How to Get Pregnant After Stopping the Use of the Depo-Provera Shot
If you are planning to conceive but have been taking the birth control injection called Depo-Provera to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, then you may want to know more about how to conceive after stopping the injections. One shot of Depo-Provera gives you three months of protection from an unplanned pregnancy. It is 97% effective and very reliable. However, it may take some time for you to get pregnant after stopping the use of the Depo-Provera shot.
What Is the Depo Shot and How Does it Work?
Depo-Provera is the name of an injectable contraceptive medication, also known as depot medroxyprogesterone acetate or DMPA. One injection of this medication can provide 3 months of dependable birth control. Depo-Provera contains progestin, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Progestin reduces ovulation and thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to move through the reproductive canal. This way, even if ovulation occurs, the sperm won't be able to reach the egg in the fallopian tube and fertilise it. The Depo injection is required every 90 days, unlike birth control pills that need to be taken daily. This is due to the fact that the injection creates a depot or storage reserve of progestin in the body at the site of the injection.
Once you take the injection, the progesterone level in the body rises steadily and peaks at 3 weeks, after which the level begins to gradually reduce. Around 50% of women who take regular Depo injections for a year will stop menstruating. Once the progesterone levels in the body decrease, the process of ovulation and menstruation begin once again.
Does the Depo Shot Cause Temporary Infertility?
The Depo shot suppresses ovulation by increasing the level of progesterone in the body. As a result, it can cause temporary infertility for up to 2 years. Once all the progesterone in the body is eliminated, your fertility will return, and your body will resume ovulating and menstruating. Many women tend to resume their regular monthly cycle 5 months after their last Depo injections. However, it may take up to 22 months for some women to regain their fertility post the last injection.
Another aspect that comes into play with regards to fertility is the weight of the woman. It appears that fertility returns more quickly in women of healthy weight (i.e., in accordance with their height and health conditions) than those who are overweight. Also, it doesn't matter whether you've used the Depo-Provera shot for about 6 months or even for a couple of years; your fertility will most likely return in the same time period, in both cases.
Things You Can Do to Get Pregnant Fast After Stopping the Depo Shot
Pregnancy after a Depo-Provera injection can take a while, and you need to be patient as well as persistent in your efforts to conceive. Following are the things you can do to get pregnant fast after stopping the Depo shot:
Wait for your monthly cycle to return. Meanwhile, keep having regular unprotected intercourse in order to conceive. Ideally, you should wait for at least 3 months after your last Depo shot before you begin trying.
Start taking prenatal vitamins so that your body has the nutrients required to support a pregnancy.
Track your periods and make a note of when they become regular.
Track your ovulation using ovulation test kits and basal body temperature charts. This way, you can accurately predict when you are ovulating and have sexual intercourse on that day to get pregnant.
Plan ahead and stop the Depo shots far in advance of the time you want to get pregnant. This will give enough time to get rid of the excess progesterone from your body. It could take at least 5 months after your last shot for you to be able to conceive.
Get plenty of exercise to flush toxins and waste out of your system more efficiently. Exercise helps increase your metabolism, and the associated weight loss can also help increase your fertility.
Ovulation After Stopping the Depo Provera Injection
There are some ways to know if your fertility has returned to normal after stopping the Depo shot:
1. Return of Your Regular Menstrual Cycle
If your periods resume, it means that you are ovulating normally. Regular monthly cycles should be between 21 to 35 days from the start of one period to the start of the next period. Your cycles should also be consistent, with a small variation of 2 to 5 days. If there is a wide variation between your monthly cycles, it means you may not be ovulating regularly. Talk to your doctor if this is the case. The amount of bleeding should be normal; neither too light nor too heavy. If there is only spotting or very heavy bleeding, it is a sign of irregular menstruation.
2. Testing Positive on an Ovulation Predictor Kit
If you get a positive result on an ovulation predictor stick, it means that you are definitely ovulating. These over-the-counter test kits are available in pharmacies and are similar to home pregnancy test kits. You need to use urine to test your hormone levels to predict if you are ovulating. The test looks for the Luteinizing Hormone or LH, which increases sharply just before ovulation.
3. Detecting Ovulation Using a Basal Body Temperature Chart
Your basal body temperature (BBT) is the one when your body is at complete rest. This changes when you are ovulating. You can track this at home with a thermometer and a BBT chart. When you ovulate, your BBT will spike and remain high until your period starts. Then, it will decrease and stay the same until you ovulate again. By measuring and tracking your BBT for a few cycles, you can accurately predict when you are going to ovulate.
Depo Detox Diet to Get Pregnant
Many women try out a Depo detox diet to get pregnant after stopping the Depo shot. This is supposed to help your body eliminate all the excess synthetic progesterone from the liver faster. However, while naturopathy prescribes this diet, it hasn't been confirmed how effective it actually is. The detox diet includes:
Drinking a lot of water
Consuming fresh fruits and vegetables
Staying off spicy, oily junk food
Drinking herbal teas
Including dandelion root, milk thistle, and turmeric in your diet
Check with your obstetrician before going on a detox diet and including any new foods in your daily menu. This is because some of the herbs and new foods may not be suitable for you and may also aggravate any underlying condition that you already have. You could also be allergic to one or more of these herbs. Having an allergic reaction is not good for your body if you are trying to get pregnant.
What Are the Chances of Getting Pregnant After Receiving Only One Depo Shot?
A single shot of Depo gives you 3 months of protection against unplanned pregnancy. However, getting pregnant after one Depo shot can take some time. Some women have become pregnant just four months after their last Depo shot. However, it has been found that it takes an average of at least 10 months for women to get pregnant after a single Depo shot. This is because it takes that long for all the excess synthetic progesterone to get eliminated from the body.
FAQs
If you want to become pregnant after stopping Depo injections, you may have several questions about how long it will take for you to conceive. Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about getting pregnant after a Depo shot:
1. How Long Will it Take to Get Pregnant After Stopping a Depo Shot?
It takes an average of 10 months for most women to conceive after stopping the Depo shot. However, keep trying as some women were able to get pregnant just 4 months after their last Depo shot. It depends on how much time your body takes to flush out all the synthetic progesterone from the liver. Once all the progesterone is eliminated from your body, you will resume having regular periods and will start ovulating every month.
2. After a Depo Shot, Can I Get Pregnant Even If My Normal Period Has Not Returned?
Yes, you can get pregnant after a Depo shot even if your regular period has not returned. This is because the body can ovulate without a period, too. You normally ovulate for around 2 weeks before your period. However, you will know for sure if you are ovulating when you have a regular monthly cycle and can track your ovulation and periods.
Getting pregnant after stopping Depo Provera shots can take up to 10 months after the last shot. It takes time for you to regain your fertility after the Depo shot. Some women have reported taking up to 2 years' time to get pregnant after stopping Depo. If you have been trying to conceive for a year after Depo but without any success, then you should consult your obstetrician who may recommend a fertility specialist.

10 Tips for Staying Healthy during Twin Pregnancy
Having twins is a surprise that most parents are caught off guard by. Carrying more than one baby automatically puts you in the category of a high-risk pregnancy. The high risk here isn’t necessarily something to worry about; it just means the doctors will closely follow your pregnancy. If you are carrying twins, here are a few tips for a healthy twin pregnancy that you’ll find helpful.
How to Take Care of Twin Pregnancy - 10 Best Tips
Of course, the sudden news of twins by the doctor has shocked you. You don't know whether to be delighted or to worry. But what you must remember is that you have to deal with it, happily or by being worried. So, deal with it happily, here's how. Below are some of the tips you can try to deal twin pregnancy:
1. Eat Healthy and Eat for Three
The expression eating for two holds good for singleton pregnancies and the only extra energy needed is about 300 calories a day for a healthy baby. But, when you’re expecting twins your calorie needs go up to 600 calories per day. That doesn’t mean eating junk food; focus on getting 5 to 7 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Lean protein is also good to maintain your sugar levels and try and avoid hypoglycemia. Prenatal vitamins along with 1mg of folic acid and iron supplements are recommended for all twin pregnancies. A weight gain of 16 to 26 kilos is normal for a mother with normal BMI.
2. Know What a High-Risk Pregnancy Is
Mothers expecting twins are often put into the high-risk pool. Although it sounds frightening, it doesn’t mean something will go wrong. High risk in your case could mean things like bed rest, preterm labour, and cesarean birth. Read about different precautions you need to take during twin pregnancy to know more about it and make an appointment with a high-risk specialist so your questions and worries can be resolved.
3. Stay Active as Much as You Can
Staying active helps your body maintain good functionality and helps avoid back and joint aches. Gentle exercises such as yoga is also recommended to help tone your muscles and keep them ready for labour. Staying active also reduces your risk of gestational diabetes which is caused by your placenta secreting an anti-insulin hormone. Even if the pregnancy is complicated by partial bed rest, ask your doctor if you can continue with yoga and pilates to keep your muscle toned and avoid body aches.
4. Take All The Help You Can Get
A support system surprisingly makes a lot of difference to all mothers, especially when babies arrive in sets. Anybody who offers to help, even if they don’t really mean it, should be assigned a task. Make a list of all the tasks that you can delegate; be it preparing food, doing laundry, dishes or changing diapers. If your mother has come to stay with you to help you with all your needs; it would be an enormous help and the emotional support you can get from her would be unmatchable. If you can afford it, hire a housekeeper for the first few months postpartum, so you have more time for your babies.
5. Join a Support Group
Networking with other moms whether in your neighbourhood or on social media is a great idea to get different relevant advice during times of stress. Being in multiple clubs can also be very helpful as you may not always agree with the parenting philosophies of a club. Search for groups that share similar notions of parenting as you do.
6. Lay Down on Your Side
20 weeks into the pregnancy is when most mothers are recommended to start sleeping on their side, but when carrying twins, 16 weeks is suggested. The uterus growing in size can compress the blood vessels restricting the blood flow back to your heart. This can make you feel dizzy or weak. You may also experience swelling more than normal, so this is a good time to buy compression stockings.
7. Twins Do Not Mean Twice the Worry
As soon as you find out you’re having twins, you may start researching it and reading about the risks and complications of twin pregnancy. Although the risk is slightly higher, you will be closely monitored by your doctor. 90% of twin pregnancies make it past 32 weeks and deliver healthy babies, so try not to fret about it. A twin pregnancy can make you anxious, but your doctor will watch out for preterm labour, high blood pressure, and other risks and guide you well.
8. Find Good Resources
Read self-help books that offer plenty of twins baby pregnancy tips. There are many well-written books that give good advice on pregnancy and raising babies to their toddler years. You might also search for blogs and video channels that do the same.
9. Prepare Well in Advance
Going by numbers, 60% of mothers in case of twin pregnancies deliver before 37 weeks. The complications associated with twins usually occur in babies that are born before 32 weeks which is about 10% of the case. Therefore schedule your baby shower early and try to have your baby’s nursery ready by 30 weeks. Have a few baby outfits on hand but keep their tags on, in case you need to exchange them as you can’t be sure what size your babies might be. Once you’re over 30 weeks, have your emergency numbers and cell phone at arm’s length at all times. If your first responders are your neighbours, friends or family, have a contingency drill planned out.
10. Search for Professional Care
If you are up for it, hiring a professional nurse who is trained in caring for pregnant women is a good idea instead of a midwife. Trained nurses know better ways to deal with pregnant women who are at high-risk pregnancies. The added benefits will also be the ease at which you can get an appointment with the gynaecologist through your nurse. Regular visits to your doctor are imperative. Discuss with them everything about your physical and mental state and ask for advice specific to your condition.
With an optimistic attitude and good care, you can sail through your twin pregnancy to a healthy delivery.

4 Ways Fruit Juice Triggers Diarrhoea In Children and How to Tackle Them
Fruit juices are kids' favourites indeed! We think fruit juice is a natural, healthy drink that can contribute to the recommended serves of 2 fruits per day. However, nutritionally speaking it doesn’t come close to the nutritional value of eating fresh, whole fruit. Forget the gains, it may make you lose vital fluid and electrolytes from the body. Surprised? Yes, too much fruit juice can trigger diarrhoea in children.
Diarrhoea is characterised as having frequent bowel movements that may be loose or watery in nature. Your child may experience abdominal cramps or belly pain. It is usually caused by bacterial or viral infections, parasites, bowel disorders, medication reaction and sensitivities or allergies to foods. Of the several reasons, consumption of excess fruit juice is assuming significant importance. Thanks to the abundance of the so-called fresh, 100% natural fruit juices on the shelves!
Fruit juice can cause diarrhoea because of these reasons:
1. High Sorbitol Content
Many juices contain sorbitol, a non-digestible form of sugar. Excess sorbitol levels cause the body to try to dilute the sugar by pulling water from the bloodstream into the intestine, which causes loose stools. Prunes are rich in sorbitol, and apple, pear, peach, and cherry juice are also fairly high in sorbitol. Cutting back on fruit juice and sugary drinks should solve the problem in a week or so.
Instead: You may try one of the low sorbitol fruits, such as pineapples, oranges, strawberries, kiwi, bananas, etc. Also, try and serve them as whole or cut fruits instead of pulp or juice form (according to age of your child). Consider the following tips to get your children to eat fruits.
2. High Fructose (fruit sugar) Levels
The diarrhoea-causing factor in fruits can also be the fruit sugar- fructose. While most people can eat fructose without difficulty, some others develop diarrhoea, gas and bloating when they consume the sugar. Many people, especially children, have a limit on the amount of fructose and sorbitol they can absorb.
Instead: Try one of the low fructose fruits like berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, etc.), citrus fruits (oranges, limes, etc.), grapefruit, avocado, etc.
3. Allergic Response To The Fruit
Your kid may be allergic or intolerant to the fruit ingested. Diarrhoea can be one bodily reaction for the same. Orange juice can cause such an allergic response in young children.
Take due precaution: If you are trying any fruit for your child for the first time, it is best to consult the paediatrician, and take into account your and your partner's family history with respect to food allergies.
4. Presence of Harmful Bacteria
In some circumstances, fresh juices that have not been pasteurised can become infected with harmful bacteria that can make your child sick, causing gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhoea. Hence, it is advisable to always get pasteurised juices.
Take due precaution: Make sure you thoroughly wash the fruits you buy before consumption. Bacterial and germ build-up will be more probable in stored juices, so always insist on freshly made fruit juices, and better still - homemade fruit juices. Never let fruit juice stand on the counter or in the fridge before consuming it.
Other Side Effects of Excess Fruit Juice
Ruins kids' appetite for healthier foods - Juice fills up the stomach so that the child doesn’t feel hungry and won’t eat. And with the notorious picky eaters that most of us have, we can imagine the problem scaling up heights!
Causes tooth decay because of high sugar levels.
Causes regurgitation - Acidic fruit juices if had in a hurry by your pre-schooler and followed by any rigorous physical activity (like they generally do), may result in vomiting.
Even as treatment for diarrhoea, NEVER administer sweetened fluids like fizzy drinks, athletic drinks, sugar water, and undiluted fruit juices. All of these contain sugar, which draws water into the intestine and makes the diarrhoea worse. Boiled and cooled water or ORS solution are recommended by experts for replenishing the lost fluids and electrolytes.
Juice is also not recommended for babies younger than 12 months. If your child's age is 12 months or older, limit the fruit juice intake to 3/4 cup (6 ounces) of juice per day. Older children (age 7 and older) can have up to 8 to 12 ounces of fruit juice a day. For your pre-schooler, water is the best fluid, followed by low-fat milk. Fruit juices, if provided, should not exceed 200 ml per day.
What About Daily Vitamins and Minerals?
Hence, for the daily dose of vital vitamins and minerals, fibre and the required calories, without increasing the risk of diarrhoea, eat whole fruits rather than drinking juices. If your child likes fruit juice a lot, make sure that it’s well diluted with water and only drunk at mealtimes, and not before.
Does your preschooler enjoy fruit juice? What is his favourite fluid in case you restrict him from juices? Let us know in the comments section below. Read more

To Be or Not to Be - That is the Question!
My husband and I found ourselves in Hamlet's situation when we decided to raise our child without a religion backing him up.
Being an atheist (I wouldn't say atheist because I do believe in God, what I don't believe in is religion) is not easy in our country. You have to give an explanation to everyone, be it your grandmom or the janitor of the building... because how can one not have a religion?
I have always wondered what religion is. Isn't religion meant to give one's life direction and lead it to the path of righteousness? All religions are meant to teach this. Why then has it become a necessity to label an individual with a particular religion?
I may be no parenting guru, but I know how I will raise my child.
I will not teach my child to categorise people on the basis of religion. As textbook cliche as it may sound, I will teach my child to follow the path of humanity.
The problem is that many still interlink religion with tradition. Religion, I believe is a progressive thought but tradition in most cases, if not all is regressive...it holds you back.
Religion as we know today is not what it was meant to be. It is a mutation of superstition and tradition. And this mutation has taken away the very essence of what religion stands for.
So yes, we decided to raise our child without religion and no, we will not change our thought process to please anybody. We will not let him blindly follow traditions which have outlived their purpose. It is our point of view... it might not be agreeable or acceptable to others and that is okay. Why limit oneself to the confines of a particular thing? Why can't a person take the best of all that life has to offer and grow?
We are a firm believer of the fact that every person has the right to live her life on her own terms. We want the same for our son. We gave him life, its true but that doesn't give us the privilege to control his life. Sure, we will guide him and make decisions for him till such time he is capable to do that for himself... and that time will come sooner rather than later. The idea is to let him carve out his life for himself, the way he desires without worrying about societal norms.
Yes, we might disagree but who are we to judge what he thinks is right for him. And frankly, if my child has a strong head on his shoulders... to be able to stand by his choices even if it means disagreeing with us... somewhere deep down I know, we would be proud of him.
As long as he doesn't harm another living soul, we will stand by his choices. The Gods won't mind... preachers, we don't care about!

10 tips to follow this Quarantine in absence of Salon services
Though lockdown being extended in many states to overcome this pandemic is a good news, it doesn't seem so good when I look into a mirror.
Even though I have been following some beauty regimes to look like a human for all those con calls, I do miss the expertise of my UrbanCompany beautician.
Here are the hacks/regimes I have been following to survive this lockdown without 'palour wali didi'.
1. Moisturize after every hand wash else they are gonna be as dry as the autumn leaf. Sadly, professional manicures are off duty. I keep a small bottle at dining table, that helps.
2. Exfoliate twice a week to get rid of those black heads and dead skin. Don't forget to apply face pack to close the pores.
3. Let your feet soak during headwash and pick up the foot scrubber while conditioner works its magic. So what if we can't have an actual pedicure, a quick one should work.
4. After shower, apply vaseline or foot cream or nipple care butter (it works) and wear cotton socks. This weather is not good for those innocent heels.
5. Pluck that unruly lone eyebrow hair before it becomes a part of the bush.
6. Learn to thread your upper lips on youtube. Practice on your knee before you go for that war. Plucking is not an option (atleast not for me. Can't bear it.)
7. Before you get the full growth, use Veet wax strips instead of hair removal cream or razor. Keeps those stupid hair at bay for a longer time. Hopefully, by then salon will open and will save you from agony.
8. Use roll on for underarms (Nivea works best) to prevent darkening due perspiration in this heat. No office ACs to keep us cool.
9. Turn the knob to cold water after enjoying that hot shower. Prevents dryness and closes pores.
10. Apply your favourite lipstick to forget about the unkempt parts of your face and look Fabulous!
Hope these tips help you. Share your hacks/tips/regime in the comments that you are following to face your mirror. Read more
