Cough in Babies - Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
Newborn babies are prone to viral infections like cough and the common cold because their immune systems are not developed enough to fight viruses. A persistent cough in babies can lead to a painful throat along with aches and shivers. To help get rid of these symptoms, it is important to know the causes and symptoms of cough, and how it can be prevented.

Types of Cough
There are four types of cough that affect babies: wet cough, dry cough, croup cough, and whooping cough. Here is an overview of the cough types and what they mean for your child.
Croup Cough
Croup is a disease associated with a dry, woofing, and harsh cough. In this condition, the child suffers from a swollen upper trachea or windpipe. The swelling below the vocal cords is responsible for the barking sound. You may also notice that the child makes a high-pitched sound during breathing, known as stridor.
Dry Cough
This is a broken cough resulting from infection due to cold or influenza in babies. It affects the upper respiratory tract, including the nose and throat. You may notice that such a cough gets worse in warm temperatures or the moment the child retires to bed.
Wet Cough
A wet cough occurs when phlegm and fluid secretions accumulate in the lower respiratory tract, which comprises the windpipe and lungs.
Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
A child with whooping cough will show symptoms comparable to normal cough, but it worsens with frequent bouts of coughing, especially during nights. The recurrent coughing fits will be followed by a series of 5 to 15 abrupt coughs one after the other. The child may take deep breaths that sound like whooping.
What Causes Cough in Babies?
A baby's cough is a response to the mucus in the system as a way to get rid of it, and also is a reaction to the irritation caused by the swollen airways and throat. There are several reasons for coughing in babies, but the most common reason is cold or flu.
1) Cold
A cold can result in a cough, and the baby will be troubled by a runny or stuffy nose accompanied by watery eyes, sore throat, and fever.
2) Flu
Flu is similar to a common cold. In this condition, the baby will have a runny nose, fever, and can also experience diarrhoea or vomiting. The cough because of flu will be dry and not 'chesty', meaning that your baby will have lesser mucus to cough up.
3) Croup
If the baby is suffering from croup, the swollen airways will cause coughing. With narrow airways, babies will find it difficult to breathe.
4) Whooping cough
The child will cough up a lot of mucus and make a 'whoop' sound while breathing in air. It is generally a bacterial infection.
5) Asthma
Asthma can be one of the reasons for the baby to begin coughing. A baby suffering from asthma will have tightness in his chest, and a wheeze while breathing in and out.
6) Tuberculosis (TB)
Continuous coughs that refuse to go away can be a sign of TB. A cough resulting from TB will stay for close to two weeks. A baby might cough blood out, feel breathless, and show loss of appetite, accompanied by fever.
7) Viral infections
These can lead to conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
8) Choking
If you notice the child coughing all of a sudden and wheezing because of a blockage in the nose or throat, it could be because he has inhaled a foreign object.
Cough Signs and Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of cough should raise an alarm for parents because it could be the cause of a serious illness as well. The symptoms vary according to the cause of the cough. Some of the symptoms are given below:
A cough as a result of cold is loose and may form mucus. It gets worse at night because when the child lies down, mucus drops from the back of his nose and mouth into the windpipe. At times, the cough might stay for up to six weeks even when other symptoms of cold have gone.
A cough resulting from asthma is mostly worse at night. It could be accompanied by wheezing and breathing difficulties.
In case you notice a barking, hoarse cough, it is a possible sign of croup.
If your child has just recovered from a cold but is troubled with bouts of coughing for many weeks after the cold, it could be whooping cough. The condition can get serious and the child may appear somewhat blue because of temporary oxygen deficiency during breathing.
If a child less than a year old keeps coughing and has breathing difficulties, these could be symptoms of bronchiolitis.
Tests for Cough
Most children having a cough don’t require any tests. You can find the cause of cough by keeping a note of the history of coughs in your child. Also, note the other symptoms that accompany the cough. Generally, cough tests for babies which are prescribed by doctors include a chest X-ray for checking pneumonia.
Treatment for Baby Coughing
If your child is experiencing coughing fits too often, you can consider the following treatments:
1. Feeding soups or hot liquids can give relief from discomfort and irritation in the chest and can loosen mucus.
2. It is suggested that the child be allowed to inhale air with moisture. You can ensure this in the following ways:
Keep a cool-mist humidifier where your child rests.
You can even let a warm shower run in a closed bathroom and sit in it with your child once the room is filled with steam for around 10 minutes.
You can try keeping a wet towel in your child's room.
3. A child with a dry cough or croup cough may feel better after inhaling cool air. The cool air will lessen the inflammation in the respiratory tract. You can try this in the following ways:
Keep your windows open to let the child breathe in the cool and humid air.
You can also take your child on a drive with the car windows open.
You can let the child snuffle the vapour from a freezer or open refrigerator.
4. You can give cough medications after consulting a paediatrician.
5. There are vaccinations for whooping cough for children. But remember, even after the vaccination, there is a possibility that the child may develop a mild degree of the disease.
Make sure you consult your child’s paediatrician for all the above options.
Effective Home Remedies for Cough in Infants
You can find some relief for your coughing baby by turning to these effective baby cough remedies available at home:
Breast milk: If possible, breastfeed your baby because breast milk contains antibodies which help the baby’s body build immunity against germs, viruses and bacteria.
Massage with infused coconut oil: Heat half cup of coconut oil with one pearl onion, 2-3 tulsi leaves and one betel stem. Switch off the gas and add a pinch of camphor. Applying this oil on areas such as the chest, neck, and underarms can ease nasal congestion and trigger an open and smooth airflow.
Garlic and carom (ajwain) pouch: Garlic and carom seeds are good for cold treatment because of their anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. For this, dry roast two big cloves of garlic and one tablespoon of ajwain. Once it cools down, place the mixture in a clean muslin cloth to make a tight pouch. Keep the pouch hidden under the baby’s pillow or cot. The aroma from the pouch can help in opening up the blocked nose and provide relief from congestion. You can also heat the pouch a little bit and gently rub it on your baby's chest. Make sure the pouch isn't too hot, though.
Massage with mustard oil infused in garlic and carom seeds: For this, take about one-fourth cup of warm mustard oil infused with crushed garlic. Massage this oil on the soles of the baby’s feet and chest. A pinch of carom seeds can be added to this too. Mustard oil has a warming effect that helps soothe congestion.
Turmeric paste: Mix some turmeric powder in water to form a paste and heat it in a ladle. Apply the paste on the chest, forehead and feet. The heat from the turmeric can absorb the mucus and provide relief.
Eucalyptus oil: This oil has expectorant properties (helps bring up and expel mucus) and can be used for cold relief. Add 1-2 drops of eucalyptus oil in cotton and keep it in the baby’s room.
Tomato and garlic soup: These ingredients, when added to soup, help in strengthening the immune system and preventing the occurrence of cold and cough.
Ajwain water with jaggery: Ajwain contains antimicrobial properties. Boil one cup of water with a pinch of ajwain and one teaspoon of jaggery. Then strain, cool, and give one teaspoon once a day for cough relief.
Carrot juice: Carrots contain beta carotene and choline which are effective against asthma. Give your baby carrot juice diluted in boiled water.
Kesar tilak: This is a traditional remedy in which a few threads of saffron (kesar) are rubbed to form a paste and applied on the sole and forehead of the baby at night. It is believed that it helps in absorbing the water stored in the baby’s forehead.
Hair oil made from drumstick leaves: Heat half a cup of coconut oil and add some drumstick leaves (that are rich in Vitamin C). When the leaves release their oils, cool the mixture. You can use this oil on the baby’s hair during bouts of cough, cold and congestion.
Chicken soup: Chicken soup can relieve cold symptoms, congestion, and cough.
Honey: It is known for its mucolytic effect or its capability to soften dry cough. You can administer a spoon of honey for soothing your baby's cough. Make sure you administer this remedy only if your baby is older than 1 year as honey can trigger botulism (a kind of poisoning) in babies under 1 year of age.
Ginger and tulsi: Crush ginger and tulsi to extract the juice, and add honey before giving it to your baby.
When to Visit a Doctor
Most coughs in babies get better in a few days with the help of care and rest. However, if your baby shows any of the following symptoms, you should visit the doctor:
If the child is suffering from a dry cough which lasts for more than four days
The dry or wet cough is accompanied with a cold and fever, wheezing, and spells of coughing
The child is wheezing rapidly, groaning, turning blue, or rapidly retracting and expanding his stomach
The child is experiencing a loss of appetite and weight
How to Keep Baby Away From Cough
You can protect your child from cough in the following ways:
Make sure your child is covered up if the weather is cold
Seek treatment for asthma if that is the trigger of persistent coughing
Protect against infections with appropriate vaccines
Don’t let the child eat whole nuts or play with small objects that can be easily inhaled. This will prevent choking
Ensure basic hygiene like washing hands to stay away from cold and flu germs
Ensure that your child is in a room with appropriate levels of humidity
These tips can go a long way in preventing the recurrence of cough in your child.

How to Check the Cervix for Dilation
When your due date of delivery approaches, you will feel contractions. These contractions are nothing but the tightening of the uterus and dilation of the cervix. The dilation of cervix makes it possible for the baby to move from the uterus to the vaginal canal. The cervix plays an important role in a woman's body during the process of childbirth. The cervix dilates from 1 centimetre to 10 centimetres before a woman goes into active labour. Therefore, to know if you are ready to give birth or not, you must check your cervix for dilation.
Why Should You Check Your Cervix for Dilation?
It is beneficial to know your body when you are going through the life-altering process that is pregnancy. It will help you determine what stage of labour you are in and whether the baby is ready to come out. Checking your cervix for dilation will let you know if you can begin to push the baby out. However, if you are not confident or unsure of doing so, it is best to avoid it.
Checking your own cervix for dilation can help you in the following ways:
It gives you control over your body during labour, which is an emotionally and physically intense situation for a woman.
Relying on lab tests can be time-consuming and you will have to wait for the results. Checking your own cervix for dilation will let you know the results immediately.
Checking whether your cervix is dilated well will prepare you for the final stages of labour.
You know your body better than anyone else, so you can do these tests at home without the risk of infections due to external equipment and so on.
Steps to Check Your Cervix for Dilation
Checking your cervix for dilation is important to be aware of the stages of labour. Before you go into the details of the process, it is important to be prepared to keep your cervix free from infections. Here are the basic preparations you need to do before checking your cervix for dilation:
Preparation to Check Your Cervix for Dilation
Here is how can you can prepare to check your cervix for dilation at home:
1. Clean Your Hands Thoroughly
Your hands should be washed thoroughly and disinfected to ensure that there are no germs that enter your uterus and cause infections when you check it for dilation. Use a good hand sanitiser on your hands. Ensure that your fingers and fingernails are well-maintained to avoid internal cuts and bruises and infections.
2. Take Advice From Medical Professionals
To make sure you and your baby are healthy, it is important that you talk to your doctor. As the ninth month of your pregnancy approaches, your doctor will look for signs of labour. He may do an exam to see if your cervix has dilated or not and whether the baby has turned head down or not. You should also ask your doctor if you can check your cervix for dilation at home. If he says yes, then you can proceed.
3. Work as a Team With Your Partner
Although your body is going through the rigours of pregnancy, you can involve your partner to help you through this. Having your partner by your side gives you the moral support that you need during labour.
4. Get Comfortable
Get into a comfortable position before you check your cervix for dilation. The most preferred position is to squat with both your legs as much as possible. If possible, you can even sit on the floor with your legs up front and lift one of your legs up on a sofa or an elevated surface.
Now that we have covered the basic preparations for checking your cervix for dilation, let us go through simple steps that you can follow to check the dilation of your cervix in your home.
Checking the Dilation of Your Cervix at Home
You can check the dilation of your cervix at home by performing the following steps:
1. Insert Your Index and Middle Finger in Your Vagina
Ensure that your fingers are clean and sterilised as much as possible using solutions containing over 60% alcohol, like hand sanitisers. After cleaning, find the opening of your vagina with your fingertips and push the two fingers into your vagina.
2. Push the Fingers Deep to Reach the Cervix
The cervix is located at the end of the birth canal and is the opening of the uterus. Hence, push your fingers in deep to reach the cervix. Make sure not to put pressure or poke to avoid bruises and the breaking of the amniotic sac. Be gentle and probe around with your fingers. A dilated cervix will let you feel the amniotic sac. It will feel like a balloon filled with water. In a cervix fully dilated up to 10 centimetres, you can even feel the baby’s head crowning.
3. Probe Further to Understand the Level of Dilation
If you are able to pass a finger through your cervix, it can be considered as a 1-centimetre dilation. Two fingers imply 2 centimetres dilation and so on.
4. Get Medical Help
A dilation of 3 centimetres or above is a sign of labour. In such a case, it is always advisable to go to a hospital.
Look for These Additional Signs of Cervix Dilation
You can also look for these additional signs that may indicate cervix dilation. However, these are on a case-to-case basis and may not hold true every time.
1. Pay Attention to the Sounds You are Making
At 1-4 centimetres of dilation, it is very easy to make conversation normally. At 4-5 centimetres, it will be nearly impossible for you to talk. At 5-7 centimetres, you will be making very loud noises as the pain increases. At 7-10 centimetres, you will be making louder noises as you reach the ultimate level of your pain and cervical dilation.
2. Scan Your Emotions
At 1-4 centimetres of dilation, you will be elated and laughing at different things. At 4-6 centimetres of dilation, you will be smiling and laughing at small things. At later stages between 6-10 centimetres, you will get irritated even at very small things.
3. Check for Smells of Dilation
Pre-natal scents have a characteristic deep smell. If you notice a stark change to the scent of the room in which the delivery is happening, it is a sign that your cervix has dilated to around 6 to 8 centimetres.
4. See If There is Blood and Mucus
If you see blood and mucus which is of a characteristic brown or pink colour from your vagina, it is a sign that you are about 6 to 8 centimetres dilated.
5. Feeling Nauseated
The feeling that you get that you have to vomit is a characteristic of a 5-centimetre dilation.
6. Curling of Toes
Curling your toes or trying to stand on your toes is a sign of a 6 to 8-centimetre dilation.
When Not to Check Your Cervix During Pregnancy
Checking cervix for dilation should be avoided at all costs in the following scenarios:
If a trained medical professional has advised you against it, you should stay away from checking your cervix.
If you have had pre-labour or dilation issues in the past, you should avoid checking your cervix.
If you have a cervical stitch to avoid miscarriages and pre-term births, you should not do external checks on your cervix.
If you have placenta previa, avoid checking your cervix.
Do not check your cervix if your water has already broken as you will risk introducing bacteria to your birth canal.
Pregnancy, labour, and finally having a baby in your arms are life-changing experiences that bring you and your partner immense happiness. These tips to check your cervix for dilation can help you be better prepared for labour and delivery.

Try This Korean Skincare Regime To Get Glass-like Skin
The Korean skincare regime has become a global sensation. Korean women are often called 'glass beauties' because of the glass-like transparency of their skin. Besides genetics, their skincare regime is a prominent contributory. Here are some beauty tips that you can follow too!
1. Oil-based Cleanser
Irrespective of your skin-type, you should clean your skin with milk or baby oil. This forms a base on your skin, so when you use a face wash in the next step, the harsh effects of using something soapy are reduced, and the skin is deeply cleansed.
2. Water-based Cleanser
Use a deep cleansing face wash in case your skin is oily, or a mild face wash in case of dry skin. This cleans any dirt and makeup from your face thoroughly.
3. Toning
After cleansing, always use a toner to close any open pores. Open pores lead to acne, pimples, uneven skin tone and other skin problems.
4. Under-eye Cream
An under-eye cream is a must because you should not use regular creams or packs under the eyes. The skin there is sensitive and needs extra care. It is essential for pregnant women or new mothers to use an under-eye cream because they are often seen struggling with sleep.
5. Serum
A serum goes under the skin and forms a layer so that a moisturiser or sunscreen work well. It brightens up your skin and is a prominent step of this Korean skin regime. So don't skip this step.
6. A moisturiser with SPF/Sunscreen
Moisturising and protecting your skin from harmful sun radiations is something you should do even if you are staying at home. So using a moisturiser with SPF is recommended. You can apply a tinted sunscreen before going out.
7. Night Cream with Facial Oil
Before going to bed, follow the first five steps mentioned above and then apply a proper night cream with or without facial oil to repair any damage done during the day.
Follow these steps daily and see the difference for yourself. Besides, use a scrub and a face pack twice a week and get good steam too. No other facial will work as well as this Korean skincare regime. Give it a try and see the difference in few days.

Diarrhoea Season Is on the Way - Beware and Take Care, Mothers!!
I'm a paediatrician. As I finished my OPD checkups today, I noticed that we have started getting more complaints about loose stools this month as compared to previous months.. So, thought I should write about it.. If you notice these symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.
Passing of loose stools/watery stools more than 3 times per day or a change in stools texture.
If you notice any blood in stools and if it is hard or watery.
If your child has diarrhoea, is lethargic and not able to drink/eat.
If your child has diarrhoea and is passing less urine.
If your child has diarrhoea and her eyes look sunken or skin feels cool.
Most diarrhoea cases are due to a virus. And with treatment, it takes about 4-5 days for diarrhoea to get cured. So, please don't change your doctor if the diarrhoea does not stop immediately or within a day or two. We should not give anti motility agents to stop diarrhoea immediately.Don't worry if your child has loose stools but is eating and drinking well, passing urine normally and playing. The main concern is that the child should not suffer from water and electrolyte imbalance because of diarrhoea as salts and water of the body are lost in loose stools.
What Can You Do at Home?
Look for the signs I have mentioned above, if present, consult your doctor immediately. If not, give ORS (Oral Re hydration Solution) which is available easily at medical stores. If a medical store is not available, you can also make ORS at home.
How to Make ORS at Home?
Add 1.5-2 teaspoon of sugar plus a pinch of salt to a glass of water. The only disadvantage is that it doesn't have potassium. Store-bought ORS in any case is better than homemade ORS.
What Else Can You Give?
Banana and coconut water are very good sources of potassium. You can also give daal, rice water, bread, roti, curd, and khichdi. If the child is breastfed, continue breastfeeding.
What Should Not Be Given?
Fruit juices, cola drinks, preserved beverages shouldn't be given.ORS should be prepared correctly. Incorrectly prepared ORS can lead to complications. Will discuss about ORS in subsequent blogs. Till then, take care mommies. ?

For coriander mixed sprout dosa:
1 cup coriander, finely chopped
4 tsp oil, For the seasoning
1 small onion, finely chopped
½ tsp cumin seeds
1 green chill, finely chopped
1 tbsp (tablespoon) coriander, finely chopped
Method
To Make Idli Dosa Batter
Step 1
Soak idli rice in water. Let the water completely immerse the rice. Allow it to soak for about 6 hours.
Step 2
Simultaneously, soak the urad dal and fenugreek in water in a similar fashion, so that the dal immerses completely in water. Let it also soak for about 6 hours.
Step 3
Grind the urad dal into a fine smooth batter. While grinding, use the water used for soaking to make it into a smooth and fluffy batter.
Step 4
Pour this batter into a large container(Large enough to allow the batter to ferment and increase in its volume)
Step 5
Grind the rice into a smooth paste, adding just the required amount of water to grind into a almost smooth batter. Do not add too much batter else it will become too watery. You can grind the rice in batches for better smoothness.
Step 6
Combine the urad and rice batter, add salt to taste and set aside for overnight or at least 12 hours until the batter ferments. Once fermented, the batter will rise in volume.
For Sprouting
Step 1
Sort the whole grams to remove stones.
Step 2
Wash and then soak in water for 6-8 hours or overnight.
Step 3
After soaking, wash the moong again and drain the Water.
Step 4
Then, hang the soaked moong in a moist cloth for 10-12 hours (depending on the climate).
Step 5
Allow the sprouts to come out of the muslin cloth. Sprinkle water frequently if the cloth becomes dry.
Step 6
If you see short shoots coming out, your sprouts are ready to use.
To make mix sprouts coriander dosa
Step 1
First grind sprouts along with idli-dosa batter, cumin seeds, garlic, ginger and green chilies, coriander along with a little water. Don't add too much water to prevent it from becoming runny.
Step 2
Pour it into a mixing bowl, add salt and mix.(Remember, your idli-dosa batter already has some salt added to it, add accordingly)
Step 3
Place a griddle / non-stick tawa on medium heat.
Step 4
When it is hot enough, pour a ladle of batter and swirl in a circular motion to spread it out like a dosa. Drizzle a little oil around the dosa.
Step 5
Spread some of the seasonings on the top. The wet surface will help it to stick. If required add a little oil over the onions.
Step 6
When the bottom of the dosa lifts off the pan easily, flip over to other side and cook for a minute.
Step 7
Turn it again, fold in half and turn off the heat.
Step 8
Serve hot with a dip or sauce or chutney of your liking.
Step 9
Repeat the process for making the other dosas.

Tip: In winters, the batter takes longer to ferment. Instead, you can place the batter in oven and switch on the light for a few hours. Once the oven is warm, turn off the light and let the batter ferment. In the absence of light, preheat the oven to warm, turn off oven, then keep the batter in the oven to ferment. Read more

Q. I am 23 weeks 1 day pregnant. I was feeling the movements actively until today. Baby movements were not that good or maybe I didn’t feel it that way today. Is it a cause of concern? Should I wait for a day or two or should I go and see my gynaecologist?
Please suggest!
