Is It Normal Not to See a Yolk Sac in Early Pregnancy?
All stages of pregnancy have their own signs of indicating a healthy pregnancy. These signs assure a pregnant woman that the foetus is developing well and the pregnancy is progressing as anticipated. One of the first such indicators that a mother-to-be looks forward to is a yolk sac during her first ultrasound scan.
What Is a Yolk Sac?
The yolk sac is a foremost structure that is visible inside the gestational sac which envelopes the emerging foetus and the amniotic fluid. The gestational sac resembles a white circumference around an indistinct centre. It is visible when a transvaginal ultrasound scan is performed during the initial weeks of gestation. The yolk sac performs the role of providing the preliminary nourishment to the growing foetus. It is also responsible for early circulation and delivers essential nutrients to the embryo through a method known as vitelline circulation. The foetal circulatory system develops at around 12 weeks of gestation, and the yolk sac ceases its circulatory function around this time. The yolk sac is not discernible until about five to six weeks of gestation.
If No Yolk Sac Is Visible at 6 Weeks of Pregnancy, What Does it Mean?
Sometimes the yolk sac is not visible during the first ultrasound scan. If no yolk sac is seen in the ultrasound, it could merely mean that the gestational age has been misread. This may be the result of an error in recalling the date of the last menstrual period or if a woman has irregular periods.
If your doctor suspects that there is no visible yolk sac when you are presumed to be at six weeks of your pregnancy, she may attribute it to inaccurate gestational age, and you will be suggested to come back for a scan in two weeks. If the pregnancy is progressing well, a yolk sac and possibly a foetal pole should be visible by then.
Is No Yolk Sac at 6 Weeks a Sign of Miscarriage?
If a woman is 6 weeks pregnant and no yolk sac or foetal pole is visible during the ultrasound scan, it could be a sign of miscarriage. But it is hard to tell, hence a follow-up scan will be required to ascertain that there is no sign of foetal development. If this is established, then the doctor will diagnose a miscarriage.
Sometimes, if the gestational sac has reached a certain measurement like 25mm or more, and yet there is no yolk sac or foetal pole visible, then your doctor will identify it as a miscarriage.
What Do Medical Experts Recommend in Such a Situation?
An empty gestational sac, or no yolk sac at 8 weeks where the embryo is also absent, is termed as anembryonic or empty sac pregnancy. This is the kind of miscarriage where the woman is advised by a medical professional to either go in for a D&C (dilation and curettage) or for a natural termination of pregnancy.
A D&C (dilation and curettage) is a common surgical process done on women. It is used to terminate a miscarriage when the uterus fails to empty the contents of an unsuccessful pregnancy entirely. Dilation & curettage involves dilation of the cervix to make an aperture for a small surgical instrument to scrape tissue from the uterus.
Studies indicate that anembryonic pregnancies are inclined to have greater levels of chromosomal abnormalities. Research suggests that a woman's body identifies this problem early on and halts further progress of the pregnancy. On finding out about an empty sac, no doubt you will feel bad, but if you look at the bright side, it is a discontinuance of an unhealthy pregnancy.
The key to a healthy pregnancy is to remain stress-free. It is very common to not have a visible yolk sac due to miscalculations in gestational age, but you should not lose hope or feel discouraged until you have a confirmation from your doctor regarding a miscarriage.

DIY Guide: How to Make Natural Holi Colours at Home
Once upon a time, the colours used in Holi were prepared with the flowers of spring blooming in the surroundings, but nowadays, chemical-based colours have completely replaced those nature-friendly colours. This year, let us all pledge to celebrate Holi in a different way and help our kids become the environmentally responsible citizens of tomorrow. Keep reading to learn how to prepare natural colours for Holi at home.
The readily available colours and dyes in markets are adulterated with high content of chromium, silica, lead and alkaline materials. These unhygienic synthetic colours sold in open are even proved to contain a significant amount of glass particles in them. These toxic substances pose a high risk of health complications like skin and eye diseases, when used on bodies.
This Holi, celebrate Holi with your kids in an eco-friendly manner - with colours of safety and satisfaction, and smiles of pride on everyone’s faces.
Eco-friendly Holi with Natural Colours
To go with natural, safe colours this Holi, use these 100% organic techniques to prepare harmless colours at home:
For Beautiful Saffrons
Soak the ‘Flame of the forest’ or ‘Palash’ or ‘Tesu’ flowers overnight or boil them to get that traditional colour of Holi. Saffron strands, though costly, are highly beautifying for the skin and can be used to get this shade too.
For Lovely Pinks
Slice or grate beetroot and soak it in water to get those different tints of pink. Soak overnight to get a deep magenta.
For Delightful Browns
Brown is a very uncommon colour, when it comes to Holi celebrations. Boil tea or coffee leaves in water. Cool and use this brown colour to surprise your visitors.
For Garden Greens
Use equal quantities of Henna powder (unmixed with ‘amla’ powder) with flour to get that perfect shade of green. Smear this mix on everyone’s hairs and help them condition their hairs as well.
For Dazzling Yellows
Mix turmeric powder with double the quantity of gram flour or ‘besan’. This mixture has magical effects on the skin. ‘Besan’ can be replaced with wheat flour, rice flour or refined flour to obtain the same yellow colour.
For Glamorous Reds
Red Sandalwood, known to be very beneficial for the skin, can be used to prepare a bright red colour. Shade dried Hibiscus flowers can also be used for the same.
For Magnificent Blacks
Synthetic black colours are very harmful as they are prepared from used batteries. Prepare a safe version by boiling dried Indian gooseberries or ‘amla’ in an iron vessel and leaving it overnight. Dilute it with water the next day.
Ask your kid to help you make these colours at home. Explain to him the harmful effects of toxic colours and let him explore the fascinating world of natural colours by experimenting with flowers, leaves and fruits. You will be amazed to see how your little effort will motivate your little one to play an eco-friendly Holi.

5 Best Anti-ageing Exercises for your Face
Want to know what women dread the most, apart from getting fat? It's spotting signs of ageing, which include wrinkles and blemishes. It's time you follow our simple and effective anti-aging tips for your face and keep those awful wrinkles and marks at bay. Stay young and beautiful lady, you've got a wonderful life ahead!
Instead of only dedicating countless hours at the gym to get in shape, spend some time in taking care of your skin. Get rid of or stop the progression of those nasty wrinkles with our tips for your face. Follow these exercises and lift and tone your skin in no time.
Reasons for Skin Ageing
Age-related skin alterations are primarily a result of genetically tuned changes (intrinsic factors) along with environmental wear-and-tear (extrinsic factors). However, the extrinsic factors seem to be the predominant reason in most cases.
It is estimated that 80-90% of the changes one observes on their skin is a result of exposure to daylight which is also known as photoageing. This subsequently leads to wrinkle formation, loss of skin elasticity, hyperpigmentation and skin discolouration amongst other changes.
Other extrinsic factors that affect skin ageing are:
Sun exposure
Lifestyle choices (e.g. Smoking)
Protein & carbs lacking diet
Vitamin C deficiency
Lack of sleep
Stress
Did You Know: Japanese Women Tend to Have Better Skin Because of One Factor in Their Diet!
It is observed that Japanese women tend to have more supple skin than women living in other parts of the world. In fact, while comparing the skin quality between women belonging to nearby regions like Shanghai and Bangkok, Japenese women tend to show fewer instances of skin ageing despite sharing a similar lifestyle, except one- They consume a higher amount of natto!
Natto is fermented soyabean and is a staple food of Japanese cuisine. It is also known to be richest food source of vitamin K2. Scientists have observed that a deficiency in this micronutrient can aggravate the skin ageing process. In fact, some recent discoveries show how vitamin K2 can play a key role in wrinkle treatment and prevention, varicose veins, breast and liver cancer as well as diabetes.
Anti-ageing Facial Exercises You Need to Start Doing Right Now
Your face also needs exercise from time to time to maintain its health and glow. These anti-ageing exercises are super simple and can be done at home easily.
1. The Jawline Workout
Benefits: The Platysma muscle helps connect the jawline to your shoulders. When this muscle becomes loose, your skin sags and leads to a double chin. However, there is an exercise to prevent this turkey neck situation.
How to Do This: Tilt your head back and make your tongue touch the roof of your mouth. You might feel a bit of stretch in your neck, but don't stop. Bring your neck back to its normal position once done. Do this 10 times for each set.
2. Opt for Yoga
Benefits: Heard of 'Face Yoga'? Well, let's just say it'll help tone your face and neck muscles. Additionally, these face exercises help in blood circulation and release muscle tension.
How to Do This:You will need to hold in your breath and then release it in ways that help discipline your facial muscles. Take a deep breath through your mouth and then puff your cheeks out. Hold your breath for as long as possible before releasing the air from your nose. Repeat the exercise at least 6-8 times in a day. This is a great face exercise for tightening your skin.
3. The Forehead Exercise
Benefits: Scared you'll have permanent furrows around your brows and lines on your forehead? To get rid of those forehead wrinkles, take a cue from your kids - you need to make a few funny and surprised facial expressions.
How to Do This: When you act surprised, it actually smoothens the creases that line your forehead. Try to keep your eyes wide open without contracting your forehead muscles. Repeat this for close to eight times in a day and witness fast results.
4. Eyebrow Flex
Benefits: Who needs Botox fillers when you have the eyebrow flex? This exercise helps keep the skin around your eyebrows tight and prevents drooping.
How to Do This: Press both your middle fingers together at the inner corner of the eyebrows. Apply pressure with your index fingers on the outer corners of your eyebrows. Now lift your head to the ceiling, then take the lower eyelid upwards and squint. Relax. Repeat the motion another six times.
5. Cheek Workout
Benefits: This exercise works on those cheekbones and muscles to maintain the height and fullness.
How to Do This:To make sure your cheeks look full and high, lift the laugh lines between your lips and nose. Smile and then press your fingertips on the area. Now lift up the area, such that your cheekbones are raised. Hold the position for 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise at least 20-30 times for effective results.

Anti-ageing Treatments That are Rather Harmful
While anti-ageing cosmetic treatments seem like a plausible and permanent solution, there are several reasons why you must not give in to the hype. These popular anti-ageing treatments could potentially do more harm than good.
1. Botox
The popular wrinkle fixer may not be worth your money. Botox is a non-surgical procedure that offers the same benefits of a cosmetic surgery. However, it doesn’t work the same way for everyone. Its usefulness depends on factors like skin type, thickness and how advanced is the wrinkle appearance. Therefore, not everyone can benefit from the effects of this injection!
2. Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHA)
A popular skin anti-ageing ingredient, AHAs are known to improve skin texture and diminish signs of skin ageing. However, AHAs can also cause horrid skin irritation. They are extensively used in skin peels, and its usage can potentially increase the risk of flaking and redness. Also, AHAs should ideally be absorbed into the skin to increase their efficiency. This means face washes that claim AHA as an ingredient will not work because it gets washed away.
3. Micro-Needling
Micro-needling involves running a roller covered with small needles, all over your face. This treatment claims to be a switch on repair mechanism in your skin, regenerates collagen and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, the risks involved in this procedure may outweigh its benefits. One will always need to pay close attention to the sterility of the roller and needles being used. If the device isn’t cleaned thoroughly after every use, it could lead to skin infections and scarring.
4. Oxygen Mask Facial Treatment
Sure an Oxygen mask facial will leave your face plumper, however, there is very little scientific evidence that supports its long-term viability. An aestheticism applies pressurised oxygen, acid, and a customised serum to help you get that smooth, silky and plump skin. However, the plumping effect can be extremely temporary and a possible result of inflammation.
Engaging in a routine that involves facial exercises will help tighten loose skin and give you a youthful look without having to go under the knife. The exercises discussed above are easy, will not take much time and can be done at any time of the day. Follow these face exercises and say hello to healthier, younger and naturally beautiful looking skin. Read more

Why I Hate Cinderella
And why should children be kept away from such fairy tales
When I was a kid, I had to participate in a fancy dress competition. Like my other girlfriends, I, too wanted a fairy tale princess attire for myself. But as luck would have it, by the time we reached the shop, all the costumes were sold out. The shop-owner held a mucky wig in his hand, saying that is what is left. And my father, who is never to call it quits, took it and I participated in the event as a sweeper!I hated all the princesses from that day on.And all the protagonists of the many fairy tales that I have read in my childhood. One thing which strikingly is common and comes right at your face when you read them is the beauty. All these ladies are beautiful to their bones. The story keeps accentuating the fact around every corner. Not a speck of ugliness has ever touched them. And there it is — the first seed of inferiority is sown.Looks.Somewhere, the small brain of a child, who reads the story, interprets that external beauty is immensely important. If I am not beautiful, I am not good enough. I am something less. This beauty does not stop at the epidermal level. No way, Sir. It goes much deeper. The lady also has a very kind soul; so kind and pure, even the birds and animals around can sense that and help herein her chores! Not an iota of anything bad has brushed past her. Not the slightest shade of grey. That is what it is meant to convey—the picture of a perfect lady. Love and kindness, almost dripping out of her.Cinderella could never have even dreamt of disobeying her stepmother. A naughty blotch of stain on her mother’s dress or a deliberate speck of leftover on the dishes. An innocent cut in the sisters’ dress while sewing nor a simple feigning of sickness.Something. Anything.Never, not once, is there a citation of her saying NO. That I will not.Message- never stand up for yourself. She had to be so perfect, so obliging and so dutiful. And there lies the ulterior motive. Raise ‘good’ girls. Why were these stories told? When a little girl hears this story, she relates to Cinderella. And hates the stepmother and stepsister. Mentally she has made a table of Dos and Donts. The actions of Cinderella check in to the Dos side and the cruel actions are featured on the other.Next time she does something, she relates to whether it is like Cinderella or like the sisters and she has a moral compass ready with her guiding her to make the ‘right’ decisions. Leaving her without any inkling of grey areas.Mission accomplished.Moving ahead in the story, there is always a stepmother/stepsister/witch ( again a feminine character!) so cruel to our Lady, that it brings you to the brink of killing her yourself. And since we are on the topic, just posing a passing thought. Why is the bridge always falling, kids tumbling down the hills & breaking their heads, and eggs falling from walls in our rhymes? But, will bottle this for some other day.Coming back to our lady. She always needs some rescuing from that evilness and is always so helpless, in need of support. Typical damsel in distress. And rubbing salt to the injury, cometh the charming Prince. It was never a woodcutter, or a farmer, or even a rich boy. Always had to be a Prince.Cinderella possibly couldn’t just dance her heart’s fill that night and let the prince see her in her real form. Maybe the prince still would have married her.Rapunzel never tried once to get out herself. Chopped off her hair and used it as a rope and escape. No, not happening. It has to be the Prince. What about teaching our children to try themselves? And all the stories end in marriage. Happily ever after. Leaves you with the impression that marrying is the ultimate aim. And marrying a prince — my my, nothing like it. No one wants to know the other side of the story.Stories are a wonderful medium to teach our children the things we want them to think about and eventually practice. The onus of teaching them to tell good from bad lies on us. Keeping this in mind, we have to choose our stories with care.Children need to learn that there will be bad days and the best person to rely on is yourself.Yes, you can take help. The help can be a girl or a boy (or an animal)and, most importantly, you don’t necessarily need to marry the help!!I am grateful for newer versions of stories like Merida, Maleficient, Moana, and Frozen. Girls have better role models to look up to. Characters who are not picture-perfect beautiful, have freckles and untameable hair, and yet are beautiful in their own way. When thrown a challenge, they don’t wait for a charming Prince, they pick up their skirts and fight. They fall and scrape their knees but they keep fighting. That is what I want my daughter to read and learn. So, I never told her those fairy tale stories and was happy when later one day she came up to me and asked- “Mama, why did Cinderella not say anything to her stepmother?”I knew I had chosen the right stories for her.FYI- I won the fancy dress competition that day.
