5 things about breastfeeding no one told me about
"The moment a child is born, a mother is also born." This quote cannot be truer considering the rush of emotions and things to do that come with becoming a mother. One of the first "new" things I encountered on becoming a mother for the first was that of breastfeeding. While I breastfed for quite sometime, there are a few learnings I picked up on my journey of breastfeeding which no one told me, but I’m glad I embraced it.
You will not get milk, the minute you start breastfeeding and stressing about it makes things worse. Colostrum is the first liquid which is produced for the first 2-4 days which looks clear or a golden yellow Color. It is liquid gold, rich in nutrients, highly concentrated and full of protein - the perfect first food for your little angel. The key to a woman’s mental health about breastfeeding is knowing that colostrum comes in small quantities naturally. Transitional milk then starts getting produced 2-5 days after delivery until 2 weeks, post which, mature milk is produced.
The power of pumping! I think it is vastly underestimated in breast milk production. Pumping after feeding empties the breasts making the body produce again to refill. Breast milk production follows a demand and supply method. The more the demand, the more the supply. If the baby is sick and may not feed that often it helps maintaining the supply. Manual breast pump and electric breast pumps are the options available. There are brands like Philips Avent and others which make good quality and convenient to use pumps. I personally have used the Philips Avent pump which is I found super comfortable and fast with few parts so cleaning and sterilising isn’t a hassle. I would personally prefer the electric pumps because it saves time and effort. Using either type of breast pumps has never been easier with the instruction manuals and videos available, it makes pumping a less daunting task than it appears.
Rooting is a natural reflex which babies are born with. It basically is the turning of the babies head towards the "root" - the mothers breast. But if the newborn hasn’t developed it yet, milk can be hand expressed to help guide their mouth to the nipple. It can also be triggered by gently stroking or touching the corners of their sweet little mouths and which mom wouldn’t love to do that ?! Sucking is also a natural reflex albeit different from rooting. When the roof of the mouth of the baby is stimulated, sucking comes in, allowing the baby to "drink". There is a possibility that a newborn may need help with these reflexes, it does not mean that breastfeeding is not possible. Any concerns regarding these reflexes should be discussed with a lactation specialist to get to the root of the issue and fix it.
Breastfeeding made me hungry all the time. There are many myths regarding diet during breastfeeding and while all advice may not be particularly wrong, it is best to consult a lactation specialist for proper guidance. Consuming a balanced diet which is rich in proteins is ideal. And importantly hydration is everything ! Since breast milk is composed of more than 80% water, replenishing the use of water in our bodies is critical to avoid getting dehydrated.
Every baby is different and so is the time they take to breastfeed. While there are some general numbers to get an idea, these aren’t set in stone and isn’t the best way to judge whether milk supply is enough or not. A better method would be to check for count of wet diapers. Newborns may nurse 20 minutes or even longer on one or both breasts, some may needs 8 sessions and some 12 or even more. Feeding often and on cue is the best way to keep stress at bay. For mothers like me, who are fussy, keeping track of the feeding schedule of babies using apps or diaries, kept me sane knowing that there is pattern and when to expect the next feed. Having said that, there should always be room for changes and updates in the baby’s feeding schedule as they grow.
All in all, questions about supply, about whether or not the child has had enough wet diapers, questions about your diet are all part of the breastfeeding journey. The key is to keep stress as far away as possible, eating a balanced diet and staying happy with the knowledge that your child is being given the best you can do and there is nothing better than that.

When Can Baby Hear - Newborn Hearing Development
The development of your baby’s ability to hear can be extremely important, this is because hearing is one of the senses that help your baby communicate. Your baby begins to listen to sounds and mimic them, thus, developing their ability to speak. They also listen to the sound of a parent for comfort. Hearing is actually one of the cornerstones of a baby's development, this doesn’t mean that your baby won’t grow if they can’t hear but it does mean they grow faster if they can.
How will your Baby React to Sound?
The first sense that your baby develops is hearing. In fact, it is a known fact that babies develop their hearing ability even before being born, this is one of the reasons a lot of parents play music or talk to their baby when they’re still in the womb. Your baby’s ability to react to sound has been developing for months before their birth and can be fully developed as early as a month after they are born. Even though their hearing is fully developed within the first month, your baby may only start to respond to sounds much later. You can also expect them to react to sounds in different ways, for instance, humming to your child while putting them to sleep can stop them from crying, the same can be said about when you have conversations with them.
How to Know if your Baby is Clearly Hearing or Not?
The process to understand if your baby is hearing clearly or not is done through a screening process, this screening is actually done when you’re baby is still in the hospital right after the delivery. If you are unsure of whether your baby can hear clearly or not, talk to your doctor, they will share the results of your baby’s auditory screening and if needed run another screening to ensure they can hear correctly.
When do Babies Start Hearing after Birth?
One of the most difficult questions to answer is when can your baby hear sounds for the first time, this is because the development of your child’s hearing, as mentioned is developed within the womb, the exact time they begin to hear is hard to estimate as it is case specific but you will notice if that they can hear sounds as they will kick in your belly more consistently when they hear a familiar sound, the voice of your partner can cause a reaction for instance. After birth, your baby’s hearing develops at an extremely rapid pace and will fully be developed between 4-7 weeks.
Baby Hearing Development
Monitoring your baby’s hearing development can be important for the first year after birth, here is a rough timeline of what you can expect in their hearing development.
0-2 months – Your baby’s hearing has fully developed, they may not respond to the sounds but through screenings done by your doctor, you can monitor her growth. This is around when they can clearly hear high-pitched sounds.
3 months – This is approximately when you can expect your baby to have some form of reaction to sounds, this is usually in the form of sound mimicking, you can expect them to gurgle or coo in response to your voice or other sounds. This is their way of trying to develop speech patterns as well.
6 months – This hearing milestone is when your baby will be more responsive to the subtler sounds, they may try mimicking sounds that aren’t familiar.
12 months – The final milestone for hearing, your baby can now recognize and respond to the most subtle or understated sounds. Expect them to even recognize their favourite songs or cartoon voices at this stage.
Things you can Do to Develop your Newborn's Hearing
There are always methods to help you develop your newborn baby’s hearing, here are a few tips to help you do that:
Have your baby around conversations, ask your partner to converse with them constantly and you should do the same as well.
Play calm, relaxing music, preferably instrumental, smooth jazz is known to help develop acoustic senses, calm your child down and develop their hearing, western classical music is also commonly known to have a similar effect.
Your partner and you should constantly sing to them or read to them, a newborn relaxes when they hear the voice of their parents.
When your baby is old enough, get them toys that are musical.
Observe your baby and emphasize on any sound that they are attracted to. If they hear an aeroplane in the sky, look at them and acknowledge that you heard it too.
How can you Tell Whether the Sound is Too Loud for your Infant?
This can be tricky to begin with, it takes a baby approximately 3 months to be able to react to sounds, during the first 3 months, it is recommended that you keep loud sounds at bay as much as possible. After the 3rd month, your baby will react to sounds that are too loud by crying, as they grow their response to sounds that are too loud can be more and more unique. Some children after the age of six months can cry, some may get startled and become very quiet. If they can move, some children may try moving away from the loud noises.
Factors Affecting Infant's Hearing
There are many factors that can affect your baby’s hearing, here are some:
Constant Exposure to Loud Noises
Lack of Oxygen During Birth
Premature Delivery
Genetic Disorders
Exposure to Infections Like Rubella During Pregnancy
Blunt Force Trauma to the Head
Ear Infections
Damage to the Eardrums Caused By Q-Tips or Earbuds
Exposure to Fireworks
High Fevers
In the situation your child is exposed to these factors, it may impair their hearing either temporarily or permanently.
Hearing Screening Test for Infants
It is now the norm for most hospitals to run routine screenings for hearing soon after the birth of your baby, once you have recovered to some extent from the delivery, you can consult your doctor to know the result of your baby’s auditory screening. If they haven’t yet done it, ensure they do before you leave the hospital. After getting home, using the guidelines provided above, you can run a baby hearing test at home by monitoring their reactions to sounds at regular intervals and comparing them to the hearing development milestone mentioned earlier.
When to Worry about your Newborn's Hearing?
A general rule of thumb for your baby’s hearing is to understand that they have already begun hearing after birth. If your baby fails their screening at the hospital or is struggling to reach their hearing development milestones, you may need to seek medical advice.
Babies have a fully developed auditory system within 1-2 months after birth. With the tips mentioned above, you can sharpen their hearing and derive the most from it.

Neonatal Infections
Most newborns come into the world as healthy babies, but sometimes for the remaining few, that isn't the case. Your baby's immune system is developing and compromised in the early stages of birth, right from pregnancy, which is why he may be susceptible to some of the most common neonatal infections. Here's what you need to know.
Most Common Neonatal Infections
A neonatal infectious disease may occur during pregnancy inside the womb or after delivery as well. Here are some neonatal infections you need to be aware of, including their causes, symptoms, and risk factors.
1. Group B Streptococcal Disease
Group B Streptococcal Disease is an infection that babies contract from inside mothers' wombs.
What is It?
An infection caused by a certain bacteria that's present in the vagina or rectum, it is passed on to the newborn right before birth.
Symptoms
The symptoms of this infection are-
Listlessness
Cranky attitude
Feeding problems
High body temperature
Difficulty breathing
Risks
Risks associated with this disease include-
Pneumonia
Meningitis
Bacteraemia (blood infections)
Diagnosis and Treatment
Your baby's doctor may collect blood, urine or cerebrospinal fluid samples to analyze the culture. Treatment is done through antibiotics under careful supervision and monitoring inside the hospital.
2. Listeriosis
Babies contract listeriosis only if mothers are infected with its bacteria during pregnancy.
What is It?
Listeriosis monocytogenes is an infection that leads to other diseases like pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis. Listeriosis primarily originates from unpasteurized food and improperly cooked meals.
Symptoms
They are similar to Group B Streptococcal Disease (GBS) and include:
Fever
Muscle Aches
Diarrhoea
Risks
Risk factors for listeriosis are-
Premature Delivery
Stillbirth
Pneumonia
Sepsis
Meningitis
Diagnosis and Treatment
Blood samples are collected for diagnosis. Treatment usually follows the use of antibiotics for eliminating the bacteria in babies.
3. Meningitis
Meningitis is a disease that occurs during the neonatal phase or after birth in babies. It is passed down from bacteria, fungi, and other viruses.
What is It?
Meningitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the membranes that surround the spine and the baby's brain. A baby with a weak immune system can contract this disease from his surroundings through exposure to germs.
Symptoms
Meningitis can be identified through symptoms such as-
Crying
Lethargy
Excessive sleeping
Problems while feeding
Irregular body temperature
Difficulty breathing
Rashes
Jaundice
Diarrhoea
Risks
Risk factors associated with meningitis are-
Death
Learning impairment
Kidney damage
Memory problems
Loss of hearing
Diagnosis and Treatment
Your doctor may take blood samples, or run an MRI or CT scan for diagnosing meningitis. The treatment will depend on the type and degree of meningitis your baby has. Most cases of meningitis are resolved with a combination of antibiotics, antiviral medications.
4. E-Coli Infection
E-Coli infection is known as the Escheria-Coli infection. It originates from E-Coli bacteria that is found in every human being.
What is It?
It's an infection that causes urinary tract infections in babies and newborns encounter it when birthed through the birthing canal. E-Coli infections may be contracted from environments such as homes and hospitals.
Symptoms
Symptoms of E-Coli infections include-
Fever
Lack of appetite
Listlessness
Unexpected fussiness
Risks
Risks associated with this infection include-
Damages intestinal linings
Life-threatening kidney failure
Diagnosis and Treatment
Samples of your little one's stool will be collected for diagnosing and confirming the presence of an E-coli infection. Currently, there is no treatment available for this infection, and supportive care includes getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated.
5. Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is referred to as 'pink eye' and is an infectious disease that spreads to other babies as well.
What is It?
When your little one's eyes get inflamed due to a viral or bacterial infection, it is called conjunctivitis.
Symptoms
The following are the symptoms of conjunctivitis in babies-
Swollen eyes
Redness in the eyes
Discharge
Risks
The only risk associated with conjunctivitis is vision impairment if left untreated.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Usually, conjunctivitis is diagnosed through lab tests by collecting discharge samples from the eyes. Treatment, in most cases, is done at home by using a combination of antibiotics and eye drops. In severe cases, babies are hospitalized.
6. Candidiasis
Newborns acquire candidiasis through vaginal delivery or when they're breastfed. It is caused due to the overgrowth of the yeast candida that's found in the body.
What is It?
Candidiasis is an infection that reveals itself in the form of diaper rashes or oral thrush in babies.
Symptoms
Symptoms of candidiasis are-
Vagina rash
Pain in the vagina
Irritation and itching of the vulva
Thick, white, odourless discharge from the vagina or watery discharges
Risks
Risks associated with this infection are-
Weakened immune system
Nappy rash
Diagnosis and Treatment
Your doctor will take a sample from your baby's mouth using a swab to diagnose this infection and send it for lab tests. Treatment is basically using antifungal medications like miconazole and nystatin in babies after feeding or drinking.
7. Sepsis
Sepsis is an infection that turns into a life-threatening complication when allowed to spread throughout the body. Children with a weak/compromised immune system are prone to it.
What is It?
When chemicals that have been released in the body fail to fight infections and instead trigger inflammatory responses on the inside, different organs begin to fail, and sepsis occurs. Sepsis, in severe cases, even leads to death.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Sepsis are-
Decrease in urination
Mood swings or sudden psychological changes
Breathing problems
Irregular heartbeat
Pain in the abdomen
Risks
Risks associated with sepsis are-
Multiple organ failures
Blood clots
Sepsis shock
Low blood pressure
Death
Diagnosis and Treatment
The doctor may collect blood or urine samples for running lab tests to confirm a sepsis diagnosis. Alternatively, an X-ray, urine, and blood tests may be done for signs of blood clots or organ failure. Treatment involves early aggressive treatment in the hospital for the early stages of sepsis, starting them off on antibiotics even before the diagnosis is confirmed, then moving on to blood pressure medicines and IV fluids if the situation calls for it.
8. Influenza
Influenza is contagious and can be spread from person to person. If your baby comes in contact with someone with influenza or touches objects which are infected with its virus, they get influenza.
What is Influenza?
Influenza is referred to as the 'flu' in babies and is more than just mild fever. In severe cases, it turns into a deadly complication why is why protecting babies from it is crucial.
Symptoms
Symptoms of influenza are-
A runny nose
Muscle aches
Shakes and chills in the body
Fever
Fatigue
Risks
Risks associated with influenza for babies are-
Not staying hydrated
Lack of appetite
Fussiness
Difficulty breathing

9. Neonatal Herpes
Neonatal herpes is a serious infection in babies and is contracted from the mother during vaginal birth. If you've already had the infection 6 weeks into your pregnancy, your baby will definitely get it.
What is It?
Neonatal herpes is an infection that causes illness in babies with a compromised immune system. It primarily causes fatigue and a lack of interest to eat in newborns.
Symptoms
The symptoms of this infection are-
Not eating
Rapid breathing
Difficulty breathing
Bluish tongue and skin
Rashes
Lethargy
Listlessness
Risks
Risks associated with this infection are-
