meet a specialist to get your reproductive health assessed before you plan to take any vitamin D supplements.
Vitamin D can be easily produced by our body if you get adequate amounts of sun exposure. However, multiple factors may affect the absorption of this vitamin by your skin. Well, this may happen if you are a dark-skinned woman or you may be overweight. If you have any such issues that may fiddle with your natural vitamin D absorption, you may like to meet your doctor, especially when you are trying to pregnant.
A healthy body is vital to become pregnant and nurture a baby in your womb. Therefore, if you plan to get pregnant, you may like to get yourself thoroughly examined to see if your body has any kind of deficiencies. Once any kind of deficiencies is established, your doctor may help your guide how you may overcome that. Talk to your healthcare provider to know more about vitamin D deficiency.

Boredom in Kids Is Panic for Parents
As parents, we are always afraid of what our kids might do the entire day? What if they get bored? In this panic state, you keep them busy with lots of toys and activities that will make them mentally and physically exhausted.
Most times, parents give more screen time to their kids to avoid boredom for the little ones? However, that is the biggest mistake parents commit, ending up in the child’s screen addiction. With more screen time, kids get tired mentally and lazy physically. This leads to becoming an irritable, non-creative, obese, and disoriented lazy kid.
Now the pertinent question is, “Is it okay if they feel bored?” The reply to the question is, “YES, and it is completely okay to feel bored sometimes.” Allow your kids to feel bored, and let them think about how and what they would want to do? Allowing the kids to think will help strengthen their imagination and creativity. Kids need their own space; allow them to perform role-plays, make stories, read picture books, dance, recite, and do whatever they wish to.
As parents, you can solve issues related to boredom in two ways:
Enable them to play or perform any activity in which they feel completely safe. Allow the kids to do things the way they want.
If you feel they need your help in playing or any activities, don’t rush to help them. Observe how they deal with it and wait until they ask for help. Contrarily, offer help when you feel the activity or game is taking longer than the usual time, and your kid may feel disappointed or demotivated.
Praise your kid’s efforts. In the process of looking for solutions, kids become more curious and you feel more confident.
Allow kids to do whatever they want to until there are chances they may hurt themselves or damage any property.
Keep an eye on them to ensure they don’t feel hurt or damage any property. In such circumstances, warn them of the situation and possible consequences, and ask them to stop. Make them understand the reasons for stopping them and appreciate for understanding the situation.
If they can’t find any solution to their boredom while busy with household chores, include them in your daily work, like sorting vegetables and fruits, making dough, folding clothes, hanging clothes on the hangar, rolling chapati, arranging vessels, etc. Besides helping them learn basic household tasks, these activities strengthen their fine motor movements and hand & mind coordination.
