Taking a Betnesol Injection During Pregnancy - Is It Safe?
Preterm labour can lead to the problems of the heart, lungs, and brain in a newborn. But nowadays, there are certain drugs available that can help delay labour. Many doctors consider administering Betnesol injections to a new mother. However, a Betnesol injection is administered only if its benefits outweigh the risk. If you are pregnant, you should know whether these injections are safe or not.
What is Betnesol?
Betnesol (betamethasone sodium phosphate) is a corticosteroid used for treating hormonal imbalance, inflammatory conditions, and autoimmune diseases. Insufficiency of corticosteroids, in general, has a significant impact on our body. They have many vital functions in the body like, regulating salt, balancing the water, regulating stress levels, and ensuring the proper functioning of the heart. This injection is administered in emergency situations to gain quick control of the symptoms.
Is It Safe to Take Betamethasone Injections During Pregnancy?
A Betnesol injection is given during pregnancy only if there is no alternative treatment available for a prenatal complication. Administering a Betnesol injection to a pregnant woman can pose risks to her baby as it is known to cross the placenta and affect the unborn child. It is best avoided in any form (injections or topical creams) unless recommended by a doctor. It is best to consult a gynaecologist about the risks involved and ask about alternatives.
Caution: It should not be taken without consulting a doctor.
When Is Betnesol Used?
Betnesol or betamethasone injection is prescribed if the following complications arise during pregnancy.
1. Preterm Labour
Preterm labour is a common complication during pregnancy. If the baby is born before 32-35 weeks of pregnancy, his lungs will not be completely developed, and hence won’t function properly. When the doctor suspects that a pregnant woman will go into premature labour, she will administer these injections to ensure that the baby’s lungs inflate easily without sticking together. It is usually given 24 hours before the expected preterm labour.
2. Fetal Fibronectin Test (FFT)
Fetal fibronectin is a protein that helps amniotic sac stick to the lining of the uterus. The amniotic sac cushions the baby in the uterus. But when it disrupts, the fetal fibronectin may be released into secretions near the cervix. This can obstruct the growth of the baby and lead to a miscarriage or preterm labour. During pregnancy, your doctor may suggest a fetal fibronectin test between 22 and 34 weeks, and take a swab of your secretions to check for the presence of fibronectin. If the test is positive, you might go into premature labour. The test is done before administering Betnesol. Betnesol will most likely be given to you if you are expecting twins or multiple babies.
Dosage
The dosage is determined after checking the medical history of a pregnant woman. Your doctor can take a call after understanding your case history. If your doctor foresees the probability of some complications, he may advise injections. Therefore, it is best to discuss the pros and cons of this treatment with your doctor.
How Is Betnesol Given?
Betnesol can be administered in the following ways:
It is injected directly into the veins or muscles to produce an effect throughout the body. This is done through drips. The dosage and duration will depend on the case and complications.
It can be applied topically on the affected area to reduce inflammation. In some cases, it is directly injected into the inflamed tissue.
The medication is never given on a long-term basis. It may be prescribed for a few days or maybe for 2-3 weeks. But it should not be stopped abruptly. It should be tapered slowly to reduce the intensity of any withdrawal symptoms.
Complications
Mentioned below are some side effects that you may notice during pregnancy if you are administered Betnesol injections.
Betnesol is a corticosteroid, which is known to reduce the body’s natural immunity and inflammatory responses. Hence, if you are taking Betnesol, you might be more susceptible to infections.
Giving high doses of Betnesol can lead to mood swings and behavioural changes. If you have been administered Betnesol injection, you might become more irritable, depressed, confused. You may even have trouble falling asleep.
It might affect your baby’s growth and development. It can lead to a delay in your baby's growth and affect his heart rate and movements.
If Betnesol is given in high doses, it may pass on to the baby while you breastfeed him and affect his adrenal gland-producing steroid hormones.
In addition to injections, it can enter your body through other mediums too. If you use certain skin creams containing Betnesol (even in small quantity), it may be absorbed by your skin and may affect the baby. Therefore, it is suggested that you consult a doctor before using any steroid creams.
After reading this, we hope you have a fair idea about Betnesol injections and will avoid taking them at all cost during pregnancy and even after delivery. Talk to your gynaecologist to understand the severity of the condition and the risks involved. Ask about the alternative treatments which are safe.

Banana Puree for Baby - Easiest Way to Make
Mothers are often eager to introduce their babies to solid food once the breastfeeding phase starts to fade. Amongst the wide variety of food choices, most of them can be fed only after your baby has grown a bit. However, banana puree for a 4-month baby has been known to be quite beneficial.
How to Select and Buy Bananas?
While choosing bananas, it is important to go for fresh and ripe ones. Opt for bananas whose outer peels are smooth and yellow without any spots. Green bananas are yet to be ripened properly, whereas bananas whose peels start showing black spots are way past their ripe date.
Ingredients Needed to make Banana Puree
A ripe banana
Water
Breast milk or formula based milk
How to Make Banana Puree for Babies?
1. Purchase Bananas That are Fresh
A smooth and squishy texture for the puree is necessary for babies to consume it easily. Bananas that are ripe and healthy are essential for it. These mash well and their natural flavour turn out to be good, too.
2. Prepare the Banana by Washing, Peeling and Slicing it
Mix water with some vinegar and wash the banana with it. This removes all bacteria. Wash in cold water, dry the banana, then peel it. Slice the banana into small pieces, while discarding the end portions.
3. Mash the Banana to Create the Puree
It is best to puree the banana using a blender since the consistency will be uniform. A slight purplish-brown colour will start appearing in the puree. You may add water to thin the puree further. Another option is to use formula-based milk or breast milk to mix with the banana puree instead of water.
4. Add Texture or Flavour to it
Though the puree tastes pretty good on its own, mixing it with another food item can enhance the flavour. Fruits like peach, plum, cherries, or even yoghurt are great options to mix the puree with.
5. Refrigerate any Puree that Remains
Any puree that remains can be kept in a clean hygienic food-friendly container inside the fridge for up to a period of 3 days. This puree still remains good to feed the baby.
Things to Keep in Mind
Use your judgement for the puree texture. The smoother it is, the easier it is for the baby to consume it.
Don’t offer an entire bowl of puree to your baby. He will eat small amounts first then increase gradually.
Bananas don’t cause constipation. Hence, it is safe to give puree to your baby up to three times in a week.
Although puree can be refrigerated, it is best to serve fresh made puree.
Ripe bananas are the best for creating purees. Not only do they taste better, but they are free from most allergens, too.
Introducing newer food items is always an interesting time. When it comes to multiple items of baby food, banana puree is quite a safe and healthy option. In any case, prior to introducing your baby to any food item beyond your breastmilk, it is recommended to get a go-ahead from your doctor since he might know of any potential allergy conditions your baby might have.

Best Tips to Grow Bonsai Tree at Home
Bonsai is an art that combines artistic skills with a keen eye for details and balance with a lot of patience. Growing a bonsai tree at home will take years of dedicated care and understanding of the principles involved. If you plan to take up this art, here’s all you need to know about it.
Why Should You Grow Bonsai?
Bonsai brings together the best qualities of both a pet and a houseplant, it is a living entity that needs just enough of your care and attention without being demanding in your life. Here are five reasons for you to create bonsai plants:
1. It Takes Up Very Little Space
There are breeds of bonsai trees that can be cultivated to fit any space. Whether you want them on your desk, living room on outdoors, there are different species that can be grown for the purpose. You can also carry them wherever you go.
2. They are Easy to Care for
Many of the easy-to-grow bonsai trees are surprisingly low-maintenance. They adapt well to your home and thrive well with some sunshine and water every day, an occasional fertilizer and replanting once every few years. With that, they will live healthily and bloom over and over again, adding beauty to your living space.
3. Your Bonsai is your Personal Artistic Statement
Every bonsai is unique and grown as a result of your styling and its own quirks. You can work with them as they grow understanding their nature to bring out the best effect. With careful training and pruning, you can work to bring out its unique qualities, making it a work of art.
4. They Energize your Home
Bonsai trees have long been a part of the ancient art of Feng Shui as they are thought to draw life energy into the house and share it with everyone who passes by. They are often the centre of attention in a living space and spread joy and contentment to everybody who comes to see it.
5. Your Bonsai can Become your Companion for Life
Bonsai trees can live for decades when they are properly cared for and become your companion for life. Some of the bonsai species can live for hundreds of years and thus, outlive you as well. The oldest bonsai trees in the world are over 800 years old and were passed down from generations.
What are the Different Ways of Planting Bonsai?
There are five ways on how to grow bonsai plants:
1. Growing from Seeds
If you wish to start from scratch, growing them from seeds is the way to go. It’s also a great way to grow larger number of trees at a low cost with the added advantage of getting your hands on some really good quality trees. You can either collect the seeds of trees such as conifers, birch and beech of the trees or have them shipped to you by a supplier. The seedlings you grow can have some useful variations perfect for bonsai, and the rest can be discarded.
2. Growing from Seedlings
City dwellers who wish to do most of the growing on their own but lack the space to sow a large number of seeds can start growing their bonsai from saplings. As the seeds of some of the hard coated types such as beech, quince, ginkgo, yew and lime take time to germinate, about two years or more can be saved by starting from seedlings bought from nurseries.
3. Growing from Cuttings
Cutting is a quick way to obtain a young plant if you wish to save more time. For many of the bonsai species, it’s also the ideal way to grow. The advantage of growing a bonsai tree from a cutting is that you know exactly how it will turn out to be as they inherit the same characteristics as their parent tree.
4. Growing by Layering
Flowering shrubs and trees whose shoots can be easily bent to the soil can be propagated by this method. A healthy shoot of a one-year-old plant is given a slit at the tip and bent to touch the soil. It is then pegged, and the sit shoot is covered with a good amount of soil and watered regularly. When they are layered around spring, the new plant will be ready by autumn for harvest and re-potting.
5. Growing from Wild Plants
Growing from wild plants is the way a bonsai enthusiast looks to bring out the naturalness of the trees and preserve the most fundamental philosophy behind the art. By looking among the seedlings of wilt trees and shrubs you may find specimens with interesting qualities that can be used in the art.
How to Grow and Maintain Bonsai Plant?
Whether choose to grow a shrub, a conifer or bonsai fruit trees, these steps are common to all:
1. Preparation of Growing Medium
Bonsai pots are available in different sizes and shapes such as circular, triangular, square or rectangles. You will need the right kind of pot with adequate room for soil and a good drainage to remove excess water. Red soil commonly used in gardening has good aeration and nutrient retention properties which works well with manure when used in a 50-50 ratio. Aggregates also need to be used to ensure proper drainage of excess water.
2. Planting the Bonsai
A nursery is your best bet to find trees or shrubs suited for bonsai. Flowering shrubs such as Jasmine, Azalea or Bougainvillea do well in all weather conditions. If you wish to grow a fruit the exotic way, lime, fig, peach, guava and cherry work well. You could also pick up saplings of Peepal or Banyan trees from parks, botanical gardens or rural areas. Extra caution should be taken while re-potting the bonsai and you need to ensure the soil has adequate moisture in it at all times.
3. Watering the Bonsai
The watering needs of different trees vary according to the type and season. Ensure you water them every day just enough to keep the soil moist but not so much that they cause the roots to rot. The soil needs to hold enough moisture such that you can easily thrust a dowel into it and it doesn’t come out with wet mud stuck to it. Use fresh, clean water only and avoid using recycled water.
4. Pruning the Bonsai
Pruning the branches and roots of the tree is part of the training techniques that are important in shaping it. Trimming encourages new growth so you can define the shape the way you need it. Trimming the roots helps keep it within the pot and eliminate diseased sections at the same time. It improves nutrition and water absorption characteristics of the root and helps in growth. Pruning requires skills, and you need the right tools such as scissors or pruning shears.
5. Using Fertilizers to Aid Growth
Although you’ve added enough manure, bonsai trees need fertilisers to supplement for the elements they lack or draw more when they are flowering or bearing fruit. Different fertilisers are available for specific functions such as flowering, bearing fruit or growing mini bonsai tree faster. Choose the right type of fertiliser needed and use them during the growing season of your tree.
6. Repotting the Bonsai
Re-potting is necessary to replenish the lost nutrients in the soil and also to accommodate the growth of your bonsai tree. Faster growing trees may need to be re-potted once a year while the slower growing ones do well when re-potted once every two or three years. Since it is a delicate operation, it’s best done under an expert’s guidance the first time.
7. Wiring the Bonsai
Wiring is another important aspect of training the bonsai trees to develop into the shapes you envision for them. Aluminium or copper wires found with suppliers will suffice for the process, most bonsai enthusiasts use aluminium as it is softer and easy to work with. Wire training must be done on a tree that’s well adjusted to its life and is flexible. The right time to wire is after re-potting for all trees, however, seasons vary depending on the species of the tree. Deciduous trees are best wired in spring while coniferous trees are best wired later winter or early autumn.
8. Controlling Pests and Diseases
Diseases and pests can turn out to be some of the worse enemies of your bonsai tree. You need to be on the lookout for common fungal and bacterial diseases that tend to destroy trees. Re-potting and organic pesticides are good ways to keep your little tree from getting sick. You also need to ensure that the tree receives a good balance of nutrients and nothing in excess, which can harm it.

Five Tips to Having a Well-mannered Kid in a Restaurant
Anniversary, birthday, a random day out – all can be the reasons to dine out with your family. But as a parent, this is probably one of those nightmarish moments that few of us always try to steer clear of. Dining out with children, however, can be managed to make it an evening to remember – that to for the right reasons.
If there is one thing that most of the parents miss from the pre-baby days, is eating at a restaurant without the mortal fear of the deadly wail striking out at any time. Here are some tricks from the seasoned players who have lived to tell the tale of their victory.
Picking the Restaurant
Work with your little one to know what kind of food does she feel up to. It’s easier to have her co-operation when she knows she has chosen the place, cuisine or something important. Each member can take turns in choosing a place.
Once she has expressed her wish on the cuisine, look at your options and pick a place that is child-friendly, such as having some table-top puzzles, games or place to lounge in. In fact, make sure of the amenities by calling up the restaurant before paying a visit and also make a reservation beforehand. Let them know you have a child with you and hence, you would not like to wait.
Remember, fine dining restaurants are a no-no for kids. The average experience time – from arriving to getting out is at least an hour and a half – and it will be very difficult to keep a preschooler occupied for that long. So, choose wisely!
Playing Captain Explorer
Once you are at a restaurant, block your table and place your order. NEVER make the mistake of being seated at the table while waiting for the food to arrive. This gets the kids impatient and worked up. So, take that time to explore the place, the surroundings – a fish tank, the paintings, etc. Time will pass quicker.
Involve your Child
Ask the little one to go through the menu and choose what she would like to eat. But, make sure she knows that her opinion counts, and she gets what she wants. All this adds to the excitement when the dish finally arrives. As far as possible, keep it multiple dishes with smaller portion sizes or dishes that can be shared with all. That way, you keep the momentum going through the meal. Work in tandem with your table attendant to work this out.
Santa’s Bag
Do not forget to pack this – herein may lie your lifeline for the evening. Her favorite toy, a book to read, some papers to draw on, can all jointly do wonders for your daughter if all your research about picking up the right restaurant goes to naught.
Portion Sizes
Ask the attendant or the chef to keep the portion sizes right. Having large portion sizes will lead to unnecessary table discussions about completing the food on the plate, thus fraying up nerves.
Under no circumstances should you lose your cool or scream at the child in a restaurant. That will make her even more rebellious. Most online groups will have at least a few moms fretting about the fear of being ‘that’ mom whose kid wails out loud in the middle of a quiet restaurant. However, kids are not irrational beings (umm, for the most part that is!). They just want things their way – don’t we all? So, go ahead and make that much-awaited reservation. Happy dining! Read more

A. Hello mam! If it is due to colic pain /gas, it is common in newborns. Make sure that you burp your baby after every feed. Don't feed just before your baby is to sleep. Make a routine like feed, play and sleep. Burp inbetween feedings. Colic pain will stop automatically at 5 or 6 months. So don't worry. Happy parenting!
